This place has close to 5,000 reviews, wow! Pizza is legit. Another Yelper and a caving friend in the same week told me to go to Bronx Pizza, so after a Sunday event close by, I stopped in here. It was about 8pm and there was a line snaking out the place. Good sign. Parking is very annoying here. I ended up parking in a lot right next door that allowed for 10 min parking. Line moved fast and yes, this place does remind me of an old school grimy pizza joint in NYC. I got the two slice and soda special for $9. Asked for a slice of mushroom and slice of sausage. The kid helping me heated it up and it was ready in less than 5. One weird thing about this place is that there is no parmesan cheese available on the tables. I didnt bother to ask for anything and no one seemed to be asking for it. Its not really pizza without a little parmesan cheese right? I had the mushroom slice and its good. Thin crust and slightly chewy. Hit the spot. I'll have the other slice for lunch the next day. Overall, I enjoyed coming here. BRONX PIZZA @ HILLCREST Parking is street parking only, but I definitely recommend turning down the first left once your navigation brings you to Bronx Pizza. It's kind of tucked away in the corner, and I was luckily able to find a spot pretty easily. Parking is free after 4 PM, and during school days I believe it's a two-hour limit before then. I had never heard of this place before, but my friend has been raving about it for the longest time. It's actually one of the highest-rated pizza spots on Yelp and Google and is known for its authentic New York-style pizza with a super thin, crispy crust. If you don't want to order a whole pie (which ranges from around $30-40), you can just grab a slice! Cheese slices are only $3, while specialty slices with toppings are around $4.50. They also have some great lunch specials, including two slices and a drink for just $9 or one slice, a salad, and a drink for $9. My boyfriend and I both went with the two slices and a drink combo. They have a good variety of drinks including soda, juice, and water. I just grabbed a water. For my pizza, I ordered the jalapeño pepperoni slice because I love spicy food and had never tried jalapeños on pizza before. This absolutely blew my mind. It was so flavorful, perfectly crispy, and had the perfect amount of spice. Every bite was amazing. One thing to keep in mind is that they're cash only, so be sure to bring cash with you. If you forget, they do have an ATM inside. The staff were incredibly friendly and heated each slice fresh before serving it. The restaurant has plenty of seating with booths inside, additional tables, and outdoor seating as well. They also have a restroom, and near the condiment station you'll find red pepper flakes, garlic powder, oregano, and other seasonings to customize your slice. Overall, this place completely lived up to the hype. It has such an authentic New York pizza shop feel, the pizza was incredible, and the prices are hard to beat. Bronx Pizza is a small yet inviting pizza shop located in North Park, very good spot. Pros: the pizza here is New York style, so it's very thin, but also very tasty. They sell by the slice or you get a full pie that you can eat there or take it to go. They have a lot different options for toppings, and the most common that you will see by slice would be pepperoni, cheese, meat, lovers, spinach and ricotta, and a bunch of others. I ordered the tomato and basil slice, the Whitestone, spinach, and the meat lovers, all were very good and tasty. My girlfriend ordered the jalapeño and pepperoni, which was also very tasty. There was red pepper, oregano, and I believe garlic powder at the tables that you could sit inside which was very spacious once he actually got inside and passed the counter to order. I got the two slice plus drink deal which is nine dollars which I believe is the best price if you're not getting a full pie. They have a bathroom in there. That's all gender and they have a lot of seating inside that is very New York inspired. Cons: note that this is cash only, there are no ways to pay with credit card debit card or anything else. There is ATM inside in the case you don't have cash on you which is nice to have. There's also very limited parking around the area and you'd have to do street parking or walk there. There's no isolated parking lot specifically for this place. Verdict: is a solid pizza spot and I would come back here again and again for any kind of New York style pizza. As an east coaster who relocated to SD almost ten years ago, my goal has consistently been to find pizza, bagels, & egg sandwiches like they make at home or as close to it as possible. To this day, I'm still at a loss regarding the bagels & egg sandwiches as nothing has really come close (honorable mention: Pop-Up Bagels), but the legit closest I've come to having NY Style pizza in SD is absolutely Bronx Pizza! Bronx has been around since 1997 & they're coming up on their 30th Anniversary! That's quite a milestone. During the time I've lived in SD, I've come here a handful of times & it is always consistently simple, fresh, & tasty. You can buy individual slices or whole pies, but just make sure you bring cash. Services is fast & friendly, no-nonsense, but efficient. These guys know what they are doing. Bronx has two main dining areas & a couple of tables in the front. You bus your own tables, and tables are first come first serve. Street parking only. The decor has not been changed, probably since they opened, but it's giving "pizza joint that has been around for awhile & focuses on pizza and not trends or frivolous things" - that's good in my book. Porko ($4) - This slice transported me to New York City. It had the classic crispy thin crust that you could fold and enjoy. I'd recommend this slice if you want a variety of meat as it has pepperoni, meatball, and sausage. Pepperoni ($4) - I thoroughly enjoyed this slice, too. Overall a very solid slice for the price. We got a pepperoni slice, a Whitestone slice, and a pesto slice. Out of the three, I liked the pepperoni the most, it had the best balance of flavor and texture. The pepperonis were solid, and sauce the cheese ratio were good. However, I felt the sauce was a little lacking in flavor and the bottom of the very floppy and didn't hold up very well even though I ate it within 5 mins of getting it. The Whitestone pizza is a solid choice, but it is very ricotta heavy so it might not be a great choice for people who don't love it. I enjoyed the texture a lot on this one though, nice and crispy bottom and good crust flavor. The pesto was probably my least favorite. A little overly salty taste. Pesto wasn't super flavorful. I probably wouldn't get that one again. Definitely worth grabbing a slice or two from Bronx pizza if you're in the area or want some very reasonably priced slices. Haven't been here for *years,* glad to see it's still standing strong. It felt a little loud and chaotic though, guess that's the vibe. I didn't look too closely at the menu since there was a line forming behind me. Although the pesto pizza looked amazing, I told the guy 1 Combo Pizza Slice. The sausage was good, I love when there's fennel in it. The crust was also good. I think they mastered reheating the pizza because it was hot, but not burnt. I've had enough pizza to judge that Bronx is one of the top contenders in SD in terms of NY pizza. They got all the elements down: foldable slices, the cheese that goes harmoniously with the marinara is then slathered on top and ever so shimmers with glory, and the crust is ever so crispy...airy...and amazing. When I picked up my slices for the first time, I inhaled all that cheesy goodness and couldn't wait to sit down at the table to scarf it all down. I tried a slice of the Margherita and the Pesto pizza, both were freshly made, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I was born and raised in the Bronx, and Bronx pizza was all I knew until I went to college. So, I think I can appropriately weigh in on what good pizza from my borough is. Pizza will forever be a hot topic with New Yorkers - everyone will have their own opinion on what makes a good best NY slice. You can even go so far as to include the greater tristate area as NJ and CT regularly weigh in with their offerings. But we're specifically talking about Bronx pizza today; I may be biased but I think it's some of the best pizza there is. Even though I now live in Westchester, I will usually only have pizza when I'm in the Bronx because nothing up here comes close to it. Why am I mentioning all of this? Because when I saw a place in San Diego called Bronx Pizza, my first reaction was "oh really??" - and even though I was in California, my curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to check it out. That being said, we made plans to grab lunch here after a day of exploring Balboa Park. Upon entry, BP gives off NY pizzeria aesthetic. You're immediately greeted by the production area which has pies on display. Beyond that, though, is a really spacious seating area which I didn't expect - so it's not hard to find a table if you're looking to dine in. The walls are filled with Italian-American and Bronx/NYC memorabilia which I thought was a nice touch. We noticed they had a special which came with two slices and a drink. That sounded perfect so I got a plain cheese and a pepperoni. The slices were heated and then we were called once they were ready. So, how was it? They came close, I think as close as they could. It was definitely a thin NY style slice, but the crust lacked that slight chewiness; that's partly due to the water - something that just can't be replicated. I also thought the sauce was a little bland, but not a dealbreaker for me. Outside of that, they were good slices. Service was fast and friendly. Overall, while BP does not totally replicate a Bronx slice, they do a great job making NY style pizza; this is likely a place I would order from regularly if I lived in SD. It's also nice to see all the love this place gets from locals and the positive representation it gives to the borough. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for great pizza in San Diego. read more
