But scoring some tasty brown leather shoes for a fraction of the retail price is enough to drag me out to airport way. And as factory stores go, this one is pretty upscale. Danner makes boots and shoes for hiking, casual wear, hunting and various line-of-duty types of uses (firefighters, police, etc). The quality is good. The style is (for the most part) solid. And while this kind of product normally costs a pretty penny, the sticker shock at this location is quite reduced. The only real drawback to this shopping experience was the lack of on-floor employee service. I was able to ask a couple of questions while shopping, but I could have and would have asked more (and possibly purchased more) had there been more hands on deck and employees available. I have been in here a couple of times now with my husband. We came into this location on their opening day when they were giving out Voodoo doughnuts and awesome deals. That was a couple of years ago and my husband's boots finally wore down to the nub. He had questions about retooling the boots and the guy helping us, was really knowledgeable and figured out it was cheaper to just buy a new pair, but did go over the price sheet so he could see the break down. We like the fact they are locally made and it is kind of fun to watch them making them. How many people would want to be fish-bowled at work? It is fun though, to see it in action. I've bought my last three pairs of boots here. In my opinion, some of the boots available are made right here in Portland. You can save a nice chunk of change if you can find what you are looking for in the factory seconds room. Most defects are very minor, a stain in the leather, a stich slightly off the mark. Danner makes high quality boots for members of the armed services, firefighters, loggers, hunters, hikers, etc. My first pair of Danners looked like the standard Army issue boots but were far superior in comfort and durability. I used them mostly when training in the high plateau of Hawaii were there was lots of sharp lava. The boots took a beating but served their purpose well. I now have a pair of the lightest hiking boots for trail use and high-toped hiking boots for off trail use and for areas with rattle snakes. My only complaint is that the light books have very thick, round shoe laces that tend to come undone unless tied in a double knot, which is just possible. read more

mmmkay I bought my Danner Explorer boots in 2009 and just had them re-crafted (2015), so I feel qualified to write a review. First of all, these are the most durable and comfortable boots I've ever owned. Red Wings (I've owned a few pairs) do not compare favorably with Danner's Portland-built line. My Explorer boots remind me of a pair of Italian made boots I inherited from my grandfather, which eventually fell apart and could not be rebuilt. This brings me to my second point. I live about 30 minutes from the factory, so getting these boots re-crafted--not resoled but re-crafted--was a cinch. Red Wing sent me to a cobbler to get their boots resoled, and so far as I know factory re-crafting is not an option. Cobblers are great, but they typically can't replace linings and bring boots back to original specs. Danner's Portland built boots are an artisan product backed up by decades of experience (est 1932). I was surprised to find this product in a manufacturer with as much market share as Danner, but there you have it. My final comment and the reason for four stars not five is that I wish these boots were cheaper to buy and recraft. On the other hand, I spend less annually on my Danner boots than I do on Vans, which only last about a year on my feet. read more

The Danner boot annual online sale is a scam. I received notice of the sale starting in my email at 11:04am local time. This was the first notice since the alert to the sale the day before. I went on the site less than an hour later and all the common sizes were shown as sold out. Really??? If you put that little inventory into your big sale, you are lying and it is a classic bait and switch. I had a pair of Danners that I like and I wanted a spare pair. There are two halves to this store. One side is discounted product--things with slight flaws, discontinued styles or colors, etc. This side is mostly self-service--the boxes are stacked with the display, and it's hit or miss if they have what you want in your size in the discounts section. If they do, there are good deals to be had. Even in this section the staff are still helpful answering questions, finding things for you, and explaining why a particular thing is on markdown. The other part of the store is the first-quality stock. On this side they only have display examples of the boots out. You need someone to fetch you pairs to try on from the back. Unfortunately, it's sometimes difficult to find someone to help you. If you are a woman shopping in the men's section--either because that's what fits you, or you're shopping for someone else--it's a virtual guarantee they will look right through you all day long. That said, there's always someone at the counter/register area, so if you can't snag someone you can just go there and ask. When you do ask the employees for something they are very nice and will even go above and beyond what you'd normally expect. The frustrating thing is that it seems you do always have to ask. Supposedly they are experts with their product and, I guess, with fitting, but it's almost like they're afraid of customers. Be assertive, ask what I'm looking for, how I plan to use them, what problems I've had with past boots, and then give me your expert advice. Show me you know stuff. I've heard other people have gotten this info out of them, eventually, so apparently the knowledge is there, but it's like pulling teeth to get it. And if you're not giving that expertise, why not just make it all self-service? One thing of note: they do have a ramp, which is important for checking proper fit of hiking boots. Though again, I had to go find this myself--the salesperson never attempted to explain why that might be an important thing to try out. Ultimately, if you're interested in Danners this is probably the only place where you can find all the styles in one place to try on and compare, and also have a shot at getting something deeply discounted. You can, theoretically, also get your questions answered by people with deeper knowledge of the product than at a general shoe store. So it's a very good place to shop and try things. But there's one big thing that makes this just a "try" place rather than a "buy" if I have the option--the return policy. Boots can only be returned in new, unworn condition. I don't know if a pair of boots really fits me until I've worn them. And hiking boots that just don't fit right can be crippling. That's hundreds of dollars you may just be throwing away. REI understands this and will take them back. Unfortunately REI didn't carry the style that was my first choice. When I told the Danner person this was my hesitation, he immediately said he would make an exception and offer an extended return. See, you have to ask. But why? Why isn't this the regular policy if they stand behind their products, their advice, and their fittings? Offer that and this would be my one-stop boot source. Even if it meant I had to make a special fitting appointment to qualify, or it was only on purchases above a certain $ value. read more

This is a great store. It's full of really cool gear, both from Danner and other generally high-quality brands. There are many factory seconds on offer at good discount. They also offer the full Danner line. I had a pair of decent hiking boots with DWR fail after 2 seasons, leaving me with soaked feet after a few miles into a weekend excursion. So I wanted to replace them with something equivalent, but maybe with better overall quality. I hadn't really seen Danner boots up close before and was very impressed by the craftsmanship of both the USA made and overseas offerings. I also wasn't expecting the level of service Taylor provided. He walked me through the boot selection process, explained why the pair I initially gravitated towards were probably the wrong fit, and gave me some other options which fit much better. I've probably been wearing boots with the wrong fit for years without knowing it! I spent about 90 minutes trying different boots and Taylor was very patient with my indecision and helped me figure out what boots were going to work best. Horrible customer service. The 2 managers who run the store are dismissive, rude and very lucky to have jobs if you ask me. They were playing touchy feely games at the recrafting managers office the entire time I was there. I was almost embarrassed for them.the big problem was the wait time for boot repair and their attitude that it was reasonable to wait that long. The whole experience from the moment I walked in to the moment I left I felt like I missed something. I bought a pair of mens shoes for around $300 and the footbeds and soles are worthless. My big toes started wearing through the footbeds within a week! I brought them back and they said it was probably a defect and to try a new pair. The second pair had the same problem. I brought them back again and the clerk suggested buying some $1 liners to fix the problem. Why should I need a cheap liner for a pair of shoes that cost me over $300?!? The shoes seems well built, but the soles and footbeds are pure trash. Avoid until they start getting decent materials. read more

I used to love Danner boots. My old pair were well built and lasted forever. I was also happy to be buying something made in the PNW. Went in about 8 months ago excited to get a new pair and found out very few of their boots are still made in America! Paid extra for a pair that were - which are now showing wear patterns that concern me after only 8 months and minimal use! Having trouble with blisters and breaking the boots in (even though an employee did help fit me originally), so I came back to the store to get some advice and the staff was rude! Danner is no longer a locally owned company. A company from Tokyo bought it out in 2012. The only boots you get a deal on are factory seconds at this store. There is only so many styles to choose from in seconds. The rest of the boots are sold at full retail as to not compete with local businesses. I have used their boots for many years and they do start leaking within six months as another person posted. For the prices they charge for first quality boots I would expect to get more use out of them. Since they are no longer locally owned i will no longer be a loyal Danner boot customer. read more

I recently stopped into the Danner Boot Outlet Store near the Portland OR Airport where I was helped by Taylor in finding a new pair of work boots. I work in the high voltage electrical transmission industry and am often in very rough and remote locations where my equipment cannot fail me. Taylor could not have been any more professional or helpful than he was. His customer service was first class from the word go. He was knowledgeable about every boot I asked him about. I am a buy only American customer and despite the American made boot being somewhat expensive it was worth it for the quality of the build of the boot and more importantly the customer service Taylor provided. I am extremely busy person with very little time at home but was so impressed with this young mans approach to customer service that I thought it worthwhile to punch a hole in my schedule to provide my thanks. I want to support "made in the good ol USA" not made in China boots that have radiation glues; so pay attention to your feet. Anyhow, this store does not look like an outlet store and for the most part does not have outlet store prices. You need luck to find your size and style you wish at a discount.but likely not so much . I need to find out what "seconds" is all about as well. It's a huge, welcoming airy store, beautifully designed, good in feel and a huge selection of regular priced merchandise. You get to take a peek through the huge viewing windows as craftsmen work on recrafting boots (see price list photo); nice to see they are still doing this these days. They are owned by ABC Mart out of Japan, that being said I went there for some help bec. My department was asking us to get this certain Danner boot. The staff ignored me and I guess its common according to other reviews., but the last straw was the recrafting manager and store manager were talking and neither of them could answer a simple timeframe question. What happened to knowledgeable and trained workers? I ended up ordering my boots but the Danner name of old is history. I went here looking for an inexpensive but quality pair of shoes for a wedding I was asked to be in. Everything was so expensive though. Shoes ranging from $200-$400... But then I found out they have shoes that are slightly defected (or second-hand shoe they call it) that are around $100. That was still a bit expensive for me but Jaimie helped me out by letting me use her employee discount, which saved me 40% from a defective pair. In the end I spent only $64 on a very nice pair of brown boots. The only defect it had was some of the holes were slightly out of alignment. You would never even know if you weren't looking for it. I give Danner's a 5-star review because I found what I wanted and they gave me a huge discount on an already discounted shoe. Great service! read more

Our family uses multiple Danner products for work, hunting, etc. and have been a repeat customers for particular products over the years. That being said, this store has the worst customer service ever. Over the past few years we've been to this location a handful of times. NOT ONCE has anyone approached us to see if we needed assistance. They stand in groups behind the counter and gossip like high schoolers completely ignoring everyone in the store. When you do manage to wrangle someone for help they seem annoyed that you're asking for help or wanting to try something on. If I wasn't already in the store knowing which products I needed I would walk out and never return. read more

I have two pairs of Danner and plan on purchasing another pair soon. The sizing can take longer than some might be used to as they have very specific sizing (check out their website) but it's all to ensure that you get as close to perfect as possible with the fit of the shoe. I would recommend you go to a reputable shoe/suit/tailor to have someone that deals with higher end foot wear measure your feet before ordering. I've made two returns (one for me and one for a pair I bought for my wife) and the return process was then best I've ever had! The customer support was located in Portland and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They even helped me with several questions I had about taking care of a discontinued boot. I can't say enough about the people or the products*! * I'm referring specifically to the products that are "Made in USA" and not to the ones that have been outsourced to China. I was more than a little upset when I learned that Lacrosse footwear had bought Danner and started outsourcing product. I will still continue to buy boots that are sourced and made here tho to support those wonderful workers out in Oregon! read more

I know that the name Danner has in the past has meant high quality boots, but the reality is that I work outdoors and within 6mths of buying a $230 pair of danner boots they started leaking. I read other reviews for Danner boots especially the Quarry, and others were having the same problem. At first I bought something other than the Quarry, but 6mths and 2 weeks later (warranty was 6mths) they started leaking. Now I must say when I took them in they gave me a "one time trade in since I was past my warranty" but my only trade in option was the Quarry. Some of Danner's boots are made in China and some are made in the USA, if they are gonna use Made in the USA in advertising they should all be made here. I will never recommend their boots for people like myself who work outdoors in the Oregon weather, cause they will leak its just a matter of when. For all those that think all shoes sooner or later will leak, I have a pair of Converse work boot/shoes and 3 years later the support in them is gone but I wore them in the water today and they still did not leak. read more
