So I've been here a few times and really enjoyed it. So I made reservations for my friend's birthday dinner for Friday night. It started off good, we found street parking right across the street, no wait at the hostess stand, and they saw us super fast. And that's where the good news ends. We waited close to 20 minutes for anybody to come to the table with water or take a drink order. We then ordered two cocktails and the appetizer of guacamole. I'll have to say the guacamole was really bland. The drinks were good, but just good. My friend ordered the ceviche and I ordered the Caesar salad. The ceviche was OK, but really had no shrimp and not a lot of fish. It was mostly liquid and tomatoes. My Caesar salad was served in a bowl. That was way too small for the portion and the greens were very bitter. We asked for a to go container, and again waited 20 minutes. It was kind of disappointing that we made the reservations and put on there that it was a birthday and nobody even mentioned it. They never circled back around to see if we wanted second drinks or dessert. Didn't check in to see how the food was. Overall, it's very disappointing as I had really enjoyed my last couple of visits. And also kind of embarrassing because I had really hyped the place up for my friend's birthday. The one positive is that they are dog friendly. It's kind of like a Mexican restaurant and a sports bar come together. They play loud music and have TVs that show the Padres games.
We came for Sunday Happy Hour and honestly! We were impressed. All their beverages including alcoholic drinks are 1/2 off during happy hour. As well as all their appetizers and their quesadillas. On this particular Sunday (today), I ordered the carne asada quesadillas and not only was it a nice big portion but they were also very good. My husband ordered the cochinita flautitas and they were delicious, especially dipped in salsa. Speaking about salsa, hubby asked for a spicier salsa and they brought out an habanero salsa that was super spicey. Fair warning! I mean it is habanero chile! The place is very nicely decorated, airy and with lots of plants in the back The service was absolutely amazing! Our server was attentive and very friendly. All in all It was a great experience and will definitely add to our favorite happy hours spots. By the way their happy hour is daily from 3-5pm and I believe they also have a night one from 10pm to close,
Such a cute spot with delicious Mexican food! I loved the surf n turf tacos and queso fundido with chorizo. Their drinks are strong, and my margarita was delicious! Service was good. The dining area is huge and has such a fun vibe, with indoor and outdoor seating. Will certainly be back!!
Was staying in the area while visiting San Diego and kept passing by this spot. It looked inviting and a nice scenery for the neighborhood. Did some quick research and found they have a great happy hour so of course I had to go check it out. Did a walk in around 4pm on a Monday and it was pretty busy! The space is airy and lively. Loved the openness, plants, and friendly service. Happy Hour bites were excellent and were 50% off. Ceviche was fresh, flautas were crispy and the queso was piping hot. Washed it all down with a couple of frozen margs and it made for a great time while visiting. Highly recommend and I look forward to returning when I'm back in San Diego.
I ordered to go, Mix and match tacos and all i received was disappointment. This plate of food comes with 2 spoonfuls of rice and 2 spoonfuls of beans. For $22, I expected an actual meal not a sample-sized side. The photos online make the portions look MUCH bigger than what I actually received. Costco samples of food give more than this. Definitely not worth the price.
This restaurant has great ambiance and is a good choice if you're looking to go out for a nice dinner. I got the street tacos plate with pastor, carne asada, and carnitas. The carne asada was my favorite out of the three. I'm knocking down a star because the carnitas were pretty mushy and bland. If you like spice, ask them for their habanero hot sauce! It has a major kick so a little goes a long way. I also ordered the chips and guac which came with a huge bowl of house made tortilla chips and huge dollop of guac on top. This was some of the best guac I've ever had so I recommend this as a starter for the table.
Let me start off by saying this is the best Happy Hour that my wife and I have had so far in San Diego. 3-5pm every day 50% off all their alcohol to include their cocktails and their appetizers and quesadillas. We got our customary classic Old Fashioneds and they were definitely delicious. My wife then got a Mezcal Old Fashioned and it was surprisingly delicious. The bartenders were very attentive, gracious, and fun to be around. We then got our food which was 50% off because of the happy hour. We got cochinita tostaditas, carne asada quesadilla, and pastor quesadilla. The portions were just right. All 3 items were very delicious! The restaurant/bar was full and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We've been here a few times and will continue to return!
Solid Weekend Happy Hour at La Puerta in Mission Hills! Friendly and fast service, great outdoor ambiance, and yummy half-off bites. They have a good selection of cocktails, including some with carrot, some with Olive juice, but our go-to is the spicy marg with Mezcal, all half-off. Quesadillas, cute flautitas (mini rolled tacos), chips and Guac all round out a perfect little meal. Def added to the Rolodex for weekend Happy Hours in Mission Hills.
We came by this spot since we were craving some Mexican cuisine after hitting up the little Italy farmers market earlier in the day. We came with a pup and this place was listed as dog friendly. The staff were kind and accommodating and even gave our pup some treats and he was behaving well. We ordered a couple of drinks to start off - a margarita and another (I forget the name but it was purple) we got it with salted rims and I'm not sure if they accidentally mixed a bunch of it in because these were the saltiest drinks I've ever had - tasted like I was drinking straight salt water. The server was kind enough to replace these with another drink sans salt rim and those drinks were a lot better. The food itself was solid. The rice and beans didn't hit as much and the rice was on the dryer side. The salsas, tacos, and burrito all hit the mark.
La Puerta has one of the best happy hours--and it's daily, which is a huge plus! Drinks and appetizers are half off, making it such a great deal. Highly recommend the Purple Haze (a sangria margarita) and the steak quesadilla. Also, don't forget to ask for the complimentary chips and salsa! Great vibes, great prices--definitely a go-to spot.
Went here for lunch and the service was quick and efficient. Staff was great and the food was solid but I wish you didn't have to pay extra for sauces. The restaurant itself is super cute. We got: - Carne asada quesadilla: 8/10 my boyfriend got this and said it was good - Surf 'n' turf tacos especiales: 8/10 the steak and shrimp on this were cooked well. I wish there was more flavor to it but it was overall well made - Guacamole: 9/10 this was delicious! Probably my favorite part of the meal
La Puerta is a delicious eatery serving tacos, burritos, and all-around good vibes in Mission Hills. They also have another location downtown. We visited the Mission Hills spot and had a really great experience. I ordered the surf and turf one-pound burrito, and it did not disappoint. It had a nice kick of spice and was easily big enough to share or take half home for another meal later, which I definitely recommend. The drinks were well-made, the staff was friendly and welcoming, and the overall atmosphere makes it a fun spot for a night out with friends or even a casual date. Definitely recommend La Puerta. This place is seriously delicious.

A few of my friends were visiting from NYC & we were looking for some late night eats/drinks and decided to come here. It was around 10:15pm on a Thursday night and the kitchen was about to close. We ordered a bunch of food and shared. Here's a run down of everything we had: STREET TACOS: we tried the following:: (they were out of the shrimp) El pastor tacos (5/5) Pollo asado tacos (4.5/5) Carne asada tacos (4/5) the steak was overcooked IMO It comes with rice and beans on the side and it was all delicious!! We also ordered fries which were delicious and the Al pastor quesadilla. I will definitely be coming back for these because they were fire!! The spicy margs are also delicious! Such a great spot for Sunday funday!! They have happy hour specials every day from 3-5pm and you get 1/2 off all drinks and appetizers. It's such a great deal and the food and drinks are actually good so it's definitely worth it. Our server was also super sweet and cool, she gave us lots of suggestions and was joking with us and just a good vibe. The restaurant and bar area were all super full but it never felt overly crowded and we only had to wait 5 minutes to get seated. This is such a great happy hour spot. We tried the flautas, queso fondido with chorizo, and the civiche. We loved it all!! We also tried the frozen margaritas which were the perfect consistency. Not too icy, not to sweet, and it this head wave it was so refreshing. read more

We were looking for somewhere to go that was dog friendly, and La Puerta came up. We drove by one evening and it was packed! So we came in for brunch, about 30 minutes after they opened. It was very busy which was nice, and the front patio was perfect for Cako. The staff is really friendly! I ordered When Doves Cry...paying homage to the Great Purple One, Prince. DJ decided on a house margarita. Both very refreshing on a still summer Sunday morning! The brunch menu has a nice variety to choose from, but choosing one can be a little hard. I ordered guacamole to start. It came with two delicious salsas. For breakfast, I ordered the pancakes and carnitas. I would say this would be the equivalent of chicken and waffles. This was really good! Especially when you drizzle the syrup on the carnitas and eat it with the pancakes. I also added a couple of scrambled eggs. DJ had the breakfast carne asada potatoes and eggs. Came with guacamole and pico de gallo. Soooooo good! The portions are huge which, in this crazy world of cutting back and charging more, is how it should be. Went here on a whim because the restaurant we had intended to go to was closed. The exterior was cute, and we were seated quickly. The girl seated us was very expressionless, and we couldn't tell if she had seats for us or not. We went in and were delighted with the decorative interior, extensive beer wall, and music themed menus. The server was quick with our food and was lovely. She brought everything we needed and checked in with us. Quesadillas were decent, but the selling point was how they cooked the carne asada. Tacos, chips, and cocktails were okay. Beer was cold and tasty. Nothing special worth noting and I don't think I'll be passing by again. Somethings were pricier than others, but being in this area, it's expected. It was very loud inside. But yes. Nothing exceptional that would make me drive down again. read more
What a fun, happy hour spot! They're happy hour deals included half off all drinks, and a discount on their appetizers in quesadillas. Food was amazing, and drinks were super tasty, I got there a couple minutes before 4:30, and half hour ended at five. They did come around multiple times prior to happy hour ending, and made sure that everybody put in their last chance orders. I love the aesthetic of this restaurant, and the servers are also attentive and kind. I would totally come back! Food was delicious and really hit the spot read more

We went to Mission Hills for a pop-up Christmas experience restaurant but the line was ridiculous. Instead we went to La Puerta and I'm glad we did. The place is super cute and it's has Christmas decorations up. We took advantage of the Tavo Tuesdays deals. Our server, Shawn, is fantastic. He was very cheery since we walked in, made great recommendations and checked on us often, even when it got a bit busier. To start we ordered the refriend beans and it was great and super hot (which I love). For Taco Tuesdays they have $3 street tacos. The pollo asado, carnitas, and shrimp were great options. I got a Paloma that was very refreshing and their tequila flight (as pictured). I'm not sure what tequila brand is used for the flight but it was smooth. Overall it was a great first time experience and I will certainly go back. read more

Suggested by two different people at the AAA office, we decided to try this place. I drove past this restaurant on the way to the AAA office, so it was dejavu to be back in this neighborhood, called Mission Hills. Right away, this place was giving a vibe us Sacramentans don't really have. Sure there are some restaurants in Sacramento that have open air from the patio to the inside, but honestly.....less than a handful. So when I saw, and felt, what I experienced when I walked up to La Puerta, I knew I was in for something special. We were seated immediately and given chips/salsa. The menus that had album covers on the front, with every one being different. The decor was inviting, fun, refreshing and lively. Our server greeted us and took our drink order. The menu is extensive and offered some dishes I've never seen before. Nonetheless, we played it safe and ordered what we know. This is what we got: Torta "La Puerta" This had pork, steak, ham, cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, avocado, onions and jalepenos....whew! It was super tasty and definitely special. That's why it was under the La Puerta Signature Dishes section of the menu. I would order this again, but only after I try about ten other things, so I'll have to circle back around to ordering this anytime soon. Cochinita Tostaditas This was basically a tostada with pork, beans, avocado, cheese, pico de gallo, onion and lettuce. There were five of them and since it was happy hour, it was only like $6!! Crazy value!!! If I was a drinker, like many of the patrons there, I would have had several, considering the money you are saving on food. Definitely coming back for this one during happy hour. This place was amazing. I saw there is another location in Gas Lamp, so you have options. Simply Wonderful!! read more

Wow!!!! Love this place!!!! My high school girlfriends, we all got together and someone picked La Puerta mission hills. The decor was so cool, reminiscing of our times in high school. Our waiter Loukas was amazing!!!! Dealing with 12 women!!!! Great customer service Loukas!!!!! The food was great! The tacos looked amazing. Everyone was raving about the food. I had a Caesar salad and the churros. We had such a great time. I will be back. Our new spot Love it, must try. Parking is a bit tough but so worth it. read more

Walked in because we had some time to kill and I'm so happy we did! Music wasn't too loud but vibey 90s hip hop. Super cool indoor/outdoor resturaunt bar, no frills but has an artsy fun feel. Their happy hour is actually affordable but tastes incredible. We got the flautitas and ceviche and two mezcal margaritas. I highly recommend, both were so flavorful and fresh and the cocktails were really tasty. Also, if you know anything about agave spirits you'll be stoked...incredible selection. The service was great, all of the guys behind the bar were super friendly and attentive. Will for sure be back! read more

Was super busy but got seated very fast! Had TVs to watch the games going on. Our server was super attentive and checked in on us as we were getting our food and drinks. We got burritos, guacamole, and margaritas. All were delicious. The margaritas were wonderful and they give you the option of a salt or tajin rim. First time there. My friend suggested the place to meet for dinner. We got seated pretty fast, the place was full but the service did not disappoint! Alexa was our server and she ia great! She kept checking on us and made sure we weren't missing anything. We ordered the potato flautas as appetizers and he ordered the steak quesadilla and I ordered the surf and turf taco plate. I was surprised to see rajas con crema as a side, but let me tell you they were good! Just how mom makes them. The rice and the beans were on point and the steak... 10 out of 10! Great spot for happy hour!! I went for a happy hour on a Tuesday and was able to get a table without waiting. The happy hour special is from Monday- Thursday 3-5pm and it includes 1/2 off appetizers, quesadillas and drinks. The guacamole was a huge portion and it was tasty. It was my favorite item we ordered. The Al Pastor quesadillas were really good too and it was a huge portion that was perfect for splitting. We also got the ceviche which was just meh. It wasn't as flavorful as the other dishes. I wouldn't order it again. They have a pretty long drink menu and both of our margaritas were good. This was my second time coming here but my experience was so much better this time. First off, the restaurant is beautiful. It has an indoor/ outdoor vibe as there is a roof but it's all open which also means dog friendly. The interior is beautiful with a full bar, a few TVs, and a plant wall. We came for happy hour which is every day 3-6 pm. It's so nice they have happy hour on the weekends too because most places are only during the week. Their happy hour is a great deal- half off bar drinks, apps, and quesadillas. My husband and I got two quesadillas and they were a decent size and very filling. We got one carne asada and one pollo Asado. Initially I really liked the carne one better but I later really liked the chicken one. The meat in both were so tender and flavorful. The chicken was juicy and not dry at all. They came with a Smokey Chipotle salsa that was delicious and a pico de gallo. We also got chips and salsa which were complimentary- you just have to ask! The chips were those crunchy, salty restaurant style chips that are a perfect vessel for salsa. It came out with two salsas, one a tomato base and the other a verde. Both were so good, not too spicy but with a great blend of flavors. I think the biggest difference in my experience this time was the service. Our server was Jeremy and he was great. He was genuinely friendly, came by with refills on water and chips often, and never rushed us. There were other staff members circling the restaurant as well for refills. They were getting pretty busy as we left so I would definitely recommend to come early if you want happy hour prices (~$17 for two full meals).
