Dang, am I glad I tried this place. Haha. I started with a nice refreshing glass of the Viet lemonade. That drink knocked my socks off. I really like lemonade but this one was sweeter and not as tangy as most and very delicious. We then had an order of the egg rolls which were crispy and warm and bursting with flavor. They didn't even need the accompanying dipping sauce but it did enhance the flavor in a very nice way when I dipped one of my pieces into it. For our entrees we had a bowl of pho and split a grilled pork bahn mi. The pho was phenomenal and that bahn mi was out of this world. I'm a big fan of Pho. Coming from living in Los Angeles with so many Vietnamese choices, and so relatively few here. This is definitely a dive worth checking out. The menu selection is not as vast as Viet Garden, but it's less expensive and the Egg and Rice Noodle dishes are very tasty. I've had both Pork and Beef flavored Pho. They have two sizes, small ($6.50??) and large with a price difference of about $.50 or $.75. The small bowl is enough for most people and I'm a big guy. My wife and I judge the quality of a Vietnamese restaurant by their shrimp spring rolls. These are very good here. They come in two sizes, small (2) or large (4). If you don't specify they'll bring you the large by default and it comes with a deep little dish of peanut sauce. They also have an iced tea that's excellent, it's Lotus and Jasmine mixed together. The manager knew I liked it so much she gave me a bigger cup to take with me. The decor isn't very exciting though, like it was trapped in the 70's and never left. It's a simple cafe like setting with tables and chairs and a drab beige setting. The tables have the usual suspects adorning the tables (Rooster Sauce, Oyster Sauce, hot pepper sauce, etc). I wouldn't exactly call this romantic but it was quiet. This place is like finding Anthony's Italian Deli, if you're willing to go there, then going here shouldn't be an issue. The shopping center itself is a total dive. Again coming from SoCal, this place fits right at home. The shopping center looks like it was never updated, ever and the parking isn't much better. If you're adventurous and are willing to try out new and different places, this is a good place to get a lunch or dinner for a fair price that will please your Pho cravings. read more

It was a crowded Sunday when we waited anxiously for a table. I was starving so I knew I'd be forgiving for the wait and in effect the food. Unfortunately on this visit- the food took so long, the service so confused and the flavors so lacking that I submit to you, oh wondrous Yelpers, this 2 star review. The girl that took our order didn't write anything down so they forgot 2 items. Then the food started arriving. Not all together mind you- so that my dining companions were done by the time my bowl arrived. Honestly I wouldn't care if the food was up to snuff- but it wasn't- let me explain in the hopes they read this. The seafood crepe was a joke. This is supposed to a crispy, slightly gooey shell filled studded with pork and shrimp, filled perhaps with beansprouts. Ya know? We've all had a good one. This was an oily soggy mess and COMPLETELY raw in the middle. I knew they were backed up so didn't bother sending it back. Wife's pho arrived and it's all about the broth. This broth? S-W-E-E-T. Like sugar bomb sweet and no discernible spices (i'm looking at you star anise, clove, cinnamon etc.) They were no where to be found. They left out the brisket and gave double tripe (not the order) so there was that too. Friend's chicken pho was ok he said- but tough pieces of chicken breast made it laborious. The only highlight was mine- the bun bo hue. This was pretty spot on broth wise- spicy bright aromatic but the meat within was tough and sinewy- and where's my pork knuckle? Great place to dine in to eat some Vietnamese food. Atmosphere is really relaxing with the sounds of a water fountain dripping or and chill type music. I've eaten the pho here and it's great, but I'm more of a rice person so I normally get the grilled chicken or pork with rice and everything like eggs veggies shredded pork and such. I believe it's family owned so the staff is all family members. So if it gets busy you will have to wait a little bit, but it's not longer than most places like a chili's or something. The price is okay, but it's not something I could do everyday. I spend roughly 40 dollars on 2 meals 2 drinks and 1 appetizer. There are not great options for Vietnamese food in Baton Rouge. At least in my opinion. It's either too pricey for what it is, or just not up to moms cooking. But who can beat Mom's cooking, am i right? Dang's is not exactly in a premiere location, but i liked the food and it didn't necessarily disappoint. We got the spring rolls, the duck appetizer, pho Dac biet, and a banh mi dac biet as well. I have to say i wasn't a fan of the duck, and i didn't like how much lettuce was in the spring rolls - too much IMO. The pho, however, was delicious. I went in on a cold night so it was even more perfect! The flavors were on point, and they weren't stingy with meats. The banh mi was good flavor wise, but i could tell it wasn't Dong Phuong bread. Can't blame them for not using Dong Phuong bread, though Overall, i would technically give it 3 1/2 stars because there were a few things i didn't care for. However, with the service and the prices, i honestly can't complain. With everything that we ordered including a freshly squeezed lemonade, and a Diet Coke, our entire meal was right under $50! Stumbled on this place when I was checking out the various Asian Markets in the area. Being the first time I've been here, I tried several items on the menu. The waitress probably thought I was crazy ordering so much. The Pho was great. I ordered this egg, shrimp, Beansprout - crepe (an appetizer) It was pretty large. When you dip it in the fish sauce, add the picked carrots, Lettuce, and cucumber, it tastes really good. Also got the Pork skewer, Spring roll with Pork and Shrimp, and Beef wrapped in this green leaf (they were all appetizers). The beef wrapped thing, not worth it. The Spring roll with the dipping sauce was good, not spectacular, But one of the better ones I've had, but could still use some work. The pork skewer was decent, but you need to dip it in the fish sauce to make it good. I have mixed reviews on the Lemonade, Tried both the Regular and Soda version. I've read the other reviews. I guess it's just a matter of taste. Others seem to have loved it. Personally, it was too sweet for me. I would prefer it just slightly more tart, to make it refreshing. So, the appetizers, I'd rank the place as a 3 star, the Pho was really good, so a 5 star. Service was Great. All the veggies were really fresh. The place looks run down and kind of sketchy (as can be expected for most authentic viet restaurants in Baton Rouge. (different standards and emphasis on cleanliness than we learn to expect of our normal restaurants.... Great pho here, not super oily like other places! The vermicelli is hot not cold and makes it more satisfying to eat. I must start out with saying I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! It is true Vietnamese food!!! Everything is always served hot a fresh. The egg rolls are very good. I always have the hardest time deciding on what to get! The combination pho is so good and I always ask for extra meatballs. The Vietnamese crepe with shrimp is always my go to and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Just ask for extra lettuce so you have enough to wrap each bite in it (just a mere suggestion). The vermicelli is my newest love along with the Vietnamese salad. My words fall short trying to describe everything. I would suggest finding a friend that likes Vietnamese food as well and bring them here. Ask for a large table and order a few things to try and you won't be disappointed. We ordered 3 orders of pork/shrimp spring rolls, 3 BUN BO HUE, 2 PHO, along with 1 boba Milk tea & 2 Thai teas, and 2 Dr Peppers. It cost $93!!!! I believed they overcharged us! First of all, the place looks run down but we wanted to try the food anyway. The waiter was a little slow but we understand he may be a newbie. He put in a wrong order, instead of the milk tea he came out with green milk tea. We corrected him so he went back and got yelled at by the guy in the back. Secondly, BUN BO HUE isn't the real authentic deal; they do not come with gio heo or huyet so if you guys are coming here for that, this is NOT the place. What bun bo hue don't come with it?! And lastly, the boba drinks were horrible. It didn't taste like any tea flavors at all. It was more like a dessert che. Me and my wife moved from Houston and were a bit disappointed to learn there were not many places to get pho. My wife loves pho and during one of her pregnant cravings, I searched on yelp for a place to get Vietnamese noodles in Baton Rouge. My expectations were not that high; we were just looking for anything to help curb the need... We found Dang's Restaurant. Wow! Though not the fanciest looking establishment, my wife and I were very curious. My wife having grown up in Dallas area and I in southern California, we knew that the best places for pho are hidden gems. And a hidden gem this was. We started off with some shrimp spring rolls (non-fried type), which came with your standard peanut sauce with chopped peanuts. This sauce had some pickled daikon radish and carrots on top that added some crunch and a contrasting acidity to the sweet sauce. The spring rolls had a bit of fried shallots inside that added a nice crunch and a bit of savoriness to it all. The wait staff was very attentive and had timed the orders so that the our pho arrived right when we were done with those delightful starters. We ordered the combination beef pho. The rare beef actually came out mostly rare, to our surprise. We have been to too many places where it comes out overcooked. Before adding the usual extras that come with, i.e. lime, thai basil, or mung beans sprouts, we tasted the soup. Amazing!!! Not too salty as you find in some places, just right. It lends itself greatly to the extras that are served in it, the beef, meatballs, etc. that build layers on top of that great soup. Do not kill the great soup by pouring Hoisin or Sriracha directly into it. If you like it hot, use the Jalepenos. Use the sauce dish they give you for the Hoisin sauce and Sriracha. Dip your meats. I am Asian, but not Vietnamese, so I may not be the best judge of pho, but I love this place. Also, it is fairly inexpensive, so it is definitely worth trying. I love banh mi and so excited that Baton Rouge has banh mi! And it's awesome! Don't be deterred by the basic furnishings and simple interior. Service is friendly. It looks like a family run spot and while we were there, workers were taking breaks and enjoying what looked to be tasty rice and meat dishes. I only had banh mi (similar to a po boy or sub on french bread) and tried both the combo at $2.50, which comes with a variety of pork including bbq pork, meatball, and the typical spam-like meat, and the grilled seasoned pork at $3.00, which is sort of like sausage. Bread was warm and perfectly crispy. It is what a banh mi is supposed to be - a simple, tasty sandwich with a mix of spiciness, saltiness, and tang on warm soft crunchy bread. Definitely go for the combo which is stuffed with more meat and ask for extra jalapeños and pickled veggies. You can't beat this at $2.50 so treat yourself and get two and save one for later! I don't have a lot of experience eating Vietnamese in the Baton Rouge area, but as far as the pho is concerned- this place is delicious! The grilled pork bun was also very good. Although they have good bread on the Bahn Mi, I've had better elsewhere- I prefer when there's aioli and I'm not a fan of the Vietnamese spam. The lemonade is a glass of limey-heaven that is a must. Recently the restaurant changed hands but the song remains the same - top of the line Vietnamese Pho! The new owners haven't changed the decor much, except to remove the huge television that used to play Vietnamese music videos (not much of a loss since now you can actually have a conversation without yelling). The new staff speak fluent English and you can even ask about off menu Vietnamese items if you want to explore the depth and breadth of this wonferful country's food. Located in an old strip mall filled with vietnamese shops and the largest Viet grocery store, it's worth the trip way out to the East end of Florida Blvd! This might just be my new favorite spot! A hidden gem for sure! Took my fiance out for his birthday dinner and it was our first time here I'll refer to him as my boy in this review as I do my other reviews if you've read them.. The two ladies who were working were so kind and helpful. I had the spring rolls with tofu to start and they were perfect. (I'm very picky about my tofu) You can tell the spring rolls were fresh and most likely made to order. My boy ordered a chicken Bahn Mi as his appetizer and was delighted by the flavor and freshness. I had Pad Thia for my dinner order. This was the best I've had in baton rouge and a close second to one of my favorites back home. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the sauce ration was on point. Its a bummer when places don't give enough and things get dry and i'm not a fan when there is too much. Food shouldn't be swimming in sauce.. because then its soup. anyway thanks for getting the ratio perfect! My boy ordered extra large Pho rare eye round and meatballs. He enjoyed everything but the meatballs. He said he just wasn't a fan of them but to anyone else they were probably great it was more of a texture to him not the flavor.
