Not sure what it is with some sushi places in San Diego, but we've tried three different ones in the span of a week and they all had a very chewy Nigiri. In addition to that, we ordered albacore and tuna, and I could not detect any difference in taste between them, and the taste itself was just very bland. So, I cut my losses and went with a chicken teriyaki dinner and it was OK. Nothing special. Huge menu of rolls but they all seem like different combinations of essentially the same thing. I have decided to update my review of Umi Sushi, as it has become a staple in our home on casual nights when we are craving sushi. When I wrote my last review, we had been ordering delivery, and had missing items in some orders. Over the years, Umi Sushi has become our go-to sushi spot for takeout and delivery. We probably order from Umi about once a month. My favorite dish is the chirashi bowl. The selection of fish varies a bit each time, but it is almost always a great variety usually featuring salmon, tuna, hamachi, shrimp, and tomato with tobiko. In the past, they used to forget the miso soup that comes with the order. Now when I order delivery or takeout, I simply specify not to forget the soup, and they haven't. My husband enjoys their rolls and has a few favorites he orders regularly. I have never dined inside this restaurant, but I am sure that we will continue to order in the future. read more

The sushi here is very good. They have a nice variety with good quality. We tried a few rolls and the a combination sashimi plate. All was tasty. The sashimi slices were a good size. This restaurant doesn't skimp on quality or quantity. The service was good and interesting. The younger server was always nice and helped us with smile. t's honestly been a long time since I had very fresh fish but the quality here is excellent. All of the fish was as fresh as I've had and buttery in texture. Served at the perfect temperature. I only had the chirashi and saba and toro nigiri so I can't give an opinion on the whole menu but it was very very good. read more

My coworker recommended Umi Sushi and I'm so glad we left our neighborhood to check it out! We opted for some seats at the sushi bar so that we could watch the ball game on the tv. We placed all of our food order directly with the sushi chef which I always enjoy. I ordered a house salad to start and it was massive, fully and veggies and a bright, refreshing dressing. For main dishes, I ordered a sushi roll. The rolls here are massive so one was enough for me. My husband ordered sashimi and it was a huge portion. The only thing we probably wouldn't order again were the wings. They were a bit too greasy for me. The restaurant has their own parking lot which is very crucial in this busy part of shelter island. Stoped at Umi Sushi for dinner and it was great! We were greeted and seated quickly. The place was inviting and clean. We didn't want a bunch of leftovers so we shared a salad, edamame and did the pick 3 combination which we chose teriyaki chicken, California roll and sashimi which had tuna and salmon. I would say my first experience of this spot was average based mainly on quality of rolls and how they address mistakes. The service I would say was good. We were able to immediately be seated for a table of 4 and they take your order by having you fill out a paper copy. The server read back our order to us to confirm what we had marked. I wanted to make an adjustment to one of the rolls, and they were accommodating to switching the spicy krab for regular krab. The issue started when my group had ordered garlic tuna nigiris. They gave us nigiri that was not garlic tuna (It looked like yellowtail nigiri?). We had told them we ordered garlic tuna nigiri and she apologized and took it back. About 5 minutes later, they placed what looked like the same nigiri rolls, but with garlic put on top. We once again told the server that we ordered garlic tuna nigiri. She apologized again and took it back and finally gave us the correct order. The server was apologetic for it... but it was really off-putting that they placed what looked like the same rolls but added garlic on top of it in front of us after a period of time. The second comment I would make about this place is that although the taste of the rolls were good, the quality of how they were made were just 'ok'. I noticed that my rolls were not tight and the filling fell apart quite easily. We ordered the citrus salad before roll with shrimp, tempura, crab, cilantro, mango, talked with albacore. Also, the Seaworld roll with shrimp, tempura, spicy crab, cilantro, topped with tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and sliced lemon. Both were prettygood, but have had better. Came for sushi, will come back for James. A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I visited Umi Sushi for the first time and chose to sit at the sushi bar easily the best choice we made that night. We were taken care of by James, the sushi Chef, and the entire experience stood out because of him. From the start, James made us feel comfortable and recommended dishes based on what was best and freshest that day. You can tell immediately that he truly understands fish and flavor. Every piece he served was beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, and extremely fresh. Watching him work at the bar was impressive. His knife skills were smooth, confident, and precise the kind you only see from someone who's been doing this at a high level for a very long time. It felt like being served by a chef with 30+ years of experience, not just someone assembling rolls. We ended up trusting him completely and letting him guide the meal, and everything he made was excellent. The sushi had care, detail, and pride in every bite. Have been here twice since my daughter lives close by. My first visit was on a Saturday and it was just ok. We didn't know you needed to sign in first to get a table. The servers would just walk by without greeting the customers. The rolls were really good and my husband really liked the cut and portions of the sashimi as compared to other sushi places we have been to. They did unfortunately forget to make one of our rolls and we kept waiting thinking it would be out soon. We finally had to as a server to check on it since we were almost done and it was never made. This place has great yummy food but the service is lacking. The second time I went was much better. It was on a Monday night so not as busy and server was more attentive. The food was great. Came here this past week since one of my friends was craving sushi. I normally don't ever eat sushi unless I'm going to an unlimited spot so this day I got a combo that included 2 hand rolls, chicken teriyaki, and miso soup. I didn't take any pictures cuz I was too hungry but everything was good. We also ordered 3 bottles of soju, we tried the sugar free one, never again lmao!! We also got the Umi Viking which comes with 9 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi, 2 hand rolls and a dragon roll. Served with miso soup. This was about $60 - not worth it. One hand roll was tuna and the other was artificial crab, pretty disappointed there was no salmon. The sashimi was not very fresh either. The crispy crunch roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, krab, cucumber. Top: crunch, potato crunch. Sauce: spicy mayo, eel sauce) was decent. I would have just preferred it come with the spicy mayo and not eel sauce. The spicy mayo was kinda floating on the top of the eel sauce and didn't look appetizing. My boyfriend and I regularly come here for a Saturday dinner. It is our favorite sushi place in San Diego!! They have great portions of fish and a lot of interesting rolls to try. We always sit at the bar in front of the sushi chefs to get free seaweed & cucumber salad. All the chefs are great, we love Joshua! Something we regularly order is the Love Boat, which is 10 pc sushi, 2 hand rolls, a rainbow roll, and miso soup. This is the perfect amount of fish for the 2 of us! I love the presentation, they serve all the sushi in a big wooden boat!! We have also gotten the Umi Viking which is another boat with more sushi, but we only get this if we have a BIG appetite because it is a lot of fish for 2 people. We have gotten various rolls over our past visits, our favorites include the Seaworld roll (has a small sliced lemon on top which gives it such a fresh citrusy flavor), Citrus Albacore (we love the mustard soy sauce), Fisherman's roll (topped with deep fried onion!), and Umi House roll (lots of flavor!)
