Great spot for a pre bar meal in university heights. Recommend to sit on the patio for the atmosphere! Food is solid nothing incredible, but we enjoyed it. Service is GREAT! Fast and very attentive.
Another IG suggestion, Sonny's pizza was a complete miss! They take reservations, and if you want a table inside and don't have one available, you're waiting for a table for a long while. There is plenty of seating outside and readily available. We arrived just around sunset so I knew it was going to get chilly really fast and I hate sitting outside being cold and trying to eat. I asked if there was a bar area where we could sit. They had plenty of open spots, and we had no issues immediately grabbing a couple of seats there. The drinks were not bad, I ordered the Fiorella - a fruity cocktail and the hubs - the rhinestone cowboy (this was interesting and had sprinkles or pop rocks on the rim) Overall the food was just ok. We liked the calamari, it was crisp, not chewy, a very generous portion. I love a super thin crisp crust pizza, so we decided to try Sonny's Supreme. Yes, the crust was thin, but it could not hold the weight of sauce or toppings. It was actually so soft and heavy, you can only hold onto the crust while the rest of the pizza fell pointing to the table. There was no way you could lift a slice to eat. It instantly fell apart being pulled apart and I had to eat it with a fork, scooping all the toppings to eat. The pizza couldn't stand on its own, so we probably won't be back. 2026: 39
I came to this place two months ago with my boyfriend, and we absolutely loved it. We ordered the Little Gem Caesar Salad, Sicilian Anchovies, and Pesto for the People. Both the food and the service were amazing. I even made a TikTok video about the place that got over 6K likes and hundreds of saves. We loved it so much that we decided to come back yesterday and order the same dishes again. We noticed that the menu had changed a little, but we still ordered the same dishes along with the Rigatoni alla Vodka. Unfortunately, this visit was a completely different experience. The Little Gem Caesar Salad had a lot of romaine lettuce in it, despite being advertised as Little Gem. The pizza was burnt, as you can see in the photo, and the rigatoni was overcooked, with a sauce that had almost no flavor. After three disappointing dishes, our server, Jackson, came to check on us. My boyfriend honestly explained the issues with the pizza and pasta, and I showed him the bottom of the pizza. His response was, "Oh, actually, this is how it's supposed to look." When I replied, "Oh, really?" his response was, "Yeah, do you want to get the check and get out of here?" Excuse me? We were paying customers simply giving honest feedback about our food. We weren't being rude, raising our voices, or making unreasonable demands. Neither of us is the type of person who complains about everything, which is why we didn't even bring up the issues with the salad or the pizza until he checked on us. Instead of acknowledging our concerns or handling the situation professionally, our server chose to be dismissive and disrespectful. After we finished our drinks, Jackson was nowhere to be found, so we asked Jasmine, the hostess, for the check. She was very nice, professional, and knew how to treat customers and handle a situation properly. She was the only positive part of this visit. It's honestly disappointing because we genuinely loved this place the first time we came. A restaurant can have an off day, and mistakes in the kitchen can happen. However, being disrespectful to customers who are simply expressing their concerns is unacceptable. If you don't want to be spoken to rudely or treated like you're a problem for pointing out issues with your food, I would not recommend this place. Good food can bring customers in, but good service is what makes them want to come back. Unfortunately, after this disappointing experience with both the food and the service, we won't be returning.
Sonny's Pizza has such a charming vintage atmosphere and even better food to back up the good vibes. They have a large patio space that looks perfect for a sunny day or cozy booths inside. We had a great server, Kezi, who was very welcoming and checked on us repeatedly. For food my friend and I split one custom pizza and their charcuterie board which was the star of the show! The truffle dip and apricot habanero jam were my favorite and they paired so well with everything else on the board. The focaccia was fluffy and warm too. We had plenty to share for two people and even had leftovers to take home. And of course we had to finish with a slice of tiramisu. It was genuinely some of the best tiramisu I've had in San Diego. The slice was huge and it was super flavorful and moist. You could tell it had time to sit and absorb all of the flavors unlike the recent restaurant trend of table side tiramisu (what is the point?). I would love to come back with a big group to try a bunch more menu options and explore their fun drinks! 10/10 I will be recommending to everyone I know.
The four of us came here for my stepdaughter's 29th birthday right at opening and sat on the patio. Great start to the night! What We Ordered: Chicken Bake Rolls: A fun play on Costco's chicken bake, but served in roll form. The dough was prepped well and packed with flavor--you could taste every element, from the chicken, bacon, and mozzarella to the chili Caesar sauce inside. It comes with four rolls, so with four of us, it worked out perfectly. White Riot Pizza: If you're vegetarian, I highly recommend this one. The crust was crunchy with sesame seeds baked right into it, and the topping combo of spinach, ricotta, mozzarella, and garlic was simple and perfect. (Fair warning: the garlic is legit--you might have garlic breath for two days, but it's totally worth it!) Rigatoni alla Vodka: Hands down our favorite pasta of the night! The rigatoni was cooked absolutely spot-on, tossed in a rich vodka sauce, and topped with parmesan and parsley. Total hit at the table. Tagliatelle Alfredo: Really delicious, well-balanced alfredo sauce. The noodles were just a touch softer than our personal preference--but still a super solid, tasty dish overall! Chicken Parm: That first cut into the chicken parm gave us the ultimate cheese pull--melted mozzarella was literally dripping everywhere! The cutlet itself was breaded to perfection (not too thick, not too thin) with awesome crunch, flavor, and sauce. It comes with a side of spaghetti--the pasta was a bit more well-done than al dente, but the sauce was solid and overall it was totally fine. Service & Vibe: Overall, service was great. On a quick side note, our table had a dirty plate when we sat down, but it was no big deal--the staff swapped it out right away without any fuss. Overall, a really good meal, generous portions, and a great birthday experience. We'd definitely come back!
Happy accident!! We happened to be in the area and Sonny's Pizza was right there. Another restaurant in our places to try list. We were sat right away. Service was great. BIG family vibes. What we ordered: * Little Gem Caesar * Zucchini Fritti *;Sonny's Supreme All our food was tasty. We enjoyed the extra spice in their marinara dipping sauce (zucchini fritti). Their pizza was AMAZING. Super thin, airy & crispy crust. The cheese pull though..... Ooey gooey goodness!!
Loved this place! It's a sit down restaurant, but there are nice inside tables and outside tables. We sat outside because the weather was nicer, there were some flies but they had those little fans on the table. The back area is nice with picnic tables and families. We visited on a Saturday night and it filled up! We ordered the chicken bake rolls which were so great, the marinara sauce it came with was incredible! We also ordered a build your own topping pizza with half my favorite toppings and half my boyfriends. Finally we got the rigatoni allá vodka which was incredible! The servers were very kind and attentive, you can also order using your phone which is nice! Will definitely be back to try the fettuccine and get everything else we got again!
It's a pretty ok restaurant. I would say it's trembling the earth since it's the new pizza spot not because it's the best pizza spot. Came on Saturday night. I highly recommend that you make a reservation on OpenTable. We called them and told them we would be 15 minutes late and they were like cool, no problem! The ladies in line in front of us arrived at the host stand and were quoted a 20 mnute wait. We were seated immediately after. The star here is service. We were the only party at the entire resaturant with kids under 7 years old. Our server is a school teacher during the work week so she was super kind and humble. Our appetizers were fantastic. The scampi, the caesar salad, 9/10 for the price. Son of course loved the pasta, he dumped parmesan cheese all over it. The pizza here is very underwhelming. The crust is thin, ingredients fall off as you pick up a slice. That's not pro, that's not mid, that's low. It doesn't compare to Pizzeria Luigi, Bronx, etc. I am not sure if it's woodfried or not. I did go watch the oven. It rotates in a circle, it's not created pizza by pizza. Here it's about the enviornment. Nice benches, cool music, nice lighting, not too densely populated.
Pretty mid experience here. Walked in and the girl in front stared at us then walked past us out the door. The second person I let know we had a reservation but didn't check me in to it for open table. Sat us down and just left so we assumed it was order by QR code only. Would have loved to order with the waitress if we knew. The outdoor patio was nice and not too loud but the bench seating along the wall didn't have enough cushion for my partners seat. When someone got up we finally were able to move it. Food wise we got calamari which had no flavor. No salt at the table and minimal checking to get some. Pizza was ok I like the crust but had no flavor too. Also got the vodka rigatoni this was the best item but not mind blowing. I'd go again to try a different pizza and maybe the gem salad.
Pleasantly surprised with how spacious and how many tables were on the patio! World Cup was on the monitor when we came in. Didn't expect to see a tv on the patio. After the sun went down, candles lit up the tables and the music was on. The hanging lights with the huge murals on the wall gave such a great relaxing chill vibe. Pizzas were bigger than people had described in the reviews. I really enjoyed the generous portion of calamari and the Pepperoni pizza homage to the Ramones. Walked inside to check things out. It had a very East Coast mom and pop vibe from the pictures on the walls to the wooden booths. At night, this could be a cozy date night for two. Made a reservation and quickly we sat down. Water was brought out quickly. Service was slow and lacking by our server. Took a while to get our orders. Server never asked how things were. I noticed how the bussers hustled to turn the tables around and quickly clean tables off. They had Parmesan, red pepper and oregano on the tables! Nice East Coast touch. Never got a chance to see if they had garlic for the pizza. Overall it was a good low key dinner.
I was very interested in trying this spot out. At first sight, I loved the look and the feel of the restaurant. I noticed they had a full bar and some fun drinks. However, we went for the food during this visit. Now, I don't want to say that the food was bad because the pizza wasn't so bad but I've had much better. The sauce was on the tomatoey side and more of a watery consistency. That made the pizza bread soggy. The chicken parm was wayyy too cheesy and the chicken cutlet itself was thin. The spaghetti had the same sauce as the pizza so that was disappointing. Nonetheless, the flavor was tolerable. I think I would return for the drinks at the bar and maybe a small appetizer just to try with drinks. The service was adequate.
Best ranch ever created Perhaps 4 stars on a good day just because we got seated and then I think forgotten about a bit like they were so slow when it came to taking our order like 20min and then took about 10min to give us water and had to call somebody over to take our order. But really kind during service! + pizza crust not as crispy as expected, it's a very floppy pizza. The flavor however, was there.. Very Tasty! Spaghetti & Meatballs. Wowowow I was so impressed with Sonny's! The charcuterie board was the stand out favorite. It had the perfect combination of mild cheeses, spicy salamis, olives, pepperoncinis, a truffle cheese spread, and habanero jam. We started putting the jam on our pizza and it was incredible. Highly recommend adding the Calabrian chili to your pizza. Gives it a nice kick without being overpowering. Loved the pizza sauce - it had actual tomato chunks and tasted pure tomato savory instead of sweet. You have to end your meal with the tiramisu. Best tiramisu I've had in years. It actually had such a nice coffee/amaretto flavor that others are usually lacking. Service was excellent and the spot was super nostalgic - really fun!

Sonny's Pizza is like being transported to the early 90s to a Pizza Hut but with 1000% better Pizza and great craft cocktails. Definitely make a reservation so you can sit in the booths that evoke Pizza Hut or Chicago style pizzeria vibes with drinks that come in those red plastic drinking glasses, the table lights straight out of a Pizza Hut and even the red candles that would find at Pizza Hut. The pizzas here are top notch and our salad and pizza came out very quickly. read more
Man oh man I want to be nice to Sonny's but I have ordered take out 4 times and been in restaurant a half dozen times. The service is spotty (being generous) the food is good not great and each time I order take out they forget to give the driver the full order. Each time I had to call the restaurant and ask them to remake the food they forgot since it was sitting out for a long time. Just do better. Be better and create an environment where people feel welcome etc. Right now you are missing f the boat. Bottom line: treat customers better. Oh my god while I was writing this I opened my pizza box and it was the wrong pizza! Wow. Called the shop no help at all. This place will close in 30 months if they don't change. Do not go here until they fix their problems which are many. read more

we were seated inside and noticed that there was no fans and ventilation that did make the inside room hotter so i'd recommend getting seated outside! we were served warm water which was confusing but our server who was amazing and attentive brought us ice when was asked for some. the drinks were tasty and strong. the food was good, the chicken bake rolls were tasty and cheesy! my only complaint was that the inside was still not fully warmed as there was still unmelted cheese at the center, nevertheless they will make amazing leftovers for tomorrow. we also got the monthly special the god father which was very tasty. you can tell they use a wood fired oven here! read more

My husband and I tried Sonny's months ago. Just getting around to posting the review. We were early enough to not have to wait for a table and were sat next to the bar. The table for two was tight once the food arrived but we managed. The drink menu is very creative and we had some difficulty deciding what to order. I saw the pizza special included ground beef. I haven't seen ground beef offered since I was on the east coast. Ordered that for nostalgic reasons. The pizza crust was thin like we've had in Connecticut. Sauce was great. The beef had peppers in it which wasn't my favorite. Service was excellent. Décor reminds me of garage hangouts in the 80s. Not mad about it. Parking is a problem though. We tried to go a few additional times but left after not lucking out with a spot in a three block radius. You can make reservations on weekdays for parties of 2-30. read more
Happy accident, a place on our places to try list was just around the corner from the Elite Yelp event. We came in and was blown away by the trifecta of deliciousness and amazing service and atmosphere. Family friendly vibe. We ordered fried zucchini chips and a Caesar salad with Sonny's Supreme Pizza for our main course.The food was really good especially the spicy marinara sauce with the fried Zucchini chips. Came here for a birthday celebration and for the amount of people we had, they were very accommodating. You don't interact with servers as much since everything is order and pay at the table through a QR code that you scan. The vibe here is super cute and aesthetic. I love every detail of the decor! As for the food, I got a side of potatoes which were an absolute 10/10. I also tried the Rigatoni alla Vodka. The portions are on the smaller side and while the potatoes stood out, the pasta wasn't my favorite. The noodles were cooked well and it had a good amount of sauce, but I think I was expecting a bit more flavor. I'd definitely try something different next time since my expectations were pretty high. I was originally looking for spaghetti and meatballs, but didn't see it on the main menu. I later noticed it was on the kids menu, which I don't usually check so I missed it. Parking is a hit or miss, but that's expected for the area. I spent about 15 minutes looking for parking. read more
I'm already looking forward to my next visit!! Sonny's transports you straight to your Italian grandmother's house. The cozy atmosphere and beautiful aesthetic give this place so much charm. The food was excellent, and every dish was shareable. We sat in the cutest booth, admiring all the Italian photos around us. This spot also has a great outdoor patio and the largest pizza oven I've ever seen! I can't finish this review without mentioning the service. Our server Kezi was incredibly friendly and attentive. 10/10 spot- I'd definitely recommend for date night! read more
Sonny's was great. I got the pizza rolls and they tasted delicious and had great portions. I also had some good drinks. All of the waiting staff was very attentive and friendly. We sat outside and it was a nice day, there were people with their dogs there, and it got a little tense between them. read more

Sonny's Pizza is in the heart of University Heights and fits right into the scene over here. It's a very fun restaurant complete with a patio and a really cool vibe. It is really awesome they can do accommodations like half and half, a lot of places are fussy about that. We had great service and the focaccia was delicious! The pizza fell just a bit short of expectations - the cheese was clumpy and not cooked enough. It was just okay - maybe just a one off. I would probably return to try it out again! read more

I'm so happy to have found a pizzeria with such an authentic old-school vibe right here in San Diego! This was my first time here, and I absolutely loved the atmosphere. Easily a top 3 pizza spot in San Diego for me, and it's definitely going to be one of my new go-to places. Facundo was an amazing host--he checked on us multiple times throughout our visit and made us feel genuinely welcomed and taken care of. Great pizza, great atmosphere, and even better hospitality. Our first time here we were dazzled! Second time.... It was "ok". Not quite sure what the trick is but maybe come here around 5 pm when it's not busy. I took a photo of the same pizza (Pineapple Express) we ordered from our first visit and when we ordered it again, my boyfriend and I were confused. It was drenched in sauce, barely any jalapeños, soggy in the middle. But we were hungry and thought maybe we were just being picky. After comparing the two photos of the same pizza, I know we weren't being picky. The pizza was just not made right. We still like this place a lot tho. But next time we will be sending the pizza back to be cooked as it should be. But the Caesar salad is bomb and so are their speciality cocktails. read more

I tried Sonny's on two separate occasions and both experiences were superb! The first time I ate here was New Year's Eve for my husband's birthday. The atmosphere was lively, the staff service was friendly and food service was even quicker for being a holiday surprisingly. We ordered the Pineapple Express Pizza and Pistachio Pesto Pasta. The pasta was great 10/10 and pizza was just as pleasing. We also tried the Zucchini Fritti and Classic NY Style Cheese Pizza also 10/10. What's also great about this place is you can utilize the QR code at the table to place your orders if you need to. So you don't always need to flag down staff to place your order. I would absolutely come here again and recommend it to others too! read more

This place is literally the best pizza in San Diego. Coming from the east coast, it's been so hard to find pizza that even compares. My partner and I come here at least once per week, and we always order it for delivery as well. It's such a cute atmosphere and we love sitting under the lights outside on the patio. The service is always very good, and the drinks are exceptional. We like the pepperoni and the cheese pizzas, but they have a lot of other fun flavors. And all of the apps are insane... We like the pepperoni rolls and the focaccia! I would definitely host a reception in the outdoor patio area, it's just so cute and homey feeling at the same time. Love this place! Been here twice now and had to go back to try the pasta. The pasta was good for sure but this is definitely all about the pizza. Such a great Margherita Pizza and also I get the Pineapple Express with vegan meat. If you like that little kick with sweetness, I would recommend extra jalapeños. As much as it is sin for some people, I recommend asking for ranch cuz it's also bomb and just adds that goodness to the pizza! Perfect for their crust. The pesto was definitely unique. Longer, wider noodles in the pesto sauce. With how much pasta there was, I don't think there were enough tomatoes. Although the pastas were good, I'd recommend the pizza. Very easy to order from the little table number QR code if needed. Waiters come in and check on you through your visit. Overall such a vibe. Very cute date night spot that's casual but feels classy. The food here is really great and when you're inside the restaurant, it actually puts you in the mindset of NY pizza joint. The service here was good and the staff is kind! I will say we had a minor issue when it came to our food which delayed one of our dishes, but the staff remade it with no issues after that. Parking isn't too bad since it's street parking but plan more time if you are coming here during a weekend! read more
Sonny's is a vibey nostalgic spot for pizza. The food is spot on -- pizza is delicious, can't go wrong with the famous original but Blitzkrieg Bop is also good with the pepperoni cups. Do not sleep on the housemade pastas. Spaghetti with marinara is simple but absolutely tasty. Rigatoni alla vodka was good but under-seasoned. (Skip the focaccia though, it's just their baked pizza dough.) Plus a fun drink menu! Service left a lot to be desired. After the hostess seats you -- booths and tables inside, additional seating outside (there's also a bar) -- you're left on your own. If you can flag down a waitstaff, you can order with them. Otherwise you have to order through their QR code. The first time we went, the lack of waitstaff wasn't a problem. But the second time we went, it was definitely an issue. Our food came out very slowly and in no particular order. They also missed an item in our order, so we had to flag someone down twice (it took over 40 minutes for the dish to come out). Sonny's is still a great spot to check out, but adjust your expectations accordingly with their service (or lack thereof). read more

Among the worst dinning experiences. Flys, everywhere, no fans, you sit within elbows reach of the diners next to you. Employees texting an using cell phones between running food and drinks (unsanitary) employees were trying to get guests to attend a specific event for JuJitsu and seemed like the server cared more about his outside obligations then his guests and tables. I am sober from alcohol and your staff attempted to drop off alcoholic beverages to my table twice, after this you tried to drop off appetizers to our table as well. The tables are numbered so you clearly have internal operations failing. We never got checked on, no refills of soda or water, flys touched all of our food and plates. Realllllly sad this was the first and last experience I'll have here. read more
