Depends on what you're getting here, but I'd stick with the sandwiches and pastries. Breakfast/coffee items are alright, pancakes were okay.

Mama G's Special Sauce - Lomo Saltado

Mama G's Special Sauce

Mama G's one of those places that makes you feel at home the moment you walk in…read more The food was amazing, full of flavor, great portions, and you can tell it's made with care. It tastes like comforting homemade food but with a special touch that makes it stand out. The service was excellent. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. They really make you feel taken care of. The ambiance is warm and cozy, perfect for enjoying a relaxed meal with family or friends. It has that inviting vibe that makes you want to stay a little longer. Definitely a spot worth coming back to.

Mama G's: Where Flavor Runs in the Family (and so does the Business)…read more 4/25/2025 - If you've ever wondered what love tastes like in Peruvian form, wonder no more--Mama G's has the answer, and it's smothered in creamy green sauce and served with a side of family charm. This little gem is family-owned and operated, which means your meal comes with a side of abuelita-level care and possibly a secret recipe passed down from someone who could definitely beat you in a chili pepper eating contest. First off, let's talk drinks. The Chicha morada--a purple corn punch that sounds like a Harry Potter potion but tastes like the nectar of Incan gods--is a must. I was feeling a bit more adventurous so I opted for the dragon fruit margarita. Warning: it is dangerously smooth. It goes down easy, so maybe don't go down two in a row... unless you've got an Uber on speed dial. Now, the food. The Causa with chicken is like a potato cake's glamorous Peruvian cousin--it's cool, creamy, zesty, and hits harder than your uncle's karaoke at a family BBQ. The Tallerines Verdes with flat steak? Fire. Literal fire. Pesto's sultry Latin lover. The steak's seared just right, and the sauce is so good you'll want to lick the plate (and then pretend you didn't, but you did). Sure, the decor is simple, but who needs flashy lights when the food is flexing this hard? At Mama G's, the walls don't need to talk--the dishes do all the shouting. Come for the Chicha, stay for the steak, and leave with a heart (and belly) full of Peruvian joy.

We got our order in a timely manner and the servers were quite attentive and thoughtful throughout the whole time we sat down. My husband ordered the Filet Mignon. I got the Spaghetti and Meatballs since my friend ordered the same, and I found out later the place was known for their meatballs and homemade pasta. The food didn't wow me as much as I would like, and some of the meatballs in my friend's plate had little shards of bone unfortunately. She didn't seem to mind, and the spaghetti itself was tasty and cooked perfectly. My husband's food was seasoned at a decadent level with the bites he gave me. It made up for that pocket of an unfortunate moment. Honestly the highlight for me was the company and the atmosphere: since we came here for lunch, a lot of light was shining through where we were sitting due to the huge windows and I enjoyed it very much! We got dessert (that mostly my husband ate) and the sugar high sealed the experience for me. It was great time sitting with friends. While I wouldn't come back solely for the food, I'd return for the company, upscale ambiance, and good vibes

My 20-Year Secret: The Ultimate Old-School Pizza Joint (That…read moreDoesn't Need My Help Staying Busy) Look, I've been gatekeeping this place for over two decades. Never wrote a single review, never hyped it online, barely even told friends. Why? Because it already feels like home, and some things you just want to keep for yourself. But here I am, finally cracking the vault--mostly because it doesn't need my word-of-mouth anyway. The line is always there, snaking out the door on busy nights. If you can't spot where it starts, just ask the people standing around. They'll point you right in. Trust me, it's worth it. This spot still feels exactly like 1995, and that's the highest praise I can give. The guys behind the counter are warm, human, no corporate script in sight. You walk in and immediately exhale. No rush, no nonsense--just good pizza and people who treat you like a regular even if it's your first time. The prices? Pure time-machine magic. Two giant slices for $7.50 (no drink). Yeah, it's probably crept up a couple bucks over the years, but it still feels like a steal in this city. Back in the day I'd rotate between pepperoni or the porko special. These days? I'm a creature of habit: straight cheese or cheese + mushroom. They toss your slices back in the oven, and about five minutes later they call your name. Hot, bubbly, perfect. That's the real draw for me. In a world that moves too fast and feels too cold, this place makes me feel human again. I grab a corner table, shake on some garlic, parmesan, and chili flakes from the actual shakers (none of that sad packet life if you're eating in), and just... daydream. Nineties nostalgia hits different here. Life made more sense back then, and somehow this pizza brings a little of it back. Practical stuff, because I care: * Cash only, my friends. Hit the ATM on site if you need to (it has a fee, so come prepared). * Street parking only. Next door to the dry cleaners. For the love of God, do not block the driveway. Your car will get towed. Nobody cares if you ordered ahead or think you'll only be two minutes. Park across the street or around the block if the spots are full. You've been warned. * No soda fountain--just cans or bottled water. They've got small side salads and calzones if you're feeling fancy, but me? You'll probably find me in the corner with my cheese-mushroom combo, lost in the sauce (literally and figuratively). * Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan accordingly. If you're in the mood for pizza that tastes like simpler times, this is it. It's not trendy. It's not Instagram-bait. It's just... home. And after 20+ years of keeping it to myself, I'm finally okay sharing. See you in line.

Best beef sandwich on the west coast!! Chicago dog was perfect!! Pizza did not disappoint! Extremely satisfied with the quality of the food! A total throw back walking in the door. I'm not from Chicago, but it reminded me of the little pizzeria I went to when I was a kid in the80's. Everything on the walls screams the good old days! All the employees were friendly and genuinely happy how excited we were to be there! I was raving about the pizza puffs and the owner threw 2 in our to go bag. top three restaurant experiences! The vibe is really chill, it was decently busy and everything flowed smoothly. If you're a foodie like me and my wife then do yourself a favor and get to Lefty's asap! I am disabled. I have autism and complex-ptsd. I was dehumanized and abused excessively by a server…read morehere. She withheld basic behaviors including hello, thank you and goodbye for ten solid months. What she did is called 'withholding' and it is a very toxic emotional abuse tactic. I was told she wanted to punish all men for what her ex did to her in Colorado. This server was mad at all men the same way Nazis hate all jews and the KKK hates all Afro-Americans. Multiple complaints to the owners did absolutely nothing. I kept coming back believing that one day I would be treated like a human being. I am from the Chicago suburbs, and this is the only game in town that served Chicago dogs and Italian beef. I loved the place more than any restaurant I have ever been in. The server doubled down and instead of recognizing the abuse she was inflicting became more aggressive defining every word I said, every tonal quality, every facial expression and element of body language based on a sick narrative in her head. I complained several times and the owner completely dismissed my concerns. At one point the owner, Lauren Hodson told me that her server was reacting to what I was doing and saying and when I asked her what specifically I was doing to be abused she replied, "you know what you are doing and saying". I stopped going there on July 7th, 2019. I am a suicide survivor as a result of this situation. This is documented. I have not been in restaurants, with one yearly exception, in seven years. I have not been in Golden Hill, North Park or Hillcrest in seven years. I am afraid to go there. I still flashbacks and anxiety from the abuse I suffered. Ten months of relentlessly dehumanizing abuse destroyed who I am. It has now been seven years since my suicide attempt. I am proud to say that I am in a stable place in my life, albeit I can no longer enjoy frequenting a restaurant. Do not patronize. Human life means nothing to the owners, Brandon and Lauren Hodson. They could have easily explained minimum standards to their employee and asked me to give her another chance. This would have given me closure. Instead, they did nothing for six months then fired the server. Lack of closure leads to solidification: I cannot express my feelings except to say I still get depressed and will never be able to be a regular in a restaurant again

Those spaces are limited though, and you'll see signs that start stating you have to pay for the time you're parked. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Mainly outdoor patio, with a few bar seats and only 2 tables inside the main kitchen area. It was extremely busy when we came at 6pm on a Thursday - probably due to everyone lingering after their Happy Hour Orders. I could tell they were getting food/drinks out as quickly as possible, but definitely couldn't handle the rush. I saw one party decide to leave without getting their full order.
