I had a dolsot bowl for my entree. It was packed with beef, egg, and veggies. It was served hot, in a stone bowl, and was delicious! We're so glad we made a stop at Dae Bak Korean Restaurant after coming back into Charlotte from a long road trip. On a chilly evening, this place was just the cozy spot we needed. We were seated right away, and the staff was super friendly from the start. The food was absolutely fantastic. We tried the bulgogi with rice and a mild sundubu, and the portion sizes were generous. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We also really enjoyed the little side dishes--especially the kimchi, bean sprouts, and cucumbers. And the kids got a kick out of the steamed egg, which arrived so hot it looked like a little volcano steaming away. Enjoyed a pleasant meal here tonight before the snow storm arrives. Small though clean space. Ample parking available . Authentic delicious Korean food . Attentive service. We also ordered a soup to go because of the cold weather and expected snow. The only thing for me is I prefer to have fountain sodas available when I go out to dine. Hard to find a good spot for Korea food in CLT area. From my experience, Dae Bak is one of the best. We came on a Sat night around 6:30 and didn't have any issues getting seated. The had a good selection of beer/drinks....far better than I expected (would still like an IPA option). We started with the steamed pork dumplings ($8) and they were well prepared. My bride ordered the Dolsot Bibmimbap ($20) with chicken. She really enjoyed it....but did say the chicken quality could have been better. I went with the Jeyuk Bokkem ($24) and it was excellent. Dae Bak is extremely good. It is a little further out of the city but so worth the drive. I had the Mapa Tofu and the Spicy Pork Sizzler. Both were extremely flavorful and hit the spot. The portions are a great size. I split the two dishes with someone else. We were stuffed by the end and could have taken leftovers home. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We asked if getting more dishes would be too much as we contemplated a soup as an appetizer. They were honest and said yes. Overall it is worth the trip out of the city and I will be back! read more

I visited on a Friday night around 5:30 PM. My party of 2 was able to walk-in and be seated right away. We were greeted promptly and staff was friendly. After placing our order, the server brough out 5 small dishes but didn't explain what everything was. I would have appreciated if he took the time to do that. Also, the menu was a tad overwhelming. My friend ordered: Korean Fried Wings (10 pieces - Sweet Chili / $18.00). Loved the sauce. The wings were good but not as crispy as I would have liked. More batter than I like. I ordered: Gochu Jjajangmyun (added chicken) $16.00 + $5.00. Ordered a Korean Fun beverage (Pear / $3.50) as well. This dish was a large portion. Fabulous food and a yummy cocktail called Suju. We shared a bottle of it because it's strong, but also very smooth and tasty like vodka. After living in Korea for 3 years, I found the taste nowhere near authentic. We were in a community that the business seemed to cater to. The ox bone soup was strings of meat, not the actual bone, and the soup base tasted like water. The dolsot tasted like rice and boiled meat and vegetables, and the marinated pork had no flavor or spice. I'm surprised with the high rating. DO NOT EAT if you you are used to authentic Korean food. This place was pretty good, tho a little on the pricy side. We had the glass noodle stir fry and the hot crispy rice bowl (can't remember the name). Both were really good. The glass noodles were super chewy in a nice way with lovely mushrooms and delicious beef. The people with us got the Tonkotsu and it was soooo good, really crispy, nice sauce. My friends and I have been trying to come to this Korean restaurant for a while and it did not disappoint. Everything was was presented beautifully and full of flavors. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxing, with the upbeat K-Pop music playing in the background. I like how on the tables on both sides there are dividers so that you don't see the people besides you- adding a bit of privacy. Our waitresses were very sweet and helped accommodated all of our needs. We always get seafood pancake as an appetizer and DaeBak pancakes did not disappoint. We are more used to the one whole single plate of the pancake and these small ones are much easier to handle and tasty. I got their soy garlic wings and Gamjatang. Their soy garlic were crispy and full a flavor, but could of have less of the sauces as it soaks up the sauce and gets salty. Their Gamjatang - the pork bones were soooo tender that the meet were just falling off; goes perfectly well with the rice. The jaepchae was umami and the sesame oil tops off the dish. My friends all loved their dish. As you can tell by the photos, there is an abundance of food that we had to take some to go boxes. read more

Then my friends and I shared some tteokboki and they were so chewy and delicious. The side dishes were my favorite, and the kimchi was so good. Dae Bak Korean Restaurant was suggested to me by a close friend. I'd been looking for a new authentic Korean restaurant in the area and I've found it. The small restaurant is serving some appealing dishes both for the cultured palette or the less. I was able to find some dishes that my nibblings really enjoyed. We ordered an array of things. We got the 12 piece Gunmandu (Korean dumpling), 12 piece KBBQ wing (half sweet and spicy and half soy sweet), 2 Beef Bulgogi entrees, Bibimbap with a fried well egg, Ttukbaegi Bulgogi Hot Pot with no veggies, grape soda and a 32 oz Kimchi to go. The appetizers are large portions and were easily shared between the 5 of us. The sweet and spicy wings aren't that spicy but they do have some bite to them. The Beef Bulgogi and Bibimbap were prepared well and are generous portions. The Bulgogi Hot Pot was order for my nephew but he wasn't feeling it. I enjoyed it and would love to have it prepared the way it's intended to come. This dish has a strong umami flavor to it and requires a more trained palette. My family loved the Banchans so much that they had to take some of their homemade kimchi home. If you like Korean food it's definitely worth the drive to Mint Hill for Dae Bak. The dining area is clean. Even though they are short staffed, the service is friendly and efficient. Now for the food: 1. Bulgogi is dry and the marinate doesn't come through. 2. Both fried chicken wings were good. I would order it again. 3. The short ribs were more fat than meat. 4. Fried dumplings were good. 5. Stir Fried Glass Noodle with vegetable and beef had way too much soy sauce. They give you enough white rice and sides (kim chi, etc.). The prices? I finally decided to make the long drive out to Mint Hill area to check out this restaurant for lunch...and here's the deal. Though small and casual, the place was much nicer than expected...and the service was good. Also surprised to find overhead music at this restaurant... though they played this lame "elevator" music. I met up with another Korean friend, and we ordered the popular Korean combo Jjajangmyun and Tanksuyuk, as well as Tteokbokki. Thanks to its high ratings, I anticipated better-than-good food, but let's just say that I was quite underwhelmed. Both Jjajangmyun and Tteokbokki tasted WAY too mild...and lacked the deep, rich flavor. In short, BLAND. I guess Tangsuyuk was the best of the 3 items, but it was way overpriced ($26). Kimchi wasn't too good either...not even close to being as good as the ones I buy from G-Mart. The presentation was pretty good though. Tteokbook was more like Rabokki...in that the Rice Cakes came with Ramen, Fish Cakes and even an Egg. Just too bad that it looked better than it tasted. Again, I was swayed by the high ratings by the locals (?), but we were both very disappointed with the food. Despite being an authentic Korean restaurant, the foods tasted almost Americanized...not at all spicy, utterly lacking in flavor. We both heaped on the salt to make the dishes taste even slightly better... *SIGH* If based only on the food, I would have given a lower rating, but the presentation and service brought it up to at least a 3. This is the second attempt at REALLY good, authentic Jjajangmyun in this town...and I've about given up. Truly depressing. If I return here, I'll definitely be ordering something else. read more

I want to start this review with a shoutout to Jerry and Marlin our servers. They were professional, attentive, and friendly and made our experience all the better. In addition to the service, the atmosphere was very enjoyable, it had a simple interior design with 10 tables in the restaurant. This contributed to the hole in the wall kind of feel. The owners Mr and Mrs park were cooking in the kitchen which contributed to the entire ambiance feel like a family home cooked meal. The food was great! The scallion pancakes were delicious with the sauce. There was also ample squid and shrimp within the seafood. The soups were also very flavorful and hot which is perfect for a cold winter day or hangover. All in all I loved it here will definitely come back soon. read more

Searched everywhere in Charlotte for first-time authentic Korean food that wasn't franchised or overly expensive, and landed here. Friday night, 5:30 PM, holiday week, half the tables full. Got the hot pot with spicy pork. Flavorful not spicy to me. Excellent with the kimchee. We were hungry and ate too fast, you really need to take your time and enjoy. Not the best ambiance but it's clean and way better than most of the strip mall Chinese food joints. Wait staff nice and helpful. There are mainly two types of Korean restaurants in area. There is the Korean BBQ with all you can eat. And there is more the traditional Korean food kind. As I am getting older I can't eat that much I like just regular Korean food a lot better. I have been this restaurant many times and every time I felt the same. It has great food, great service, and great environment. The set up is simple and the wood furniture and painting it felt great. I always ordered their Spicy Seafood Tofu Soup, it goes great with the rice. The service from the sever always nice and kind. I can't believe it's taken me so long to try this place! I've had it on my list since moving to Mint Hill and finally stopped in this month. The server was very friendly and helped me decide on what to order. I went ahead and ordered the sizzling stone bibimbap. He mentioned that this is a popular item because the sizzling stone crisps things up and continues to cook while you are eating. This place is not the most consistent - the meat in their sundubu changes every now and then, their service (complimentary panchan) varies every time I go, and just other little inconsistencies. And their LA Galbi isn't cut like how a Korean from LA would expect LA Galbi to be cut, we really think it should be called Charlotte Cut Galbi because that's just how they cut short ribs in this area. It's what you find in the stores here, but not in California. But despite any of that, the food here has always been consistently good. Like LA or Bay Area Korean restaurant good. And their wait staff has always been amazingly good as well. My wife and I will always be back. read more

On a Sunday afternoon, I made my way to Dae Bak in search of Charlotte's best Korean restaurant. The steamed wontons were great & served with a most delicious dipping sauce. The beef & veggie soup yukgaejang was plentiful although I was surprised to find some chicken in it. There is a chicken version of the soup called dakgaejang, so perhaps soup bases are used interchangeably. It was still odd, as I've never had that happen in 20+ years of eating Korean food.
