Very impersonal and not the kind of service I usually enjoy when going out to eat. My question is if I'm not getting much service, hardly see the waiter, have food and drinks dropped off by a variety of people, do all the ordering myself which makes food and drinks come out at different times for others in my party then why am I paying and tipping like I would at a restaurant where I get all those things? My husband and I tried Sonny's months ago. Just getting around to posting the review. We were early enough to not have to wait for a table and were sat next to the bar. The table for two was tight once the food arrived but we managed. The drink menu is very creative and we had some difficulty deciding what to order. I saw the pizza special included ground beef. I haven't seen ground beef offered since I was on the east coast. Ordered that for nostalgic reasons. The pizza crust was thin like we've had in Connecticut. Sauce was great. The beef had peppers in it which wasn't my favorite. Service was excellent. Décor reminds me of garage hangouts in the 80s. Not mad about it. Parking is a problem though. As for the food, I got a side of potatoes which were an absolute 10/10. I also tried the Rigatoni alla Vodka. The portions are on the smaller side and while the potatoes stood out, the pasta wasn't my favorite. The noodles were cooked well and it had a good amount of sauce, but I think I was expecting a bit more flavor. I'd definitely try something different next time since my expectations were pretty high. The food here is really great and when you're inside the restaurant, it actually puts you in the mindset of NY pizza joint. The service here was good and the staff is kind! I will say we had a minor issue when it came to our food which delayed one of our dishes, but the staff remade it with no issues after that. The pasta was great 10/10 and pizza was just as pleasing. We also tried the Zucchini Fritti and Classic NY Style Cheese Pizza also 10/10. Such a great Margherita Pizza and also I get the Pineapple Express with vegan meat. If you like that little kick with sweetness, I would recommend extra jalapeños. As much as it is sin for some people, I recommend asking for ranch cuz it's also bomb and just adds that goodness to the pizza! Perfect for their crust. The pesto was definitely unique. Sonny's is a vibey nostalgic spot for pizza. The food is spot on -- pizza is delicious, can't go wrong with the famous original but Blitzkrieg Bop is also good with the pepperoni cups. Do not sleep on the housemade pastas. Spaghetti with marinara is simple but absolutely tasty. Rigatoni alla vodka was good but under-seasoned. (Skip the focaccia though, it's just their baked pizza dough.) Plus a fun drink menu! Service left a lot to be desired. After the hostess seats you -- booths and tables inside, additional seating outside (there's also a bar) -- you're left on your own. If you can flag down a waitstaff, you can order with them. Otherwise you have to order through their QR code. The first time we went, the lack of waitstaff wasn't a problem. But the second time we went, it was definitely an issue. Our food came out very slowly and in no particular order. They also missed an item in our order, so we had to flag someone down twice (it took over 40 minutes for the dish to come out). We got a pizza and four cocktails drinks came out within five minutes and the pizza maybe came out within 15 minutes. They have a very large authentic pizza oven in the middle of the restaurant . If you're looking for a meal and drinks with a large bill and non-existent service, head to Sonny's. We arrived on a Saturday at 6, were seated upstairs, and told to scan a code to place our order. For $80, we shared a pizza, salad, and two drinks. The Caesar was heavily dressed and lacked crunch after being weighed down by the dressing. The pizza was good, crust had a nice chew, but was Parmesan heavy. The drinks were strong and my drink was the same cost as the pizza. The most disappointing aspect is you're on your own once you're seated. We grabbed our own box, grabbed extra napkins, and luckily had a carafe of water or else would probably have to get that too. My friends and I went to this place last night and were thoroughly happy with the food! To be honest, the service could have used a little help but in their defense, they were incredibly busy. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed! We were able to be seated right away which was a plus but parking is absolutely terrible! It's our first and last time that's Sonny's. The staff was initially friendly, but after my well-deserved complaints, they became silent and cold. We placed an order for marinated olives and BBQ chicken pizza. The waiter confirmed that the olives would arrive first. Unfortunately, the staff was unable to get the olives out in a timely manner. After 15-20 minutes, I asked the waiter to check on them; he said he would and disappeared for 10 minutes. After that, another waiter carried the olives to our table. I remarked how late they were getting to us, and like a true unprofessional, he scowled at me and walked away. Two minutes later the pizza came out by the other waiter, which was totally unacceptable. I said, "Why is everything coming out late?" To which he again just walked away. When our waiter came back, I told him my complaints, and he said, "He'd take note of my complaints...WTF." As a token gesture, an empty one, he eventually took the olives off our bill. This lack of incompetence and unprofessionalism is only seen in the most backwater establishments. Rating the food: 1. The olives were bland and not properly marinated. I've had olives in a can. 2. The pizza was lukewarm, and the flavor was just OK. I was going to say something to the waiter, but from his past mistakes, I knew he wouldn't do anything useful. Worse was that for a pizza that's supposed to have chicken on it, there was BARELY ANY CHICKEN. I paid for an underwhelming crust with sauce! Have been wanting to try this place since it opened. The place is super cute with nice outdoor seating so we brought our pup. You go into the main entrance and then pick your own table. You use the QR code to order and then they bring your food and drinks to you. Super efficient. The staff still regularly checks on you to make sure you have everything you need. They were all fantastic and friendly. We ordered the caprese and a pizza. I had a glass of wine and my husband had a cocktail. The drinks were good. Wow, talk about bad service! Considering what a patient person I am I was shook at the lack of attentiveness all around at this place. I saw a lot of waiters and waitresses around but all seemed to be lost. Ordered food that never came even after reminding a waiter of our order. Left hungry. Not a lot of meat sauce and the pasta was overcooked. Even chili flakes didn't help much. Great outdoor patio that is dog friendly. A number of workers came out to say hello to Cako. She got treats from the twins who worked there, and come to find out, they are actually triplets, but their brother had the day off. The space has a nice chill vibe and the staff was really friendly. I understand the checks appear to be electronic, but we didn't see the total when I asked to pay. After looking at my text receipt, they forgot to add the wine. Now the kid in me was like, "hit the road and go!" But the adult was like, "I want to come back and don't want to be that guy!" We had a short wait and were then ushered upstairs to the additional dining area which is much quieter than the first floor. The service was just non existent. Earlier this month, the owners of Madison opened an '80s style, East Coast influenced pizzeria around the corner from the overarching 'University Heights' street sign on Park Blvd. The previous tenant of the building was an auto parts business so much refurbishing was needed including the installation of an imported, custom pizza oven. The layout featured a covered outdoor back patio that had the most available seating with picnic tables. You could also sit at the bar or some booths in the main dining room. Menu sheets were available at the unstaffed "hostess" stand near the doorway. You then used the QR code available at each table to place an order. While it saved on labor, I didn't like how this made it difficult to ask questions about items on the menu. I will mention more about this later. "Pizza and Fine Food" was stated on top of the food menu. This consisted of appetizers, salads, charcuterie boards, pasta, a burger, and a few entrees in addition to the pizza pies. From the list of appetizers, I selected the Pepp Rolls which was made up of mozzarella, pepperoni, green onion, parmesan, and a cup of marinara for dipping. The problem was that the order came as four small rolls for a whopping $18! At minimum, there should have been six to eight rolls because one can get an entire small pizza for that price. Had I known the quantity, I likely would not have ordered this item, but this goes back to a lack of a dedicated server. The rolls had a slight burn to the crust to give some crispiness to them. For an entree, my choice was the Tagliatelle Bolognese. A beef and pork ragu made up the sauce with a touch of cream added. A generous grating of parmesan topped the pasta dish which was very savory. The $21 price was high for the serving size of the noodles. A cheery staff member did come by my table to see how I was doing after the food had arrived. I just wasn't sold on the absence of upfront assistance which would have influenced my dining experience at Sonny's Pizza. read more

This resataurant has lot of character with sort of NYC Italian vibes.. It's also super cozy & family friendly with plenty outdoor seating. In the future they plan to also setup live music etc. in their large outdoor patio. Sonny's has imported a stylish pizza oven from Italy that can make 10 pizzas at the same time (and super quick too). Even their fittings like speakers etc. are designer custom made. We booked through OpenTable, which made the scheduling easy, but the restaurant was surprisingly empty with maybe a handful of other people inside. There's indoor seating and outdoor seating with both covered and uncovered sections, outdoor heaters, and a cute bar that splits the two areas. We were seated right away. You can order from a server or through the QR code, but the service was rough from the start. We placed our first order with the server. The pizzas come with six slices and a very thin crust so one person can easily polish one off. Our first pizza showed up in about 10 minutes. We decided to order another, but it took a while to even get the server's attention. He never checked in on us. There were no extra napkins at the table, and none of the tables had chili pepper. They dropped off one container of water when we were seated, but no one ever returned to refill it or check whether my friend needed more soda. When we put in the second order, I asked for my friend's pizza to be made to go with extra pineapple. It came out without the extra topping and not boxed. Easy fix, but the real issue was the wait. It took double the time, which left us rushing to eat before heading to an event. When it was time to pay, we had to ask the hostess because the server was nowhere around. It looked like the whole place was running with one server, a hostess, a bartender, and a couple of chefs. They also add an automatic 4% service fee, and it's honestly unclear what you're tipping on when most of the interaction is just food being dropped off. Food ordered: *Blitzkrieg Bop: Amazing. Thin crust, great flavor, and loaded with pepperoni. *Pesto for the Pizza: 4/10. The pesto was extremely rich with way too much sauce, and the chicken was pretty sparse. They also have pasta, so everything could be shared easily as a group. We were satisfied with our meal. I was content with the calamari and we enjoyed our pizza. Just wish we had more of it! Absolutely amazing pizza, a little pricy, but the taste and vibe and service covers it immensely.

I went on valentines night with some friends, the ambiance was not what I was expecting, when looking online the dark and moody vibes gave me the impression ppl might be a little dressed up but it was way more casual then expected to be. We ubered so for parking I don't know too much, I saw some cars parked on the street but I don't remember if there were meters or signs with parking rules. We got sat down and when sat we were told we could either wait for our server or scan the QR code and order. We decided to wait because we wanted separate checks and there was no clear instructions on the QR, they didn't ask if it was our first time or if we may need help understanding the ordering with the QR, so like mentioned we decided to wait. We waited at least 15/20 mins until finally stopping someone and asking if we could get our server, even asking we still waited probably an extra 5/10 mins for one to come over. Our server finally came over, took our initial order of our first round of cocktails and an order for a pizza. She left and never came back, she wasn't even the one who brought us our drinks (which is fine assuming the staff is probably helping each other). We probably waited another 10/15 mins at this point until she finally came back to see how things were and we finally put in an order with her. The pizza took a while but it was understandable as it looked like they were backed up with orders because we were sat right in front of where the pizza making was happening. Our pastas we ordered came out before our pizza but we were given no utensils or no napkins so then we had to try and stop another staff member, which took at least a few mins as well. Finally the pizza came after receiving our napkins and utensils. The pizza itself overall was good, but I don't know if it's because we went on Valentine's Day but expect to wait a while. The pastas we all ordered were okay, not much flavor, we all added the seasonings on the table to make it better. We got alla vodka and a simple spaghetti and meatballs. The first round of cocktails we got were straight up juice and super sweet and a bit sour, not very good. Our second round which wasn't captured we got a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, which was okay. Then for our dessert we got espresso martinis (there were no real desserts on the menu fyi for dessert lovers) and the espresso martinis were not very good, tasted like watered down coffee and way too much vodka. When we asked for the check the lady never came back and our uber home was arriving so we had to go ask the front desk and she let us know we can pay via QR code or leave our card on the table, at first we left our card but no one came so we just paid with the QR code and split the ticket at home ourselves. I would say try the pizza, maybe order takeout, but overall not a place you're missing out on if you ever come, def better spots in San Diego. read more
