Went to a special event last night with a dj and free photo booth. You had to purchase a ticket to join the event and we were able to get ours the day before the event. We had the rose and thoroughly enjoyed the dj. We will definitely come back to try the other wines in their outdoor patio. read more

Love this place for their massive outdoor area and their quaint indoor bar. I've been here a few times and even hosted a small event of 20 people before. This time around, it was just the 3 of us, to chat over some wine and apps. Had their April featured Pinot, which was amazing (had 2 glasses). It's good to keep in mind that they only sell their flatbreads on certain days and unfortunately, they didn't serve it when we went. So, instead we had the crostinis, which is perfect if you want a little bit of everything, but not sure what to get. My friend got the chicken Caesar wrap, and it was a lot bigger than expected. As far as the ambience, there's seating all around the bar that's located in the middle. So it's convenient to just walk up to the bar to place your order. Had a lovely experience here with my family. Enjoyed a number of wine flights that were quite vibrant. We had a cheese board that pair perfectly and ended up purchasing 3 of our favorite wines. The place is small, and located inside a former military barracks so finding this place can be a bit tricky. Service was limited and not the most attentive, but once you have your wine, cheese, and great conversation, does it matter? I wanted to update my review, as I have been back several times through the years. Since my initial review, there have been several changes.... some better than others. First, I still really enjoy the Carruth Wine Garden. It is nice to have an outdoor space to drink wine right in the center of the city. In general there plenty of parking ,and it is dog friendly. As far as the wine, it is very good. I like some more than others. More recently, I have enjoyed the Unicorn Red Blend ( a longtime favorite) and the Syrah. I love that it is dog friendly, inside and out. My dog loves going there and she makes friends each time. A change that they made recently is that the main garden area is now child-free, which was a positive change in my options, as it had gotten a bit chaotic in the past with children not being very well supervised. The still have a family-friendly outdoor space. In the past, there was always live music when I came. I was there most recently on a Saturday evening and was disappointed that there was no music. Also, the prices have gone up ($18 per glass). Unfortunately, I found the pours to be somewhat inadequate, though it depended which staff member was pouring the wine. They do not allow for outside food, and only make certain dishes certain days of the week, which unfortunately doesn't allow for many options if you are hungry. Water is readily available inside and outside. All in all, it is a lovely place with good wine to come with friends and your 4-legged friends. Had a decent experience here. This place is located in the middle of Liberty Station with expansive outdoor seating and wine choices. There is also a food menu with items such as cheese boards, sandwiches and flatbreads. My group sat ourselves outside on a Sunday and it was pretty crowded due to the live music. We almost couldn't get a spot. You order inside at the bar. I got a glass of rosé for $16. My group did a build your own cheese board which was somewhat disappointing. The gentleman who took our order said that the cheeseboard would be a big size (based on what we chose) and there would be "14 crackers". We decided that would be enough for my group to share. It was disappointing that it came with 4 crackers! Laughable lol. I wish he knew his facts so we could've ordered differently. I liked the taste of the meats and cheeses. You should really hit them up if you come here. If you come at night, make sure they turn on the heater for you, it takes him a minute to get out there to help you up. On a visit to San Diego we visited the Wine Garden of Carruth Cellars. It was a cool and cloudy day so we sat indoors looking out at the garden. We had a delightful lunch - sharing both the Farmhouse Chopped Salad with a flight of Crostini. Each slide of Baguette had different toppings that were delicious. The salad was delicious - with a plenty of flavorful ingredients (Romaine, Radicchio, Salami, Cherry Tomatoes, Red Onion topped with a house made vinaigrette. The five Crostini had unique flavors that was a tasting adventure. We enjoyed them all but I preferred the Marinated Feta Date with Pecan and honey and the Fig with Gouda cheese and Thyme. My wife's favorite was the more savory Hummus Tapenade with Feta and the Herb Chèvre with Sweet Peppers. The ambiance was casual but classy and the service was friendly and attentive. read more

Such a great place! Everything from their outdoor seating area that's dog-friendly to indoor space to their wine and food selection. This is conveniently located on the opposite side of the parking lot of Liberty Station food hall and it's fairly easy to find parking with all of the lots/street parking around. There is a huge "wine garden" sign welcoming you and a nice outdoor area to hang out and drink/eat. I particularly liked the indoor area with their large bar and seating along the walls. All of the ladies working were super friendly and helpful as well! This trip I ordered the Bartender Choice flight reds and I enjoyed them all. My favorite was probably the Tempranillo. This is, literally, one of our favorite places in San Diego. Either for a Saturday afternoon hang out, or a date night place to relax, Carruth is ideal. It has it's own courtyard, tucked away from the foot traffic of liberty station. It also has a bar / interior space that is, frankly, liminal, being some where near eccentric and cozy, all at once. The patio is dog friend (big bonus in my book), with multiple types of seating options and seems to handle multiple small groups with ease. The staff has always been knowledgeable, and always cheery. They have a narrow variety of food options, but the ones you'd expect with wine typically. Unexpected is a grilled cheese sandwich that makes you throw rocks at your childhood standard. Hard to manage, and harder to quantify, and sounding a bit ridiculous when I say it out loud, but they get the vibe right. It's never raucous, but also, never pretentious. This review is specifically for the Noir Nights event hosted on 1/24/2026. The event was poorly organized. They reached capacity after an hour into opening and stopped letting people inside but did not have the common decency to let the rest of the line wrapping around the building know so our group was waiting for over an hour right in front of the event entrance even after being told they would let us in when more people left. All while people were sneaking in right in front of their faces and not doing anything about it. This negatively impacted our perception of an event that clearly does not care about its patrons or community. The music and venue were the only highlights. read more

Located near Liberty Public Market, Carruth Cellars has inviting outdoor and indoor seating with music two nights a week. It includes a cheese shop with a broad variety to order on cheese plates or take home. The main menu offers charcuterie, sandwiches and crostini, salads...lighter, cheese forward fare, beautifully presented. It's also near SD International Airport, so planes fly over frequently during takeoff. This is a bonus for toddlers who love planes! My grandson calls the place "cheese and airplanes". It's an urban winery. They make their own wine from stemming to crush through fermentation, purchasing from different wine regions in trucks especially designed to transport grapes quickly and safely. The wine club is a decent value with a weekly complimentary glass and monthly bottle. There is also a cheese club! In my family we are members of both the wine and cheese club. It makes for some great family gatherings. Service is super friendly. They make customers feel welcome right away. It's a relaxing open space near the bustling market. I recommend a visit. read more
