Rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, edamame and inari

Stopped by after picking up family at the airport and we needed to grab something at a drug store. We saw Chef Jun and decided to give it a try. Loved that they had really good happy hour specials, so we ordered drinks and edamame as each of us weighed the menu options. We ended up getting several rolls for some of us to share and one of us got a poke bowl. We all enjoyed the meal. .

So, what do you get when you put two people who absolutely love sushi together at Chef Jun Point Loma? A straight up f'n excellent experience! From the moment we walked in, the cherry blossom and full moon decor set the tone. It was warm, inviting and a little bit magical. Sat in a booth - didn't go for the counter because we were hungry and we both can and planned on eating. Service was excellent. Lilly took care of us like we were longtime regulars. Attentive. Friendly. Fun. Hospitable. It's people like Lily and how she took care of us like she did - just one of the reasons the experience was memorable. Then the food. The fish. The fresh clean flavors and presentation. Imagine a staircase to heaven with Nigiri on each level that curves up and around a bowl of Sashimi. Toss in two hand rolls and I wish I had taken a photo of it all. I only shot the individual servings. BTW, it was the Sushi Kaidan for two that we shared. As for parking, it was a Saturday night and it wasn't an issue. In a large shopping plaza, lots of open AND FREE spaces. If you're even remotely into Sushi, do yourself a favor and go to Chef Jun. It's elevated. Memorable. You're welcome!

When you get 2 Yelp Elites together who are both sushi lovers, you can expect an extraordinary dining experience. To maximize our experience, we went for the SUSHI KAIDAN for two. This was the deluxe assortment of sushi placed on a staircase of sushi heaven. There were 2 pieces of each of the following: amberjack, king crab legs, black cod, black sea bream, halibut, red snapper, shrimp, Hokkaido scallops, yellowtail belly with Hokkaido Uni, salmon belly with salmon roe, bluefin tuna with caviar, and toro with truffle. These were nice thick cuts and the presentation was beautiful. We loved how some of them were served on charred rice that gave it a rich smoky flavor. Twenty-four pieces of sushi was a lot, but on top of that, the Sushi Kaidan came with 2 handrolls and a sashimi plate that had the fried shrimp heads, Kumamoto oysters, salmon belly, yellow tail belly, bluefin tuna, red snapper, and shima aji. All of this was $199, which was a great deal! Honestly, the quality far exceeded our expectations and surpassed some of the high end Omakase restaurants that we've been to. Our lovely server, Lily, took excellent care of us, always making sure our water was refilled and ensuring we were satisfied with the food. We were both impressed with the quality of the fish and loved that it was reasonably priced. Loved the ambiance as well. Next time someone asks me what's a great sushi restaurant that I'd recommend, I will be sure to say it's Chef Jun! I look forward to a repeat visit soon!

The ambiance is very clean, minimalist except for the giant cherry blossom trees next to every booth. The service was just okay. With how not crowded it was, I would expect better service considering how many people were working there. Oh well The food was really good. The ramen was a lovely surprise. Proper toppings. Great seaweed and just the right amount of togarashi to give it gentle heat. I'll be back.

Came here for a late lunch on superbowl Sunday. We were regulars of the Bay Ho location before the Point Loma one opened up. We came to this location because it stays open mid day. Ambiance inside is really cute with the pink cherry blossom trees everywhere. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Food is always fresh. We ordered the spicy garlic edamame, mixed tempura, rainbow roll, salmon skin hand roll, chirashi bowl, and the spicy chicken bento. Tempura could have crispier but the shrimp was cooked perfectly - not overdone like most places. Fish was all delicious. The yellowtail belly, salmon belly, and the scallops were all scrumptious. Spicy garlic edamame (and regular edamame) are always delicious - a must order. Prices are as expected in today's economy, but the chirashi bowl definitely needs more rice.

Beautifully designed! The decor with cherry blossom trees and moon lamps hanging from the ceiling starts off the dining experience with a fantastic impression. In addition, even though the restaurant became quite busy, the noise level is manageable and does not distract from the experience. Our server greeted us happily and enthusiastically. She acknowledged that one of us was celebrating a birthday. Service was provided at a great pace to start, but as it became busier and busier, (note: I overheard our server say that it was busier than she had ever seen), there were two mix ups in orders. Both were dishes bright to our table that actually either belonged to another table or were duplicate orders. We politely corrected and declined the additional plates. They offer three distinct sushi courses at reasonable price points. If you are comfortable with putting your trust in the chefs (they ask about allergies) then this may be your choice of culinary adventure. It was ours and we were pleasantly surprised (see photos). The food was fantastic and fresh. The only item to note, as it was the first time to taste for one in our party, was the uni. Lots of hype with uni as a special treat, but unfortunately the coloration and a bit dark and the taste was a bit fishy. Not the fresh creamy, ocean taste of the finest uni. One small disappointment in what was so many other home runs. I always judge a meal by one simple metric: would i come back? The answer for Chef Jun...yes

My guy and I stopped here while we were shopping at TJMaxx/Homegoods nearby. This has now become our new favorite every day sushi spot! We were shocked by the quality for the price we paid. We loved the setup and our server was amazing (I can't remember her name)! I tried the Calpico Chu-Hi to start and wow! It is insanely good and dangerous! It has such a lovely taste and texture to it. I easily could've kept drinking it with no complaints. We started with the Chicken Karaage and it's different from any other chicken karaage I've ever had because they air fried them. These weren't greasy/oily, but still packed with flavor. I didn't use the sauce it came with either. For sushi, we tried the Avati roll (had a nice kick to it, but I would order it without pepper next time just because I'm not a big fan of pepper), the Chef's Special roll (very good again but would not have the pepper. I forget what fish was on top, but it was very buttery), and some Unagi (Eel) Nigiri (the BEST eel nigiri my guy and I have ever had! It was a huge piece of eel that was insanely buttery!) This place is too good. I wanna keep it a secret from the rest of you, but I also want you to experience the goodness.

Why haven't I come here sooner LOL Food: Avati Roll (7/10) -- Peppery with a nice balanced sauce, not too heavy. A little spicy kick but nothing overwhelming. It had that seared tuna flavor that I love because it's a bit smokey. Orange Roll (8.5/10) -- This is going to sound dramatic but it was an explosion of flavor the second I tasted it LOL. Super flavorful, fresh, and CITRUSY. Light spice that just boosts the flavor without taking over. Fire Fire Roll (8/10) -- I was told this is their most popular roll across all the Chef Jun locations and really represents them. It was really good! Creamy filling, seared smoky top, and a subtle eel sauce flavor that ties everything together. Service: The loveliest service ever. We asked for recommendations and got a detailed rundown of their most popular dishes. He even suggested options based on our preferences. Constantly checking on us, really friendly, and very conversational. Ambiance: Such a lovely sushi spot. I love cherry blossoms, so having the trees as the main decor all around the restaurant was honestly so fun for me. Even the utensils were cute! They have a tiny cat as a chopstick holder. The space is clean, well-decorated, and even though it was a bit crowded, it wasn't loud at all. A calm and chill dining experience.

Made a reservation and didn't wait to order but the later it got, the place got really packed. I thought the food was good, the salmon oshi was my leas favorite but the quality of the fish was great. The main downside was the service. It took us almost a whole hour to get all of our food and our server never filled our water, I had to ask other workers for more water. I definitely think they are understaffed. The restaurant itself was very pretty and looks clean, there's Sakura trees everywhere.

I have always been a huge fan of Chef Jun, been going to their original location for a long time. I came here for lunch and discovered they have the best lunch. 16.99 for a giant poke bowl and miso soup is a crazy deal! It was so much food with very premium fish. Thank you Chef Jun

We started with our usual order of miso soup and garlic edamame. Delicious!

16-Nov-2025 Today our normal sushi spot was closed, so we tried Chef JUN and it was a very pleasant surprise. The ambiance is the best we've experienced in San Diego. It is one of those "instagramable" type restaurants with the beautiful fake pink trees and good lighting. We tried the house rolls and they were amazing!! With no wait and great service we think this place may have just snatched the number spot for sushi in San Diego. Thanks, Ashley & Lindsey

I love a good lunch special and Chef Jun delivers with the Poke Bowl and Miso Soup combo. Food came out beautifully prepared and was quite fast. The rice at the bottom of my bowl had a fabulous nutty taste, and it was piled high with fresh greens, pickled cucumbers, seaweed salad, avocado, and corn. I always find corn to be kind of a funny poke topping, but I know it's popular. The server was very attentive and came to me right away. The ambience at this location is much nicer than the original location at Bay Ho, and I venture to say that my dining experience overall was better! I've been to the original location twice, and was not impressed. I also love the super chill music that was playing in the background. My lunch was so relaxing. I really enjoyed myself.

Amazingly tasty sushi in a beautiful space under the cherry blossoms. Almost as good as the sushi was the presentation and dishes they were placed on. Our sushi arrived spaced out so that we could enjoy a dish before the next one was brought out.

The gyoza was PHENOMENAL. We had it pan fried. The karaage was more like chicken nuggets and we LOVED Them too. The rolls were all top notch. We are picky about our rolls (one of us lived in Japan for a hot second) and the rice was perfectly cooked and the seaweed was fresh. The cuts were each tasty. It's a small place with a few tables and a sushi bar. The service was exceptional! Very lovely people wanting to ensure you are having a good experience. For parking there is always easy parking in Liberty Station. I recommend either parking in front of the Trader Joe's (there's a walkway between Trader Joe's and Chick Fil A. Go through there and the moment you pass the math tutoring place it is on your right). Or you can park on the corner of Decatur and Womble (from there you can go the walkway to the left of the Navy Fed and at the first opening go left and it will be there). We will definitely be returning!

Lightly seared, topped with jalapeno, and paired with real wasabi root instead of that green dyed horseradish impostor. Clean heat, real flavor, no shortcuts. The salmon skin hand roll was another standout. Generous, crisp, and cooked to order. Too many places hand you salmon skin that has been sitting around at room temp which is still enjoyable but not the same thing. Ikuru does it right. Wrapped with radish sprouts and cucumber. My wife ordered a roll with spicy tuna. I tried it to be fair. And look, I respect the genre, but spicy tuna is just not for me. It is mushy paste that is a spicy mayo vehicle IMHO. The crunchy spicy roll... so I asked if they could swap the spicy tuna for fresh loin. They said yes without hesitation for $3.50. That substitution turned the roll into something genuinely delicious. Clean fish, great texture, and the crunch actually meant something. If there is one downside, it is the special roll menu leans heavily on spicy this and spicy that, or imitation crab in almost every option. I do not mind an upcharge and I do not love making special requests of the chef. I would just appreciate a more varied selection so the creativity of the kitchen can shine without needing edits. Ikuru Sushi is still the kind of place that respects ingredients and respects the customer. Fresh fish, thoughtful preparation, and a willingness to customize without attitude. A very solid spot and absolutely worth returning for another round.
