I was completely unsure of this place when I walked in - looked like a dive bar which had been vacuumed a couple times. Then I got a chance to peak at the menu, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised. They have a great selection of the usual pub fare, but also has steak, fondue, several interesting sandwich varieties. I had the shaved steak which was a great variation on Roast Beef Au Jus but add some cheese and some great bbq sauce and we've got a serious contender. They even substituted steamed veggies instead of Salad on my request...and only for a $1.00! the music was all over the place - punk rock , oasis, and Red Hot Chili Peppers..the service was pretty quick and friendly even though lightly staffed. During the evenings they have comedy and karoake mixed with some live music nights....I would definitely go back and check out the rooftop patio deal... solid meal and experience. only comment - no free refills on soft drinks, not great, but not a deal breaker. read more

Mediocre food at best. Small portions. Chicken terriaki bowl is one chicken thigh on a bit of rice served on a small plate ($15!) A pint of domestic beer with tax is $7.75 almost $9 if you want an import. Service is OK, not great. The Bimini down the street is much better value. Better atmosphere, food , $3 beers ! Pool and pinball. read more

I've come to Darby's Pub twice with my fiance in the past few months. I noticed a few reviews mention that it's a dive pub, but that is definitely not the case. It has a nice casual vibe to it, with plenty of booths and tables, and TV's in every corner. Two sides of the pub are all windows, which makes it really bright during the day. The waitresses we've had both times were very friendly and quick with both drink and food orders. The second time we went, one waitress was stuck with eight tables, and we still got great service. That's very impressive in my opinion. When it comes to food, all of the sandwiches and burgers are $10 or less. Note that the price does not include sides. It costs $2.99 to add fries or a side salad, or $3.99 to add a side caesar salad. Even with that, the food cost is reasonable compared to many other restaurants in the area. I ordered the BLTP sandwich, which comes on a super fresh and soft bun. The bacon was nice and crispy, and the side salad was fresh and tasty. My fiance ordered the chicken club sandwich, and it was equally delicious. I wish I had ordered fries, because they were spiced with pepper and were cooked to perfection. I've heard there is karaoke here on Wednesday nights, so I may have to check that out one day. read more

Along with Alibi Room and The Magnet, Darby's Kits has one of the best beer lists in the city. It's really the only option for a thorough beer list in Kits. They always have Twin Sails, Superflux, and Boombox on tap. The food is subpar, so my wife and I often eat elsewhere after a few drinks. Thankful that this is my local, and that I have been coming here for over ten years! Pro tip: start their beer passport for added fun :-) read more

VEGGIE BURGER!!! I needed to write that first, as that's the primary focus of this review. But I should start off by saying ...there's a lot of great things about this place - lots of beer options, wine is relatively inexpensive yet good, and there is a huge patio great for people watching (a couple women wearing interesting and bright coloured tights at that street corner - that part of Kits is full of American Apparel supporters it seems!)...But I digress... So... as I only subtly alluded to above, the best thing about this place (and it's strange to write this regarding a pub)... is their VEGGIE BURGER! Seriously - homemade, very flavourful (I got the one with teriyaki and pineapple) and is made out of quinoa!!! Never had one like it, and hugely recommend trying it. Go Darby's Go! read more

The items on the menu here confuse me a little. There's some classic pub grub (like fish and chips, burgers, etc) but a lot of the menu seems like the place is trying to be something its not: a Main St. food-joint. I say that because it's a very ecclectic mix of things (quinoa salad, pulled pork sandwhich, duck confit, pasta, etc) along side all the classic pub grub. But ok, they're trying to stand out and offer variety, sure. However, if you can't get the most basic of pub foods right then you shouldn't be doing food period. I've been here a couple of times to try the interesting menu items and both times left severely dissatisfied. The first time, I tried the fish and chips and sadly, it was the second-worst fish and chips I have ever had (second only to the time I received Captain Highliner boxed fish and chips in a restaurant). I ordered the two piece because I was pretty hungry but when it arrived the pieces of fish were about half the size of my palm and the batter was soft and mushy. Not appetizing in the slightest, and for $13.95 a complete let down portion wise. But it didn't end there, the fries where tossed in a pepper-corn based steak-rub mix (unlike the occasional barbeque spice mix seen on fries) which was large chunks of spices, pepper-corns and coarse sea-salt and tasted horrible. That type of mix is meant to be *cooked* on *meat* not tossed uncooked on fries. The coleslaw was sour and tasted purely of onion. The second misadventure in food here was the roast vegetable pasta which was a very strange amalgamation of a bunch of different ways of doing pasta rolled into one. It was advertised as a different type of pasta (I can't remember what) but came out as radiatori, which was over-cooked. It was supposed to be a tomato basil sauce with bocconcini and roasted vegetables topped with parmesan, a balsamic reduction and basil. I got all of that only instead of basil they substituted green onion, not really a suitable alternative. The sauce was alright but the addition of the balsamic reduction was far too sweet and in combination with the two different cheeses (which I found a little redundant) was not very palatable. Also, again, for $9.95 the portion was a bit too small. On a side note, the man at the table next to me ordered the mac'n'cheese as a side to his burger (which is a $6.95 add on if I'm to understand the menu correctly) and it was huge. It could have been a meal unto itself, which he voiced very loudly and I have to agree with. It was easily double the portion of my roast vegetable pasta. All in all, it might be a decent place for a drink but give the food here a miss. Whoever is in the kitchen needs to focus on doing the basics right before trying to offer variety. read more

Recently visited here for the second time. Just stopped in for a quick bite on a Wednesday around 6:30pm. It was during the senators game and the place was quite busy, but the service was attentive and the food came quickly. I ordered the veggie burger which was good-tasting but difficult to keep together (The patty kept crumbling apart) but I suppose this is characteristic of veggie burgers. The ambience was lively, which likely can be credited to the hockey fans watching the game. The only negative portion of the visit was our server herself. She was condescending without cause. I know serving is not an easy job whatsoever but I felt as though we were a very laid-back table with few requests and her attitude was unrequited. She was also wearing a croptop and jeans, and while I think its great that server's are allowed to dress casually and not required to wear skyhigh heels and fancy dresses- the fact that you could see her whole stomach was a little offputting while eating. Unfortunate that visit was tainted by one rude server, but will try a different kits joint for my next trip. Kudos to kitchen staff for feeding hungry playoff watchers efficiently. read more

I am also in customer service so I understand what's it's like to be serving people, I'm not some high demand bit*ch that needs attention. But I have to say, this is something I have never experienced in my life. I live just down the street from Darby's and my boyfriend and I go there all the time especially in the summer time. Last Saturday, on June 6th at around 7-8pm, I took my girlfriend there for a drink and my boyfriend later on joined us. When we asked for the bill, our server gave us our separate bill in which I clearly said, it is all together. So bill came up to I can't remember exactly what but around 40/50 ish. I gave him an extra almost $20 of tips in which is wayyyyyyy over than What I should be paying for his service. Not to mention the fact that my guy had to order his drink 5 times from 5 different people and it took forever to come. But that's fine, it was busy, I get it. So when we were about to leave, my gf goes oh, I didn't pay for mine yet. So I said, well I asked for the whole thing! Why would he separate it? Her bill was $21.57 so I ended up putting another $20 on the table because it was MY treat and we left. Next thing you know, buddy comes chasing us outside screaming demanding for his f*ucking $1.57 so I asked him again how much everything was and he even clarified the fact that I tipped him $20 something. So I was like o....k.....? And he goes well, you need to pay for this one! You still owe me $1.57. I was so fkn embarassed for him that I ended up giving him another $10! Please, tell me.. Is this right?....why did I have to pay him $30 of tips for a $50 meal? I still love Darby's on the liquor store side, cause every one is friendly and nice. But that server? He needs to go! I can't believe how someone can think that they have a right to demand for tips especially with such shit*ty service!!!!!!! read more

Place is OK - came mainly bc all other nearby places were not open yet and we really wanted one last putin. The place down the street really known for it's P was closed so we ended up here for a drink and some putin. Putin was very average compared to the 3-4 I'd had around the city throughout my stay. Nice enough service and ambiance though. read more

Dude, I've had some good times here. Aside from a tragic camera dropping incident, my time spent here has been highly memorable, goofy, and fun. So many happy hyper people and if you're in the mood for that, it's a great place to be. We split appies that tasted great and our group pretty much dominated the rock band karaoke. That was awesome. I suck at rock band, but I love watching people release their pent up inner rockstars. Clearly I don't have one. The crowd can be a bit on the young side (we are in UBC land, remember) but if you bring enough of your friends you won't have to feel so old... if you are old... um.. Good times. read more

This is a random, super-casual pub whose atmosphere makes you feel like you're in Britain (at least if you come during the colder months and therefore sit inside, and participate in trivia night, as I did). Our server was very friendly and already knew which menu items were gluten-free or not from previous experience. Definitely a plus in my books. I had the roasted beet salad with goat cheese. It was tasty but nothing amazing. I give it creativity points because it's not a very common menu item, particularly at a pub. My friend's meals (more traditional sandwiches/burgers and fries; macaroni & cheese) looked decent too. Overall not a dinner destination but a good place for a casual drink with a group, particularly if you want entertainment in the form of trivia or karaoke. read more

Okay, I've gotta admit. This place is pretty great. They are featuring a lot of good craft beers on their menu, and the food is looking pretty awesome. Things have changed around a lot here. The prices for drinks were good, too. And they actually have drink specials. On weekends!! I know, right? Weird. The nachos are good. Salty, but good. Especially with pulled pork. Had the best server ever on Saturday for a friend's birthday. He was on top of everything. Fast, efficient, funny, and friendly. And for a big, big group. Nice job, buddy. I don't know the name of the band that was playing, but they did a variety of cover songs, and they were pretty damned awesome. However, they were also very loud. Incredibly hard to talk to the person next to you when the band was playing. So please, Darby's, turn it down a notch. The speakers don't need to go to 11. In general, the music in between sets was also loud, so that I could talk to the person next to me if shouting, but not anyone else at the table. I left with a sore throat and strained ears. See you again, Darby's. You have swayed me. Just turn down the music, please. read more

One rainy Thursday my friend was in town visiting, and since she's a big fan of trivia we decided to head to Darby's as it was the only Thursday trivia place we could find. The trivia started at 7, so we turned up at around 6.15 hoping this would give us ample time to beat the rush and find ourselves a seat. We arrived to find a pub that fortunately still had plenty of tables free. The unfortunate thing was that all of the tables had a dreaded "RESERVED" sign on them. Seeing a couple of people getting up to leave, the waitress apologised and said that we couldn't sit in the newly freed seats as they were also reserved. Finding nowhere to sit, my friend and I simply left in angry moods, neither of us wanting to look like idiots standing in the middle of the room while half of the pub was filled with empty seats. To me this wasn't a pleasant experience, especially since I travelled across the city to go there. I can only blame Darby's for this for having a crazy reservation policy and not having the plans in place to run a quiz night for all of the people that want to compete, even if they turn up early. read more

**Good collection of beer/ spirits, good patio** Went here as for drinks after having some good food at the neighboring Raviolino's. We were quite full so we directly moved on to the drinks menu. First thing that hit me is that these guys have a pretty good collection of beers and spirits. 4 of us ordered the white Sangria, that came in a jug, while some of us opted for IPAs. The Sangria was disappointing, it was mostly pop, and had very little alcohol content. I could myself had gone through a whole jug of that, while effortlessly tightrope-ing across the Grand Canyon, and I am not even Irish. :) My friend tried the Hearthstone Wyld Weisse Raspberry (cloudy, sour beer with low ABV and a flavor of raspberries) from the beer collection, and she really liked it. If you like the flavor of raspberries, I guess this is your poison! Last but not least, they have an excellent patio! Some say one of the best patios in Vancouver! read more

Fairly standard pub fare. Apparently one of their managers is allergic to nuts so its a bonus treat for those concerned about allergies. Their wings -especially the salt and pepper wings- were good. They have trivia every Thursday. No entry fee and teams are limited to 6 people. I noticed that their sides of fries are priced separately from their burgers and sandwiches. read more

Those who know me know I don't usually enjoy pub food and that sort of thing. My friends suggested coming here and since I was at Kit's beach already, I figured it was close enough for a bite, I could suck it up for one day and eat bar food. Looked kinda divey inside, I wasn't helped at the door but I found out I was supposed to walk up the stairs to the rooftop deck. Ohhh! Good sized patio, the sun was out, we got a pitcher of beer, I was happy. Apparently this place is famous for their hamburger and were they damn good. Served on a toasted ciabatta bun, the meat was ground fresh and served medium rare. I was very impressed. The other food was meh. We had the potato chip nachos. Holy heart attack on a plate. The mussels were fishy, the pork steak bites were your typical bar style food. I'd go back for the burger. They had quite a few varieties. When we left there was someone collecting cover by the door. The comedy night starts at 9:30. Didn't look like it would be busy? read more

Fair for pub food. Great beer and wine place attached if you are in need of supplies. Believe they have a decent selection although it is of course more expensive. Was expecting better comedy on comedy night. Was a bit disappointing. read more

This Kits location is not a place I'd recommend (at all) to go for food. I ended up eating here once because our restaurant of choice in the neighbourhood was closed that night for a private function. We thought we'd check out Darby's and found it dim, kinda creepy and grungy. And the food was overdressed with lots of sauce from a plastic tub (at least that's how it tasted). But in the summer it has a wicked patio on the top of the building. It's within walking distance of Kits Beach, so something to keep in mind when the sun shines! read more

Came here for dinner a couple weeks back. This is a place I used to frequently drink a lot at but now that i'm a little more grown up I decided to come here to eat a meal and not get stupid drunk. We decided to sit on the patio since it was getting cold out pretty quickly and the sun was still out long enough for us to eat a meal out there. I decided on the Fried Chicken Sandwich and fries. I asked for no tomato but it came with tomato. Not a huge deal but its nice when it's actually remembered. Anyways the sandwich was super good it was crispy, flavourful and the chicken wasn't dry. Fries on the other hand were pretty standard to me. We also ended up getting a bowl of their Split Pea & Ham soup (This was their daily soup special that day). Super thick (Maybe just a touch too think for my liking) but it was tasty and pretty comforting seeing how it was getting really cold that night and the hot soup warmed us right up. read more

Poor choice if you're hungry. Only choice for a patio in this neighborhood. Typical drinks, but known by locals as the last resort for food in the area. Only recommend during sunny days when rooftop patio is open. read more

MMM!! The brunch at Darby's is AMAAAZZZING. It's your typical eggs, toast etc. but so much better than anywhere else. Massive sausages, maple bacon, grain toast, free range eggs. SO GOOD. I enjoy popping down here for a drink sometimes also. It's a titch pricey for me to become a regular, but I'll still visit every couple of months. read more

This is a bit controversial, but I'm going to declare the Best Burger in Vancouver. This is a completely personal opinion and I know everyone has their own feelings about their favourite burger....well mine is at Darby's. Everything is perfect...the awesome fresh bread from Cobs on 4th, the delicious burger, not over cooked, excellent quality meat, super juicy in the middle and the yam fries, or crispy greens or regular fries or whatever you want. The beer is a reasonable price, it's my local and I love it. read more

This is the only place in Kits that I know of that serves real 20 oz pints of good beer at a decent price. And I will keep coming back for that reason alone. Food is a hit or miss here. I've had the Spicy Bacon Burger, Veggie burger and poutine and thought they were all great, but some other items were just average or portioned way too small for the price. But overall this is a great place to go if you're looking to watch a game and enjoy some excellent beers. read more

An awesome neighbourhood go-to spot! I frequent Darby's for birthdays, sunset cocktails on the rooftop patio, or just some good old pub food. Their beer selection is huge and changes fairly often which makes for a great opportunity to try new things. The food is always pretty good (wings, tacos, sandwiches, etc.), haven't had a bad plate yet. Plus, you can't go wrong with a giant mason jar full of sangria! The other thing I love about this place: male and female servers! It feels like the only place in the neighbourhood that doesn't just hire "pretty girls" to serve - nice change of pace. The only hung I don't love is how loud they have the music some times, I like to be able to talk to my friends while we're here and it's tough to do that without yelling at times. Overall, I highly recommended this place if you're looking for a laid back atmosphere or a sweet rooftop patio. read more

My friend and I came here after dinner to grab a quick drink. They have a decent selection of beers on tap, and a decent dining menu. We both wanted shots, but yes, we were THOSE girls... Y'know, the ones who are terribly indecisive and don't know much about shots except, "not too sweet." The bartender was kind and accommodating regardless, and gave us options as to what she thought we might enjoy. The Bailey's and coffee bread pudding and the toffee pudding that we ordered took a little longer than I expected, but both were delicious and were just what diabetics fear. The bread pudding was surprisingly light compared to what I expected and the alcohol wasn't overpowering. Toffee pudding was much heavier in comparison. I love that they have hooks under the bar for girls to hang their purses, and for a bar, they have very clean bathrooms. Darby's, I applaud you. **We did come earlier in the night, so unsure how it changes when it gets packed later or during a game** read more

We had seen this place pop up on more than one "Best Patio in Vancouver" list over the summer, so one day while strolling up 4th street in Kits we decided to pop in. Pretty good craft beer list, but nothing really popped out at me as a must try. It was a very hot sunny day, so we went for the more lighter and fruity. I had a Kama Citra Session IPA from Off the Rail while my partner started with Bomber Brewing's Park Life Passion Fruit Ale. Both great choices, the Kama Citra was not overly hoppy and was nice and light and the Park Life a great summery fruit Ale. Oh, and the choice of 12 Oz or 20 Oz glass is great! We generally love to sample more than a few brews when we're dining out, so choosing the smaller glass means having a few tastes while not getting too day drunk. For my meal I chose the Smoken' Chicken Enchilada w/ house salad. This is a Chef's special I believe and might only be available the month of August. The enchilada's came piping hot and the smokey flavour was a unique twist on your traditional enchilada. It was listed as having a spicy serrano chili sauce, but the heat was pretty mild. The salad was OK, maybe a little bland and overall the portion of the meal could have been a bit larger. My partner went with the Mediterranean Flatbread, from the smaller plates portion of the menu. She said it tasted more Mexican than Mediterranean due mainly to the spicy tomato sauce which she said was quite hot. She likes the spice while I shy away from it, by the way. She also said the portion was pretty good for her, but others might think it to be pretty small (it didn't look like much to me). Also, more veggies on it would have been good. Our second round of drinks saw her go with the Yellow Dog Apricot Saison while I chose the Driftwood Brewing Whitebark, which the waitress told me taste like Kronenbourg Blanc, except better. I think I might agree with her. The Apricot Saison was another great summer drink with a fruity aroma and a slightly dry finish. I'd say the best part of this place is indeed the patio. We sat directly by the entrance and I never got up to explore how big it is, but I believe a sizeable amount of people can sit up there. A good mix of shade and sun, though our seat's were complete sun and we found ourselves sweating up a storm towards the end of our meal - but always great to soak it up while it's around when living in Vancouver, I say. Comfortable wood seats/benches make up the patio, while rows of planter boxes with tall grass surround the patio and give it a feeling of privacy while removing you from the busy feel of West 4th and McDonald. I would have given it a higher rating if I hadn't left still hungry though. Will definitely return again for beer or two... read more

Darby's Pub is a pleasant surprise. You can order flights of 5 oz beers for $2 per glass, which is great if you want to sample a bunch of beers but you have to drive home. And they have a good assortment of beers from throughout British Columbia. The atmosphere is lively and the food is somewhat more elevated than your typical pub. They serve duck wings and they are delicious. Come on Tuesdays at 8PM for pub trivia. read more

Not terribly impressed with the inside of this place. Someone else said the word "grungy" and I would have to agree. Since this isn't 1992 any more, that's no longer a compliment, especially for an eating establishment. I've met a group here twice, and both times no trouble seating us all together. The service is alright, but drink refills can take a while. The location is ok, a little bit away from the busiest blocks of Kits, but still within walking distance of the beach. I haven't been to enjoy the patio, and that just might be Darby's saving grace. I'll have to think about it for next summer. read more

This is a neighbourhood favourite. We frequently stop in for burgers and beers. They have an excellent selection of craft brews on tap to choose from - always something fun to try! I'm pulled in two directions writing this review. I want to like Darby's because they kindly hosted a fund-raiser a friend and I organized awhile back. But even in light of this charity I just can't give it more than two stars. We sold tickets to an ol' burger and brew shindig, but most of our guests were served cold food, the waitress couldn't take the stress of a large group, and many of the bar's promises fell through. The worst of it, I'm even keeping under wraps because I can only surmise about what happened. The crowd here can get rowdy. While a friend and I once waited for a bus a guy from the bar chased another guy and knocked him to the ground just a few feet from us. Once the puncher left, the punchee was super angry and started running down the street vandalizing window boxes. Like I said, a rowdy crowd. There have been long-promised renovations of the bar that would certainly improve the rather cruddy appearance. I'll say it flat out: it's on my boycott list. read more

Ive been coming to Darby's on and off for years now. The huge draw card for this place is the roof top patio. Also, the food is pretty good for a "local". Our most recent visit was only let down by the service. They had about 4 servers working was is a relatively small patio. However it took several minutes to get food or drink service. We had to ask twice to order food. That being said when the food arrived it was good and the beer was cold and there was a lot of variety. read more

Karaoke night at Darby's pub was a lot of fun. The pub was not crowded at 7pm when I got there. I ordered the vegetarian burger with fries. To be quite honest, I hadn't expected much since it's a pub, but it was actually very good. The patty was crusty and I guess beans. Either way, it was excellent. I also enjoyed the sticky toffee which had actual whole chocolate chips inside. The pub is cozy and decorated in dark tones giving the pub a very intimate feeling, There is also a patio on the top floor which I believe is open during the summer and very nice. I have never been there during the summer, but I have heard that it is very agreeable on the patio. The best part was still the karaoke. It started right at 9pm and it was very well organized. Even at that point, the pub wasn't too crowded. I also discovered that some of my friends are actually really good singers. Overall, I had a lot of time and I will definitely go back if my friends organized another karaoke night. read more

I came in with a friend late late evening and the place was nearly empty. We sat at the bar and yet service wasn't all that great. We had a couple and moved on. My friend, who's a regular says that they're usually much better and the bartender must have been burnt out from the crowds earlier in the day (it was a tap takeover). The tap list (32 taps) is enough to give this a high rating, but I just can't give it a 5 given the service. read more

The beer selection was decent and the food didn't take too long to come out. The part that ruined our visit for us was that our server seemed to either have been A) inexperienced or B) too busy entertaining other tables. We came and sat down and it took about 10 minutes before we were given menus and got our drink orders taken. Then after when we were finished eating and our glasses were empty, our plates and cups were taken but no offer for another drink or even the bill. So we were left sitting there staring at eachother until we were able to flag down someone else to pay our bill. This will be a last resort kind of place for me I think for the future. read more

Awful would be a compliment. We tried to order drinks but the bartender with the blonde beard, and the dark-haired waitress with the baseball hat were rude and dismissive toward us.
