My husband and I had a Groupon for the distillery tour and we enjoyed it very much. We tried a shot of pickle infused vodka and it was very smooth. The tour guide was knowledgeable. It's a small but fun distillery.

Great drink options and if you can make it over for happy hour, even better.

Great drinks choices and love the ambiance of an indoor/outdoor bar on a great sunny day

With Spring finally upon us, I gotta say...one of the smartest things we did was choose to check out Stateside on one of the first warm weathered nights of the year. The build of the restaurant itself is quite unique - very open air, with the bar being open to both the inside and out. It not only gave it a great vibe and made it feel much larger than it actually was, but it also provided a consistent breeze and fresh air throughout the night. While our food was good, it definitely felt like a place you'd sooner go to just get drinks. Their food menu is quite small, and I saw more people simply enjoy seating outside and hanging with friends. That said, the type of food isn't anything you can't find at the next local bar (burgers, wings, fries, etc.) I will say, I felt like their burger was one of the best I have had in awhile. It was cooked perfectly. I personally loved their pairing of the onion jam and pickles. Each bite packed a punch of sweet and salty. Specifically, I thought the burger was really well played with the pickles being cut long and flat, that covered the entire bottom bun. A lot of little details that led to a delicious sandwich. Beyond that, something notable about their fries was the curry ketchup - REALLY interesting! Keep in mind - parking in Passyunk is really tough. They don't make reservations. So be thoughtful in your timing and preparation for parking.

I hate to do it. But this experience was on the sub-par side. So, full disclosure, we were trying to make it for brunch at The Dutch which closes at 2. We got there at 145 and service was unavailable. We looked around and landed here. Before entering, I asked if they served brunch. They do. All good. I should have looked at the menu, though. They did have French toast, egg dish, burger and fries but it was a very limited menu. I went with the two eggs any way but should have looked closer at the menu. It stated eggs my way with potatoes but I guess I took it for granted that there would be toast. How can one eat eggs without toast? Especially if you order sunny side up? No toast. I asked. Eggs, potatoes that was it. If you want breakfast meat, that is not available. My kid ordered eggs cooked medium and the yolk ran. I had one egg sunny and one egg hard. I ordered a mimosa and it came with a cap of foam (See photo. I hadn't even had a drink of it yet) and when I approached the bartender, she explained that's how mimosas appear if they are fresh. Huh? She was nice. But in all of my years (and SO many mimosas) I've never been served a mimosa like this and was perplexed as to how this made it to a paying customer? I also commented that the glass wasn't filled and she told me that was as "high as they fill their mimosas" which seemed weird. The cheese plate was sparse (grapes were cut in half) and when we asked for more bread it wasn't toasted like the first portion. There were a couple of cocktails that were decent but I can not at ALL recommend the brunch. I think they should take it off of their menu. No toast? No meat? Fourteen dollars for two sub-par eggs and potatoes? Nope. Sorry. This was one disappointing place.

I'm going with 3 stars because they were apparently understaffed, so the slow service wasn't too big of a deal. It took a while for the server to come to our table but once he did we didn't have any issues with service from there. The cocktails were presented very nicely and tasted delicious, which is great, but leads me to the perplexing nature of my following complaint: the charcuterie. The charcuterie was served in a plastic takeout container (mind you we were eating indoors at a table, totally traditional dining). The mustard and almonds came in individual plastic containers as well, with the 12 or so crackers provided wrapped inside a zip lock bag. The meat was okay - it was served alongside sliced cucumber which I found to be a pretty odd pairing but whatever. The icing on the cake was the packet of Kraft honey that you would expect to get at McDonald's which we didn't bother to use. Granted this was not the world's most expensive charcuterie, but come on. It felt like we were being served a Lunchables meal alongside craft cocktails. With the level of presentation of the cocktails being relatively high we were just perplexed by this charcuterie which was a total joke of a dish. EDIT: I saw from other reviews after posting mine that the charcuterie is not usually served like this which makes me wonder why my party was served a sub-par dish without any explanation. For a place that charges $14 for drinks, I would expect my charcuterie to be served on some type of board or plate even and not to have to squeeze Kraft honey out of a little ketchup type packet that I'm sharing with multiple people. I'm pretty angry about this in hindsight, lowering my rating to 2 stars. Photos below.

A few weeks ago, I went with my friends (professional oyster slurpers) to Stateside, located in the East Passyunk area of Philadelphia. Passyunk is the classic "old-school" area of Philadelphia that's been renovated with plenty of delicious restaurants. Stateside focuses on only domestic spirits and supports local farmers. Everything in-house is made stateside, get it They had probably over 100 different types of whiskeys and rye. Although it was happy hour, we didn't partake in any drinks, just the food. As for happy hour, it goes from 5-7 pm daily and includes Buck-a-Shuck oysters, 1/2 off drafts, $5 old fashions and $5 house wines. We ordered 6 oysters each that were on happy hour special. They had a few other varieties, mostly from the west coast but those weren't included in the specials. They were served all the accouterments- hot sauce, horseradish, vinaigrette, and lemons. I like being able to choose what I put on my oysters, not have the restaurant tell me what I should enjoy. We also ordered the Lobster & shrimp deviled eggs: saffron, bacon, and pickled mustard seed. I'm personally not a huge deviled egg fan but my friends seemed to love it. I didn't care for the saffron sauce, because it overpowered everything. The lobster was a nice addition, but I felt it was masked. Additionally, we got the Shishito peppers and tomatoes. This was my favorite thing that we ordered. The peppers had a great char on them and the tomatoes were cut thick. The acidity balanced everything out. Lastly, we got the charcuterie board. I was kind of disappointed in the charcuterie board. It came with grilled halloumi, duck prosciutto, and pulled pork. Additionally, there were apples, carrots, pickled jalapenos, quince paste, and roasted peanuts. The duck prosciutto was amazing. It was such a good texture, would order a pound of this to snack on. As for the halloumi cheese, I thought it had a rubbery texture. The pulled pork was extremely crispy. If I knew it would have been like the crispy ends, I would have liked it better, but I expected a much moister product. All in all, Stateside was okay. The happy hour specials were nothing crazy and the food on the menu was better than the average bar. It definitely has elevated American classics. I love the concept of having everything made within the United States and using local farmers when applicable. The whiskey selection is definitely worth the visit. I would recommend sitting outside to enjoy the charm of south Philly.

    Great view from the bar!

Stateside is one of my neighborhood bars and I have been here so many times! In recent years, I feel that the quality and service has become sub-par! I do not love it the way I used to. I'm not sure if it is the establishment itself, or it just can't compete alongside the newer places nearby. I mostly only come here for Happy Hour nowadays as the deals are fantastic! They typically have half-priced drafts, buck-a-shuck oysters, and whiskey specials. It is a great location with lots of potential, and a great view of Passyunk Avenue!

Chef Geno Betz is very talented young chef. If you have not tried his cuisine, I highly recommend a trip. Cocktails are spot on with great balance. Their selection of whiskeys and bourbons is a plus.

Stateside has an OUTSTANDING Happy Hour that compliments the attentive quality of service. This place has been on my list for some time. I love walking past this corner bar. Outside wooden stools (looking into the restaurant), while the bar seating (indoor) overlooks those patrons and the action of Passyunk. Get ready to get cozy with your neighbor. It's not a big bar but it has a lot to offer in atmosphere. Happy Hour consists of $1 Oysters (West Coast Oyster prices are a tad higher), half off beers, discounted wines and more. It's a never ending smorgasbord.

Named the Early Riser, it's made with vodka, cumquats, vieux car

My long-awaited visit to stateside, while enjoyable, didn't live up to the hype. The food was good, no doubt, but a bit pricey and not as outrageously tasty as i suspected based on other reviews. The specialty drinks? Again good - but not great. A little small and perhaps to scientifically apportioned for my taste. I'll take the drinks at Franklin Mortgage for inspired cocktails. Cool ambiance - a little dark for me , but OK. I guess I really expected more for the money. While above average, not enough to draw me back for seconds.

I've only been here for oysters and cocktails. The oysters are decently priced and pretty good here. They are well shucked and fresh. This spot also has a really good beer list. But I love the old fashioneds here. Their happy hour cocktails are $5! The space is a bit small and the bar can fill up fast, but it has a cool modern decor. The window in the front of the building opens up to a bar when it's nice out. This is one of my favorite cocktail spots on East Passyunk.

Second, everyone knows about Roxanne's insanely delicious and creative prix fix menus, but did you know they now have a la carte lunch (and dinner) menus? I recently scored a lunch reservation and ordered a classic combo of burger and fries, with strawberry shortcake for dessert. Roxanne can make the tasty inventive dishes, but can they make hometown faves like this? Yes. Yes they can. The juicy well-seasoned burger, pillow soft homemade sesame bun, secret sauce, and onion would have been enough, but the unmelted, room temp red rock cheese gave the burger a kick in the pants that make this a contender for best burger in Philly. The curly fries would put Arby's to shame. They are thicker, crispier, longer, and softer inside. Lastly, it may seem odd to order dessert after lunch. But, if you are at Roxanne, you could be charged with a crime if you leave without it. I went with the American classic of strawberry shortcake since it's practically a requirement on 4th of July and this is our 250th birthday as well! I think the photo explains itself. Obscenely delicious and, yes, I ate it all. Slowly. So, put Roxanne on the top of your list for a Philly lunch stop, and order the dessert too! You won't regret it.

The Love is better. The space is beautiful, the service is consistently warm, and Stephen Starr's fingerprints are all over it. I love the painted white brick, the floral artwork along the walls, the street-level energy, and the outdoor seating. I also remember taking the elevator upstairs once. I can't remember whether we actually stayed and ate up there or asked to move back downstairs, but the space was charming and extremely private. It would be a great setting for a group dinner or event. Personally, I prefer downstairs. It's darker, livelier, and I like being at street level. The menu historically leaned more heavily into elevated Southern comfort food, which has never been my favorite style of cooking. That's probably why I've tended to prefer The Love for lunch over dinner, especially when Philadelphia has so many Starr restaurants competing for the same night out. I used to get what I remember as a salmon and farro bowl, although the menu appears to have evolved since then. Whatever the exact iteration was, I loved it. Fish and farro are both right in my wheelhouse. I've also enjoyed the kale salad and other lighter dishes. The thing I remember most vividly, though, is the cornbread. It is outrageously good and reason enough to order something for the table. I also give Starr credit for continuing to broaden the range of food styles in his portfolio. Once you've built restaurants across Italian, French, Mexican, English, steakhouses, seafood, and the rest, there are only so many obvious boxes left to check. The Love feels like its own lane: distinctly American, approachable, comfort-driven, and still polished enough to feel like a Starr restaurant. Looking at the menu now, it seems broader than I remember, with more options that appeal to me, and I'd be psyched to go back. The Love probably isn't the first Starr restaurant I'd choose purely based on cuisine, but that says more about the depth of his Philadelphia portfolio than it does about this restaurant. The room, hospitality, location, and execution are all excellent. I'd happily come here any day. Starr doesn't miss.
