First time visiting Casa De Reyes. We stumbled on this plaza as we were following the live music. I honestly never seen or been to this plaza. It's so cute! So many small shops, from olive oil to chocolate. It was very busy when we visited as the Cinco de mayo festival was happening. We still only waited about 8 minutes for a table. Our waiter came soon and we quickly put our order in. The food came out just as quick! I had the surf and turf. The meat was good, nice and charred. The shrimp were wrapped in bacon and although good I decided to share them. The pico de gallo came with some nopales (cactus) which reminded me how good nopales are! The frijoles puercos were definitely tasty but not needed with this very flavor forward meal. Unfortunately the corn tortillas were a bit of a disappointment, mainly bc they were on the thicker/bigger side and got cold pretty quick. The pork with salsa verde dish was really good. The pork perfectly cooked. Note: definitely order the freshly made flour tortillas when dining here. The have a lot of fun margaritas to choose from. I feel like you can't go wrong. We chose to go to Miguel's after looking at their fabulous menu. We drove around looking for parking and fortunately, there is ample parking behind the restaurant that is available. As soon as we walked in an early afternoon on a Saturday we were seated immediately, which was another plus... so far so good. It took a while for our server to get to us and when she did, she was not very friendly, but we took it that she was busy so we just let it pass. We received our appetizer which was ceviche, and it was wonderful.. long before we even received our drinks. Unfortunately, they do not know how to make a true skinny margarita because this one basically had little or no alcohol and definitely had sweet-and-sour syrup inside the drink. I'm a former bartender, so I'm trying not to be critical with the drinks, but this one was probably the worst I've ever tasted for a very absorbent price of $18 for a small glass. Then we waited a very long time for our dinners but again we chalk that up because it was a busy Saturday. In the meantime, we were asked if we wanted more chips and we said yes, and I had to remind the server three times that we requested,on her behalf, more chips.. no apologies for her extreme forgetfulness and of course her attitude kept getting worse as the day progressed. I ordered the tamale special which sounded and looked wonderful on their website, but the tamales were dry and they had no cheese, just the meat filling and my husband's bacon wrapped shrimp were the smallest prawns I've ever seen and only five on a plate and it's obvious both our plates sat under the warmer for quite some time before being delivered because they were burnt around the edges with the sauce. Another telltale sign of food being prepared and sitting in the window until they could be delivered, and any time a food item was delivered to our table, It was never by our waitress, but always by an expediter. In the meantime, we had to flag down our waitress to get another glass of beer for my husband and any empty plates or glasses were never picked up the whole time we were there . Then when I went to pay with my card, which currently had over $5000 on credit, she had difficulty and told me that it was declined in a really nasty manner . It was not declined, but she must've had some difficulty getting the card to work and as a former restaurant manager, you NEVER tell the customer that it was declined, but you just politely say that "this card did not go through and is there any way of having another card to use"? All in all, we will never go back and we do not recommend wasting your time on this restaurant because the food is not what it leads you to believe and obviously the management has not trained their staff in restaurant and social skills. read more

Ive lived here 30 years and many things have changed or it doesn't have the spark and gatherings it used to have. I remember going to old town and it being more lively and festive. Now its quiet and not as robust as it was before covid. However, I see where all the people went. They are all at the casa de Reyes restaurant where the live band is! I really enjoyed myself here. Ive eaten here a long time ago and had the tortillas made by the women in that little area. Now, it is different. You order through the bar for the food and drinks. It was really nice bc I didn't have to sit down and eat. I went straight to the bar and ordered my long Island iced tea double shot. It was 20$. Im not used to paying for drinks so I was shocked at alcoholic beverage prices! Nonetheless, my drink was tasty and very enjoyable. The bartenders here are very nice and fast at making drinks! What an awful experience. I went with my mom and sister to get drinks and thankfully just an appetizer because we would've regretted getting an actual meal. The waiter was super rude. We unfortunately did not get his name. He was very condescending and annoyed whenever questions were asked about the menu. He literally would answer back with attitude to simple questions about a margarita. My sister had asked him about the type and amount of alcohol in it since her margarita tasted like a very sweet kool aid drink and he replied with: "Did you not read the menu? It said right there" I dislike to include race into reviews but in this case it was very obvious that he was more attentive to customers of white descent than us even if he himself is a person of color. The appetizer food was very bland. We got the platter that has taquitos, quesadillas, and nachos. Like other reviews say, there was no flavor at all. Taking a walk through Old Town one night I got a little swept up in the festivity of the Dia de Muertos celebration. The atmosphere is so much fun. Decorations everywhere, live music. And it's all set in the middle of the courtyard of Casa de Reyes. So my fiancé, and I decided to come back and actually eat at Casa de Reyes, which I have avoided for several years. It's definitely a tourist trap, great atmosphere. With that being said, you know that the food is going to be heavily Americanized. We went for the sampler platter, consisting of nachos, quesadilla, chicken, rolled tacos, and guacamole. We did add a little Carne Asada onto the tacos just to give us a bit more protein. The food came out and looked pretty good, but had almost no flavor. Except for grease. Even the little strips of Carne Asada were completely bland and chewy in such a sad way. I felt bad for the cow that gave its life to end up like that. At one point we were sitting next to the Fire Pit and someone else had ordered fajitas and they brought it out and the smell was so strange and unpleasant that I thought possibly my hair caught on fire. Thankfully, it had not. The chips were quite nice and the salsa that they brought out did actually have a nice flavor, although it was not even remotely spicy. I was initially thinking I would order something else to take to work the next day for lunch, but I was so disappointed that I decided not to. I do have to give props for the service, our server was excellent. She was friendly and attentive. So the long story short here is that I will not be ordering food at this place again, but I would also not be above going in for a cocktail and chips and salsa, just to enjoy the vibe. The margaritas and Palomas looked really good. I didn't get one because I was working the next day and didn't want to actually have any alcohol that night. We went for nonalcoholic coronas. After tax and tip, our bill for the appetizer and two nonalcoholic beers came to $55. Casa De Reyes is located in Old Town San Diego. They do have indoor seating, but the real draw for this restaurant is the outdoor courtyard. There are many tables with umbrellas and heat lamps for both day and night, an outdoor bar, and even a fire pit and water fountain. Next to the outdoor dining area, they have a stage with bench seating and a few tables where you can enjoy live music. Chips and salsa are complementary. The chips were fresh and the salsa was flavorful and on the mild side heat wise. I tried the La Riviera Maya specialty margarita, and it was average at best. Since we had a busy day ahead, I just had the medium size and it was pretty small. Their specialty margaritas are definitely expensive at $18.45 for the medium and $20.45 for the large. If you decide to try one, you might as well pay the extra $2 to get the large size. For my entrée, I had the Tampiquena Especial which is a carne asada steak and a cheese enchilada. When the plate first arrived, I thought it was a pretty small piece of meat but it was actually a lot thicker cut than your average carne asada steak. It was well seasoned, cooked as requested, and tasted very good. I really liked the grilled chili pepper it came with. The enchilada was very cheesy and good. This plate also comes with fresh made flour tortillas. They have a small tortilla kitchen out on the patio where you can watch them being made all day. My girlfriend had the bean and cheese tostada with mahi mahi. The fish was a little under seasoned, so she added some salt. The bean and cheese burrito was also enjoyed. Service was friendly and reasonably timely. I don't think that I would eat here on a regular basis, but it was fun to come and enjoy dining outside at this lively place. read more

When visiting Old Town San Diego Casa De Reyes has been a staple for my family when entertaining friends or family while visiting Old Town. The restaurant is all outdoor seating with plenty of seating and shade. Sitting in the center of the Reyes Shopping Square next to the stage with daily performances. We purchased their combination platters -- one taco and enchilada -- $25.00. There is NO lunch menu, and NO a la cart items. Asked if I could have one hard shell chicken taco. Rude waiter, said he wasn't suppose to bring me an a la cart item, but would do it, and brings me a small street taco,(soft shell) and charged me $15.00 for the one 2 bite street taco, when I asked for a regular size hard shell taco. Quality of food has gone down significantly but now will charge you an extra 4% on top of your bill for "operational fees". Not only in the restaurant but in the whole little plaza, even the churros shop is charging the 4% fee. Bacon wrapped shrimp was not fresh. Had been cooked way prior to order. Meat was salty. Crispy tacos not as crispy. Stadium beer prices, $15 for a tall can. Had to wipe off my chair due to food still on it from previous customers. Wet burrito sauce took away from overall flavor. When we don't finish food, this should tell you everything. No clean plate = food not good. I hate to say it but some true honest quality control and return to what is the food quality and taste used to be needs to be addressed. When it's full of people you may think food is wonderful and all is good. But in this case looks are deceiving. Pics depict what we left on our plates because we just couldn't continue, not because we were full. We just couldn't to force ourselves to finish the food due to taste and quality. Old Town can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing a restaurant, so we were lucky to stumble on Casa de Reyes (House of Kings). We started by sitting on the outdoor patio under a giant umbrella with a view of the beautiful gardens and a fire pit which was lit and much needed. We ordered some Michiladas with Modelo Especial and they were just what we needed. I ordered some yummy enchiladas and enjoyed the view and friendly service. The salsa was the best. Everyone in my party loved their meals. Unfortunately, no doggies were welcomed at this restaurante Mexicano, not even in the patio. So that was a downer. They text you when your table is ready, so you can roam around and enjoy the live music, if there is some nearby. Food: They provide complimentary chips and salsa to start. The salsa has a kick to it. I order a combination platter of a taco and tamale that came with rice and beans. The Carne asada taco was super greasy and was underwhelming. It wasn't loaded with meat and the pico on it was sad (just looked like diced tomatoes and a spec of onion). The Tamale was heavy on the Masa and it was covered in melted cheese (I've never seen that before). They were also out of beef tamales. The kids menu was super disappointing. The only meat item was chicken tenders. The meals were just really pathetic. We ordered the kids cheese quesadilla and ended up giving our son beans, rice, and meat from our plates. It didn't even come with guacamole, sour cream or salsa on the side, just tortilla and cheese. It was also supposed to come with milk, but we didn't get any. My husband got the nachos and said they were good, but again said the carne asada was greasy. They charge a 4% surcharge to every bill. Entrees are already a bit pricey due to the ambiance I imagine. Atmosphere is nice since it is outside, there was music a ways away at the stage (but could still hear), and festive decore. Service: Service was very slow. It took our server a while after we were seated to come over. People seated after us were greeted by their server before us. There were multiple instances where I was waiting for something or needed something and looking around for her. It took a while for us to get drinks, our check, etc. food came out decently quick. Ordered the beef carnitas, which come sizzling and with an assortment of sides including; beans, guacamole, sour cream, tortillas, pico, and some of the best rice I think I have ever had. It was so flavourful and well cooked, we ordered an extra side of it just to eat with our meal.
