Hot wings
Jennifer H.

We were in the moods for wings after a nice beach day and we ended up finding the Williamburg location only to get there and find out it's not a actual store front but a street vendor. A street vendor that was not there that day either. We tried placing the order over the phone and were told only online orders can be made. It's no wonder why we couldn't place the order in seamless. Eventually after all that hassle we ended up at the 1st Avenue location in the city. Overall they had a nice outdoor setup. The lady the register walked my order out when it was ready. The wings were good a little on the dry side but next time I will make sure to request more sauce.

Boneless buffalo wings

Dan and Johns is my favorite wing stop in smorgasbord. I always get the boneless buffalo wings with blue cheese (8 breaded wings) no matter which flavor wing you get, you won't be disappointed. I've been visiting them in Brooklyn for years.

So this Saturday, I decided to make up for lost time and finally check out Smorgasburg, to see what all the fuss is about. (Quick tip: arrive between 11 and noon if you don't want to literally rub shoulders with everyone -- this food market is for real). Unfortunately, you can't hit up all the stalls in one day (unless you boast a bottomless gut and wallet), but that's a great reason to come back. Several stalls impressed, but this one in particular I thought was pretty genius. Dan and John, proprietors of the eponymous new street food venture, are super-friendly dudes. They were busy filling poultry orders, but I got a chance to chat with the lovely ladies they had dishing the wings. These girls definitely stood out as the friendliest and most engaging tent hosts of the afternoon, and I got a chance to learn a bit about their avian cookery. Dan and John are Buffalo natives who saw a gaping hole in the NYC street/food truck scene: real-deal Buffalo wings! And it occurs to me that they are abso-freaking-lutely right! Between Cambodian curry and Salvadoran papusas, how has no one thought to meet a very deep American demand for hot wings??? My friends and I sampled the goods--about 4 jumbo wings and some requisite celery (pass, but you might be a stalk man or woman) per order. And you get to dip them in Rootie's blue cheese, which they also have for sale at the table. The wings come in several grades of caliente, but I recommend the hot or "infernal" if you want to feel like a champ. The BBQ version is finger-licking good as well. They weren't cheap, but on par with the other offerings at Smorgasburg. Definitely bigger than the wings you're liable to find on any given Sunday at a New York City sports bar, and tastier than what I've had at Blondie's, Wildwood, and Atomic Wings. They're only there on Saturdays, so make sure to seek it out and squeeze it in between sessions of beer cheese, dry ramen, and tiny country pies. And, if you linger long enough, you might see Touré (from MSNBC) slurping down wings. I wonder how many celebs I missed (thanks, SO, for the eagle eyes).

Smorgasburg is my weakness and so is Dan and John's. I always order the 5 piece boneless buffalo at Smorgasburg and then get 20 wings to go simply because it's too messy and I like to put my fat girl eating pants on and house these solo on a Saturday night while binging on HGTV.

First try for this buffalo girl at the new Coney Island outpost. Really friendly guys working. Weren't sure what part of B'lo Dan and John are from ...... Wings are some of the best representing in NYC I've had yet but needs a better blue cheese ( thicker with more chunks ) Thanks for your hospitality

Without doubt, the best wings I have ever had in the city! These wings are super big and juicy! Dan and John pick these well! They offer different sauces to bathe these in right after being deep fried and even though you can get 7 wings for $9, these wings are huge!! like seriously big! (Ok, wait, don't expect bowling ball sizes chicken wings either, but pretty big for wings!) I was able to try these out while at Smorgasburg in Brooklyn and the actual owners were cooking and taking the orders. They had their Texas look on point and a southern charm that made you feel that they really were enjoying what they were doing. I really wish I was eating some more right now. If I remember well, I believe they only have two locations at the moment and might be looking to expand into the city soon (if not already). I will be looking forward to getting my hand on more of these. Quick suggestions... Don't be finicky about getting dirty, they are hot wings, it is supposed to happen, also, the hot sauce is not really hot (I'm not mad though cause they told me it really wasn't hot at all) So if you really like a kick, ask for inferno sauce! :)

Being Buffalo born-and-raised this is the closest thing to home yet. After living here a year I realized that NYC doesn't really have buffalo wing game at all - maybe my expectations were too high coming from the real deal upstate. Cue Dan and John's Wings - giving me some hope that there are some people who can do it right in this city. The blue cheese is sweet and the wings have that perfect texture that's hard to find outside Buffalo's city limits. I tried them at their Coney Island location and needless to say - I'll be back once a week!

Best wings ever! Just like we do it in Buffalo. There is no better place in NYC or Brooklyn to get your wings.

Absolutely the best wings. The super hot ones are very hot! Leave your lips stinging! Get the hot ones. They're less intense!

Instead, walk 10-15 minutes south on Kissena Blvd and you will find a group of street vendors gathering nightly on the sidewalk right in front of Gold City Supermarket. On a beautiful night, you'll find many people camping out on the ledge of the supermarket parking lot, or even putting out picnic blankets, while enjoying various street foods they can find at this great little "food fest". The street vendors are from different regions of China and serves all sorts of yummy goodies. You can find lots of fried items, soup noodles, grilled skewers, marinated meats and veggies, desserts, etc. One of my favorite stalls is the vendor selling hand torn shredded chicken ($25 each), which they dress up in seasoning and spices. They use an older chicken that has a firmer texture that won't fall apart when tearing the meat. The flavor is wonderful and absolutely addictive. They even give you a frequent buyer card that gets you a free chicken when you reached six purchases. The same stall also sells marinated items that are quite good. You are allowed to mix and match as long as they have the same price point. Another stall I would recommend is the stinky tofu stall. There are often more than one, but I like the one with the longest table space only dedicated to this single product, often in the middle of the block. If you have never tried this delicacy, close your nose and give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised. Other stands that are popular include the BBQ grilled meats over charcoal, where you can get $2-3 skewers of lamb, beef, chicken wings, and whole lot more. Also, if you see the man grilling whole squids, his stuff is quite tasty too. Bottom line, it's a fun evening hanging out with your friends and snacking on various yummy bites. Be brave and try something new. Though there are few English signs, just order what looks good. Find a day with nice weather and check it out soon.

While it appears as "Young Xinjiang" online, the owners have confirmed this cart is nameless despite what the rest of the internet says. (#1) Open until 1A.M nightly, they have steadily maintained one of the best street food options in the Chinatown vicinity. Gone are the days where the skewers were $1. Thanks largely to food inflation, each one now varies between $2.00 and $4. While it's a steep increase, the meats have remained excellent in quality and in today's economy would be considered a very good deal. Their most popular options include lamb and beef, both aptly at $3 each. The meats are grilled over charcoal, and make for an excellent snack at any time. Chili powder is highly recommended for a small kick but delicious finish. Duck skin ($3) is a sleeper pick, and the beef tendon ($2.50) is excellent and is their most tender choice. Squid ($3.50) can be incredible if grilled well, and I would highly recommend avoiding the Italian sausage ($4) completely. Vegetarian options such as eggplant, king oyster mushroom, corn, or rice cake feel a bit overpriced at nearly $3 each. As per usual, everything is cash only. Given the price point, friendly service, and high quality meats, this nameless cart (#2) is an excellent option for a late night goers and carnivore lovers. Given the lack of competition at this point, I sincerely hope they can continue to keep it up. __________ (#1) Perhaps accidentally mixed with another competing cart? We got beef, pork, and lamb skewers for $8.50 total which was so worth it. You can choose spicy or non spicy and we went spicy. The beef was the most average of the three, the lamb was better, and the pork was delicious. If you are in the area definitely give this place a try!
