    Salmon special
    Brian B.

The food was excellent started with the bread, escargot and shrimp dishes The main course was salmon and trout For dessert, bread pudding, and the chocolate bar everything was excellent. Make sure you bring a wonderful bottle of wine.

The shellfish waterzooi would be great with a dry bubbly or white wine.

Thank Dutch Jesus Joncarl is back in South Philly. This new spot is brimming with warmth and charm, and Lord have mercy the food is absolutely heavenly. My eyes rolled in the back of my head so many times I thought I'd go cross-eyed. Every bite was just that good. For dinner, I had the seafood stew, which is like a Dutch variation of a bouillabaisse. It was loaded with clams, shrimp and calamari in a creamy white sauce that I sopped up with bread and slurped by the spoonfuls. My two table mates had the rabbit dish and a sea bass special, both of which were heartily devoured. We brought two bottles of red that paired perfectly with everything. Though a bubbly or dry white would have been decadent with my white sauce-based stew. Next time! There are strong essences of Noord here -- especially on the menu -- but Dankbaar is somehow cozier, more comfortable and familiar; like dining in a living room. You almost want to look up and greet every new diner coming in to join you. Joncarl works furiously in the kitchen, by the light of a lamp. He personally brings out each dish, many of which come in unique, homey bowls and pots. The waitstaff is absolutely charming. And a cabinet of drawers in the bathroom reveals all kinds of fun little surprises. This is a true neighborhood gem. Bring an appetite and a little patience to linger over your lovingly made food and a bottle of whatever you choose. You'll be made to feel right at home. Recommendations: The fish stew; whatever whole fish is on special; spring for the bread -- the garlicky butter is worth every penny on its own; the rabbit stew on a chilly night; the chocolate bark for dessert; and the homemade pickles if they have them!

We've been wanting to try this place for a while since we heard Joncarl opened up shop again on East Passyunk. Really loved the intimate, candle-lit vibe of the dining room, and the fact that it's BYO is always a plus in my book. We started with the housemade pickles (various vegetables pickled in different and interesting ways; I understand the particulars change on a regular basis) and the meatball special, which was delicious. I had the rainbow trout, which was very simply but skillfully prepared and flavorful, and my husband had a prawn terrine special that he said was out of this world (I would have tasted it but didn't want to go to the hospital). The buttercake (boterkoek) with advocaat cream was the perfect way to finish off the meal. All in all, I can't wait to take others here - I'm just sad they're only open on Friday and Saturday!

Delicious food in an intimate, quiet setting. Service was attentive and friendly. Make sure to make a reservation.

This review is hard to write because I'm afraid I won't get it right. I won't accurately describe how sweet and intimate the place is, I won't be able to describe how beautiful the food was, I will not be able to accurately convey the hospitality, the spectacular service, or how one feels spending such a lovely weekend night here and all of what is right that happens when one enters the door. Yeah. I'm afraid I won't get it right. But you know who gets it right? Chef Joncarl Lochman. Every. Damn. Time. I've followed him around the city, dining at his beautiful restaurants, marveling at his food and definitely his hospitality. Care and love is the foundation of every one of his establishments. Dankbaar (which means "grateful" in Dutch) should not be missed. It's only open on Friday and Saturday nights which makes a weekend reservation that much more anticipatory. Always start with the pickles. He's famous for them and they are a delight! Cinnamon on beets? Delicious! Remember when brussel sprouts started showing up on menus? And ordering them meant fishing them out of the oil that they were fried in? Not. Here. They were roasted and so tender and I could actually taste all of the sweet, nutty flavor of the brussel sprout. They are served with caraway creme fraiche, carrots and sweet cranberry. I ordered the sea bass for the entree. A whole fish... DEBONED. All of the tender, moist, buttery fish with a bevy of fresh roasted vegetables on top. Just putting each meaty bite into my mouth without having to worry about navigating a mouthful of fish bone was such a treat! I will be dreaming about this for days. Chef Lachman remembered me which made me feel all verklempt but I managed to calm down and carry on a conversation with him as he even pulled up a chair for a second to ask US questions and imbue our experience with even more intimacy and the feeling of showing up at the best dinner party ever. Liz, who is the server at this intimate place is kind and efficient and of course conveys just as much care as Chef Lachman's counter part. The white table cloths, warm glow of candles and the big window that opens up to Passyunk are all beautiful touches that immediately center one around the most lovely evening. And check out the bathroom! Open the little drawers and find necessary items, treats and so much more as hidden little gifts. Then leave them a note on the chalk board. And definitely tell them that the night you just had was spectacular. I sure did.

I like to hit restaurants in the Passyunk neighborhood of Philadelphia when I am down. I was delighted to learn that Joncarl, former chef-owner of Noord, had opened a new place near his old one but about half the size. Candlelit with white table cloths, intimate but festive, one could easily think they were at a dinner celebration in the large dining room of a private home, with warm hosts and a truly great person cooking in the kitchen. There were 4 of us so we got to share quite a few of the menu options. To start, smoked trout that was just wonderful, beets with strawberries as a surprisingly great accompaniment and goat cheese, beautiful and tasty prawns, and house made pickled vegetables in many varieties. Then we had an impressive whole bass and a perfect salmon filet (both with lots of vegetables), rabbit (with cabbage and sausage) and (more) prawns, served over an abundance of mussels). Finally, we managed 3 excellent desserts, a blueberry brioche, peaches poached in wine, and the best chocolate bark (and close to the best chocolate) I have ever tasted. Plus the wine and champagne we brought, which added to the festivities. Service was above and beyond: not only charming and friendly, but also exceptionally knowledgeable. Pacing of the meal was just as one would want, neither too quick nor too slow. Dankbaar means grateful in Dutch. We were certainly grateful for such a wonderful dining experience, and everyone at the restaurant, from chef to servers, evoked a sense of gratitude that we had joined them for dinner in their "home." Oh. When (not if) you go, don't miss the restroom. You've never seen anything like it.

Crushed this Waterzooie & pickle plate.

Quaint little BYO place. If you liked Noord, you're going to love this. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy. The food is comforting, refined, and filling. Liz, the server, was really sweet, kind, and attentive. She coursed out the meal perfectly. So happy to have Joncarl's food again and to have something like this in the neighborhood.

We slowly began to realize that unless you're a regular, you will receive crappy service. We needed to flag the bartender down for our drink order (middle-aged woman with dark blonde hair). We also needed to flag her down to order food. She was chatty with our neighbors and other patrons but averted her eyes away from us. WTH? She walked past us numerous times but never once checked in the entire time. Our dirty plates sat in front of us for over 30 minutes (it was clear we were finished). We stacked them ourselves and pushed them forward. It was off-putting and there was zero reason to ignore us. We waved her down for our check and she even let our payment sit on the bar for nearly 15 minutes. Another bartender took our check and asked if we needed change. This experience put a bad taste in our mouths. We will not revisit.

The inside is very spacious and gives a very relaxed atmosphere. For the prix fixe meal, we chose: Ajvar and Pita, Mozzarella Sticks, Hanger Steak, Jelly Crepes, and the chocolate cake. Everything was amazing from start to finish. I can't believe this is probably the best steak I've had in a very long time. At first glance, I was hoping to get some steak sauce, but as it turns out, it wasn't necessary at all. They have tenderized this steak and seasoned it incredibly. It was a very soft, juicy, and delicious piece of meat that needed no sauce. I was also a huge fan of the jelly crepes for dessert. They were very fluffy and had the right amount of blueberry filling. I was conflicted between getting the jelly or the nutella filling, but I knew I would be satisfied either way given how the meal went so far. I also really appreciate the good variety of dishes they have on both their restaurant week and regular menu. Needless to say Balkan Fusion was a very pleasant surprise that blow every expectation out of the water. I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

The husband started with a cup of Borsch soup, very flavorful with a nice mix of beets and carrots. Then we shared the Hummus Platter appetizer. Nicely done with Kalamata olives, celery, cucumber, carrots and pita bread. The main event included Musaka and Turli Tave. The musaka was layered up with potatoes, ground beef & pork, topped with egg and cheese with a side salad of cabbage in a vinegar dressing. The flavors were very good and there was enough to feed two. The turli tava was really tasty. It was in a stew form and plentiful. It came with pita bread which allowed him to wipe the crock clean, as a good Italian is taught. The final scene included Honey Cake and Tulumba. The cake was finely layered and extremely decadent. The tulumba were also very good, small fried dough similar to churros, but soaked in simple syrup. Alex (chef owner) and his wife Monica (server), along with their little guy Noah were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Definitely a return trip in the future for us. If you are in the neighborhood and hungry, give them a try. Don't worry, they have stuff on the menu for the non-adventurous. It's a BYOB too, that's a plus. You may have to fold your mirrors in to hit cars, I'm not exaggerating. I had envisioned a larger restaurant but this was small with maybe 7 tables. We sat at one with padded wooden benches that was comfortable. We were the only customers when arrived for lunch. The menu is limited and the waitress was as authentic as the food. There were some lunch specials posted but we opted to try three things: mushroom cheese bread, potato pancakes and the blueberry pierogies. The pierogies were definitely handmade and on the larger side as soon as you cut it open, the blueberries rushed out. There was a sweet sugary sauce on the top. That was unexpected. They were served cold and not warm. They were sweet. There were two of us and we each were only able to eat one of the six that came in the order. The mushroom cheese bread was drizzled with ketchup, which was unexpected that cheese was melting and gooey. Our favorite item was definitely the potato pancakes. They were cooked to perfection and the sour cream was the perfect condiment. They do have limited drinks here, including bottled water, cans of Pepsi and diet Pepsi, and some unique bottled drinks like birch water. The biggest drawback for the spot was that I just didn't think it was as clean as I would've liked it to be. It is authentic and as you eat, there is a man in the back that you can see making pierogies by hand. I'm glad that we tried this, but I'm not sure that I would return.

Once inside, the feeling was a lot better. Not much in the way of art work on the walls, but still had a nice warm feeling. There were 3 of us and we did a lot of sharing. The Scallops in Shredded Filo was good but the Crab & Artichoke, with garlic aioli, parsley and capers was definitely "the winner". The Seafood Ceviche with scallops, halibut and shrimp was also delicious. While 2 of us were still enjoying our appetizers, our entrees were brought to the table and our plates moved to make room for them. I made the comment to no one in particular that I would try to eat faster as the seafood ceviche was pushed off to the side of the table. We had a 7 pm reservation and for the most part the restaurant was full by that time but we were not intentionally eating slowly. I could see if we might be taking up too much time eating and they had to move the tables but that was not the case as the restaurant was only half full by the time we left. For an establishment that is charging the prices that it is, Avg $18 for appetizers, high $30s for entrees, no one wants to feel rushed. The Halibut Almondine with Beurre Blank was good but not as good as we had hoped, with it being on the dry-side. The Dorado with Baby Vegetables was delicious as well as beautifully presented with "potato fish scales". A shared warm Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream completed our meal. Their menu is extensive making it an easy decision to return but I will mention that we would like a more leisurely experience this time around.

The Choice is one of those restaurants that appears to be hiding in plain sight. When we first…read moreconsidered dining here, noting that it had received very positive reviews from a variety of sources, we were surprised to find that no one of our acquaintance had even heard of the place, let alone darkened the door. And yet... when our party of three arrived for a recent Wednesday evening reservation, we found the 50-seat dining room full and joyously overflowing. ... And, given the fact that the menu is awash with a host of French and Asian fusion innuendos, you would probably never suspect that the restaurant is owned by two Ukrainian families. But, since the well-traveled co-proprietor Volodymyr "Vlad" Hyvel served as sous-chef in London's Nobu and also put in time at Le Cirque, Alain Ducasse and Jean-Georges, his diverse culinary inclinations make impeccably perfect sense. Matters piscatorial - both preludes and main courses - play a major role in Mr. Hyvel's repertoire. His starters, for instance, range from cold items such as Yellowtail Sashimi, Tuna Tartare, and Lobster Ceviche to a comforting tomato-y Fish Soup awash with shrimp & scallops. Among his starters, however, the chef's magnum opus proved to be his extraordinary Scallops in Shredded Filo (pictured). The rich & meaty deep-fried bivalves arrived at table accompanied by a zippy wasabi cream sauce... and were simply irresistible. Entrées are pretty evenly divided between "Meat" and "Fish and Seafood." In addition to Filet Mignon, Short Ribs, and Grilled New Zealand Lamb Chops with a spicy Peruvian sauce, the former category also included Chicken Teriyaki and Duck Canton splashed with a seductive caramel-coffee-orange sauce. Once again, however, for our party at least, seafood took center stage. My dining partners decided upon the Halibut and Branzino, respectively. The former was companioned by mushrooms and finished with a green pepper dressing; the latter was presented with creamy mushrooms, crisp potato balls, and a side of fennel dressing. My Wild Caught Striped Bass (pictured) was a particular treat, as the filet was wrapped in a crispy potato crust, served on a bed of creamy leeks, and splashed with a delicate red wine sauce. If The Choice has a weakness, it is their desserts. As noted above, appetizers & entrées are both delightfully innovative and cosmopolitan in scope. When it comes to sweet endings, however, options are exceedingly limited and creativity is conspicuous by its absence - Chocolate Meltdown with Vanilla Ice Cream... Pecan Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream... Warm Apple Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream... Ice Cream. You get the picture. Given the quality of all that has gone before, you expect more... and it simply isn't forthcoming. Just be prepared... Dinner at The Choice is not a cheap date. Those aforementioned highly-touted Scallops in Shredded Filo, for instance, will set you back $18.00. Lobster Ceviche goes for $28.00; with appetizers topping out at $32.00 for the Pan-Seared Foie Gras. Entrée-wise, that Butter-Poached Lobster will put a sizeable $60.00 dent in your wallet, while all finny fare goes for either $35.00 or $40.00. Meats are $35.00 per, with Chicken Teriyaki occupying the menu's bottom rung at $28.00. Even those rather nondescript downhome desserts will set you back $12.00 per. Given the current state of economic affairs, I am not suggesting that these prices are outrageous by any means. However, given the restaurant's location - the western 'burbs - and the laidback atmosphere and service, they are a bit on the heady side. Not exactly a likely candidate for a last-minute inexpensive casual evening out... Fortunately, the fact that you may BYOB helps to soften the blow somewhat.

It makes the rolls absolutely irresistible. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the food but I have a video where we are celebrating our friend's birthday. Look how friendly is staff and chef! And all people who were in the restaurant. Highly recommend this place for both the food and the overall experience.
