Our weekly takeout night led us to Daniela Pasta & Pastries one week for both pasta and pastries! I loved the flavor of the sauce on the gnocchi - it was much more flavorful than the ravioli sauce so it was perfect for me. My partner likes sauce a bit more standard so she loved the ravioli and red sauce. Both pastas were a hit! I also ordered the fruit tart which was wonderful!! Excellent homemade pastas with fresh, vibrant sauces. The eggplant appetizer was delicious, but the pastas we tried were the star of the visit. This was worth the visit - Scialatielli ai Frutti di Mare This pasta is original from Amalfi. Hand-made pasta with semolina, eggs, Pecorino cheese, and parsley, served with mix seafood and fresh tomato sauce. I recently moved to Baltimore and Hampden, and I couldn't be happier that the Italian restaurant on the Avenue with the charming outdoor patio seating is so amazing. The restaurant specializes in Sardinian food (Sardinia is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy), which means it has a lot of unique special dishes! You can't find the items on Daniela's menu on every Italian restaurant's menu! I've tried: the fritto misto (baby anchovies, calamari, and shrimp tossed in corn meal and fried), crab meat soup, Caesar salad with the optional anchovies, culurgiones (Sardinian ravioli stuffed with a potato filling, flavored with fresh mint leaves, Pecorino cheese, parsley, onions, and garlic, and served in a sage sauce), and fregula con cocciulas (fregula cooked with clams, parsley, sun-dried tomatoes, and garlic). Everything I've tried has been so delicious! They do offer some more traditional Italian items (lasagna, gnocchi, ossobuco, veal scaloppine, and antipasti), if you're craving something in particular or if you're not as into seafood (being an island, Sardinian food has a lot of seafood!). Besides the food being very good, the restaurant is CHARMING. Seriously, it has one of the best patios in the neighborhood (maybe the best?), and the inside is very charming, too. The service was great. I've eaten there and gotten takeout (DoorDash). It's a special restaurant. I'm thrilled to live so close to a great regional Italian restaurant; I will definitely be a regular. We had a light lunch yesterday, Saturday. Great ambiance, really unique on that porch, up high, with a view on the Avenue, beautiful setting! Our waitress (apologies, I forgot the name) was very sweet, attentive, helpful. My ravioli were good, although the Caprese salad was made with cherry tomatoes and not much mozzarella, little strips here and there. Otherwise I would have assigned five stars. Mediocre and overpriced Italian food. I got the lasagna which was overpriced for its size. I'm used to huge portion sizes from Italian restaurants so I was disappointed. The noodles were also overcooked - I don't expect lasagna to be al dente but these were too soft. I also prefer ricotta cheese as a filling over béchamel sauce (but that's mostly a preference thing so that's not a criticism of the restaurant). The sauce was fine but not amazing. I haven't given a 5-star review in a while . . . Although I had heard of it before, I had Daniela the first time at the Great Grapes Food & Wine Festival earlier this year. I'm pretty sure its the only Sardinian restaurant inthe city. It was incredibly delicious! My friends and I enjoyed plates and plates of pasta and pastries. I don't know the names of all the varieties but my goodness I loved each one from the catered event. You can tell they put love and finesse into their pasta. When I visited last month I ordered the lasagna. They also served the table with homemade bread that was to die for (only one slice tho)! I normally don't like lasagna because of ricotta (its a texture thing). Apparently Sardinia doesn't think lasagna needs it either and I'm so happy. It was perfection. The pasta was divine, so so tender and the bolognese was perfectly seasoned. The restaurant itself could use some updating. New flooring, some paint. But I like the porch seating. Will definitely be back and will suggest it to the office when ordering catering. read more

Last July I was invited to Historical Hampden for pizza and ice cream and I loved it, the only thing was that my beautiful well behaved Shih Tzu Yorkie couldn't eat anything from these places, that's when I saw Daniela's I walked in and talk to Stefano and told him that I was looking for few once of grilled chicken for my boy, "look no farther" he said just wait here, after few seconds and gave me a container with a grill chicken breast "for the cucciolo" he said I thank him and asked how much I owed him, he refuses to accept money, I thanked him aging and left December 3, 2019 my very best friend's birthday, she wanted to eat Italian and what a better place than Daniela's? We made the reservation and to our surprise Stefano welcome us and seat us by the window here is the list of items we order We started with Frito Misto, delicious light breaded anchovies and calamari with 3 delicious shrimp My vegetarian daughter order the tomato soup and she loved it We continue with two lasagnas the vegetarian one and the lasagna allá Bolognesa, I can honestly tell you that the vegetarian was better, the bognessa was a bit dry We also order Scialatielli ai frutti di Mare = the bomb, no better words to describe And we also the grilled chicken breast for my four-legged son We also order one tiramisu cappuccino and one strawberry and one made to order cannoli We had a bottle of wine and lattes The service by Stefano and Juan was exceptional The entire evening was just amazing read more

Very disappointed with the portions and prices. The veal in the ossobucco was mostly fat. Any actual meat was super dry and chewy. The potatoes would have accompanied the meal well if the veal wasn't inedible. We also had the lasagna with prosciutto. There was literally one piece of prosciutto on top of a cake of layered lasagna dough. It did taste good but I was expecting more prosciutto and it was a tiny piece lasagna. Just not worth it for the price. We will not be coming back here. read more

I want to give the biggest THANK YOU to master Chef Daniela for making our Covid Valentine's Day so special (and affordable)!! We had the most incredible spread *for under $100*!! Charcuterie, stuffed peppers, bacon stuffed portobello, roasted pesto tomato, caprese salad, two unbelievable pasta dishes (one was a magical mushroom dish that I couldn't get enough of and the other with shrimp), AND two entrees - chicken Marsala and some sort of salmon steak with roasted papers!!! The first two courses (which felt like 10) were so delicious, we barely touched the entrees. My only complaint is that she doesn't do this more often. Valentine's Day is such a frustratingly overpriced "holiday" that we were thinking of skipping but Daniela came through with the best deal I've ever seen!! We actually spent last V day at Daniela's and we're blown away by her cozze marinate. I'm so happy we were able to continue the tradition. Asked to change our initial table to a quieter space, and the wait staff scurried to prep another table for us. My veal was excellent -- a generous portion -- and my soup starter (crabmeat/tomato) arrived at the table piping hot and packed with flavor. We couldn't decide between two varieties of white wine, so the waiter let us taste both before we decided. One of the more reasonably priced restaurants in the area; a great value. Ordered 3 pastas. The bag came with really delicious sliced bread drizzled with olive oil. That was the only good thing from the entire order. The Saccottini di Granchio was clearly microwaved and unseasoned. The Involtini di Pollo Al Funghi Porcini was extremely unappealing. The prosciutto was the same color as hot dogs with similar texture--horrible. The chicken was unseasoned and the brie cheese was no where to be found. The risotto was fine but that barely requires seasoning, and the porcini sauce was surprisingly good. The lasagna was clearly microwaved because it not only smelled like old microwave, it was burnt around the edges (like when you microwave lasagna too long). Had a complex and savory flavor only achieved by broiling. The parmesan, romano and mozzerella came together in such complex and interesting way. The marinara sauce was lightly sweet, freshly acidic, savory and faithfully tomato-y. There were slight chunks. The pasta was super soft and lightly chewy. It's softness beautifully absorbed the sauce. The pasta tasted freshly rolled. This is a flavor that cannot ever be achieved with dry pasta. Happy is an understatement! I drove all the way to Baltimore to try this restaurant, and I am so glad I did. A good friend said we have to try it, so we met there. Spotless, everyone is masked. Cutlery wrapped in plastic, hand sanitizer everywhere. Bathroom is sparkling clean. Food was delicious, sardines are a must have if you like them...best I have had in a long time. Calamari was delicious as well as eggplant wrap with salsa and mozzarella. My entree which I inhaled was seafood in amazing wine sauce with linguine. Really good. The zuppa di Pomodoro is absolutely delicious! We sat outside and the server brought us a heater. It's a great place to eat outside even in the cold because the side walls block a lot of the wind. I also had the grilled veggie appetizer and it was delicious (the eggplant was my favorite part). The only thing I would change is that our server took very long to come and check on us to get the check, so I had to look for him; even after I went to get him, it took him a little while to come (reason for 4 and not 5 stars). read more

Very cute place. The parking in this area is a little challenging since there are lots of shops, bars and restaurants in this area. Stopped in on a whim after the zoo. There was no one in the restaurant but the waiter was very patient. The menu isn't lengthy which is helpful to me. I ordered the mushroom lasagna and my husband ordered the bolgnese lasagna. It came out piping hot and they said the pasta is homemade. We shared both pieces. It wasn't very fancy. No side sides, just bread. It wasn't too overpriced for being in Baltimore. There is only 1 menu for lunch and dinner. It was a very quaint little place. Not sure if I would stop by again since the area had lots of options and we're not down that way too often. We had a number of appetizers. The bersaola was quite delicious but the eggplant appetizer was bitter and otherwise tasteless. The fried mixed seafood was okay although the sardines (which we normally love) were far too salty. Two of us had the mixed seafood pasta with red sauce which was poor. We love Italian food.. I totally love pasta, especially homemade! I was so happy to see that this was a restaurant with Sardinian influences, and it is a quaint place. It was delightful to sit out on the porch and watch the world go by with the recent awesome weather. I ordered a glass of chianti, which was not available, and the server suggested the Marche ross cato instead - it was a decent choice. My husband doesn't drink and was fine with water, but they do not give you ice in your water unless you ask for it. I was ready to try anything on the menu but the lasagna alla bolognese was calling me. My husband was interested in Chicken Parmigiana but it is not offered on the dinner menu. We asked if it could be made, and the server said yes after checking with the kitchen. We asked about pasta coming with it and were told that any of the pastas on the menu could be offered. He chose the fettuccine. He also ordered a side of meatballs. While we waited, the server brought out two warm slices of Italian bread, drizzled with oil - very good with a crunchy crust :) The meatballs arrived with the chicken parm, and then my lasagna. My husband indicated that the meatballs were delicious. The chicken was good, but definitely not the best he's ever had. He liked the pasta and said that the red sauce was good - not too sweet, not to acidic. I tried his fettuccine and found it to be properly cooked with an excellent mouthfeel.. dead on for that one. My lasagna was a tough one though. It arrived in a bowl and the edges of the lasagna were very very very warm, leading me to believe that the entire entrée would be that warm as well. Sadly, the center of the dish was cold - so one might think that this was made earlier in the day and reheated somehow. The pasta was mushy, far past al dente. The flavor was OK but a bit bland. We received the check and my husband commented on the price being so high. We realized that they charged us $13.50 for the chicken parm and then another $8 for the fettuccine. $21.50 for chicken parm seemed a bit much for the dish. We wanted to love this place but I don't think it will be on our return-again list. read more

Then I had the scialatielli pasta with seafood - it was filled with fresh seafood cooked perfectly. My husband tried the chicken breast with prosciutto and Brie cheese. Been here a couple times and I think Daniela's is a hidden gem in Hampden. Pasta is always fresh and good, with big portion sizes. I'm not the biggest pasta or Italian food fan...but this is definitely the best I've ever had. Good enough that I crave it every couple of weeks. This is another one of those cases where everything I've tried has been so delicious, that it's hard to pick a favorite. I've sampled the fettuccini al ragu, vegetable lasagna, cozze marinate, chicken parmesan, saccottini di granchio, paglia e fieno....among others, as well as the cappuccino tiramisu and millefoglie al cioccolato for dessert. What I can say is that the obvious standouts were the cozze marinate (mussels) and the tiramisu. The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful, despite sometimes coming across a language barrier. I don't mind however, since I feel it adds to the overall experience and authenticity of the meal. That, combined with the intimate and cozy atmosphere, makes this one of my favorite eating experiences. read more

Absolutely the best restaurant in Baltimore. Located in trendy Hampden, this place is amazing. We were celebrating a graduation and this was the perfect place. We were stuck in traffic and were a half hour late for our reservation and the servers could not be more gracious. We were very appreciative but that's only the beginning. The restaurant is a renovated home. It's small and cozy with a private dining room and 2 other small rooms with a few tables. It's perfect for groups, a romantic dinner, or a night out with friends. There are no words to describe the food but I will try. We were told that Daniela made the pasta by hand. It was very evident. The gnocchi were so light and fluffy. Each bite was an experience to be savored. We tried 2 different kinds of lasagna - both were delicious. The veal scaloppine with a side of potatoes was amazing. We usually don't order dessert but it was a special occasion. We had a puff pastry with orange that was good but I am still dreaming about the homemade vanilla gelato with the limoncello on top. Maybe I just hit Daniela on an off night. Or ordered the wrong items. My experience doesn't read like most of the other reviews on here. I started with a Caesar salad. Yep... I forgot about the on-going Romaine scare. Daniela's didn't. They served up a plate of under-dressed iceberg with a few croutons and a heavy covering of tasteless shaved cheese. For $12. This was not a good start. You should definitely tell diners that you're going to substitute iceberg. I would've chosen another starter had I known. Friends had recommended the veal, so I ordered that. The menu says it is "double sauteed". It had the textured of being fried. It was very crispy. And overcooked. And dry. And a small portion. And tasted a bit of too-old grease. And was $21.00. It was served with a side of "parsley potatoes", which were actually mashed potatoes with a LOT of lemon juice. And no parsley. The waiter recommended the tiramisu. He was right - it is very good. The service was warm and friendly. I was there with friends/clients, so didn't feel comfortable sending food back. After an impromptu discussion with one of the local business owners we decided to switch dinner destinations and try Daniela's; a place we'd walked by dozens of times but never tried. The décor is cliché, complete with ample green, red, and white accents. Seating is limited to a few small tables inside and a few on the street. On a hazy summer evening we opted to dine al fresco and admittedly the plastic seats outside were comfortable. I ordered the Fettuccine ai Funghi and it arrived within 15 minutes. The presentation could have used a garnish - a stray basil leaf, a bit of parsley, sage, anything to distract from the shades of gray. The pasta was excellent; home made, hand-cut and served al dente. The sauce was flavorful and rich though more of a solid than a liquid. Maybe that was the chef's intent or perhaps it had reduced a bit too long - in any case it had that delicious umami flavor mushrooms bring to a dish. Talking with her son, the maître d', I was left with an impression of a small family business whose recipes go back generations; food cooked with love by a woman whose goal is to make each dish a memory and leave her diners with a contented smile. I'm told she has an extensive culinary repertoire and will oblige custom requests if given advanced notice - an offer I hope to take advantage of in the future. Gnocchi! I have mixed feelings about this place. First, there was a young guy, like late teens early twenties, working the counter. I ordered a meatball for an appetizer and the crab ravioli for my entree. I also ordered a blood orange Pellegrino. Because he had no ice, I had to drink it room temperature. Strike one, but I move on. As I'm waiting for my meatball, I see him dig into the fridge to put some fresh mozzarella or Parmesan cheese on top. He digs in with his bare hands right after he just rubbed his skin, handled other things, etc. Strike 2. I really had to pray over the meal. Please wash your hands before handling any food, even if you have washed them but turn to handling money or anything else with germs. Upon entering, I wondered where the kitchen was. Unfortunately, there isn't one, or not a visible one, so the meatball and crab ravioli entree were microwaved. Strike 3. Both dishes were solid, but come on prepackaged and stuck in a microwave. What did it for me was when the young guy's friend stops by, goes behind the counter, looks in the freezer/other areas to find something to eat, pops a dish on a plate and into the microwave, all without washing the first hand. Strike 4. This is unsanitary to say the least. So friends can now pop into a restaurant and look for "what's to eat" behind the counter? I don't see how this place is 4.5 stars. Needless to say I won't be going back! I can microwave Italian dishes at home for under $5, and I know who's in my kitchen and if he or she has washed his or her hands. The "special dinner" here is as good as it gets. Daniela literally starts making your dinner FROM SCRATCH the moment you arrive. This includes making the pasta from fresh dough, filleting the fish that was alive less than a day ago, and preparing some of the most delicious Italian appetizers and entrees you'll ever have. There is so much food, somewhere around ten different dishes, that even after stuffing ourselves we still had enough to take home for another entire meal. And the price is so reasonable as to be almost unbelievable. You can also go and order off the menu, of course, but if you want a really incredible experience, call the restaurant and ask for Daniela's email address. Then email her and ask her to arrange a "special dinner" for your party. Make sure to make a reservation as our party of 6 took up the entire inside of the restaurant except for one other table of 2. I really wanted this place to be the hidden gem of my dreams, a quick spot to grab yummy homemade pasta carryout on my way home from work. But I wasn't blown away by anything that I tried. The Linguine Verdi al Ragu was a good portion for the price, but it lacked flavor. If you closed your eyes you would not be sure of exactly what you were eating. The Fettuccine al Funghi was pretty good and also well portioned; I would probably get that again if I go back (along with the asparagus lasagna to try which does sound intriguing). The DBF thought that this pasta was too creamy. Is there really such a thing? In both cases with the pastas, the noodles were way overcooked, missing the light toothsome texture that homemade noodles usually have. I had heard that this place cooks everything in advance and then re-heats it. Maybe that is the problem? I would be inclined to believe this is true since the girl behind the counter asked me if I wanted my food heated or not when I asked for carryout. The tiramisu, which looked so promising in the dessert case and stuffed into a carryout container, was full of some kind of liquid in the bottom. Not very appealing although it tasted ok. There was also some weirdness with the visit as a whole. I ordered, and the girl behind the counter called it in (upstairs?) to have it made; after that we just stood in silence. The downstairs is the tiniest postage stamp of a room that I have ever seen and there was really no where to go or anything to look at. Someone then brought my order in from outside after about a 10 minute wait, and he then proceeded to argue with the girl and another patron at a table (possibly another worker, they seemed to know each other) right in front of me about something. My true rating is a 3.5, but since Yelp doesn't let us do half ratings, I'll round up. Atmosphere was decent, typical dining, albeit an odd selection of music.
