This might be my favorite bar in Philly yet! It's so quaint, sophisticated but not pretentious. Casual attire (we showed up after a tennis match and didn't get one side eye!Other patrons also wore cute/ smart casual fits!) The bartenders were so nice, speedy, and knowledgeable! They patiently explained to us the differences among some drinks and provided great recs based on our preferences! The customers/ patrons that are drawn to Grace and Proper are what make this place shine! We had a full dating intervention with strangers (we asked them for advice!) and it was so fun! This is the kind of place that makes you believe in humanity and whimsical connections again! The lighting indoors can be VERY dim as we were there around sunset. I think a few dim bulbs in the corner would still carry the vibe but make it less dark. We all had different kinds of cocktails and love the presentation and creative recipes! Our favorite spot in Philly! My husband claims that Claude AI recommended this place. We absolutely loved it! The entrance is so charming. With potted flowers all over the restaurant. Smattering of patio tables on both Eighth Street and Carpenter. When I saw it, I said yes before even looking at the menu. We ordered drinks at the bar and took them outside. It's very chic but also casual. There were mostly pairs or trios - no families. Not th. We saw people ordering a little bit of everything. Honestly, the menu looked great! The kale Caesar salad, the piri piri buffalo chicken dip, bacon wrapped plums, etc. The drinks were the best we had on our Philly trip! The Spanish Monk which had gin, lemon juice, frothed egg white and smoked paprika. I had the GGG which they carried over from their old menu. I will start by saying that I had been wanting to come here for a long time. I somehow stumbled upon their Instagram page and was intrigued by all the Portuguese and Spanish influence (I am a Brazilian historian and have studied and traveled in Portugal and Spain). The wine and snacks did not disappoint. The Spanish cider, the vinho verde, and the sauvignon blanc were all perfect, and the Piri Piri chicken dip and tuna stuffed peppers were fun, distinctive bar food. What did disappoint was the service. From the moment I walked in I noticed how unfriendly the staff was. There was no greeting. No small talk (I tried). There was no interaction whatsoever. This is awkward considering the tiny size of the establishment. And we just never really felt welcome as a result. You order at the bar. Grab your own drinks. Grab your own water. And then of course comes the 20% mandated tip already on your bill. Perhaps this explains the indifferent service? Not sure I would go back despite the quality food and drinks. read more

Drink review: Saturday night this bar is packed. We ordered the good giving and game cocktail and twice bitten cocktail. Both were great! Twice bitten had a very strong spicy ginger taste. I rarely write reviews, and this is the first negative one I have ever posted. As an owner and operator of multiple businesses in the hospitality industry myself, I know firsthand how challenging this field can be. However, after our experience today, I felt compelled to address this directly with the owner. We have been to your establishment multiple times. Each visit, I try my absolute hardest to be friendly and courteous to your staff, but we consistently leave feeling like some of the team (not all) are doing us a favor just by serving us. Your food is always amazing, but the service, quite frankly, is consistently unwelcoming and rude. I never want to write a review that hurts a business, but some of your staff is in desperate need of hospitality training. People work incredibly hard to afford your prices. While I understand and accept the automatic 20% gratuity, today would have been the first time in my entire life that I chose not to leave a tip. This wasn't an isolated incident, but today was the last straw. In this industry, we all know how difficult customers can be. But when you are someone who goes out of your way not to be difficult, yet you are still treated with disrespect, it leaves a incredibly sour taste in your mouth. Your culinary team is fantastic, and I thank you for the good meals, but I cannot overlook the poor impression left by your front-of-house staff. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. Listen I was not feeling this little spot. I needed some air and a server. I drink too much to be going to the bar for every drink. Wanted to try too many things and had too many questions. I was not interested in doing all that walking back and forth to the bar! It was not that big but it was hot. BUT, when the opportunity surfaced to moved to the bar --- we didn't want to leave. Be aware of the Buffalo dip, great flavor AND great HEAT!!! Seemed to be an all male staff that prepared the food, answered questions, let us taste test and made great cocktails. My review is based on the drinks we had. We stopped by here before our dinner reservation. It's quite small so it was pretty packed when we walked in. But the bartenders were very efficient and nice when we were ordering. There are outdoor sitting that we took advantage of. The drinks are very yummy so which was a plus! There is a self-serve water station where you can choose from still or sparkling water. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and it was crowded the entire time, with a constant influx and outflow of patrons. We were also able to find street parking on the same street without issue. The food and drinks were pretty good, but there was nothing especially astounding. Service was also good; a waiter came and cleared the table multiple times in a timely manner, and they also explicitly explained the 20% gratuity that is included in the bill. What we ordered: Bacon wrapped plums: akin to bacon-wrapped dates with a garlic aioli that paired nicely. Bifana: a bit dry, but felt authentic to what you would find in the Iberian peninsula. Meatballs: the meatballs were delicious. The sauce was a bit tangy. Came with bread to soak up the sauce and some burrata. Tuna stuffed pepper: much smaller and spicier than we were anticipating, and sour as well. Not worth the price point, in our opinion. Drinks: wide selection of cocktails, wines, beers, and shots. I am so impressed with my recent experience here. I have walked by so many times and wanted to come visit ever since I saw that they have Super Bock on tap! We came for drinks recently and they were packed. It was a good scene with some high top seats, bar seats and a few tables outside. The vibe is very casual and feels like you're neighborhood watering hole, but it's much more sophisticated feeling and looking inside and it makes me feel great to be hanging out here. I live SO close to Grace & Proper but it took me over a year to finally visit! My husband and I always fawn over their logo and marketing, really loving all their social media and overall vibe, so we were happy to make plans to visit. We stopped in for HH with a few friends over the winter. The space is quaint, but we snagged a table for our party of 4. It was definitely tight but manageable. I would love to visit in the warmer months when we can take advantage of their lovely outdoor dining! The bar is super cute with lots of European-esque and cozy decor. It was decorated for the holidays during our visit too, which was lovely. We were there for happy hour, which is limited to only a few days a week so be prepared! Their HH menu is small but features some popular cocktails and a fair assortment of snacks. I opted for the Porto Tonico, which was so beautifully presented and had a delicious blend of flavors. It was a great cocktail and at a steal of a price! My dining parters similarly enjoyed their drinks, and we all appreciated that the servers came around for a last call before HH officially ended (that rarely happens any more, in my experience). I peeked through the rest of their drink menu, and it is quite expansive in terms of cocktails, spirits, wines, and beers; they definitely lean into their corner European bar persona! We shared some small plates with cheese and meats, which were perfect for finger foods while enjoying our drinks. The deli was all top notch and high quality! This was a lovely happy hour with friends, and I am glad we finally made it in! Came in late on a Monday night before closing for a quick drink to take advantage of their late-night Monday drink & bites specials! The bartender was a little awkward in my opinion, but wasn't necessarily unfriendly. I just got a vibe that was a little off, but overall as a business, our party was very grateful they didn't make a big fuss about us coming 30 minutes before closing. We were respectful in the fact that we didn't wanna order anything that took too long nor required the kitchen to do a lot of work. Very refreshing and not too strong. Pickled carrots with chili: spicy with balanced acidity and saltiness. I wish the portion was much bigger. Special menu item: asparagus with green goddess. So delicious, perfectly cooked asparagus served on a creamy goddess aioli. I uses bread to soak up that awesome aioli. Meatballs: definitely the highlight of my dinner. The meatballs were a bit dense but the star was the sauce. It was thicker than normal tomato sauce but it was garlicky and full of flavor and had some spicy kick. It was served with toasted crusty bread to soak up that sauce. Highly recommended. My husband had bufana. It had slices of roast pork which in my opinion was a bit tough. Pasteis de Nara was served warm and dusted with powdered sugar. Nice custard. Good way to end the night. Gratuity is already included in the bill. I stumbled upon this place on google maps while searching for Portuguese egg tarts, and I knew I had to come! The egg tart and custard filled donut (reminded me of nai huang bao) were phenomenal, but their food was also amazing. We got two sandwiches on their fresh crusty Portuguese bread, and my favorite was the B.E.C (sweet n spicy crispy bacon, fluffy scrambled eggs, melted swiss gruyere). When I walked by this place, I noticed it was Portuguese and I went to Portugal on my own a few years ago. It brought back some pleasant memories. Then I saw pictures and then I went in afterward. The alcohol is top notch, the food is not a lot but not too little and superb quality. Options for imported items and food combinations that blend well together for savory. Probably sweet treats if they offer any offer a similar experience but my stomach is only so big. Staff is friendly and they are on top of their game to let us know beforehand that tip is auto added 20% and have signage on their bar table too. Food is available until midnight which I love because it is quality food and not some completely unhealthy snacks only or nothing. I feel comfortable making the trip to visit this classy bar, especially if I can hang with a small group of friends or one friend because of all these set up natural "accommodations " in place. The orange wine was more like a white wine with a tinge of orange- not my personal fave but nothing wrong with it. I tend to prefer more sweeter tasting drinks. As you may know, fresh oranges are known in Portugal as well as the pastels de natas which they also offer here. I would be surprised if fresh orange juice is not an option here but I suspect it is. The drinks were delicious and reasonably priced. I had the Porto Tonico and my partner had a cocktail with a sour cherry liquor. We also had a flight of agave spirits, which was unique. It came with a mezcal, a raicilla that was so smooth, and a tequila in shallow, cute, ceramic cups with accompanying orange slices with worm salt. The food was okay. The bifana sandwich was not for us, it was sour and moist. We had meatballs which were better. The pastel de nata was tasty, but I preferred the bola de Berlim which was fluffy and soft but not overly sweet. I would definitely order their pastries again. read more

The chic vibe is accompanied by casual, order at the bar service. It is often PACKED but if you can snag a small outdoor table it's a dreamy place to pop some olives and upscale cheeses. Do not recommend for with kiddos/stroller/dog. I will say, the bifana sando was not what I expected? Soggy bread, tough meat, and pale flavor. What a great Portuguese inspired bar! The vibes are awesome here - lots of different cocktail options and the staff is super accommodating. There is also food available but we only had drinks so will focus on that for my review. It's a nice spot in South Philly - a little tucked away from the CC area bars, but worth the trip! But I have my eye on the truffle potato chips with salami, and the mortadella breakfast sandwich on their day time menu. Met my middle daughter here for drinks and food. I thought I saw somewhere that they offered happy hour and so that was the intention so arrived at 4 to save a bar seat for her. After receiving the menu, I noticed no happy hour and upon inquiry learned that it doesn't exist. It was fine, though. The drinks are reasonably priced and the tapas offer all one needs for sharing small bites and that's what we did. I love the space. There is a long bar, beautiful, old-style-European decor and a very intimate feel. The restaurant was filled by 530 and truthfully I got there at 415 and there were already a few tables and bar seats taken. The menu is wonderful. Lots of tapas choices with delicious breads meats and cheese. I ordered Boquerones with peppers and olives to start. Delicious. Also manchego with drizzled honey and pistachios. We saw the meat and chips order delivered to a customer sitting next to us and that became the next order. The chips were so crispy and seasoned with truffle oil with delicious cured meat spread throughout. So good! The cocktails were so on point and the list is extensive! We also ordered a glass of wine and then ended our evening with a cream filled doughnut that was perfectly creamy and doughy but not too sweet. This is a great spot! read more
