Tamari Zushi is one of those places that makes you feel like you're rolling dice with the sushi gods. You walk in knowing the fish will be pristine, almost jewel grade, but everything wrapped around that fish is a coin flip. It's the kind of spot where the same roll ordered on two different Tuesdays can feel like two entirely different chefs were battling for custody of your palate. The cuddle fish appetizer is the exception. That dish is their north star. Clean, tender, almost meditative. It's the one thing on the menu that never seems to wobble. Then there's the vibe. Tamari doesn't just lean into its aesthetic, it sprints headfirst into it. The dining room feels like a Japanese fan BOYZ clubhouse curated by someone who inherited a storage unit full of anime merch and decided to display every single item. Even the bathroom commits to the bit with a Tokyo garage sale energy that's equal parts charming and unsettling. You don't forget it, even if you want to. Parking is a small tragedy. You earn your meal before you even sit down. And the service. You're getting high quality fish, no question, but you're also getting a side of attitude that feels baked into the experience. Not hostile, just that particular brand of "you're lucky to be here" confidence that some sushi spots wear like cologne. Tamari Zushi is the paradox you keep returning to. Inconsistent rolls, eccentric decor, parking that tests your patience, and a server who might judge your order. But the fish is so undeniably fresh that you forgive everything the moment the first bite hits. It's a place you critique on the drive over and defend on the drive home.

Black Pearl Roll

Came here with a buddy for lunch to try some sushi rolls. We ordered 4 sushi rolls and the kaarage for an appetizer. The sushi rolls we ordered were the Tuna Scale, Crunchy Dragon, Black Pearl, and the Red Tiger. The sushi were all pretty solid, but I felt like the menu and the rolls we got all kind of tasted very similar. Most of the menu's rolls felt redundant or too similar to each other. Our favorite was the Black Pearl roll because it was the most distinctive amongst them. The karaage was good and came out piping hot. Service was friendly and there was ample parking in the parking lot. They also have lunch specials but I didn't come on a non holiday weekday.

This is my go-to sushi place. I probably come here twice a week. The place is decorated so cute and they know my order now. The manager and workers are so sweet, accommodating, and quick. The fish is SO fresh it's insane. I've tried about half the menu and every single thing was amazing. The prices are super affordable including the Teishoku Trays that come with miso, rice, and an entree and it's ONLY $12-14. UNBELIEVABLE!!!

Lunch special chicken katsu curry.

We came here for their lunch specials. We had their karaage, edamame and 3 temari sushi and chicken katsu curry. The karaage was juicy and temari was fresh. The katsu was also juicy but the batter was crumbly and fell apart. The curry was a bit watery. Both were filling and good value with lunch special pricing which includes salad and miso soup. We will definitely return to try other items. Decor was fun and restaurant was clean.

This is our favorite spot for beef yakisoba. Such great flavor. I also love the tempura cali roll and the mochi. Chocolate and mango are my favorite. Plenty of free parking in the parking lot. This place is fun and has lots of interesting things to look at. Good for kids too they even give them the chopstick trainers so they can eat with chopsticks too.

Came in because the temari caught my eye, but ended up going with the sashimi gozen for my dinner. This comes with nice thick cuts of fish, two gyoza, a good portion of chicken karaage, sushi rice, miso soup and salad. The sushi rice had a nice vinegary tang to it, and the texture was just right. This is a lot of food, so you will be full. Had I known how much karaage would come with this order, I wouldn't have ordered my toddler a whole karaage dinner for herself. Her karaage pieces were the size of her fist lol I like that they put all the sauces on the side as well. In true fat girl fashion, I ordered a sushi roll as well. I went with the Black Pearl as it was suggested as a fan favorite. TBH it was just way too lemony for me. It overpowered the spicy tuna and torched salmon on top. The roll was a good size and made well though, it's just a taste preference on my end. This is a casual sushi spot with affordable eats. The quality is consistent with the pricing, and while it may not be the best sushi spot out there, it's definitely worth the visit if you're looking for an inexpensive sushi dinner. The servers are very nice and accommodating and they were kind enough to give my daughter some chopstick clips so she could eat with them. BTW I love the pokemon decor! Soooo stinkin cute!

This is a casual sushi place. The nigiri and the rolls were solid. The Toro that they had on offer on special that day was outstanding. The service was good -- things came out quite fast for sushi. A good place overall.

Tuna pepper roll

Such a fun find. The service was super attentive, the vibe is casual with a quirky Doraemon/anime touch, and the menu did not disappoint. The tuna pepper roll was a standout, so good. Definitely coming back.

Great casual sushi spots. They have unique rolls called Zushi. All the fish is fresh and the service is nice.

salmon sashimi gozen tray

one of the best sushi places in san diego. the fish is fresh, soft, not grisly, it's perfect. the hot items are just as good. and they have nigiri wednesday each piece of nigiri is $2.50 the restaurant is also so cute and the workers are always so nice

Everything was great. Good service. Pokémon all over the room. The dragon roll was the best. Ramen was also pretty great. 10/10 will come back.

This spot is a winner! I came here hearing about the great menu offerings and not only was the overall presentation and comfortable experience a bonus, but the flavors of the sushi were all terrific. Service was fast and attentive on a weekday night. The food comes out quickly. I was happy to order chu-toro off the special menu and it was a good portion, melt-in-your mouth soft and fairly priced. My group primarily chose roll combos and they were all very unique and tasty. The option to substitute blue crab made for an extra tasty dinner. I hope to come back soon because there are so many good looking menu options. Added plus, parking lot is good. (Side note for book lovers, the one in the same plaza is perfect to walk off dinner and it is extremely well curated.)

Big tea ball

A hidden sushi gem and total surprise, the decor is so cute... Pokémon and the menu is huge, with pictures as the dishes are colorful with edible flowers and a mixed use of fish eggs, sauces, sliced vegetables, and they have delicious roasted green tea! I craved a shrimp crunchy roll, ended up eating 2 crunchy shrimp hand rolls, 6 sushi temari balls loved the fruit sauce as an edible garnish, my green tea was roasted and tasted rich on its own, it had a monster tea bag inside with no strange floating leaves, which is a plus. If I had more room in my stomach I would have pigged out more... a must return visit is due and I will make this place my go to sushi hidden gem. The prices are so reasonable, (shhh... under $16 a roll; as I've paid $22 elsewhere) for this food, it's fresh, the server was friendly and polite, patient with poise. They have happy hour, lunch specials, udon, ramen, omakase, hand rolls, rolls, and etc. I took some pictures of the menu legend, extra prices, and some helpful information. Will be returning soon for another visit!

About a year ago, some friends want to try the food out here and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much it had improved! So imagine my surprise where I came in this evening and was completely floored with how abysmal it has somehow become again with only the last few months. The service has been insultingly, rude; we had a talk with our server and even pass along a compliment, it was shocked with how unkindly they responded. Every single item of the menu has been absolutely terrible; the sushi was a quarter of the size it usually is and tastes terrible, the edamame is cold and feels like it was scraped off the floor, and the karaage chicken is now covered in a glaze that is making our stomachs absolutely sick. And the food is even more expensive than it was before! I absolutely do not want to pay for any of this and it makes me sick to my stomach to have wasted our time here this evening.

I got the shoyu ramen, chashu rice, and a cold oolong tea. The ramen was fine in texture and al dente. The broth was flavorful, without being oversalted. I was very impressed by the chashu: it was carefully cooked and just melts in your mouth. Extra tender. The oolong tea really hit the spot too. The food came quickly, and service was good. I just came back from Japan last month, and this place in San Diego did not disappoint. I would definitely come back again to try their other items. Sorry no pictures this time, as I was famished. It is a really cute place, feels authentically Japanese inside, but also authentically small, so I recommend reservations for a larger group: we were a party of 7 on a Saturday evening around 5:30 with no reservation and we had a wait of around 40 minutes. Definitely worth trying at least once.

That said, the waitress we had was very kind and attentive, and the food was decent, so we decided to give the place another try. After a long day at Legoland, we returned around 6pm and I had called ahead to make a reservation for four. The person on the phone took my name and number, so I assumed we were all set. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't even full, but no one greeted us for several minutes. Eventually, a waiter came over, and when I mentioned our reservation, he seemed confused and said they don't take reservations for parties under six. I tried to explain that someone had taken my information over the phone, but he interrupted me multiple times and didn't let me finish. He then walked over to another group behind us and asked if they were there first, even though we had arrived before them, which was frustrating. We were eventually told there was space available at the bar seating (bar stools) instead of a table. At that point, we were tired and hungry, so we accepted. Unfortunately, the service didn't improve. The waiter seemed rushed and disorganized--he couldn't remember our order and had to ask us which dish belonged to who when the food came out. As for the food, it was okay but not memorable. My ramen was just average--the pork was dry and the egg was overcooked. Overall, the food is decent, but the service really needs improvement. This particular waiter clearly needs more training, or possibly a different role, as the level of service did not meet basic expectations for a restaurant. Our second visit left a bad impression, especially since it was our last night in San Diego. Sadly, we won't be coming back.

Some restaurants become part of your travel memories & Underbelly is absolutely one of those places…read morefor us. When we visited San Diego back in 2016, we ate at Underbelly twice because it was just that good. Returning this trip felt a little like revisiting an old friend. And I'm happy to report... it was every bit as awesome as we remembered! The best part? The staff affectionately called us "O.G.'s" when they heard we had been longtime fans, which immediately made us feel welcome & set the tone for a fun dining experience. We started with the kimchi because some traditions simply should not be broken. Tangy, punchy, spicy & full of flavor, it was the perfect opening act before the ramen arrived. I opted for the Tonkotsu Ramen: rich tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg & chashu pork. The broth was deeply savory & comforting, the pork tender & flavorful, that perfectly soft egg tied everything together beautifully. It was exactly what ramen dreams are made of. Hubby went with the Underbelly Ramen, extra spicy: tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg, chashu belly & adobo pulled pork. The extra spice brought serious heat & he was thrilled with every fiery bite! There is something incredibly satisfying about returning to a restaurant years later & finding that the magic is still there. Underbelly delivered the same bold flavors, cozy ramen comfort & cool Little Italy energy that made us fall in love with it the first time around. Not every restaurant earns a repeat visit nearly a decade later & even fewer live up to the memory. Underbelly absolutely did. We will be O.G.'s forever! NOM NOM NOM #YUM
