Started out for breakfast and with so many choices in San Diego all you have to do is hit the road and look around. After dropping my wife off at the airport, I found this gem in Mission Valley and glad I did. First impressions were good, clean, open, lots of natural light, modern decor, menu simple but a decent variety. I'm am a sucker for biscuits and gravy so opted for those with an egg on the side. The biscuits were a bit of a disappointment, at least for me. Granted, it was 9:30 am and the batch of biscuits were probably made first thing in the morning; they were advertised as buttermilk, garlic, and cheddar, I didn't see any evidence of cheddar. In addition, they were dry and dense, not fluffy or light, and the amount of sausage gravy was not adequate to clean up the biscuits. The country potatoes on the side were good, creamy and flavorful. The coffee was also good. Would like to try the savory/sweet side of the menu next time, perhaps the fried chicken and waffles. All in all, good spot. I worked till the wee hours of the morning and then had to get up early to run errands in the Fashion Valley area. Still groggy, I passed Crust Kitchen, which I have always wanted to try. Walking in, Vera, the waitress greeted me with a hearty hello helping me to wake up a little. She had a big smile and looked me in the eyes. She continued to be consistent with all the guests that entered. She even hugged a few of them. You can tell she really likes being at Crust and she makes sure everyone is well taken care of. The open air, roomy layout of Crust is great. The only thing is the kitchen was playing a different genre of music from the main dining area and they were competing. The dining room looked updated and modern but the parking was shared with the liquor store next door and the surrounding hotels so parking wasn't ideal. Greeted right away and sat down at a clean table with menus. The server (Alex) was on top of it and checked in periodically. He even gave me a soda to go (after using the check in for the free soda in the first place). Shout out to Alex for great service. I ordered the goat cheese and pesto benedict... even after reading the reviews about it having too much sauce (which I agree with), still had to give it a try since it's not something you see every day. Def good but needed some additional seasoning, I had to add salt, even with the normally salty goat cheese, still needed some more. Our first day in San Diego for my cousins wedding we had to eat lunch. This Crust Kitchen place (we thought was pizza) was right next to our hotel. The ambience looked pleasant on the photos and then we read the menu and it looked like there was more to offer. When I called back to adjust my order, he picked up calling out my first name. That seems like a small thing, but it was nice that he was paying attention. I ordered the skirt steak and eggs, substituting a pancake for the toast, a meat lovers omelette with a waffle substitute, an order of french toast, and a coffee with cream and brown sugar. When I came in to pick up my order, it was already ready and he greeted me by name again. I looked down and saw some brown sugar packets. I was going to grab some, but when I asked if the sugar and cream were in the bag he said "yes." Unfortunately, when I got back to the room, it was white sugar, so my mom was disappointed. The inside of the restaurant was clean and decorated nicely. We didn't eat in, but it was appealing and some place that I wound we only got half a waffle. I thought we'd get a whole one, so that was sad. Also, I think my mom got tri-tip instead of skirt steak. It was still tasty, so that's not really a big deal. It just wasn't what we were expecting. Stayed on hotel circle so decided to try Crust for breakfast. The service was a bit slow but the food was good. I was especially surprised by the sausage. The flavor was good and tasted like real sausage, not that breakfast fare we've all become accustomed to. All the carbs were great. We dined here twice on our recent trip to San Diego as it was in walking distance to our hotel, also, because it's delicious. We tried it for the first time on last year's trip and it was memorable so we knew we had to return. Probably one of the best waffles I can recall ever having. Reminded me of cinnamon crumb cake. Excellent French toast too. On our last visit, I tried the goat cheese and pesto Benedict. A little heavy on the sauces but excellent flavor pairing nonetheless. Portions are large so my kids were able to split a plate each morning. Which helps since the meals are nearly $20. Heads up, they charge automatic 18% gratuity on parties of 5 or more. The Alfredo sauce is thin, sliding off the pizza slices, and just is not good. The crust takes up half of the pizza and is hard. It's so messy and just not even good pizza.
