There are not many restaurants within walking distance on Hotel Circle in San Diego's Old Town area, so we found ourselves at Crust Kitchen. The decor is 1960s and feels old and tired. Although a sign says 'wait to be seated,' we waited quite a while before we were waved up to a counter where we ordered. Our food was brought to the table, but no drink refills were offered and no check was brought to us, so we finally went to the counter to pay. In short, service was minimal. There were a few vegetarian options and we got the vegetarian burger with fries which were about $16 each. The burgers were black bean and tasted fine but not special. The fries were fine. So if you are at one of the nearby hotels, this place is reasonably priced and ok, but not worth going out of your way to find. read more

Walked in to a wonderful Saturday brunch experience with the most wonderful server ever - shout out to Vera and her absolutely gracious and welcoming personality! They were perfectly creamy, the fries themselves were good, and there was a generous smattering of smoky, crispy bacon. I got the pastrami and it was EASILY two meals, even if we hadn't gotten an appetizer. The meat was well seasoned and not fatty, and it was good straight out of my hotel fridge the next morning. They have mixed reviews but we gave it a shot. There was no wait but there are people constantly arriving. Took a while before we were acknowledged since she's the only one but gave us a huge smile when she greeted us. Vera seated us right away and was pleasant when she took our orders. A few friends and I swung by here for lunch one day. One of my friends brought her lunch from home and the staff were super nice about allowing her to eat. They made sure to let her know she didn't have to hide it and it was okay that she ate it in the open. This showed me that they are super chill and understanding. I got the 2 eggs with sausage, a side of fruit, and a side of avocados. The sides were only $1.89 each, I believe! Unfortunately, they forgot to give me the avocados. The eggs were tasty, fluffy, and not runny... perfect! The potatoes with peppers that came with my eggs were delicious. My side of fruit was fresh and tasty, but it would have been better with more variety than cantaloupe and honeydew. I got my wife a breakfast burrito with bacon. It came with tater tots! I showed my server my Yelp check in for a free soda but was told they do not accept any coupons or discounts. I'm not sure what happened but towards the end of our meal when I went to the restroom to wash my hands, my husband told me they "felt bad" and gave us a free soda. Started out for breakfast and with so many choices in San Diego all you have to do is hit the road and look around. After dropping my wife off at the airport, I found this gem in Mission Valley and glad I did. The biscuits were a bit of a disappointment, at least for me. Granted, it was 9:30 am and the batch of biscuits were probably made first thing in the morning; they were advertised as buttermilk, garlic, and cheddar, I didn't see any evidence of cheddar. In addition, they were dry and dense, not fluffy or light, and the amount of sausage gravy was not adequate to clean up the biscuits. The country potatoes on the side were good, creamy and flavorful. The coffee was also good. Would like to try the savory/sweet side of the menu next time, perhaps the fried chicken and waffles. All in all, good spot.
