An acquaintance/friend of mine, who apparently most everyone who goes to the local Gym's or listens to "Live Music" knows Peter, who is a lunch waiter a few days and night's a week!!! I invited a dozen people to join me there to support this new venue. Be sure to ask for "Peter, The Rockin' Guitar Player" for your Waiter!!! Darrell's was Bright & Clean to start with, with outdoor & indoor seating with a friendly greeting, by whoever was near the door when you walked in!!! Service was quick, but not rushed and the got right to you as soon as we were seated!!! They smoke a lot of the foods for hours the night before, so you get the aroma of the old southern cooking the second you pull in the parking lot and walk inside. You know that "Smoked Smell" I'm talking about!!! We went there because the Herald Tribune is running a "Best Burger in Sarasota County Contest" and it's the newest restaurant in Venice!!! Four of the folks I invited had Burgers, I had a the Grouper, some ordered Smoked Pulled Pork, BBQ and each meal came with one side order, which was very carefully cooked or prepared to perfection... The meats had the "Best Flavor" and were inviting enough to return and order what the person next to you was savoring!!! The "Only Reasons" I didn't score this new business higher is personal, because I've worked with "Three World Renown Chefs" and expect everything to be perfect!!! This may be one of your "Favorite Restaurants" in "The Greatest Little City in Florida" if you take a trip to "The Brick Yard Plaza" where "Mi Pueblo" has the annual "Cinco De Mayo" gathering!!! The moment we stepped into the restaurant, we were greeted with a cozy and inviting atmosphere that instantly set the tone for a great meal. The aroma of smoky barbecue wafting through the air heightened our anticipation. Opting for the pulled pork sandwiches was an excellent choice. My daughter and I stopped in last night as a final stop on our mother/daughter day. From The moment we walked in until the moment we left we were treated exceptionally well! The staff was attentive and accommodating to my disability (they were so kind). When it came to our food we had to place take home meals for our men so it was a now/later thing and they were on the ball, our food arrived in a fast and efficient manner from the time we ordered to the time I got to the table everything was hot or cold depending upon what it supposed to be and the portions were well I had to take mine home. I only made it through the side salad and my cornbread (which is so good) good thing I people at home to split it with. The food was fresh and attractive looking and it smelled just as good as it tasted. The drinks were iced teas and served in wonderful mason jars big enough that you my need only one. And the wait staff was some of the friendliest that I have had in a long time. A shoutout to Darrell's Restaurant in the Brickyard Plaza. My son and I tried it for lunch recently and it was so good we couldn't wait to take my husband there last night. OMG... The food is like a southern grandma's home cooking. Husband had real fried chicken, collard greens and was over the moon. Our son had country fried steak (again) and said it was fantastic. I had the pork chops and they were phenomenal. When we went for lunch I tried the brisket which was stellar, crispy crust outside, melt in your mouth tender underneath and not all chopped up mixed with fat, nice slices where I could remove the little fat layer - it was very good. Was nice sitting out in the courtyard eating last night, inside was packed (nice sign for off season). The guys were thrilled with the giant mason jars of sweet tea It was also VERY nice seeing the owner walk around and so genuinely happy/appreciative of every customer We will be going back regularly though I hope to eat less next time lolol. read more

2nd generation Venetian, and brought our 3rd with us. Darrell's was awesome from start to finish. Incredible hospitality, captures the Southern Hospitality spirit to perfection, Darrell is the consummate example of a heart of gold owner, knowing you by name and your likes by heart. We had the fried pickles to start, haven't had better anywhere in the south. Order the fried chicken plate with mashed and collards, wonderful, a high recommendation. Also the Hungry Heffer, a combination of pit meats with cucumber salad and Mac and cheese, all wonderful. The sweet tea was great, served in large mason jars and were never empty. The barbecue sauce has hints of raspberry through all types, a nice touch, signature to truly southern eateries. All in all, my new favorite restaurant in Venice, and really close by. WOW!!! I'm so incredibly full because I legit could not stop eating the food! Originally we were going to another restaurant and decided to just pop in here instead and thank god we did. The food is amazing! First and foremost, the restaurant was very clean. They have hand sanitizer at every table. The sauces are all separated and cleaned. All of the staff were wearing their masks, correctly even. Our waitress was very attentive and polite. The appetizers we ordered were large portions and absolutely delicious. All of the sides we had ( 5 different ones) were all equally good and the ribs were awesome! Low fat and very meaty. We ordered desserts and they were very generous sized and tasty! I would highly recommend this place and will eat here again the next time we are back in town. read more

Stumbled in for lunch while working in Venice for a couple of weeks. Small sign lured me in but the friendly greet kept me there. I ordered the daily special of their signatue mac n cheese topped w/the pulled pork with a piece of cake...er, corn bread. All things singly were amazing and together a feast. The pork was delicious even without their sauce. The mac n cheese couldn't have been any more creamy if they tried with great cheese flavor. I love all kinds of cornbread and theirs is some of the best I have ever had. I had the pleasure of meeting Darrell himself. Super nice, passionate guy. I enjoyed the food, atmosphere and the staff. My only regret was not being able to have a meal there again so I could try some of their other offerings. read more

Really good southern cooking - BBQ and other - in a casual and convenient setting. All the meats are good, but I'm partial to the brisket. Get the Hungry Heifer to try everything, or to take home a "doggy" bag (the dog's not getting any of this!). I often get the Andy Dandy, brisket and pulled pork. Last time I did, but added a side of smoked chicken and took some of everything home. I like that you can sort of design your own meal by adding portions of other meats. Lots of very good sides. Desserts are good but we rarely have room. Prices are surprisingly low. Service is great. Has a side room for private parties. Also does catering. read more

As always the food was fantastic. Darrell makes you feel like you are part of his family when dining there, so comfortable. Jeff had the ribs which melted in your mouth and I had the blackened Cat Fish which was delectable. Of course the Mac & Cheese is to die for and the fried Okra. Me & Jeff are getting married Sept 26 on Englewood Beach and it will be catered by Darrell himself. After many months of waiting they have finally reopened in their new location and I can once again enjoy good barbeque close to home! If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Darrell and Lisa, or eating some of the most delicious BBQ ever, then you need to stop in! It is really hard to find restaurants that care this much about their guests. Darrell is the hardest working guy in the business and his efforts really show. The food quality is outstanding! Ribs, brisket, chicken, and pulled pork all have just the right amount of smoke. The fried chicken is perfectly crispy and not at all greasy. Collard greens and Mac n Cheese are second to none. I have eaten here several times since they opened just a couple weeks ago. I have tried many things on the menu and have yet to be let down. They are all about making sure their customers are happy and the food is great. If for some reason there is a problem it is corrected right away. We were there for the first time on a Sunday - noon time. Our friends have been there many times and spoke well of it. Their special was Chicken Pot Pie...we hadn't had it in a long time, so we ordered it. What a disappointment. It was more like a soup with a 'wedge' of pastry crust on the bottom and on the top. Darrell's has the best burger I've ever eaten. I am not big on red meat so I choose when and where I eat it very carefully. Its an absolute treat and a somewhat religious experience. The burger itself is huge, juicy and packed with flavor. Wow, great dinner. We would highly recommend this Restaurant. Great BBQ, we had the sampler platter with a side of Mac n Cheese, no weight watcher meal but so delicious!
