Great, slightly upscale, neighborhood bar vibe in Belvedere Square. We come for trivia so we've gotten to try most of their standard menu. They have specialty cocktails and their draft beers which are usually local, seasonal and rotate every week or two. They have a sizable wine list that we have only begun diving into. They have a package goods carry out in the space right next door that also has a very nice selection of interesting stuff. We like Belgians and sours and there's always something we haven't seen, which is great for trying new beers. As well as the beer, they have lots of wine and spirits with a focus on the mid to top shelf brands. read more

We stopped by Grand Cru when we were in Belvedere Square Market on NYE a few days ago. We didn't need anything (we were stocked up for the night already), but I wanted to check it out since it was still new to me (the last time I was at a Belvedere Market, it was a bagel shop!). I was really impressed by the selection and the size of the store. (It's a store and a bar!) Wines (including lots of natural wine options), liquor, beer - they sell a great variety of products - everything you need for a party or a wine night. (I love that you can get everything you need for a party at Belvedere Square Market now - cheese, meet, and fish options for your charcuterie at two of the other stalls and wine from Grand Cru; so convenient!) We ended up leaving with a bottle of wine that we like since our neighborhood shop has been sold out of it recently! I was really impressed that a store of its size has such a great selection! I'd happily return to try some wines at the bar or shop in the store! read more

Conveniently located next to Belvedere Square. Went to grab a couple bottles of wine and Prosecco and didn't realize it was also a bar. If I didn't have bags in my hands from the market, I would've stayed for a glass. They had what I wanted at a reasonable price and provided great customer service. A nice wine shop with a bar (apparently food...but the bartender said they didn't do food on the day I was there...). I found a Hermann Wiemer dry riesling from the Finger Lakes (New York..) which is kind of the gem of the region (for you goobers who never leave Maryland....that's out by Hobart and Cornell University)...the markup was expected at about 20 a bottle, but not off the charts. I like the repurpose of the Beveldere Market where this place sits in...they essentially created a food court with outside seating for the local Roland Park/Guilford/Homeland cupcake eating yuppies and their little toy dogs. Nice spot and ample parking as well. Grand Cru apparently has charceuterie on the bar menu...would like to come here sometime to sit down and smell the roses for a bit here... read more

Driving around the old neighborhood, looking for lunch, we stopped at Belvedere Square. Nothing appealed to us, but at the end of the hallway I spotted a rack full of bottled spirits at Grand Cru. Immediately I started looking for my favorite bourbon. It was there the last visit, but not today...that is until an employee (maybe the manager) asked if he could "help". Bingo Bango. Buffalo Trace. Grand Cru is a unique bar and bottle shop. It carries a wide selection of everything alcoholic and has an accommodating bar. Parking in the area may be a problem as the square is popular during lunch time. If in the vicinity, either for lunch or just driving around, I suggest stopping by Grand Cru. read more

Part wine store and part wine bar. They have a small kitchen for lite bites as be hard to do a full meal. They were out of French Onion Soup the Night I was there. I got the basque bites which tasted mostly of the peppers as they overpowered the anchovy. The ham and cheese was good though on the small side. They should invest in some gloves for the cook as was touching the ready to eat food with his bare hands. Did use tongs for the anchovy and pickled vegetable. Overall food would get a three stars. It is a wine bar and had decent selection by glass and most were affordable as had two chards with more expensive one costing 12. Both my old fashioned cocktail and dogfish stout were good. There beer list if mostly craft but one person in party was able to get a miller lite in a can. Place has decent size bar and a number of tables and high Tops. This is a good place to go after seeing a movie at the senator. Just make sure had filling meal before hand. read more

Came here with some coworkers recently. A very nice wine bar with a decent, but not overwhelming selection of wines by the glass, in addition to about 10 beers on tap and some good-looking cocktails. The waiter was patient with us as we all settled on what we wanted to drink, and those drinks arrived quickly. The bartender was happy to discuss varieties and even let me try a taste of a cider when trying to decide on my next drink. Some of their food looks good, but none of us ordered food here; we just bought different items from throughout the market, and brought them in. Grand Cru is cool with this, and they'll even bus away those items for you. You can splurge on some pricey drinks or get some for a reasonable price. Came here with two friends when visiting Belvedere Square. We ordered at Neopol, but we told them we'd be sitting at Grand Cru and they brought our food over. Drink selections were pretty great, but the food options...not that many. My friend had been here before and had their pretzel before which she recommended. We ordered it, but when it come out differently than she remembered, we talked with the waitress and found out that there was new management. The pretzel was pretty standard. The best part was the buttery outside, but it only came with some mustard. It was well over-priced at $6 and I wouldn't recommend it again. Overall, it's a cool spot, but since I was in the mood for food, not drinks, I'm only giving 2 stars. read more

Service here sucks! I went last night. Adding a star only because they have improved their beer offering. The service here was terrible. The bartender acted indifferent and must have been testing himself to see how few words he could use while interacting with us. In the end he gave us the wrong bill. He came back to us and told us that and said our bill was just a bit more. I asked how much and he said $30. That was 50% more. No apology - this guy needs to find another line of work. I was so looking forward to going back hearing that it changed ownership - This was a total let down. read more

After drinking here for 8 years, its time I provide a review. A friend introduced me to the place, and we started drinking together with spouses and friends. It is a true "third place" where, for many years, everbody knew your name. Unfortunately, the heart and soul of the place, Nelson Carey, died suddenly. Since that moment, the venue has undergone a transformation. This has both good and bad elements. The once quirky yet comprehensive wine selection has gone sideways. The beer has improved with one exception, but beer everywhere is improving. The once top class liquor selection is now quirky. The food has some good moments as well. I do miss the padron peppers. However, the popcorn is great, except there is none tonight and apparently for several months. What, only one place in Maryland makes organic local source popcorn? The flatbreads leave much to be desired, but many of the other selections are supurb. To everyone's benefit, you can order food through the market. While this is good, I still have revery about the past. Only dragons are forever. Eat well, tip well. read more

(05/30/2013) Nice little place in a storefront at the Belvedere Square. The whole market area strives to be upscale, suburban, and chi-chi (while just being inside the City line and an oasis that straddles the historic and low-rent areas. The small plates are designed to complement the selective beer and wine selection. The Alsatian flatbread we tried was a hit; buttery, flaky, paper thin, crisp crust but still with a nice chew, and some salt to it. The "Nature" (bacon, carmelized onion, creme fraiche, fresh cracked black pepper) is a classic combo in this Rhine region. The Pheasant Sausage was juicy and fatty (obviously plenty of pork fat ground into the mix), gamey, well-seasoned, black pepper, with a tart/pungent mustard sauce and savory onion jam. The Pennsylvania Farmed Mushrooms were fresh, plump, sauteed, but unclear what the "house special sauce" was; rather unexciting and bland. The service is a little spacey (just how many times do you have to tell us you forgot our order) earnest. The place doesn't stay open late, probably the suburban clientele has to get home to make sandwiches for the kids and get to work the next day, but they do a bustling business right up to the line. Great place if it's in your neighborhood and conveniently connected to a gourmet market. read more

Camille you are really a genius. You never cease to amaze me! How is it that you've lived walking distance of Belvedere Square for the past 4 years and you've yet to step stiletto into Grand Cru?!?! Preposterous! It's right across the street from one of your favorite restaurants (Crush- American dining in a trendy atmosphere); AND a few feet away from Zen West- a staple for all things tequila. AND TCBY just opened up only a few feet from Egyptian pizza (you know we have a proclivity to all things sweet). You're killing me here! Nonetheless, I appreciate the oak aged tempranillo/merlot. At one time I had been auditioning local watering holes looking for "my place" and I have decided that Grand Cru is not it, for happy hour, for meeting friends or for buying wine. While the place has a nice feel in terms of ambiance, in the times I've been there the crowd tends to be on the older side, as in over 50. I'm not trying to get the party started at my age but there's definitely a sort of "well dressed Grandma/Grandpa with a ponytail" crowd there. But that's not my issue; my issue is they don't really want to sell wine. I went in today (the day before Thanksgiving) looking for a particular brand of wine, Arabella out of South Africa. Huge fan of their Shiraz. Grand Cru had already been on my Do Not Call list because of the lousy service I've gotten there before. The manager wears a flannel shirt all the time and his right-hand man is this sort of sour-puss, sullen guy. The kind of guy who acts like working is somehow beneath him. That was the guy I encountered today. Anyway, the place was busy by 4pm. I go in and get ... no service. No "hello" or "I'll be with you in a moment." Nothing. I roam around the store which is mostly full of drinking customers but I'm not there to drink, I'm there to buy wine and no one seems to be interested in helping me do that. So I stand at the register and wait. The Sullen One looked over at me a few times but helped the people eating and drinking at the bar and that's part of the problem. This place has an identity crisis. Either you sell wine or you sell hot food but you have to do one and do it well. You can't be everything. This place calls itself a wine store but when you have tables and chairs blocking the merchandise, how is anyone supposed to buy the wine? Most people want to look at the labels and the prices, right, or is that just me? Anyway I've been in the store about 10 mins, 5 spent at the register. Sullen comes over acting like I'm interrupting his deeper purpose in life and it's then I realize how loud the music is. Not background music, not smooth jazz. I think it was 80s music and it was loud. I tell Sullen I'm looking to buy a bottle of wine and want to know if they carry a particular kind. He holds his hand up to his ear in the international sign of I Can't Hear You. Now how loud does the music have to be for the dude working behind the counter to not be able to hear a customer wanting to buy something? I repeat what I said and then said I wanted a shiraz. He heard "syrah" which is no biggie because they're from the same grape but he copped an attitude with me. While still doing the I Can't Hear You move he says "Is is Shiraz or Syrah because there is a difference. One is from France." Then he said they didn't carry that brand, still doing the I Can't Hear You. Then how come you can give me 'tude if you can't hear me? I say "Well where is your section of SHIRAZ?" and honestly he looked like he didn't know. Then he said "Somewhere back there but hey, I'm sorry but I'm kinda busy right now so I don't have time to show you." That's right: the guy at the wine store doesn't have time to sell me a bottle of wine. That's when I walked out the door and they will never see me again. One positive: I found a FANTASTIC wine store where I live in Owings Mills. The Wine Loft sells WINE and nothing else. The guy working there was really helpful and although they didn't have Arabella either, he helped me pick out a nice Shiraz and a Riesling and neither broke the bank. I discovered this place a couple of weeks ago, and I've already been back 4 times! Being a big but picky wine drinker, I've been able to pick out wines that I absolutely love. They have a huge selection of wines, and the staff will always be able to help you pick out something you like. Everyone who works here is very friendly. The food is great, small amounts but very flavorful. The best value, I think, are the $9 flatbread/pizza-like dishes. The venison with the blueberry glaze is so unique and so delicious, I've never had anything like it before. You can also order a bottle of wine and pay the $5 corkage fee, which is a great deal, rather than ordering by the glass. Outside seating is available, but they go very quickly. It's definitely hard to grab one of those seats because when there's alcohol involved, people tend to dawdle for hours on end. All in all, this is definitely one of my favorite places to go. The atmosphere is great! UPDATED: Oh gosh. Came back here after Nelson Carey passed and new owner J.C. Unitas III took over. The interior is redone. Not sure if the new décor is entirely responsible for the atmosphere, but it definitely has a different feeling when you step in. The flatbread, one of the foods I used to religiously order, is now a thick doughy pie with random cheeses scattered here and there. Really, probably one of the worst flatbread / pizza I have ever had. The wine list is okay, but their menu is pretty sparse and definitely doesn't hold up to the old menu. Way overpriced for the quality. I haven't been back since. I may try it again when they've had time to settle in after a year or so, but not looking forward to coming back here at all. It's a shame, because it used to be my absolute favorite wine bar in Baltimore - but now it looks like I'll have to find another one. read more

So sad to see what has happened to Grand Cru. This used to be one of my favorite parts of the neighborhood, and it's barely a shadow of its former self. Not only has the wine selection seem to have shrunk by half, but the wine that remains is a smattering of over priced table wine, with a handful of wineries of note thrown in. Not even necessarily good wineries, just ones people would recognize. I'm a wine person through and through and before Spike gutted the shelves not only could I find familiar bottles I was fond of, but pricier unknown bottles to experiment with. The staff is still super friendly and helpful, but it's also clear that the education on wine and beer is being neglected. Wine is not intuitive so I don't fault them for it, but if you're going to have a wine bar invest in your staffs knowledge in some structured way. It's lucky that Wells is just a short drive away, because there's seemingly no other hope of finding a decent wine selection in the neighborhood. read more

Grand Cru has re-opened with a new owner and look, but the same charm. We went in for a few drinks to celebrate a friends birthday. They have a decent happy hour - three or so wines, a beer, and a daily punch for $6. I chose this light and crisp Vinho Verde from Portugal. It was on happy hour, but still reasonably priced off of happy hour. I really liked this wine. Even if you don't like anything on the menu by the glass, you can pick one of their many many bottles varying in price from $12 to over $50. That is one of my favorite part of this place. Plus, the folks behind the bar have a decent wine knowledge, so feel free to ask all your questions. They have a limited menu right now, everything was tempting. We went with the Parts and Labor meats with a companion cheese plate. Oh my, I love a cheese and charcuterie plate. They also have a bunch of oysters. We opted for the roasted ones that were baked and covered with a little cheese. They reminded me of the oysters I had in New Orleans. I feel sad that I ate everything too quickly and didn't take the pictures. If you get to Grand Cru before 8pm, you can also have food from Belvedere Market. After our snacks we shared a few more things from the Market: ramen with carrot and zucchini noodles and an italian sammich with steak, peppers and provolone. read more

This is on of my favorite go to locations for Friday happy hour. They have a great selection of wines and mixed drinks, it is a little on the pricer side, but in this area the alternative is a bunch of dingy college bars. They have a nice selection of mixed drinks and 6 solid rotating beers. One is from Maryland, one is regional, a few from Europe and then something off the wall and strange.. Never have I been in here and have tried all the beers, always something new to try. I normally opt for some of the very reasonably priced glasses of wine, or a manhattan. They make a delicious manhattan. The crowd is slightly older but that is a nice change of pace, no one is in a rush and they are always in a super chill laid back mood. One day the Mayor even stopped in, btw, she is even prettier in person! One cool thing to note re: food is that you can order and pay for food in any of the other market "food shops" inside the attached market and they will bring it to your table in Grand Cru. You know how sometimes you're just in the mood to go out on Monday, and so many restaurants are closed? Do yourself a favor and go to Grand Cru! One of the best things about it is that it's part of the Belvedere Market complex, which is filled with fantastic little food stands selling Italian cuisine, smoked fish, cheese, produce, bread, imported oils and other deliciousness. You can browse around and pick up everything you need for a last-minute dinner party or just eat there. Or, you can order what you like and have them bring it to Grand Cru while you sample their large selection of wine and beer. Grand Cru serves wine by the glass, half glass, and bottle. They also serve cheese and charcuterie plates. You can sit there for hours just talking with friends, and with all the choices, everyone's guaranteed to find something they like. It's definitely worth the trip if you're outside of North Baltimore. You can make an afternoon of it with all the cute boutiques on the block, and parking is plentiful! read more

Went to this wine bar for the first time recently after having been a regular patron of Belvedere Square. I was very impressed by the wine menu and the bar snacks. I didn't order full food entrees (although those that went by near me looked very good!), but spent a few bucks on fresh popcorn and a cheese board. Very yummy! The bar staff was lovely and I will definitely be returning! For those not familiar with Belvedere Square, this wine bar is located inside the market but does stay open later than the market itself. read more

I've been here twice, and the second trip was worse than the first, so I'm not terribly interested in coming back. First off, this place is a bit of a combo. You can sit down and order food and drink, but it's also a takeout place for beer, wine, and liquor. About half of the available seating is right up against where the takeout options are located. So if you come to this location to get something to take home and its full of patrons, you have to awkwardly squeeze past people sitting there eating to get at what you want. And on that note, you'd have to know exactly what you want, because if people are seated at those tables, you don't have room to actually browse what Grand Cru has for sale. Beyond that, the service definitely lacks unless you know the person working at any given time. I was at the far end of the room recently and was able to see exactly what kind of service everyone was getting, and it was painfully obvious there's a double standard here. I actually got tired of waiting for our order to be taken, so I went up to the bar and ordered there. For the inflated prices these guys charge, this is ridiculous. When I ordered the sliders for myself (two sliders for $8 btw), I asked for them to be cooked medium. The server (who couldn't be bothered to come to our table to take our order mind you) said that they recommend the sliders be cooked medium rare. I said that was fine. When I got the sliders, they were borderline well done. I look forward to trying some of the other options at Belvedere Square, but Grand Cru is not a place I see myself going back to. Providing quality service to EVERYONE who walks through their doors isn't something they seem very concerned with sadly. read more

I used to love this place and at times I still do but today was a different story. I am a regular here for years since it is the neighborhood bar and quite lovely even for the price. Today I went in to ask about something and had my son with me. The way I was treated was astounding, first being told not hello but "I don't serve kids at the bar" when it is a family friendly place and my son was certainly not ordering. Then it was "Oh is this retail then?" and not understanding the question I simply stared at him puzzled. When I told him I wanted to order a glass of wine and that I also had a question he answered my question rudely, turned around and whispered something to his friend before taking my order in a condescending manner. This experience at one of my favorite places left a horrible taste in my mouth and the feeling of not wanting to go back. This bartender works all the time and he has at times been a bit rude to me but not this bad before and I hope it never happens again. I tried to find contact information to write something to the owner but there is none so I guess this will have to do. I hope you read this and rethink your customer service. Thank you. read more
