Best Mushroom Swiss Burger, maybe ever! Friendly service, super welcoming. I may never go anywhere else for a Burger.

Have been thinking about giving Dale's a try for awhile. Wife had a hankering for onion rings and Yelp sent us there. The onion rings are fantastic, a must get every time. We each got burgers. Big, juicy pink burgers. A bit too juicy as the bun/bread on each of our burgers sogged out halfway through eating them. The menu said buns were toasted but they were no match for the juices released by the massive 1/2 pound patties. Hard to complain, though, based on how good the burger was. Mine had mushrooms and Swiss. Definitely not canned mushrooms, as they still had texture and were not rubbery. Kid had 4 Alarm with jalapeno bacon and fresh jalapenos, just the right amount of kick for him. Patty melt for the wife, really tasty pumpernickel bread. $1.75 for unsweet tea, good deal. $1.75 for the kid's can of pop, not good deal. Good portion control, though. Now this is real deal down-home country cooking! First off it's tucked away in a quiet town not far off of I-35. A nice scenic drive if you go during sunset. This place reminds me of the country lunch/dinner joints I frequented in East Texas as a kid. We went on rib night (Thursday) as ribs are a fave. After reading the dinner menu board, as well well as other selections from the printed menu, my girlfriend and I decided on homemade chips/salsa for the appetizer and then split the 3 meat plate for the entree. Our waitress (Stacy) kindly said that the pulled pork was "a little dry this evening" which we kindly thanked her for. We asked if we could double-up on another meat and she said, "of course darlin', your choice!" We went with ribs-ribs- jalapeno/cheese sausage and collard greens and mashed taters for the 2 sides. The ribs were wonderful! I normally am not a fan of basting sauce, but theirs is light and not overpowering. It adds to the meat and not a distraction. The sausage is ground and prepared on-site with just the right amount of smokey/spicy flavor. The taters are also peeled/mashed on-site with butter/pepper for a great taste! The collard greens (recommended by Stacy) were pretty much the best restaurant greens I've had to date, with a small amount of heat added. For sure fresh, not frozen or canned. The addition of tasty, fluffy, "made on-site" yeast rolls helped make the plate more than enough food for two. Since the food was so damn good we decide to have a dessert for the great selections available. We asked about the blackberry cobbler and while Stacy sang it's praises, she said to try the house specialty German Apple Cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel. WOW! Again, the cake is homemade with fresh apples peeled there. Just the right amount of spices and not too sweet made for a "must have" treat to be appreciated. I have been reading about this place for several years and always wanted to give it a try. Well, today we happened to be a few miles from Walburg, so we decided to check it out. I ordered their standard burger and added American cheese, bacon and jalapeños and had Texas toothpicks (fried strips of onions and jalapeños) as my side. My wife ordered the same burger with American cheese and Texas toothpicks. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed sitting there and looking at the various beer signs and photos on the walls. We were also treated to one of the most intense thunderstorms I have seen in a while, so we watched the sideways rain, lightning and small hail as we waited for our food. Once the food came out, we were in awe at the size of the burgers and the quantity of the sides. You better wear some elastic waist pants if you plan in visiting this place! The burgers were up there with the best I have ever had -perfectly seasoned, 1/2 pound, thick, tasty patties that were cooked a perfect medium with a warm pink center and lots of juice. The buns were also quite nice and did a great job of soaking up all of that delicious meat juice. The Texas toothpicks were spot-on too, and the order was so big that one order would easily be enough for 2 people. We had iced tea to drink......iced tea in 32 oz plastic tumblers. That alone is worth an extra star in my book. And at 1.65, the deal of the century. As full as I was, I had to treat myself to some dessert. It was hard to choose between the bread pudding, various cobblers, and German Apple cake, but I consider myself a bread pudding connoisseur, so I had to go with the bread pudding. The generous portion was delivered to the table slathered with a vanilla custard. The consistency was dense and moist - just like bread pudding is supposed to be. It had just the right amount of sweetness and would really be nice with a cup of coffee. We will definitely make it back to Dale's in the near future. The burgers were exceptional, but they had a lot of other really great sounding items on the menu that I can't wait to try! Great place. We were camping in Georgetown and wanted to find a place to eat off the broken path. I had the catfish special and my boyfriend had a burger. Both were cooked perfectly. We were happy and full when we left. Our waitress was kind and kept our drinks filled. They have a huge outdoor patio area for live music on the weekends. We were a party of fifteen, we all ordered full menus items. And assorted drinks. Our little blonde waitress, sorry didn't get her name was awesome. She got everything correct, and delivered in a timely manner. The food was wonderful. Delicious. Huge portions. I had stuffed schnitzel, 2 patty's stuffed with bacon Swiss and mushrooms. Holy moly. My sides were collards and black eyed peas. The peas were excellent but I really would have loved to have ordered just collards. Yes they were that good. Not everyone can make good collards. Came out here with co-workers for our lunch break. I was told they had good burgers. That was not a lie. We got there and took a seat. We were immediately greeted by our waitress and our drink order was taken. When our drinks came out i realized they did not have fountain drinks. To me that's a big deal because i like my soda. Shortly after our orders were taken and the waitress left to put them in. After that we never saw our waitress again, until we waited forever for our food she finally came back with our meals. I order the baja burger, avacado,bacon, meat cheese, veggies. It was delicious, but as i stated no fountain drink so i had to take small sips of my soda so as to not have to buy another one. Still we saw very little of our waitress even though one of my buddies was screaming "mam" at one of them that completely ignored him. Here are the reasons: 1 Beer Garden: The beer garden is large, cool and shadey with plenty of tables and oak trees.Nightime is particularly beautiful since you can see stars that you normally could not see due to encroaching city lights.Your in the country, man! 2. Food: The Walburger is their top food item. The use freshly ground beef and you have to actually use 2 hands to lift it. Now if they had fresh-cut fries, that would be a great combination. 3. Entertainment: They have an enclosed dance hall and an outdoor stage area. We usually go on Thursday night when they host Karoake.I believe they have live bands on Fri. and Sat. Rotel and the Tomatoes played there not too long ago. 4. Family Environment: The whole atmosphere is very family- oriented with little kids playing and sometimes singing Karoake. You have a cool combination of grandparents, farmers and college students from Southwestern laughing and having some brewskis. It is also a dog-friendly place. Updated review: Good burgers - Hand pressed and yummy. Fries were frozen style so they were just okay. The peach cobbler was good and the bread pudding was okay. It wasn't warm at all. The problem was that it took 25 minutes to get our appetizer and 45 minutes after ordering to get our food. We got there at 7 and didn't get our main entrees until 8. Apparently they have more tables than the kitchen can keep up with the orders and people have to wait a long time on Friday and Sat nights to get their food. If you come to drink and listen to the band, maybe that's okay, but for a family with hungry teens, it is just too long. We won't be back. read more

For an appetizer we got chips and salsa. The salsa was good, the best? Nah but it did it's job. I ordered the fried shrimp with french fries and broccoli. The shrimp were a good size, not too big, not too small. The french fries were pretty good and the cocktail sauce was good as well. Their water didn't taste very good so I got a soda (which they serve in cans). For dessert we got blackberry cobbler, apple cake and bread pudding. All of them were really good. We went here when they were having their St. Patricks day party. We got there pretty early (thank god) because about 30 minutes later the place was packed! Burgers were mouthwatering, and the texas toothpicks were delish! Waitress was very awesome and down to earth. The music was good so we sat outside for a while. This is a wonderful find. By all means, if you are on I-35 just north of Georgetown, it is worth the 4 miles to Walburg to go to Dale's, especially if you can go in the evening on a summer weekend and listen to some live music under the big starry Texas sky. The fried catfish was the best we have ever had. We had enough to take home and it is definitely enough for 2 people, even 2 huge eaters. I had chicken fingers and they were so crispy, the cream gravy was very good, new potatoes tasted fresh and the steamed broccoli was perfect, not soggy at all. Those cooks really know what they are doing. Even the roll was top notch. Service was impeccable, atmosphere is Texas all the way without all the kitsch. Best of all is the outdoor entertainment. There is even a wedding venue, a banquet hall, and a pre 4th of July fireworks show (check the website for the date). Dale is a heck of a guy, pure Texas, born and bred in East Texas and he truly wants for his customers to have a wonderful time. He is involved with every aspect of the establishment as I saw him all over the place - at the inside dining where he came to introduce himself because he heard we were new. He was outside watching the band and went to make announcements during a band break. He went back inside to check on the diner. The music is free and is typically bands who just like to play music. Horrible service, actually just non-existent. Just don't waste your time, they already wasted ours. As locals, I have been to Dale's numerous times, so coming back home from college for a weekend trip I was excited about going back. I only have a star because I had to in order to leave my scathing review. We walk in and let the waitress know we'd like to sit outside. She acknowledged that with an "Okay" and not another word. We sit outside for 20 minutes and no one comes out except two teeny boppers that don't even look our way even though we are clearly looking at them. They go back inside, one comes out, and I ask if we could have menus. She comes back empty handed and says that unless the outdoor bar is open. Really? Why didn't the first waitress tell us that when we said we wanted to sit outside, would have been nice to know. They weren't even remotely busy, how hard would it have been to wait on us? I've waited tables at numerous places and if someone wanted the patio and we weren't busy then we would accommodate the request. Plus, it was a party of 6 and we were ready to drink... Lost revenue and tips. All I can say is, "Bring back Joe's!" (Back when it was good). Good riddance Dale's... we are happily down the road at our old faithful- The Mercantile! If you want greasy-good, wrapped in wax paper, authentic Texas decor in a little bitty out of the way Texas town, then this is one of the best-kept secrets in the whole Austin area. Burgers not as 'refined' as say, HopDoddy's, but made the way you make 'em yourself, with plenty of everything on it. Servers are always very unique characters with some great tats-super efficient and friendly. Comes with the requisite outdoor, dirt floor, wooden bench, live music area. There are several similar places in ten Austin area but this one is one the better, more unikque visits. Desserts not so great (sorry Dale) but fab onion rings.
