I've been wanting to try the vegan sandwich options at Mallos for a long time. We tried both - the…read moreeggplant and the cauliflower Reuben. Both were good. The Reuben was a little too unidimensional for my taste, because the cauliflower is fermented I think there isn't enough contrast with the sauerkraut which is really the only other ingredient. the flavor was great but the texture wasn't my favorite. The eggplant itself was amazing! I loved it. But again I think the composition of the sandwich was a little off for my taste, there was a pile of arugula that overpowered the eggplant which was star but a very small portion of the sandwich. The homemade chips were the best I've ever had and YOU SHOULD TRY!!!! Phenomenally crisp and cooked to perfection. Overall, I don't think I'd come back often because there arent a ton of vegan options and I was enthralled by them but if I was in a group with meat eaters and they wanted sandwiches I would happily tag along and get one of these options again.

I hopped on Yelp, saw the great reviews, took 1 minute to browse the menu, and I turned around and walked right in to Mallo's. The space is pink with black and white checkered floor. I was greeted as I walked in and they were patient while I read the menu (again). Everything sounded great but I went with the veggie sandwich but made into a wrap. They brought my food out to me on a little tray with a paper branded with the same cute dog. I loved the wrap! I'm glad I went the wrap route - it was perfect. Mozzarella, arugula, fried eggplant, olives - yummm. It was so delicious and flavorful and a big portion! I took leftovers back to my hotel and had them the next day. I'm so glad I stopped in to this spot and would definitely come back for more of their tasty food.

This is the first restaurant I visited my first time here in Albany New York. Let me tell you, I…read morewas NOT disappointed. The Italian mix was beyond fresh and tasty. I also had the Antipasto salad, and I have to say, it was some of the best I have ever had. So much so, I had to go back two days later for another large helping of it. I have never had antipasto taste that great, and I am not exaggerating it in the least. The other pasta salad that the others got was equally as delicious. That pickle though, MY WORD that was a good pickle. The only regret I have will be not being able to take the entire business home with me to Raleigh/Durham NC. Service was impeccable. They greeted both days like they had known me my entire life, and once my southern twang came out, they immediately asked where from. Clean, neat, totally shop-able and satisfying, it was one of the best of experiences on my visit to Albany. SO EXCEPTIONAL!

It was ready by the time I arrived. The eggplant was still warm, delicious and very cheesy, but somehow not very messy. The small sandwich (6 inch?) was generous in size so I shared it with my husband. The staff is always friendly and efficient. The business looks clean from the display cases to the well stocked shelves. Not a fancy place but welcoming. There's an area with tables and chairs for customers who want to eat-in.

Hot. Beef. Sandwich…read more It's hard to think of five bucks better spent. Usually, that sandwich is made of their famous corned beef or pastrami. How famous is their pastrami? Well, it's what they use at Katz's in NYC. Except at Katz's they apparently boil the pastrami before serving it so it totally falls apart. That's what I learned from the passionate fellow behind the counter today. Well, that, and they had no pastrami prepared for sandwiches. Well, I'll just have to come back. For years I've been told of the legend of this place. The place where Old World Provisions meats are sliced and served on bread for a pittance. A manufacturing facility where there is a small retail operation that's open to the public. Helmbold Fritz is like a beacon on a hill. Well, it's on a hill at least. It's a bit tucked away in the warehouse district around the corner from the Franklin Ballroom. And when you pull into the driveway, you have to go around back to get to the front door. It's almost as if they don't want you there. But they totally want you there. Kinda. When I called to ask if they were open for lunch, the response was, "Lunch? We open at 11." I'm unclear if the wooden picnic table around the back of the deli was actually meant for visitors of if its for employees, but we decided to stick around and eat there instead of having a car picnic. It was a glorious day. Part of me is a bit worried about coming back here for pastrami. Because if it's half as good as I suspect it will be, it might be hard to keep me away. That fifth star is being reserved until I try their signature products. But I promise to report back.
