Update: The hotel had announced in June, that they'd close the restaurant on 6/30/11, to renovate the place. But apparently they simply replaced the management and staff. Don't know about any renovation plans. ******************************* While it's true that this expensive hotel restaurant cannot compare to newcomer Sons & Daughters restaurant, just a block away. The real reason for its demise was poor and unreliable service. I had avoided writing this review for a long time. The kitchen is very slow but food was usually decent and well presented. For example, the mache and beet salad http://s3-media1.px.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/VWVfy40K3S2e7ec3z4YKsw/l.jpg was simple and delicious. The short rib over buttercream mashed potatoes and veggies (half order entree) http://s3-media2.px.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/HN7Vw9fgLiprj_HNCF5c7w/l.jpg was very popular. Although I think the menu had more variety and was a better value long ago, before executive chef J. Wheeless took over. Menu prices match local pricey high-end restaurants, but service left a lot to be desired. I never understood why they always hired inexperienced waiters that get overwhelmed and disappeared for long periods of time. Often not familiar with the menu, can't remember a drink order, made multiple mistakes on my bill, and once I was overcharged after I had already signed the receipt.

The open layout and elegant design make the whole experience feel luxurious and special. The service was also very attentive and friendly, which added to the overall experience. What was ordered: Calamari Fritos: If there's calamari on the menu, 100% I'm going to order it. If a restaurant can't batter or deep fried squids right, then you know something is wrong. Fortunately, it did not disappoint. So delicious. Combination Platter Enchilada and House tamales: Not worth the price. Just skip it. Dish lacks favor. Esquites: Not worth the price. Just skip it. Very bland. Crispy shredded beef taquitos: Not worth the price. Just skip it. There was no favor. Even the queso on top was favorless. Price: It's very expensive for bland Mexican food Parking: Decent. We came after 5:30pm and we did drive around a few times to find parking. Side note: We waited a month to eat here and was sooo disappointed. It wasn't bad but not worth the money or the wait. The flavors were just average and didn't justify the expensive prices. At this point, you're paying more for the ambiance, photos, service than the actual quality of the dishes.

We started off with the calamari appetizer, and it was crisp, succulent, and so good with the tartar sauce. Definitely a great way to start the meal. My friends got the chicken marsala and the veal, while I ordered the marry me farfalle pasta. The veal was delicious, and although the chicken marsala was a little dry for my liking, the flavor of the dish itself was still really good. The marry me pasta was wonderful, creamy, and something I really enjoyed. Overall, the atmosphere, service, and food made for such a great dinner experience. I'd definitely come back here again with family and friends.

I had a delicious hot roast beef sandwich covered in gravy. It was one of the most comforting dishes I have ever had. I remember coming to Tommy's many times over the last two decades and trying everything from their oxtail stew to their meatloaf to their lasagna. Everything here is good! On my most recent visit I got to try their lamb shank with boiled potatoes and carrots. The lamb shank perfectly fell off the bone and the fat melted in your mouth. The gravy was very flavorful. The only thing I found underwhelming were the potatoes as they could've cooked a little longer. The service at the counter is always very good and quick! These guys have been working this counter for a long time. The place still feels a little like a dive bar, but that's all part of the charm of this historical eatery.
