I love me some smashburgers, so when I spotted this spot while out with the family at Liberty Station I had to try it. The menu caught my attention right away because the item names were really unique and fun. We ordered the Spicy Smash, the Mixer Burger with garlic parm, and the cheesy fries. The burgers were definitely the highlight. The patties had that nice crispy edge and both burgers were full of flavor. The Spicy Smash had a good kick and the garlic parm on the Mixer Burger was really tasty. The cheesy fries were good, but the burgers were the real star. Prices were also very reasonable for the quality. I would definitely come back when I am craving a good smashburger. read more

We stopped into The Mixer last night and absolutely loved it. The space is so cute with great vibes, stylish decor, and a fun, relaxed atmosphere that immediately makes you want to stay awhile. The service really stood out. Our server Ryan was outstanding and incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. He truly made the experience even better and you can tell he genuinely cares about great service. The drinks deserve a shoutout because they are both delicious and adorable. This is also one of the only spots in Liberty Station that serves a full bar, which already sets it apart from many of the restaurants in the area. The pickle shots were surprisingly smooth and so fun. Definitely a must try. As for the food, the smash burger was excellent. It was juicy, flavorful, and honestly better than most of the burgers around Liberty Station. It really stands out compared to other nearby spots, which can be hit or miss. Overall, The Mixer checks all the boxes with great food, great drinks, excellent service, and a really charming atmosphere. We would absolutely recommend this restaurant, especially for their burgers and cocktails. We will definitely be back. Especially for their weekend brunch! read more

I'm really confused at the 3.8 rating for this place. I came for happy hour because.... This economy? It's the first time I've been here since it was Slaters 50/50 way back when. It was Monday at HH so things were slow but the service was great. Enjoyed the Butter Burger and the Flavor Spheres aka fried cheese balls - very delicious! So that you don't think that I'm a plant My only gripe was they had an all country playlist at the time, and I did let them know and they probably would've adjusted it if I mentioned it earlier. It's rough out there for restaurants so definitely support local when you can! read more

The ownership and staff are still the same, however the former Slater's 50/50 in Liberty Station has now been rebranded to The Mixer (inspired by the Catalina Wine Mixer). Much of the existing signage remained, and only a couple of small banners near the entrance indicated the presence of The Mixer. The place continues to be a bar and grill where people will come to watch various sporting events on the flat screen TVs. The biggest change to the menu was the removal of the beef and bacon patties in the signature burgers which was how the 50/50 part of the previous business name was derived. Smash burgers were now the featured items of which there were four varieties that each cost $11.50. The rest of the menu categories were typical... shareables, burgers, salads, sandwiches, chicken, fries, and desserts. After taking a spot at the bar and consulting with the bartender (owner?), I picked the Butter Burger and a side of french fries which was sold a la carte. There may have been a staffing issue that day because it took almost half an hour for my food to be ready which was long for a burger and fries. The place was maybe 1/3 filled with customers so the volume of orders shouldn't have been a factor. Two smashed patties were grilled with onions, topped with American cheese, and coated with European butter and garlic sauce. This was all served on a potato bun. The fries were seasoned, but they were pricey at $6.25 for the basket that included a cup of ranch dressing for dipping. The other sides like onion rings, sweet potato fries, and tater tots were even more expensive at $8.50 each. I'm not sure why there was a difference for tater tots as many spots charge the same as fries. The burger was soft and gooey from the cheese and butter. I don't think I could have consumed one much larger than the version they had here. The fries were nothing special except for the seasoning. For the food quality, price and service, it was a three star dining experience at The Mixer. read more

Craving burgers while here in Liberty Station, so I drove by to Slater 50/50, but I was surprised to see it's now The Mixer. I was already there, so might as well try them. Got the CALL ME DADDY BURGER, THE SKIRT BURGER, THE MIXER (Smash burger), snd GARLIC STYLE FRIES. Everything is decent-sized and good for me, but my Son and wife said that for them The Skirt burger and The Mixer smash burger had too much mustard taste on it. The Call me Daddy burger was delicious, just too messy to eat, but it's good. The staff were very nice, Joanna Marie is super friendly and attentive to what we may need, plenty of parking, and lots of spots to sit outside and inside. I had invited a friend to lunch. We looked at Wildflour but it wasn't what we wanted. We had been to con Pane (wish they had salads) and I remembered that Slater's was next door. It is gone so we tried The Mixer. The menu had a variety so we decided to try it. They had patio and indoor seating. My friend had a club sandwich (it was huge) and I had a strawberry and greens salad. Our food was great! Our server was super nice. I would definitely go back! Im between a 3 or 4 star review. The apps were ok. The jalapeno app was strange. The jalapeno was raw with some gewy cheese and little bacon bites. Great location! It's in Liberty Station so there's plenty to do around you and walk off the food after dining in. There's several tvs so you can watch games. Now about the food: Everything is a la carte. So, the burger is $13.50, but then you have to add fries for $6.50. My hubby ordered a burger and my son ordered a chicken sandwich. I ordered the classic sandwich. We also ordered two baskets of fries, Brussel sprouts for an appetizer and my son ordered an Oreo shake after dinner. We all enjoyed our food, but my sandwich was by the far the BEST! My recommendation is to ask for a side of purple onion because it does not come inside of it... trust me ! It makes all the difference! The sandwich is BIG! And sooooo good! The Brussels were good too, but honestly could use feta cheese sprinkled on top to offset some of the bitterness of the veggie... but nonetheless, still good. My family enjoyed their burgers as well. Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. They've changed both the name and the menu. I normally get a plain burger, I couldn't find it on the menu so got the skirt burger instead, thankfully the burgers taste just as good as Slaters! The drink was good as well, a twist on a chocolate martini. Service was great as always. The only sad part was that the sweet potato fries no longer come with the pumpkin sauce - what a shame! I went here alone for lunch at noon on a Friday. They were not busy at all. I hadnt been in since the ownership changed from Slaters. Except for the name and the new (cheap) signage and paper menus nothing had changed. I ordered a specialty burger, fries and an imported beer. It took almost 20 minutes to get my burger, I dont know why since there were only around five small parties present. The burger was good but sort of small for $13 which didnt include the $7 fries. My bill came to $35 which means that speciality beer cost $15?? So $35 for a casual burger lunch. Wow. My first and last visit. read more

Nope. It's still Slater's 50/50 just toned down. The food is edible, but not good. Same as before. It's super greasy and all deep fried gut bombs. I won't be coming back. The staff was great, but they all were maybe overworked because getting them to bring you utensils and basic things that you would assume they'd know to already do was a hassle. We had to get up twice to find someone to get us forks, then napkins, and everything was like a surprise. "Oh, you want napkins? That's crazy". It just seemed very much like they were all new at this, including the cooks. They had an opportunity to redeem this place, but they just refreshed it with the same base problems they had before. read more

Went in on a Wednesday night and there was no one but the waitress/bar keeper. She was very friendly and helped us pick our beer choice from the many choices and took pur order for food. We both had a burger and split sweet potato fries. The burgers were very tasty as were the fries. Hopefully more ppl will patronize The Mixer because I hate to see a good place with good food disappear. We had been to Slater's 50/50 a few times over the years while visiting SD and were sad they closed but The Mixer took over immediately and the menu is the same. This place overtook Slaters 50/50 and that was its first mistake. This was emotionally dingy and the menu is small and printed off 8.5 x 11 printer paper. The food items are near identical with horribly cringy names. They don't even have a build your own burger option. Everything feels cheap. I will fight to bring Slaters 50/50 back. Yes, I'm emotionally attached to the old place. I don't care. Slaters was the go to place to introduce my non-San Diego friends to the wonders of the west coast. I went there thinking I was going to Slater's 50/50- really craving a bacon/beef patty. The building and portable A-frame signage all advertised Slater's 50/50. Checked repeatedly online and this location has a Slater's 50/50 website. Was a bit shocked that when I sat down with my date the menu's were for "The Mixer." Upon asking the wait staff about the discrepancy we were told it's a "different restaurant with the same staff" and that the bacon burger patties were no longer available. This felt like a bait and switch and was very disappointing. At the very least the portable signage should be changed and the website terminated. Hungry, we ordered anyway. The food was very good, no complaints there. The drink, a Bloody Mary, was fair to middling and a bit overpriced at $14.95. The staff was generally courteous. When we received the bill, however, we were charged 0.30 to 0.50 cents more for each item listed on the menu. The paper menu needs to be updated to match the prices charged. This was extremely annoying and, in my opinion, is a form of fraud and is inexcusable. A pen and a moment's diligence can easily correct the menus (to be fair, after checking the online pricing it matched what we were charged but the discrepancy with the physical menu is, again egregious and dishonest). I shall not be going there again. read more

Honestly there were not enough employees for the number of customers but they did an amazing job keeping calm and relaxed while providing decentLy attentive customer service. Unfortunately, the food was not good though and it came out slow... We ordered 3 kinds of burgers (The Mixer, the Bougie, and the kimchi chicken sandwich) the two burgers were not bad but not worth the $11-13, the kimchi on the sandwich was over pickled. The kids chicken tenders, the kids cheeseburger sliders, the kids hamburger sliders came with fries but strangely they were seasoned which it didn't mention on the menu. Picky kids don't typically eat spicy so that was strange. The chicken tenders weren't bad except parts of the outside batter looked burnt. Not just dark... burnt. After peeling some burnt bits off, the inside meat was tasty and seemed to be cooked well. The chocolate shakes for the kids meal were delicious but it came out BEFORE any part of the kids meal was served. If you know kids, they will want to drink it as soon as they see it, and if you know parents, they rather the kids eat their food first, so that was also strange to get dessert so quickly. We ordered the mixer appetizer (choice of 3 appetizers) but our first two choices the Brussels sprouts and fried pickles were sold out (at 6pm). What we ended up with were the jalapeño poppers which the jalapeño was still on the raw side, the fried cream cheese ball was not melted inside, and the deep fried veggies which I didn't mind but wasn't great. My soup came out barely heated. In fact it may have gotten warmer sitting at the table. But the worst dish was the chicken wings in my opinion. The wing that I ate was actually mushy. Like the meat from the bone was bad before they fried it. (I think if they just turned down the fryer temp some of these issues might resolve themselves.) Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be returning any time soon. read more

The good, nice service, came in starving, ordered keep it classy medium well, and sis ordered bougie burger and a side of frys. The burgers came out asked for a knife, cut it in half and it was well done. And frys were either the scaps or over cooked. I did mention it to the waitress, she apologized,the wines are limited to 2 reds cab and pinot noir, not a beer drinker but reds are good with beef in my opinion, and if you bring a date theres options. Meh. We also were wanting a a 50/50 burger and bacon ketchup and fries. Stayed anyway to try the new stuff. The server was great, he explained how everything changed, new concept, same ownership. We ordered the burger and fries and they came out good, solid food, but not better than anywhere else I could go. My husband and I kept saying to each other, this place is weird. Like it has no identity. Hey have the bronze burger out front still, and it says bacon, burgers, and stuff on the wall. They still have a wall of draft beers and tvs playing sports, but then all the new neon signs are pink and they were playing slow r&b music. It felt awkward. Plus a place called mixers, I would guess that they do lots of drinks and they would have an extensive drink menu. If they did, we didn't see it. Only the huge beer list. As we were leaving some people were walking up saying it changed, and I told them it did and that we won't be back. They decided to go to Stone instead. I would be shocked if this place is in business in 6 months. Disappointing. I wish they maybe updated their old menu with more fresh options and kept the old favorites. The new concept definitely has a wider variety of new menu choices, but so does Chili's and Applebees...which I also don't go to. I recommend going to Hodad's instead. read more

We thought we were walking into Slaters 50/50, we should of realized something was up with nobody in the restaurant or bar at 7pm on a Thursday. All three of us ordered various burgers, I had the "Call Me daddy". We also had an appetizer of the Brussels sprouts. The appetizer was our only enjoyable dish. The burger I had was a reheat in microwaved. I say this because the tomato and greens were piping hot, (hotter than the meat). The burger was very dry with touches of burn. We also had fries they were shoestring style and were ok. Sadly we will not be going back. read more
