I love the concept here- rotating sandwich menu every few weeks to keep it exciting! I got D's Maryland Monroe. It was pretty good, but I was expecting the chicken to be hot/warm instead of cold. The bread seemed a little hard as well. All that aside, there was a ton of chicken on my sandwich and the sweet chili sauce was such a great addition! The French onion soup was delicious and perfect for a snowy day in Syracuse. The caprese pasta salad was very rich, but wish it had more tomatoes. I told them it was my first time & they gave me a free drink, and all of the staff were very friendly. The shop wasn't too big, I got there around 1pm and seating was limited, so something to be aware of! I'd definitely go back to try a new sandwich and the buffalo mac (they sold out by the time I got there).

For the longest time I'd been meaning to try this place and today was finally the day! Making my pick was easy as I usually get anything turkey and D's Birds of Pear-adise had the added benefit of having fruit! A nice balance of sweet & savory. As someone who's a fiend for sweet things, I did want a bit more pear but that's just me! Once you make a sandwich on Pasta's stretch bread you've sold me! I'll definitely be back to try their other sandwiches and sides!

From Destiny (Mall) to Darwin down the creek path to sandwich nirvana. Dave & Daryl care about making good sandwiches. Made the walk down to their friendly shop today to see about the hype. It's real and it's fantastic (Seinfeld ref). Here's my three things: 1) They have the hits Lobster Roll, Cuban, The Georgia, The Mojo, and the Meatball. Then they rotate a two week revolving list of sandwiches. Today I had the Mufetta and the Italian meats and cheeses were fantastic. Bread was perfect and soffrito spread went perfect. Highly recommend. 2) Took some sour pickles as a side and they were salty and sour but do not have any dill flavor so don't expect it. Unique taste. 3) Shop is kitschy, clean and the staff was super friendly and helpful. Come on bye they want you to check them out.

I love this place. If you're in the area and looking for lunch, I recommend stopping by. We went here for lunch, and I loved it. The decor in here is very cute and cozy. They have lunch specials weekly; their menu is always changing, which is very exciting. I love their drinks and specials. Their sandwiches have an array of toppings and options you can add. They also have outdoor seating available too. I can't wait to stop back in for more sandwich specials.

This is the type of place that makes me wish I worked downtown (and during business hours). It's highly regarded and well known to be one of the best lunch spots. As soon as you walk in, you get this comfortable feeling that makes you want to be a regular... like you want everyone there to know you when you walk in the door. It's a glimpse into a life I've never had, where you're free and available at the time and place everybody wants to actually be. We've only been a few times, but enough to know whatever you order will be worth it. Just the Pasta's bread alone could turn a PB&J into a five-star meal. I always remembered them being a little higher priced than I was comfortable with. Maybe all it took was just not doubling their prices over the last four years, because $12.00 sandwiches seemed like a reasonable deal when we just stopped by. This time we ordered the Birds in Pear-A-Dise and the Otto Banh, then threw in some BBQ Chicken Pasta Salad, Alfredo Bacon Potato Salad, and whatever their mac and cheese was that day (I forgot to write that one down and now it's changed). Seriously, the Pasta's bread. It's not even their product, but the sandwiches have to be twice as good because they're using it. I was specifically craving some Banh Mi, so as soon as I opened the menu, I saw this option and case closed. My girlfriend and I usually go halfsies on stuff like sandwiches if we're both into them, so I tried both. Even when specifically craving Banh Mi, I still liked the other one better. The meat was regular soft deli pork. It had the fixings like the cilantro, carrots and cucumbers, but the hot pepper mayo wasn't what they should have added. It took all the banh mi vibes out of the sandwich and replaced it with something that made no sense. The Birds in Pear-A-Dise had the same deli feel with the turkey. It was thick cut deli turkey, like the kind you'd buy in a fully wrapped thick-cut heel from the grocery store. At first, all I could taste was the turkey. The raspberry mayo, the pear slices and the brie were a subtle presence that just made the thick turkey feel even wetter. The more I ate, the more those subtle flavors crept in until they carried the whole thing to the finish line. Even when the complex flavor profile came to fruition, there was still something weird about the execution. The raspberry mayo never really came through, and the pear slices were shingled horizontally which needed to be managed with every bite. We couldn't decide on the sides, so we ordered three. The BBQ Chicken Pasta Salad was wet. I mean we opened that thing and both said "Holy crap, that's wet." The noodles were structurally sound and took the creamy sauce by the reins. It was off the beaten path, but easily one of my favorite pasta/mac salads in a while. We concluded that all pasta/mac salad should be this wet, but only if you can pull it off like this. The Alfredo Bacon Potato Salad was so potent. Exactly the flavor profile we wanted, and we usually go for over-flavored, but at times this was like eating straight brie. It was the only thing we finished completely on the first run, because we couldn't stop coming back to it. The mac and cheese was about average. The cheese was thickened pretty hard, gritty to the point where you could feel the flour forming a sort of paste. I wouldn't normally go for that but it worked with the shells and the flavor. We ordered too much, and this was the weak link in our meal, so it fell to the back of the table and I honestly can't recall much about it. This place has been around forever, and they are notorious for their rather sophisticated lineup of lunch items. This is one of the easiest five-stars I could hand out in terms of food, uniqueness, price and atmosphere. I think my high expectations left me a bit staggered when everything wasn't perfectly in order. I can't tell if it's happy or sad that they change their menu so often. I want to try everything they make, but that also means I'm missing stuff every time I don't go there! Life is pain.

This has been on my list to try for a while, but I don't get downtown often. When my husband had a random middle-of-the-week day off, I suggested picking up sandwiches here. Bonus: they were participating in Dining Weeks! Street parking can be tough downtown, especially during the lunch time rush. I got lucky and found a spot and walked into the office building where the restaurant is housed. There was a line about 10 people deep and I thought "oh no I'm going to be here forever!" To my surprise, the line moved quickly and I had my food within 10 minutes. Phenomenal service! There was also some nice acoustic live music happening, which added a nice ambiance. I got the Ships in the Night sandwich, which has fresh mozzarella, marinated portobellos, roasted tomatoes, pesto and creamy balsamic on pastabilities stretch bread. Delicious! My husband had the Tuskafarian. He said it was very good, but liked mine better! I thought $15 for a sandwich, chips and a fountain drink was a pretty good deal! I was so eager to eat, that I forgot to take photos of the food. Their side dishes sound so good and unique, so I will definitely be back to try those!

I've been here before a few times. Service is always fast always friendly! I love this place there's tables available to eat in or take out. Parking is very convenient too. I love the Syracuse feel when you enter. I ordered the chicken and biscuits they were delicious! Ordered a poutine on the ritz sandwich served on Pastas stretch bread very tender roast beef dipped in gravy. That sandwich rivaled Monica's moist sandwich from Friends. Garlic parm potato salad was amazing and Nashville Mac n cheese also amazing! Can't wait to go again!

Yasss!!! A good sandwich in the Cuse! I'm impressed with their fresh ingredients and creative menu. It changes often and I'm never disappointed. Service is fast and efficient. They have delicious bread (from Pastabilities) and an awesome selection of potato chips. Great outdoor seating (for summer). This is a great little spot for lunch. read more

I didn't know this famous sandwich store until I'm leaving syracuse!! And it's so close to the dinosaur BBQ!!! I was so disappointed at myself finding it so late. I spent all my lunch time there several days before I left Syracuse. I went there at 10 am for my last meal in Syracuse. The guys told me that they were making preparations and were not able to provide sandwich within one hour!! So I left in hunger. Although they do open at 9:30 but they won't be able to offer foods until 11. Love their lobster roll, you could really see the shape of the lobster claw. Vegetable sandwich is also amazing!! Even though I don't like vegetable salads, I like their vegetable sandwich a lot!!! Hopefully I could get back one day and have their sandwich again soon!! read more

There is a reason why this place only needs to be open 4 hours a day... it is AWESOME! Had the catfish po boy and planned on only eating half of it, but it was just too good! All of the ingredients are fresh and the flavors are on point. A total must-try in Syracuse!!! read more

Constantly changing menu at this awesome sandwich place. If you're in Syracuse you have to come here for lunch. It's always packed at lunchtime and the sandwiches never disappoint. Ships in the night (the vegetarian option) is amaaaaazing. The balsamic dressing and fried onions are awesome. I've had a bunch of the chicken options, the crab cake sandwich and some of the roast beef- all good. All the time, awesome staff too. read more

My husband has been telling me about the amazing sandwich he had here, and years later I finally got to go! I've never seen a flyer, ad, or commercial for this place, but after eating here I see why they don't need it. It's a SUPER small shop with just a few selections each day, but man are they some amazing choices. The kind of amazing that gets people talking. They use local shops for some (if not all) of their bread and boy does it make a difference. 'd tell you the names of the sandwiches we ate, but I forgot almost as soon as my first bite. Everything is super fresh and packed full of flavor and SUPER filling. That sandwich looks small, but it's a lie. If you are nearby, you have to stop in and see why they don't need to pay for advertising! read more

LOVE this place! I have had a variety of their sandiwches including the lobster roll, midnight train to Georgia, bird in pear-a-dise, and shrimp po boy and they are all outstanding. These people really know how to put quality ingredients together to create delicious food. Although they are on the 'pricier' side for lunch, it is absolutely worth the cost. Only downside to this place is they are not open on weekends! read more

Darwin sandwiches make my $80/month parking fee tolerable b/c I'm right across the street from this oasis of delectable gourmet sandwiches. The dynamic menu is always tweaked by the sandwich artists that make up the heart of the operation. I don't think there is a bad option. Of late I've found foodie bliss with the Perfect Storm, It's No Spring Chicken and Piggy in a Poncho. Even more impressive is the Seinfeld's soup naziesque lock-step process of placing an order, getting your sides and paying. If you're a rookie everyone will know. If you're a seasoned vet then you've called in your order and are in & out before anyone sees you. The front staff operate like a well-oiled machine or a Russian ballet. The staff personalities are bright and sunny while ensuring maximum customer throughput. A must for anyone looking for take out lunch in Clinton Square. read more

This is probably the best sandwich place I have EVER seen by far. It's about $8 for a sandwich which is about 1/3 a loaf of Italian bread (today's was Pasta's bread). The service is so friendly that it is impossible to leave without a smile on your face....and then you start eating the food. I split 2 sandwiches with my gf and each ingredient in each sandwich was of the highest quality, and the taste combinations were utterly amazing. I would highly recommend Darwin for your next weekday lunch. read more

I am rarely driven to write a review, but dang it, I just ate one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. A delicious Southern fried perch with just the right amount of seasoning and crust on it with piquant homemade hot pepper mayo. I wish I had not eaten the whole thing so I could take more bites. I will definitely be back more often even if they're not where I work. As I told the cashier, I had heard good things about Darwin's and he hoped they lived up to the hype. They exceeded it with that Louisiana perch. read more

I have not tried a better sandwich than Darwin's. Let's look past the fact that they pre make the sandwiches earlier. Their flavors are wholly creative, and always have worked together for my palate. Their bread is always of great quality, and has that very spongy significant textures both the benefits of ciabatta and white bread. It can be a little generous on Mayo, which imparts a similar flavor to Jimmy John's sandwiches, however let's not put those two together. Darwin's sandwiches possess a distinct Taste of high quality to them. I've tried to dissuade myself by saying, all I needed is the ingredient list and I can simply make it myself. I beg to differ, as these sandwiches are craftfully made. For only $10, you can pay up front and get your sandwich in literally seconds later. I would not suggest eating in the store, because of its tight seating area. Expect to eat on the go when ordering from here. read more

I went the opening week to their new location and had a truly incredible sandwich. I went back a week or so ago, and my $10 turkey sandwich had literally two slices of turkey, and paper thin slices of pear and brie that you could hardly taste. Mostly, I paid $10 for a nice piece of stretch bread. Here's a suggestion - keep the quality of sandwich that your customers expect, and then charge what you need to charge for them. read more

Finally had a chance to try Darwin this week and wish I had much sooner. The sandwiches are the perfect size, ingredients are fresh, and the staff are super friendly! Darwin is a weekly trip for me. These guys are phenomenal.They make absolutely the best sandwiches in Syracuse, hands down. Pair that with an insanely friendly staff... it just doesn't get any better. I've had at least one of most of their sandwiches and I am always completely satisfied. The Midnight Train is a MUST try, as is their Buffalo Mac. I haven't had the Two Ships, as I am not a big vegetarian person, but I am sure that it would be delicious anyways. These guys are simply awesome and deserve every ounce of praise they receive here. See you there for Fish Fry Frydays! read more

Darwin makes the best sandwiches I've ever had. This is easily my favorite place to eat in Syracuse. Their ever-changing menu is awesome because it forces you to try new things, and the new things are ALWAYS great. The staff are all very friendly, and my only complaint about Darwin is that it's not open on weekends! I get most of my Darwin cravings on the weekends and I'm always disappointed that I can't get my fix. read more

Best sandwiches in the world. Amazing ingredients, local bread, fresh creations every week. The Midnight Train to Georgia is my favorite, with beef frizzled onions and horseradish mayo. There are great sandwiches with every meat. The staff is always friendly! It can get busy but is very fast. It's takeout only, but I wish they had a bigger space for eat in! read more

We are a division of RILEY'S (on Park St.) that specializes in bringing popular, gourmet sandwiches from around the country, right here to Syracuse. We roast our own meats, we make all of our sauces, soups & spreads from scratch. Our bread comes in from local bakeries fresh every morning. We buy all of our product/produce from local farms and other small businesses. Our menu changes every week to incorporate the latest recipes and the freshest ingredients. Office catering and delivery are also available with sufficient notice. We look forward to seeing you at the counter soon.

Established in 2010.

Darwin in the joint venture of Daryl McGrew & David Holtman... two friends with over fifty combined years of food service experience. We both have a passion for food, and with the help of co-owner Terry Riley we have succeeded in bringing that passion to the Syracuse downtown community. Meet the Business Owner: Daryl M.

I started in the restaurant business at the age of twelve, bussing tables in my family's Italian restaurant. I fell in love with the business then, and have worked some aspect of the restaurant business ever since. I worked my way to a Business degree from Syracuse University while waiting tables at Syracuse's famed Riley's Restaurant. Upon graduation Terry Riley (Owner) helped me in getting Darwin open, a passion project of mine for many years. It's off to an amazing start, and continues to grow with each day, week, year... Darwin is my first business.

Before ordering, I took a few moments to explore the market, and I absolutely loved the items items that I came across. Fresh imported cheese, olives, jams, sauces, pastas, and so much more. This market is truly a "foodies paradise." I finally made my way to the counter where I placed my order. I was greeted by the owners, who were both extremely kind. I ordered The Catherine, and my daughter chose a fresh salad which was loaded with veggies, fruit & I gorgonzola cheese. The Catherine was such a simple sandwich but absolutely delicious!!! When I asked for a new bill representative of what I paid, the manager came and said they ask for the signature to confirm it was picked up... Then I said, I can indicate that here on the app, and he agreed and let me go with my food. Overall the interaction made me uncomfortable as I've never experienced a similar situation with pickup. However, the cauliflower itself was not cooked fully so not as soft as I wanted it to be. -SYRACUSE POUTINE: The appearance of the poutine was not the best. However, the gravy it came with was very flavorful and tasty. The potatoes themselves were not fried and were in wedge form but went well with the gravy. The small globs of melted cheese on top were a nice complement. -CAJUN SLIDERS: The slider compliments/sauce went well together but the sliders themselves had grill marks on it which gave a bitter bite to those parts of the slider. Additionally, the fried shrimp inside of the slider still had the tail on and so it was a bit of a surprise to bite into a full tail while eating a slider. All in all, a cute spot to see people but food had some hit or miss components.

If you are in downtown Syracuse and are looking for a good lunch spot, PLEASE go to Darwin! It is my favorite and go-to place. I used to work nearby, and would find myself there 3+ times per week. They have at least 3 different soups everyday, so there is bound to be something you like. A bowl of the (delicious, homemade, fresh) soup is only $5 and comes with a delicious piece of Pasta's stretch bread as well! On top of it all, the owners and whole crew are all so friendly and make the experience great. Its also fun to see what the rotating sandwich specials are! A great price, location, and atmosphere. This place was really good. The service was really good and the food was great. The only thing I didn't really care for were their working hours, they are hardly even open, and the place is really small. I also did not see a bathroom, which is weird for a restaurant, but I think they treat it more like a deli. And I really didn't care for how unkept the place is. They really could use a cleaning and perhaps even a renovation. If they would do that, or find a better location, this place would be awesome. And I have to say the prices are not too bad. read more

The best sandwich shop in Downtown Syracuse! and I mean that! Just wish I could get there more like I used to when I worked downtown. Sandwiches were also fresh and made with "real" ingredients. This gem has some of the best sandwiches in syracuse. Very filling and tasty and the best part is you can always get new things, every couple of weeks or so they change up their menu. The only problem with that is one week you could love something the next it could be gone, but no worries, most of the time they will repeat favorites.
