We stayed at Courtyard Marriot for a quick weekend in SD and needed a quick breakfast. Everywhere I called had a long wait so just decided to go to a place that's near. They have mixed reviews but we gave it a shot. There was no wait but there are people constantly arriving. Took a while before we were acknowledged since she's the only one but gave us a huge smile when she greeted us. Vera seated us right away and was pleasant when she took our orders. I tried the corned beef eggs benedict (dunno why I had it over med but lesson learned) it was good amd not shredded like I expected but I liked it better sliced. Hubby got the chicken and waffles. The waffles are not the usual too crunchy/hard to chew but soft and reminds me of a waffle dog consistency. A few friends and I swung by here for lunch one day. One of my friends brought her lunch from home and the staff were super nice about allowing her to eat. They made sure to let her know she didn't have to hide it and it was okay that she ate it in the open. This showed me that they are super chill and understanding. The ambiance was chill, wasn't busy at all. We went around 12:30p on a week day. I ordered a Paris Burger. It was DELICIOUS. I brought my leftovers home it still tasted good being warmed up in the oven at home. My friend ordered the Tri Tip Philly. She said she really enjoyed it. My friend ordered coffee and said that was good too. The menu had so much variety. They had breakfast foods in the afternoon which I love. The service was great, which always makes a difference. Listen, I know they probably want you to upgrade your side to fries or tots, but they make the best house made kettle chips I've ever had in my life. I want a Costco sized bag to take home. The ambiance is very clean and retro, which I enjoyed. Service was quick and friendly. We started with the mac n cheese fries, and that was a solid choice. They were perfectly creamy, the fries themselves were good, and there was a generous smattering of smoky, crispy bacon. I got the pastrami and it was EASILY two meals, even if we hadn't gotten an appetizer. The meat was well seasoned and not fatty, and it was good straight out of my hotel fridge the next morning. First off, the hours are not accurate on Yelp! I spoke to the family owner, and they open at 9 am temporarily. Normally, it is 7am. The restaurant is doing meals for veterans in the mornings for a short time period. Upon entering this really nice family owned restaurant, I was immediately greeted by one of the family owners. I was getting my food to go, and he was very patient while I decided. Their inside dining is very clean and quaint. Music is done perfectly! I hate restaurants that blare their music as if it is a nightclub. This music was a nice touch and loud enough for mild background ambiance. I got the 2 eggs with sausage, a side of fruit, and a side of avocados. The sides were only $1.89 each, I believe! Unfortunately, they forgot to give me the avocados. The eggs were tasty, fluffy, and not runny... perfect! The potatoes with peppers that came with my eggs were delicious. My side of fruit was fresh and tasty, but it would have been better with more variety than cantaloupe and honeydew. I got my wife a breakfast burrito with bacon. It came with tater tots! The burrito was huge. You can easily split it. She loved the burrito and didn't make it through half! Overall, the service was great other than my missing avocados. The restaurant is decorated very modern. It's very clean and spacious inside. Seems they specialized in brunch but they also offer a wide variety of dinner entrees options. We ordered the buttermilk fried chicken, chicken Alfredo pasta, bbq chicken pizza and buffalo chicken pizza on gluten free crust ($2 extra). The food was average, way too much bbq sauce on the bbq chicken pizza. I think it's because they don't put on many toppings and tried to disguise that by loading on a ton of sauce. I showed my server my Yelp check in for a free soda but was told they do not accept any coupons or discounts. I'm not sure what happened but towards the end of our meal when I went to the restroom to wash my hands, my husband told me they "felt bad" and gave us a free soda. After dropping my wife off at the airport, I found this gem in Mission Valley and glad I did. Granted, it was 9:30 am and the batch of biscuits were probably made first thing in the morning; they were advertised as buttermilk, garlic, and cheddar, I didn't see any evidence of cheddar. In addition, they were dry and dense, not fluffy or light, and the amount of sausage gravy was not adequate to clean up the biscuits. The country potatoes on the side were good, creamy and flavorful. The coffee was also good. Would like to try the savory/sweet side of the menu next time, perhaps the fried chicken and waffles. All in all, good spot. The dining room looked updated and modern but the parking was shared with the liquor store next door and the surrounding hotels so parking wasn't ideal. Greeted right away and sat down at a clean table with menus. The server (Alex) was on top of it and checked in periodically. He even gave me a soda to go (after using the check in for the free soda in the first place). Shout out to Alex for great service. I ordered the goat cheese and pesto benedict... even after reading the reviews about it having too much sauce (which I agree with), still had to give it a try since it's not something you see every day. Def good but needed some additional seasoning, I had to add salt, even with the normally salty goat cheese, still needed some more. The Baja salad was really good as well, I loved all of the components and the dressing was prefect. I worked till the wee hours of the morning and then had to get up early to run errands in the Fashion Valley area. Still groggy, I passed Crust Kitchen, which I have always wanted to try. Walking in, Vera, the waitress greeted me with a hearty hello helping me to wake up a little. She had a big smile and looked me in the eyes. She continued to be consistent with all the guests that entered. She even hugged a few of them. You can tell she really likes being at Crust and she makes sure everyone is well taken care of. The open air, roomy layout of Crust is great. The only thing is the kitchen was playing a different genre of music from the main dining area and they were competing. The salsa, jalapeños, lots of cheese, and don't even get me started on the flavor of the fresh coffee... It was to die for! I've had lots of coffees in my lifetime but their house black coffee is hands down the best! From piping hot flavors, to even when it was room temperature. It never became sour and I could actually taste the after notes in the coffee while drinking it. Vera was nice enough to give us a cup to go. Without even asking. That's amazing service! When I called back to adjust my order, he picked up calling out my first name. That seems like a small thing, but it was nice that he was paying attention. I ordered the skirt steak and eggs, substituting a pancake for the toast, a meat lovers omelette with a waffle substitute, an order of french toast, and a coffee with cream and brown sugar. When I came in to pick up my order, it was already ready and he greeted me by name again. I looked down and saw some brown sugar packets. I was going to grab some, but when I asked if the sugar and cream were in the bag he said "yes." Unfortunately, when I got back to the room, it was white sugar, so my mom was disappointed. The inside of the restaurant was clean and decorated nicely. We didn't eat in, but it was appealing and some place that I wound we only got half a waffle.
