I have been a long time customer of Darby's and would usually give them a 4/5 as the food is good, they have nice staff and a good beer list. However, after today I will no longer frequent Darby's. I was enjoying an early dinner when a young women came in and I overheard her ask an employee if they were hiring. The employee was friendly and went over to their manager and that when things went downhill. This manager was asked if they were hiring and she proceeded to turn away from her employee and in a rude tone said to this employee tell the lady asking for employment to not come on weekends. When asked again if they were hiring the manager responded with the same condescending tone and said louder tell her not to come on weekends. Mind you the young lady and many of the other patrons were close enough to hear what she said. She then proceeded to go back to work, grabbing mugs or something small like that and didn't have the decency to go over 3 feet to ask the girl to kindly come back another day or to even answer her question about employment. The lack of respect this manager showed to her employee, who was obviously trying to deliver good service and be of help to a job seeker, and her lack of respect for the young women is not something I am willing to support. Mind you I understand that Friday nights are busy, however, it was around 5:30 pm the place was slow enough that she could have taken 1 minute to kindly address both these parties. I would strongly encourage the owners to reconsider who they hire to their management team because I doubt many employees will stay around with a manager that acts like that. read more

TERRIBLE! I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN. I usually have had good service, delivery and food from them but NOT today. I know that every restaurant can have a bad day, but this was ridiculous. I ordered my food at 4:05pm. They told me that the delivery guy would be back at 4:30pm. Okay I said, no rush, thinking the food and wine would be at my door around 5-530. Nope. I call at 5:10 (1 hour later) and ask about my order. Im told they're running really late and the guys are out and my food should be there shortly. THEN they call me back at 5:30 and they tell me they're sorry, the food should be there in 1/2 hour the LATEST. They offered to cut the delivery fee in half. I said, okay no problem. At 6:10 still no food! So I call. He said the guy was just leaving at 6:10! When I reminded him that they said "the latest" he goes "oh I thought I said the earliest". So now I'm frustrated, and said okay but if he's not here in 15 minutes forget it. Well 20 minutes go by. NOTHING. So screw it, I leave my house and walk to the store. Get some wine and come home and on my way home I decide to order from Skip the Dishes who IS NEVER LATE and NEVER MESSES UP. I get home at 6:40 and I see the delivery guy there from Darby's. I ignore him because Im hungry and angry and too mad for this. I told them I wasn't going to accept the order past 15 minutes. It had been near 3 hours. I would have had more respect for the lateness if they told me the truth. They screwed up. Obviously they forgot to make my order, then the delivery guy forgot to take it, and then I had to wait until they did all their other deliveries first and make me new food and then come back 3 hours later. Whatever..... never ever again. Just don't lie. Be honest. Say you messed up. Not worth 1/2 delivery fee cut. And I wouldn't want cold old food anyway. read more

Enjoyed our dinner and drinks on the patio. Received good service. The patio, surprising, is not noisy from traffic noise; hence, we could talk. Mind you the tables are quite close, so it doesn't feel too private. read more

I usually love Darby's. It's my local haunt. However, today, I had a bad experience. Our server, Gia, was rude and disrespectful. We were bamboozled and the food was average. Come on, Darby's! We know you can do better! read more

We came here on a monday, hungry and thirsty so the burger & beer special sounded quite appealing. We checked out the menu and decided to stay. No regrets. The beer was included in the regular burger price. I got the Roasted Garlic, Caramelized Onions & Edam burger with the veggie pattie, a side of house salad and a pint of heineken for $12.99!! The food was AMAZING! The burger came on a crispy bread and not on a soft bun that's soggy by the time you're about to finish eating. The veggie patty was great and the toppings very flavourful. The house salad came with sun dried cranberries, star fruit, chick peas & sour cherry vinaigrette. Delicious! It was very filling and left a great taste in my mouth. I also had a bite of the Guacamole & Edam burger. It was good. A little less flavourful than roasted garlic and caramelized onions but makes sense. Probably just should't eat them both at the same time ;) I also tried the cream of tomato soup my friend got. Yum. I love how you get to choose the pattie for your burger cos it gives a vegetarian a lot more options than just the usual "veggie burger" I will definitely come back and try another one!! read more

After about a 5 year or so boycott of this place, I finally returned 3 times during this beautiful hot streak-and don't whine about it being too hot damn it! I love it, appreciate it, because it won't be long till its cold and rainy again. Ok, back to Darby's: Enjoyed the upstairs patio, wonderful in the evening. The girl serving the patio was awesome, very happy, helpful...and pretty damn cute too...that never hurts. She introduced us to their new craft beers, none on tap, but a great selection anyways, instead of the usual mass produced crap. Had a great IPA by Philips from Victoria, and a lager from Comox, I think it was Sugenar. Both very good, but the IPA definitely was the better of the two. The biggest improvement here, though, is the food. I know everywhere says they have the best burger, but I seriously think this place is the best burger, at least best burger for $10 or less. Also, the Fish and Chips are amazing, they use catfish in a light breading instead of beer batter. Tasted delicious....and possibly healthy? Will definitely continue visiting their patio...and perhaps give it a visit on hockey nights. read more

Quick tips: 1) Check their specials of the day for food. The specials are usually the best tasting thing they offer that day 2) They have a roof top patio that should be used if you have the chance 3) Their sides are not included in the meal and are separate (keep this in mind when ordering as they will just ask "would you like fries or salad") Many of my friends moved to Kits years ago since they were going to UBC. The pub many of them frequented was Darby's Pub since it was the closest pub to their places. However, this isn't a bad thing, since it was a standard pub with decent food and brews. Every time I was in town (which would be at least once every 2 months), we would go to Darby's. Over the months and years, you could see Darby's slowly went through changes such as adding a private liquor store, adding more tvs and special event nights. However, even with alternations, Darby's started to show signs of becoming older, but remained a decent pub still. After being away for a couple of years, I moved to Vancouver and walked by Darby's one day when I was in Kits. Since it was around lunch time, I figured it was a good time to go in and check out the place and how it's held up over the years. Darby's has still gone through small changes over the years, with upgrades to the bar, new paint here of there, etc. It still has a bit of a darker, little-bit aging feel, but not something that would be a deal-breaker to most people. The rooftop patio is still intact and fully functional in the summer. Being out in the sun above the street having a view of all the activity below with a brew in hand is still pretty neat to me. When I went in the summer, was alright, but nothing mind-blowing (standard pub food). Since there are a lot of other pubs in Kits and area, it's not something I would go out of my way for. However, I happened to go back in November with a friend that came to town and Darby's is now a place that I will travel a little farther distance to if I want to go to a pub. When I went again in Nov 2011, the menu was completely revamped and we were told a new chef was brought in. The special for the day was a lamb Irish Stew with potato pancakes. Sign me up! The meat was cooked perfectly and the flavours were awesome (especially for $9.50). The portion looked a little small, but after finishing it, it was incredibly filling. My friend enjoyed a burger and my fiance enjoyed a B.L.T sandwich they were serving (both regular items on the menu). Both enjoyed their meals, but I thought mine was the best. :) One thing that detracted me at the end of the meal was when we got our bill, there were extra charges for the fries ordered as sides. Sure enough, all meals you see on the new menu are a little cheaper than other pubs ($9-12) but do not include sides. Add on a side of fries or salad for $3, and you're looking at a $12-15 meal. In my book this is a big no, and reason for a one less star in the rating. Going back another time around Christmas, I had the daily special of a roasted chicken meal and my fiance have a BLT again. Once again, the quality was there (but, I still thought my meal better than my finace's ;) ). I see other Yelpers have complained about the quality going down and Darby's is a dive bar, but I don't share the same opinion. I do agree the size of the portions has gone down, but I think the quality has gone up (or at least certainly the variety has increased with the specials) and I've always left full and content. The waitresses I've had were always friendly and relatively quick with our food orders. However, one or two times, only one waitress was on shift for the entire pub (taking care of about 7-8 tables with people). With that said, the service was a little slower, but it wasn't unbearable or a significant problem. If you're in the area of 4th and MacDonald and if you're looking for a nice little pub, Darby's is one to try. It won't stand out as the best, or worst, pub you've been in. But it will most likely be a positive experience. read more

I went to Darby's a few weeks ago -- it's your run of the mill Vancouver Public House. They have a good selection of beer on tap, and decent specials every day of the week. I went on burger and beer day (Monday) and the burger was good. Points for quality food, beer and service. read more

We late an early lunch here a couple of months ago, and left disappointed. I don't know if they were just having an off day, or if it is always like this. We moved seats because it really smelled of stale beer, but ended up moving to a sticky table. That should have been a sign. Things seemed kind of run down, the ladies room was out of order and the place was empty, except for one other table....except they ended up being the staff. Eating lunch, enjoying a beer, and wandering around basically they seemed really at home, but one of the guys kind of looked homeless with a bit of that grunge thing going on... I ordered a quesadilla type thing, and Mr. B had a poutine, and special that day it was topped with pulled pork. We requested no onions. Our server, a cheerful lass, wasn't sure if my meal could be done without, so she checked with the kitchen - and of course they could hold the onion. Mr. B and I enjoyed our beer. Our meals arrived. Mr. B and his pulled pork topped poutine included a healthy topping of green onions! Oh well, he just picked them off, no big deal. So of course I was a little anxious to get in to my lunch...which was also sprinkled liberally with green onions. (One thing about Mr. B and I - we knew we were soul mates when I looked at him and said "Onions make me gag too!".) So I dig into this wrapped chicken with peppers and cheese, and the melty cheese is just full of onions. It's really hard to pick onions out of melted cheese, and few bites in, I was done. Our cheerful server returned to check on us, I let her know I didn't like my meal, although the heaping pile of onion on the side and 3 bites out of the wrap should have made it clear, but Mr. B was really enjoying his pulled pork poutine (I thought it was pretty awful). I was still hungry, but didn't feel like eating so of course I ordered another beer. The best thing about our visit. Pub food is supposed to be good, dammit! But, it was a few months ago, and I don't see what we ordered on their online menu. So if I ever go back, I'll update. read more

Okay. I'm moving this week and have ordered Darby's delivery twice in the last few days for my friend and I. It's one of the only places that delivers nearby that isn't pizza or sushi and doesn't have a $50 minimum delivery fee (That WowTasty delivery site can suck it, seriously), so it's got that going. First night, we ordered the mac and cheese and a burger. They were out of mac and cheese which is fine - it happens - and we had to go through a ridiculous ordeal with the restaurant and JustEat (again, not totally Darby's fault) to get it switched with a menu item for the exact same price. We ordered the philly cheesesteak without peppers in place of the mac and cheese. I've previously reviewed the cheesesteak and found it to be fairly improved this time, though they prepared it with peppers. Cool. There are a lot of peppers on the menu by the way. Interesting. The burger was charred but okay, and the fries were pretty good. Worth trying again a few nights later to avoid pizza and sushi. That was tonight. We managed to get the mac and cheese (yay!), but it was not very good. Extremely bland, even the ham. Next up was the chorizo tacos, and they were hugely disappointing. The tortillas were basically raw, and the chorizo was fried and completely bland and devoid of spice. If you're going to fry chorizo for a taco, you should definitely indicate that on the menu. It totally changes the flavour and texture of the dish, and we would not have ordered it if we had known. We also got some chocolate mousse. This was a bit of a mistake. The mousse was the best thing we'd had off the menu so far, but we kept tasting these hard little (VERY tiny) beads in the mousse. They were the colour of the mousse, so we assumed they were...what? pieces of hard chocolate?, but then I got a bigger piece and spit it out. It was a big fat piece of plastic. Great. It's textured and likely identifiable as a piece of...something...so if Darby's is interested in finding out what in the heck got into our mousse, I have a photo. We found multiple pieces in the mousse that was still in the to-go container, so we're absolutely certain it wasn't something from our end. I don't want to be a total jerk and post it here, but it is pretty important that they know what happened. So, all in all, most of the food is pretty bland, and I had to bump my rating down a star for the plastic because things like that are really, really hard to overlook. I don't understand how something like that gets into your food unnoticed, but it's extremely unsettling to think that we likely ingested even a small amount of that. Sorry, Darby's. Your liquor delivery service is awesome though. I'm also not exactly sure what happened to my previous review as it appears to now be a duplicate of this one, but it wasn't anything to write home about. Critiques on the cheesesteak which, as I mentioned, has improved, and a two star rating. read more

We finally made it to Darbys this week for the Tuesday night comedy show. $5 to get in and totally worth it. Good show, cheap drink specials and an excellent burger menu. read more

gooood old darby's. when i lived out in kits, this used to be our go-to. it never gets toooo packed (unless it's a wednesday karaoke night), which is awesome for drinks and conversation. i love how they have something going on almost every single night of the week. i believe on tuesdays, they have stand up comedians that perform, wednesday is karaoke night, which is awesome and so much fun, and sunday's are open mic nights - the talent that comes to perform on open mic nights is incredible! they had a night in the past where they set up rock band and people could play, i'm so sad they got rid of that night! the patio is actually surprisingly nice. it's one of the few rooftop patios that exist in vancouver, and even though it is only on the second floor, i really enjoy this patio. it seems to get sun almost all day (or every time i've been at least). it's a great place to go for brunch as well as drinks. overall, this place has a really chill atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks (and the drink specials aren't bad either). read more

I did ordered the calamaris for $13 and the plate had 75% onion rings and only included few calamaris! It probably cost $1.5 to make the dish that was very oily and not even tasty! Worst service I have had since i can remember. Not only did it take forever to order our food it was cold when we got it

Ok, so I decided to take a stroll down to Darby's after looking at the menu. Also, Caesars on a Sunday are a must. I ordered my long awaited Caesar and there was a HAIR in the rimmer. I let it go, it's a meh pub, whatever these things happen. My big mistake was ordering the cumin lime spiced nachos with the works .... Oh gosh. My nachos arrived with 2 banana peppers, maybe 10 black beans, 1 kernel of corn (I am not exaggerating) a sprinkle of cheese, and quite a few green onions. It was a sad, sad plate of nachos. Now having one Caesar I shouldn't have come home to vomit the few nachos I did eat, but it happened. I was so sick!! I even took them home to make my boyfriend taste them and he was not having it. See picture. read more

Darby's is, in most respects, a fairly standard neighbourhood pub. They stand out by having a lovely rooftop patio and perhaps the best beer selection in Kits. They have about 30 taps with a rotating selection of craft beers, including some casks, and they serve proper pints (i.e. not the weird mini-pints common in Vancouver). The inside is a bit generic feeling and has too many TVs for my taste, though fans of sports will likely disagree. While I'm not in love with Darby's, I do find it less obnoxious, and more authentic, than many Kits bars. read more

Hands down one of my top favorites in Kits. I've been here twice and had exceptional service. The beers are great and so are the burgers. The rooftop area is beautiful during the summer for an outdoor meal. All I can say is thank you and, for those who haven't already, stop on by! read more

Darby's is your ideal, laid-back and casual pub (that has a rocking roof top patio in the summer). Awesome local beer selection on tap, delicious hand-cut fries - and top it off - free WIFI while you're hanging out there. Service is alright - they'll leave you alone and allow you to work. Not overly impressive, but enough to satisfy and keep me coming back for more. read more

FINALLY stopped in here after all these years. I was extremely impressed! The staff were all super friendly. I ordered the Mountain Burger and was not disappointed. Can I choose zero stars as a rating? Place is only intended for beer crowd. The eggs Benny is great if you like hard boiled eggs. The fish tacos breading was too crispy. Great Patio, however terrible food at a rather high price for what you get. My husband and I went this summer and ordered some type of fish dinner. REALLY gross. Oh Darby's.....such a fantastic range of great beers and yet the ambience in this place sucks unless you can score a seat on the upstairs patio! The bar has a gazillion TVs all on sports channels and played full blast most of the time, or else terrible 80s/90s rock music blasted equally loud. Even the food has gone way downhill.
