We are total creatures of habit and always end up at C Level for lunch whenever we're in San Diego, but we've been eyeing Coasterra next door for a while now. Decided to finally mix things up this time, and it did not disappoint! It's definitely an upscale Mexican spot, but the main draw right off the bat is the location. We got hooked up with a waterfront table, and the views of downtown SD and the Coronado Bridge are unreal. Here's what we ordered: Queso Fundido: Started with this and it was delicious. Famous Fajitas (Shrimp & Steak): Hands down the highlight. The meat was super well-seasoned and the charred veggies added so much flavor. Tampiqueña: Really solid and flavorful. Note on the chips: The chips here are a little different than what you usually get at a typical neighborhood Mexican joint--a bit thicker/different texture--but still tasty! Coasterra is easily one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. The food has a great fusion of flavors, and I love that so many of the dishes have plenty of spice and actually taste bold and flavorful. The calamari is a must for me every time I come. It definitely has a kick, so beware if you're sensitive to spice, but it's so good. The queso fundido is another favorite and great for sharing. I've tried quite a few of the entrées over different visits. The Mexican paella was really good, the ancho chile roasted salmon is another standout, and the Pork & Chile Colorado Cazuela was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. Definitely save room for dessert too. The butter cake was delicious, and the churros were just as good. Beyond the food, one of the biggest reasons to come here is the location. The outdoor patio has amazing views looking across the water toward downtown San Diego and makes the whole experience even better, especially around sunset. read more

We got seated quickly and got lucky with a side table and perfect view of the city. We saw it during sunset and at night with all the lights. They give you chips and salsa to start and we got the spicy margarita and strawberry margarita both were tasty and easy to drink. We opted to get the paella for 2 which takes a little extra time to prepare but was well worth the wait. It was so flavorful with all the seafood being a nice touch of salt. It was a little spicy but the cream sauce balanced it well. The rice was fluffy but crispy on the bottom. It could've fed 4 people probably. We got a complimentary slice of strawberry tres leches and it was the perfect ending to our meal. So incredibly light and not too sweet. Our server, Abdo made our dining experience even better with his friendliness and attention to the fact that we were celebrating something. An Unforgettable Birthday Celebration! I took my husband here for his birthday this past Monday, and the entire experience was absolutely incredible from start to finish. First, the location and the views are simply stunning. It set the perfect backdrop for a celebratory evening. But what really elevated the vibe was the music! The food was good and for the setting (both the establishment and the city) was not overpriced. Our server was friendly and took good care fo us. We likely will not be going back simply because the place was just too loud. My wife and I spent the evening shouting back and forth to each other other. It's quite large, the music is loud, and they don't do anything to dampen the sound. Their giant patio was hosting someone's business event as well as some family affairs, which meant we had a bunch of toddlers (one of whom was in only a diaper) running around on the other side of the glass. That's fine, families have to go out too it's just not what we expected from this particular place when we made the reservation. I am a huge fan of all of the Cohn restaurants. Coasterra is one of the only ones in San Diego that I had never experienced until now. So I was very excited to see what this place had to offer. Celebrated my daughter's 19th birthday here this week, and to be honest, I was not impressed. The location and views from this place are unmatched. Tons of covered patio seating with a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline. As for the food, it was just ok. It was mostly mexican seafood, but there was a good mix of other items like steak and a wagu burger. Everything was served hot and fresh, but in my honest opinion, everything just lacked flavor. Everything I tasted was just bland, and I tasted a little bit of all of my family's meals. But everyone agreed. Maybe we are just spoiled with San Diego Mexican food. My biggest complaint of the night was the service. Our waiter started off well. He took our drink orders and when he returned, asked if we wanted to get appetizers started, which we did. Our appetizers came out and were finished and we still had not seen our server to order our main dinner. This continued to be the issue all night, we were constantly looking and waiting for our server. There were other servers that came around and filled our drinks and took our plates, and they were great! But we really didn't see our main server most of the night. And one of the times that we did walk by, my daughter asked for a new glass of water because she had dropped food into the glass. He took the glass and never came back. I ended up giving my daughter my water. I did notice that the servers at the other tables were awesome. They were attentive, and we constantly saw them checking on their guest. And like I said, we are fans of all of the Cohn restaurants we have dined at before, so the level of service we received is not typical. Maybe our server was new??? I will say, this is not a cheap place to eat. My family of 5 spent almost $240 and that was with no alcohol or desserts. So you would expect to receive a high level of service. So the second time around, I would have to say this was a much better experience. I did go during lunch and not dinner. Our server David was super attentive and welcoming. He kept checking in on our food and we did hit a hiccup which was we put in the order for the kids first, but it didn't come till much after our adult entrées came so again I would say the consistency still need some growth but overall it was much better than my last time. You can see the picture where our food wise and we waited for about 12 minutes until the kids food came. I will give the extra Star because of David and the service that he provided checking in on us refilling our water. Delicious food, great view, and wonderful hospitality! On our last evening in San Diego, we went to Coasterra to wrap up our vacation there. This restaurant came highly recommended by major Visit San Diego websites, and we felt we should give it a try. Located right next to the water, the restaurant offers expansive view of the harbor and the San Diego skyline. Sitting is about 50/50 indoor vs. outdoor, and we chose the indoor sitting as it tended to get colder in the evening. Parking is available out front, but we took Lyft there. We came in around Happy Hour, and we were able to score two appetizers for $11 each. We got fried calamari and fish cervice as appetizers. For entree, we had the fish tacos and scallops. Both of the appetizers were excellent, and the cervice was so light and flavorful. My husband loved his scallop entree, and the taste and presentation were original and outstanding. My fish taco was enjoyable as well. For dessert, we had fresh churro that was paired with ice cream, which was excellent as well. Our meal came to $143 with taxes, which was a very good value with the quality and services offered. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, which made us felt right at home. My daughter held her 3 hour wedding gathering party here, with about 75 attendees, and Coasterra knocked it out of the park for us. Wow! If you're looking for a beautiful view of San Diego skyline and Coronado Island this is the place. It's always a great place to stop before or after going to the airport because it's that close. We originally went there for an early dinner, but happened to meet the happy hour time frame (3:30-5:30). They have a wonderful array of drinks and appetizers to choose from. The most expensive being $11.00. Each appetizer is enough for two people. A man at the bar asked me if I wanted some of his guacamole dip because he could finish it all. He looked like that was his dinner meal too. I declined, since I was favoring the ceviche and chicken tinga tostadas. Both tasted delicious. I heard the bacon wrapped jalapeño were good but not gf. So I didn't try them. The views from our table were spectacular. They had many GF options listed on their menu. The comments do NOT reflect my server, as he was really good So I ventured here from Torrey Pines in the middle of rush hour (clearly a non-resident rookie mistake). The appetizer: This was a total miss. I usually can eat it, but the lack of flavor and depth was disappointing. The main entrée was painful. The lemon added good acidity to the chicken, but they should use thighs if they are cooking it for that long. I will say the skin was nice and crispy, and the food was actually hot. We ended our beautiful "girls day" by having an early dinner here at Coasterra. It was my first time, and my friend had made a reservation for our party of 5. I love Coasterra! I used to live in San Diego and I loved coming here with friends for happy hour and to watch the sunset. Their patio is the perfect place for an outside lunch, dinner or just cocktails. I brought my dad down for his birthday in March and he loved it too. I am not a huge seafood person and I don't love a lot of hot spice, but their Ceviche is amazing! I love that they use lots of spices for flavor and don't just rely on things being overly spicy. We deserve better!" we thought as we waited for our table ordering from their abundant margarita menu at the bar. My adorable accomplice chose the Pineapple Tamarind & I the El Jefe (The Boss, in Spanish), because fortune favors the bold! Spicy Bold with Tajin on the rim! The way life is meant to be lived! With heat, baby! Where was I? Oh, our table's ready. The stunning skyline view paired with the mesmerizing view of the sun setting behind my goddess almost made me forget while we were here...to have dinner. Hey, menus! Ooh, it's Agave Month! I stay with the spicy Latino Heat motif & order the Fired Up! Ghost Pepper Tequila with an actual ghost pepper floating in it. Yeah, that hot! My spicy señorita decided on the Oaxacan Colada, because she's a Mezcal kinda gal. Muy caliente! We also locked in our food order. A Wagyu Poblano Burger with ancho fries for my carnivorous companion! I chose the Pork & Chile Colorado Cazuela with flour tortillas, rice & beans, because carnitas! I was told it was a good choice, as it's rather popular with the staff. Ole! Our server's recommendation did not disappoint. The portions they bring you are surprisingly large. I just finished the last of the leftovers this morning! That cazuela (bowl) was like a singularity of pork...dense AF! Awesome! My girlfriend made reservations for Mother's Day for an early dinner since her mom was in town. The hostess were friendly and led us to our seats. The gentleman/waiter handed us the menu and went on his way. Chips and salsa along with waters for the table were brought and then that was when the service of our waiter went downhill. We ordered the ahi tuna and guacamole for our appetizers but the timing for the meal was so off. It was a long wait before the waiter even checked back on us and which is when I asked for a refill on my water and chips. We had order drinks as well. The smoked old fashion was good and the ahi tuna appetizer portion was plentiful. There were some parts of the diced ahi that was a bit chewy. The gaucamole portion was large and it wasn't until I asked another waiter did my refill of water and chips arrive. For entree, we got the scallops with corn cake, a salad and I had the poblano burger. I asked for the burger to be cooked to medium. When the entrees arrived my burger was overcooked with no pink in sight. The flavor of the burger was good but the burger was definitely dry as can be. The corn cake with scallop was interesting it was almost like the corn cake was a croquet that encased a corn salsa. Overall the food was okay but the service left a lot to be desired. The waiter and the end seemed to put up a fake act when the check came. Since we asked for the check it seemed like the waiter was on hyper speed. First off, the view is absolutely amazing! Overlooking the downtown San Diego high rise buildings. Just amazing. We got here at just before 5 pm and got seated immediately. They have heat lamps outside, so don't be afraid to sit outside even if you get cold easily. What really made the night was the service. Our server was extremely attentive and never let our water glass get less than half full. He saw that our chip basket had a lot of small pieces so he went to grab a new chip basket with fresh warm chips for us to enjoy. The chips and salsa were excellent. We ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas, as well as the mahi-mahi fish tacos. The tacos were great love the flavors and everything that came with it. The fajitas were good, but as I continued eating it, the sauce felt a little bit overwhelming, and subtracted from the enjoyment of the dish. Overall, the service and ambience was 10 out of 10. Definitely a great date spot. If you're wanting to impress a date. The food was good, but I've definitely had better. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area though. read more
