I stopped in for a afternoon dinner after a long hard day of shopping. I got off my feet by sitting in one of the tables nested inside of the floor. I found them preferable to an actual table, extremely comfortable. The menu has all of your regular Thai cuisine. I ordered Tom Yum Soup which had a different flavor than I am used to, more sour. The shrimp in the soup was a good quality and actually de-veined, unlike many Thai restaurants. I had the shrimp in blankets which I wasn't crazy about (the deep fried shrimp quality was not on par) but I did enjoy the accompanying sauce. I had one of their peanut chicken curries. It was good, but not exceptional. The potatoes were very soft but didn't retain any of the flavor of the curry which was disappointing. The service was fantastic, my water was always full and the food was served politely and quickly. The dishes all came out hot and at a perfect pace. I would recommend this restaurant if you're in the area already and you'd like some reasonably priced Thai food and funky ambiance. read more

Overall, i'd rather do take out or delivery than eat at the restaurant. food was okay but the space felt unhygienic. first impression when walked in was "eww". it had weird humid smell. carpet and cushion for sitting looked bit old and disgusting. service: good. we had no issue with waiter or the host. however, water tasted weird like a combination of soap and saltiness? i usually drink multiple cups of water at one sitting but only had sips in between. food: we ordered pad see ew (with chicken) and green curry (with beef). My favorite part: tables built into the floor so that you swing your feet in and sit inside a box-like area. Not so favorite part: the curry made with peanut butter. It was so thick and peanut butter-y that I had to take it home because it was so heavy! We ordered brown rice to go with the curry and I don't think they charged extra for brown vs. white rice which was a plus. My friend ordered the won ton noodle soup and loved it though. This place is our favorite Thai restaurant, parking may be tricky and if you can take it to go, that's a good option as well. Our favorites are pad Thai chicken, beef pad see ewe, tom yum soup with chicken and Green curry with chicken. The servings are generous and they are very quick with having your tasty order ready for you. I also enjoy sprinkling their hot sauce on all of my food, it's a nice blend of hot and tanginess for some of the sweeter dishes. Before heading back to I-94, we stop by Garrett's popcorn (Right around the block) for a medium blend (cheese and caramel). My fingers are nice and orangey when we get home, perfect timing for Thai food from Dao's. :) read more

What's up with all the bad reviews? I thought the food was pretty damn tasty. I will say that I did not sit and eat here though. My family and I ordered to go and ate at our hotel. We order potstickers, tom yum soup, beef pad see ewe, chicken fried rice, chicken satay, and papaya salad. I love everything and the portions were really good. We had leftovers. It all tasted authentic and I went in for seconds and thirds. They correctly packed up everything we ordered and provided everything that we would need: a variety of sauces, plates, utensils, etc. That helped out a lot when we had a young baby who needed constant attention. There could be no room for error. :P I think people should really try this place again. If the service is the problem, order the food to go and your problem is solved. Dao is my absolute FAVORITE Thai restaurant in Chicago! I started working downtown on Michigan ave and a coworker introduced me to the almost hidden location. My go to meal is the basil fried rice. Basic I know but just soooooo good every time. I add different protein each time and it was always comes out perfect. The last time I went was with a good friend of mine. Since we both think of ourselves as foodies, we ordered a TON of food. I would recommend: Dao Platter for an appetizer sampler! Probably enough for 3 or 4 people or 2 if you love food lol. I know the 2-stars make me seem ungrateful for my free lunch, but I love Thai food, and this place failed to satisy. While ordering from Dao at lunch today from work was a nice change of pace from the usual places they go - CPK, Gran Luxe, Cheesecake, etc., I was quite disappointed in it overall. I ordered the papaya salad - no shrimp, and the red curry - no chicken, but with extra vegetables. The papaya salad was actually decent - it was fresh and had enough spice in it for the perfect amount of heat. While the red curry was full of veggies, which made me very happy, when I took my first bite it lacked ANY kind of seasoning or spices that even somewhat hinted that I was eating red curry. I could only eat a few bites because it was so bland. Yes, I like things spicy, but this wasn't just a matter of it missing heat, it was just plain flavorless. I'm not sure how everyone else's dish turned out, but maybe I'd give Dao one more chance with a noodle dish. I would only order again from here if work was buying lunch again though. read more

It might not be the BEST Thai food you can get, but it's an excellent option in the area: cheap, tasty food with good service and booze. This is a long review but in short, DO NOT GO HERE PLEASE. SPEND YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE! The other one star reviews here are truly correct . Please go to Star of Siam (a couple of blocks away) versus this place. Basically, my girlfriend and I went to this Thai place on a Friday night and there was only 6-7 people there (already a bad sign when there's around 30 empty tables there). Their menu was very conscious of which items contained peanuts as it was highlighted in bold red. All items listed the ingredients inside so we felt okay ordering the Vietnamese fresh spring roll. My girlfriend is allergic to carrots and when the spring rolls arrived, there were carrots inside. We politely apologized to the waitress and asked if they can remove the carrots since we can't eat them. Keep in mind we would have asked to have the carrots excluded if the menu stated that carrots were in there, but the menu did not state that carrots were inside. We double checked the menu in case we made a mistake, but sure enough, the menu did not list carrots for the spring roll item even though other items listed carrots in those. The male manager came by and was very rude to us while asking what we want to order differently. I was very apologetic to him as I already felt bad for having them take away the spring rolls but all I asked was if they can remove them. The manager was very rude as he explained that if "I just looked carefully at the menu" I would not have made that mistake. He said that we sometimes put carrots as a decorative piece on items but the spring rolls had carrots inside. He was extremely impolite and became frustrated. I said we do not what to order anything new and he grabbed the menu out of my hand and rushed away, eyeing me as he went into the kitchen. Once we got the check, he charged us for the item we never ate. I requested to have it taken off and they begrudgingly did so. When I was walking away I spoke with the female waitress and another server and they apologized for how I was treated. They said it was their fault. But the male manager didn't show has face, and was hiding in the kitchen. I told them I wanted to support local businesses like theirs but it's hard to do so when you're treated like that. That manager does not have the luxury of treating customers like that when his restaurant is only at 1/8 capacity in a Friday night!!! To even drive home the point further of why not to come here, I later realized that they only gave me one shrimp wonton for my noodle soup when others (based on recent pictures of other customers' orders) got two. That manager purposely took off one topping since I apparently angered him when it was his fault in the first place. Please everyone reading this, please do not go here. I really feel bad for the other staff, but this manager has no clue what he's doing and has to get his anger problems looked at by a therapist. Go to Star of Siam instead!!!! read more

i don't even know where to begin. don't order an entree with tofu- it won't come with any other vegetables, only undercooked tofu. the Singapore noodles were soggy. they brought us dirty plates, brought us the wrong order (basil fried tofu instead of basil fried rice) and got visibly upset and defensive when we corrected them. tables were dirty. boba was undercooked. everything was under seasoned- bland, bland, bland even at their highest spice level. we had to ask three times for hot sauce. there was a service charge on our (already overpriced) tab that wasn't disclosed at the beginning. there are plenty of other good restaurants within the block, or maybe you could eat at home- literally anything else would result in a better experience. read more

"Undecided" would be my vote. Dao Thai is extremely affordable. Surprisingly so for the area and it's never crowded except maybe during lunches. Not spectacular but barely makes it as a standby either. It could be so much better than it is. Several people mentioned the restaurant is beautiful and that is certainly true. But the menu and its execution leave a lot to be desired. The egg rolls are boring. Beef items should be avoided, especially the spicy beef skewer appetizer. Chicken pad Thai is overly bland. I hear the soups are very good and thus may be their specialty. But I'm not a soup person so I may be stuck with mediocre here, and therefore looking for an alternative elsewhere. But the food settles well so I'll give it another few tries. It's walkable from AMC River East if you just saw a movie, but it's not open late. 10pm is the cutoff. It is however a huge space especially if you include the garden area. And they have a wheelchair lift. I have seen groups of people very happy here so you may like it more than I did. read more

Dao is a pretty decent Thai place here in Streeterville. Having grown up in Skokie/Evanston with the awesome Ruby of Siam, my expectations for Thai food are pretty high. This restaurant somewhat makes the mark. The atmosphere here is great, with an authentic sit-down-on-floor type area. I tend to get the take-out here. Today's order for the Pad Khee Mao took much longer than expected and tasted alright. The vegetables could be fresher/more flavorful. I think their other dishes are better (such as Pad Thai). We came here today (Christmas) after the nearby BBQ joint told us it would be 1 hour and 45 min wait. There was no wait which was nice, and the seating was unique and cute. I ordered the pad thai with shrimp and it was too sweet for my liking, plus they didn't ask for my preferred spice level so I asked for their hot chili sauce. The shrimp wasn't good and the tofu was just okay. However, the cream cheese wontons were delicious! Piping hot and crunchy. Dao Thai is on Ohio street and not far from Michigan Avenue. When you enter the restaurant, the middle section looks like the seating is for those that wish to sit cross-legged on a mat. It is an optical illusion because you can actually sit at each table and let your feet dangle below. We opted for a regular table and chairs and were promptly greeted. I had the red curry with chicken and the others at my table had the cashew chicken and another curry dish. You have to order the rice separately and it is not included with the entrees. My curry dish was decent yet it was not very hot. The portions are good for the price ($10-14). I have just had better Thai food in other restaurants and can therefore not rate this among the best. I order this at every Thai place I visit. This is by far one of the better ones I've tried. For my main meal, I ordered the drunken noodles. It wasn't on the menu, and usually when it's on the menu it's listed as something different and varies per restaurant. That was also very delicious and a huge portion for what you're paying for. Ordered the spring rolls and chicken pad Thai. Spring rolls were awful. The wrap smelled like it was just removed from a wrapper and the rolls were covered in this weird honey hoisin sauce that was way too sweet and overpowered the albeit bland attempt at the spring roll itself. The pad thai was terrible. Nothing was tossed together. The chicken was pan fried by itself with no seasoning or sauce before being placed on the plate w the pad Thai. The noodles were spaghetti noodles that had been broken two or three times. Just overall very bland and not at all a pad Thai dish. You'd be better off microwaving one of the boxes from the grocery store Two stars because decor is kind of fun and service was fast. If you've never had Thai food before you might not agree with this review but I hope you try someplace else in the future. read more

I've been here a few times now, not because it's the best Thai place, but because it's dirt cheap, great service, and you can always get seated. It' pretty standard Thai food. On my most recent outing I got the Pad Num Prik Pao (Chicken Supreme) and my friend got the Pad See Eiw. Both were good, but nothing to write home about. Fairly average I'd say. I almost didn't go to this restaurant because it only had 3 stars, and since I'm rarely in Chicago, I only wanted to go to 4-5 star reviewed places. But I had such a strong hankering for Thai that I changed my mind last second while on my way to another restaurant and decided to stop here! I'm so glad I did! My girlfriends and I ordered the mini veggie spring rolls which were delicious. The plum sauce that came on the side wasn't that good, but hey they had sriracha, so we were saved :-) I ordered the Chicken Pad Ped with white rice for just $8.75! I made the mistake of ordering it medium plus - I needed a fire hydrant for my tongue later! The gravy was nice and coconut creamy with tons of bamboo shoots which I love and the dish was super meaty, which I also love! Their crab rangoon was wonderfully overstuffed with a really nice crispy deep fried shell. The service was a little slow but it was a lazy sunday afternoon so they only had one server trying to handle 5-6 tables. But they did turn the AC up when asked instead of ignoring us like some places may lol. So i guess it all evens out :-) I would definitely recommend this place to Thai lovers in the Chi. read more

In summary, meh food, good customer service. Catering -- 5/5 First, Dao Thai is an excellent choice for catering! I organized an event nearby and cannot recommend Dao enough for their helpfulness and generosity. I called them with a budget and number of people I wanted to feed, and we were able to work out a deal that could suit my needs. I spoke to the owner directly, who remained patient, courteous, and attentive throughout the process. Wonderful experience overall. We ordered chicken and veggie pad thai, as well as veggie egg rolls. They were actually pretty good, considering everything was from giant aluminum trays. Because of this great experience, I had high hopes for dinner in the restaurant itself. Unfortunately my expectations were not met for the most part. Thai iced tea -- 5/5 I always get a Thai iced tea at every Thai restaurant. Dao's version is actually the best I've had so far in Chicago. It wasn't too sweet and had a nice amount of tea flavor. Mini vegetable egg rolls -- 4/5 Pretty good and pretty standard. They were filled with carrot, cabbage, some other stuff I can't remember, and served with sweet and sour sauce. Thai pepper steak -- 3.5/5 The meat was tender and flavorful, but the problem was the vegetables. They were slightly undercooked for my tastes and didn't really taste like anything. Chicken pad thai -- 3/5 My boyfriend got this and I had several bites. The flavor was decent but I felt like the texture was too mushy, like they had cooked the noodles too long. It was also oddly cut up into, like, 2 inch pieces. Chicken pad khee mao (spicy crazy noodles) -- 2/5 One of my favorite Thai dishes, but Dao really dropped the ball here. I'm not quite sure what they were doing. First, my plate had a heaping pile of raw bean sprouts, as well as a ton of stir fry veggies (carrots, red and green peppers, jalapenos). The vegetables had the same problem as the ones in the Thai pepper steak, where everything was slightly undercooked and flavorless. My chicken was cooked well but also tasted bland. My theory is that they don't cook the ingredients of a single dish in the same pan. I bet they just assemble everything in the end, toss it with different sauces depending on the dish, and call it a day. That's likely why flavors weren't really penetrating the individual ingredients. But hey, what do I know. Worst of all, though, the pad kee mao was NOT spicy whatsoever. It's supposed to be "spicy crazy noodles"! Red pepper flakes from the spice rack definitely saved the dish and probably turned it to a 3/5. Thankfully, Dao had excellent customer service. My BF and I came on a weekend night so the restaurant was relatively full. The waiters and waitresses were still very attentive, e.g. always made sure our waters were filled, asked if we wanted more condiments, quickly removed empty dishes. OVERALL, I think the food is a solid 3/5, but I'll bump up one star for the great service. read more

The rama chicken tasted like it has a lot of peanut butter in it. and had too much sauce. The broccoli, however, was cooked nicely and had a nice crunch to it. The pad thai had lemon in it. Wah :(. The pad thai sauce was too sweet for me. I want lime because it tastes ... sharper? Lemon tastes sweeter and doesn't cut through the sweet and sourness of the pad thai as much as lime can. I like how they can bring a tray of different spices on for you. I wish they had labels, though, because I added a spoonful of BBQ spice to my pad thai, thinking it was red chili pepper spice. But then again, I didn't specify how I wanted it cooked, so maybe it's my fault. However, I did like the spicy sauce. The Pad Thai was too tangy for my taste. It definitley did not taste like the Pad Thai I've enjoyed back in California. The customer service was great though. The servers were nice and friendly.
