OLD TOWN SCRAMBLED with Horchata Latte (Cold)
    David H.

Cocinas del Monte in Old Town San Diego is a hidden gem, especially if you're a foodie. The food is excellent, with very fancy, thoughtful presentation, yet the vibe is super chill and relaxed. It's the kind of place where you can enjoy high-quality dishes without feeling rushed or stuffy. They offer a great variety of Mexican-to-American breakfast and lunch options, so there's something for everyone. I ordered the Old Town Scrambled meal, which came with perfectly cooked eggs scrambled with shrimp and mixed veggies. Everything tasted fresh, balanced, and flavorful. After partying hard for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, I was craving something healthy--and this hit the spot. It honestly felt like eating a clean, wholesome meal you'd expect from somewhere like Whole Foods, but with way more flavor and personality. Highly recommend if you're looking for fresh, elevated comfort food in Old Town. They specialize in brunch and breakfast.

Cocinas Del Monte is the current tenant at a corner suite of a busy intersection in Old Town. The space has seen many Mexican restaurants pass through its doors which is unusual because the area gets a decent amount of foot traffic from visitors. They have a covered front and side patio for outdoor seating and an inside dining room which was where I ended up. A couple of large parties were seated, but the rest of the place was unoccupied. Two separate menu booklets were handed to me, one for beverages and one for food. I selected a Strawberry Lemonade for a drink that did have fresh fruit slices added and wasn't too sweet. I was in the mood for a breakfast item and chose a Denver Omelette from the list of five preset combinations. Ham, bell peppers, onions, and mixed cheese were the ingredients. A choice of toast (English muffin was my pick) or tortilla along with a side (hash browns was my pick) came with the order. The hash browns were grilled to a nice degree of crispiness. A couple of pats of butter were provided for the English muffin. The omelette was okay because it was a bit smaller in serving size for the price compared to some of the local breakfast joints I frequent. The service from the staff was acceptable. I gave a 3.5 star rating for my recent breakfast Cocinas Del Monte.

Had such a great brunch at Cocina del Monte today with my girlfriends! The food and drinks were delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Everything came out looking amazing and the portions were great too. Our server Diana made the experience even better. She was so kind, attentive, and welcoming the entire time. She checked in on us often, made sure we had everything we needed, and had such a positive attitude. You can tell she genuinely cares about giving good service. Definitely recommend this spot for brunch, good drinks, and a fun atmosphere. We'll definitely be back!

Located in old town, there are plenty of street parking around the spot. We sat on the patio for brunch. Our server was welcoming, though the overall service was noticeably slow. It took a while for our food to arrive, and even longer to get our check. I ordered the Del Rancho Eggs with green salsa. The dish was descent (the best thing was probably the rice), but didn't stand out compared to other authentic Mexican spots. The corn tortillas also didn't taste freshly made, which is a letdown. I'm not sure who was in charge of the playlist, I found it funny the restaurant was playing high school pop music the whole time we were there.

Lovely restaurant! We sat by the "River" which had the fire pit, great atmosphere. Also, our server Abdi was so sweet and helpful with his recommendations!

Came here for a late brunch and we had a pretty great time! We were sat immediately as they weren't that busy. The outdoor dining area was breathtaking with the fountain that they had in the middle. Our server was pretty quick in getting our order in but there was a bit of a wait for our food and drinks. I ordered the strawberry lemonade which was okay because it tasted a bit watered down. My friend ordered the tropical smoothie which he said was good but tasted mostly like bananas. For food I ordered the Eggs Your Way: over easy eggs, sourdough bread, hashbrows, and sausage. I really enjoyed my meal because the eggs was cooked just the way I like it and the hashbrowns were nice and crispy. $18 for this meal though seems a bit pricey to me. My friend ordered the Cinnamon Crunchy French Toast and he said it was good and satisfied his craving.

Love driving around old town San Diego , it was about 12pm and we were still desiring breakfast. If you want breakfast served all day this is the place to go. The servers are amazing and kind, they were really overwhelmed however and it did take a little longer than usual to get our food but all in all it was worth it. The flavors were delicious and you can definitely personalize your pancakes and waffles to your liking . The Mexican Hot Chocolate was decadent. I didn't like the fact that the inside seating did not have central air and in the dead of summer it was kind of gross. There was also weird pond in the middle of the restaurant but still found it odd, as I'm sure it may have a history attached to it somehow.

This place is absolutely phenomenal! Every single thing our table of 8 ordered (I tasted everything) came out great! Salmon wrap, and the kids burger was insane!! The Nutella pancakes so delicious!! Pancakes are very fluffy and tasty! Definitely recommend!! This place is a must try!

This place is in Old Town San Diego. Lovely, quaint restaurant. Our servers name was Sebastian. He was kind, attentive, served with a smile. He made sure to check on us, cleared the table soon after we were done. The food was amazing. I had French toast with cinnamon and sugar. Bomb. I would love to come back if ever in San Diego again.

The food was delicious and our waiter Abdi was very nice and attentive. The music fit the environment, my friend and I sat outside at the river table. Definitely a good stop for tasty breakfast!

Excellent brunch! We had our small dog with us, so we sat on the patio. The service was very good and consistent. The food was very tasty! We split the Caesar salad and they even brought out a small portion of bacon for our dog which was very nice! I ordered the chicken chilaquiles which were excellent and my husband ordered the steak and eggs. Very comfortable spot.

Divorciados chilaquiles - go for just the red!
    Anna E.

OMG - I can't believe we haven't been here before! It's really good! I had the Divorciados (chilaquiles with red/green sauce) with chorizo. My hubby had Chilakiles with just red sauce. The red sauce was more flavorful, so I'd probably go with that next time. The beans and rice were tender and the eggs were cooked perfectly. Tons of flavor and a good size portion. They also have shredded hashbrowns, so I'd probably swap in those for the rice next time. Service was friendly and fast. Really cute outdoor patio. I'm not sure how much space is inside, but if you have a large party it's probably best to make a reservation.

As someone who grew up in San Diego, I probably should have known better than to go to Old Town for food but alas there I was. The restaurant was empty, not surprising for a Tuesday afternoon, and I was seated quickly. Service was fine, nothing notable about but nothing to complain about either- it was straight forward. The Midnight Mocha Latte was not good, $7.50 for a poor-quality espresso latte with Hershey's syrup. I would probably skip any cafe drinks altogether because this is not a cafe. The food was much better, the Mexi Benedict with the hashbrowns were well seasoned and had some spice to it, the eggs were poached well. The bill at the end of my meal is what has really influenced my rating- $40.84 for a brunch for one person. Curse myself for getting two beverages, almost $8 for a bad tasting latte was NOT a good choice. And $20 for eggs Benedict with chorizo and a thin layer of hashbrowns sound a bit steep on second thought (is chorizo not a cheap meat?). Tack on the 7.75% sales tax, 15% tip and 3% credit charge fee (who even charges fees for using a credit card anymore?), it adds up. Unfortunately, this place is just another case of an overpriced, "just ok" restaurant in Old Town.

I initially ordered the something and picante (can't remember the full name) and found it to be way too sweet. Then switched to a basic Lalo with soda and lime to cleanse my palette. After tried their version of an espresso martini which was quite good but made with nitro brew and kahlua so a bit on the sweeter side. Located in Old Town San Diego, we had dinner at a restaurant within walking distance from Oculto. I parked for free on the street and made a reservation day of. It's a pretty small speakeasy so if you're going on a weekend, you're probably going to have to make a reservation in advance. Ambiance (4.5/5): Oculto has the seven deadly sins theme going which is pretty cool. I've been to a similar speakeasy in St. Pete, Florida. Once you arrive at the mezcal bar that houses Oculto, check in with the host, and he will bring you to a "confessional." There, you must confess one of the seven deadly sins before the door to the speakeasy is opened for you. Naturally, I went with "lust." Once you get inside, it's a charming speakeasy. Service (2.5/5): This is one of the areas that leaves a little to be desired. There was only one bartender working when I was there. Since speakeasies have elevated cocktails, service was quite slow. They definitely needed two bartenders there to speed up the process. They also have a two-drink minimum which I was annoyed about on principle. I often have multiple drinks at a bar, but I never feel like I'm forced to do it. Food (N/A): I'm not sure if they have food, I don't believe they do. Regardless, I was on a liquid diet. Drinks (4/5): Pretty interesting menu of craft cocktails. When I'm at a speakeasy, I look for unique drinks that have an interesting combination of ingredients and flavor profiles. In addition to a nice list, they also have a dealer's choice cocktail where you can tell the bartender what you're into and they will craft a custom cocktail for you based on your taste. Another cool thing about Oculto is that it's located next to the cemetery in Old Town. That adds to the spooky theme.
