Liberty Pole Spirits out of Washington, PA, offers a PA Rye sampling tour featuring rye whiskey from Liberty Pole Spirits, Wigle Whiskey, Dad's Hat Rye, and Thistle Finch Distillery. Until this tour, I had never heard of Thistle Finch nor tasted any of their products. The rye at Liberty Pole was spectacular, with a savory aroma and taste. This weekend, we planned a mini family trip with our kids and their partners. Since we were in the area, I thought it would be a great opportunity to continue exploring the PA Rye trail that we started at Liberty Pole Spirits. A few days ago, we visited Thistle Finch, the first distillery in Lancaster since Prohibition. Now, we've arrived at the final location on my list, Dad's Hat, which I've wanted to visit for quite some time but never had the chance. I first heard about this place from Liberty Pole Spirits, listened to a podcast from Fermented Adventure, and knew I had to visit. The building structure of Dad's Hat, with its distinctive color and older architecture, looked incredible and exciting to enter. Fortunately, we showed up early enough to have the bar to ourselves. Finally being here felt like the culmination of our PA Rye adventure, and it was well worth the wait. I sampled three of the many Ryes available. First was Dad's Hat Maple Finished Rye at 90 proof. This Rye is aged in quarter casks previously used for maple syrup from north-central Pennsylvania. The syrup soaks into the barrels for several months before the Rye is added, resulting in a delightful maple sweetness on the palate. Next, I tried the Port Finished Rye at 94 proof. This whiskey undergoes double finishing, spending an additional three months in barrels that once contained port wine, a sweet wine made from red grapes. These barrels come from @quadywinery in California, imparting a hint of sweetness in both the aroma and taste. Lastly, I sampled the Bottled in Bond Rye at 100 proof. This exceptional blend of 6-10 hand-selected barrels, aged for six years, offers a rich flavor and smooth finish. According to the distillery, the 2022 release had the aroma of baked apples, thanks to the carefully chosen barrels. We had visited the tasting room on Mill Street. Next time, we'll schedule a distillery tour to learn more about their unique process. The tasting room experience was enjoyable, with only three of us there, allowing us to have the place to ourselves. Housed in a historic building, the tasting room provided a cozy atmosphere. I first discovered Dad's Hat at a PA Liquor store and learned that the family's roots are in southwestern Pennsylvania. The visit was a fantastic way to conclude a tour that began at Liberty Pole Spirits. I left with a bottle of the Bottled in Bond Rye, which was outstanding. Cheers!o read more

We come to Bristol fairly often for the festivals and the Bristol Theater shows. Just saw the Rat Pack Together Again! show and it was wonderful! Ate at El Limon, the little Mexican place across from the theater and thought to stop at Dad's Hat. I'm not a dark whiskey drinker (except for Jack rarely) and Rye is the main menu. Okay, I'm game. I ordered the Old Fashioned (classic Rye, angostura and peghaud bitters), $10. Omg! So good! They were out of the mixed nuts from the small bites menu, but I really liked my drink! They offer Rye flights, wine, canned beers, and signature cocktails with rye. Highly recommended. Even if you're not a rye drinker, or drink dark liquors, but I think you'll find something to enjoy! read more

Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey Distillery tips its chapeau to both the founder's father who wore his soft felt headwarmer while distilling the best rye in the Commonwealth and while traversing the wilds of Bucks County. Historically aware, he also made silent homage to the Pennsylvania Whiskey Rebellion (aka Insurrection) that challenged the new federal government from 1791-1794. The farmers of western PA didn't take kindly to the excise tax imposed on the free distilling of moonshine by the post revolutionary central government of George Washington, and either refused to pay it to the "revenuers," or took up arms to resist it. Although more bluster than warfare, a few people did die in skirmishes, but almost all the folks prosecuted were ultimately pardoned by either President George or John Adams. So, when I received a gift of the Classic Rye 90 Proof Craft Whiskey of the Year recently, I respected not only the local entrepreneurship from Bristol, but also the true heritage it represented. My first hoist was to our forefathers both local and farther afield who created this grand American tradition. While not the smoothest sip compared to its cousins in Kentucky, it was still warming and capable of skinning a cat. It's medium amber color looked like maple syrup in a beautiful flask. I haven't made it to the distillery yet, but will get there to sample the variety of rye in their casks. The Pre-Prohibition Style Straight Rye Whiskey (95Proof) and the darker amber finished in Port Wine Barrels are most appealing. Need to make reservations for the tour and tasting. If you go be sure to wear your most comfortable fedora. read more

I have loved their whiskey for a long while, some of the best Pennsylvania Rye you can get. But I just visited their tasting room in Bristol and man! Was it amazing!!! The cocktails were well balanced and they had a nice assortment of snacks. You MUST get the chocolate chip cookies when you go, they are baked to order and are the best I may have ever had. The only challenge is it's a small space, so it can be hard to get a table. It can also get a bit loud so get there early. The bartender was great and enjoyed the service, definitely a hidden gem in Bristol! read more

I've had many a glsss of Dads hat whiskey in recent years and really enjoy their stuff. We figured we'd hit up their new space in Bristol, Pa with family. We ended up also needing to kill time because mill street cantina had a wait. So we ended up here. We got cocktails and a whiskey flight. Everything was great including the service. My wife & I mostly go to breweries or wine tasting. Out of the distilleries we have visited, this is by far my favorite. It is very small, the bar has seating for maybe 4 or 5 with additional seating on the floor. If you get a seat, it is so well worth it. Len who works there is outstanding!! We were so impressed with his knowledge as a mixologist. You tell him what you like and he can make it. Or he has the best suggestions of cocktails to try. Very personable. We were with friends and all of us were so impressed, we signed up for a whiskey and wine pairing event that Len held a few weeks later. WOW!! We were blown away!!! Len and staff were excellent. They even had someone from Penns Woods winery in Chaddsford, PA. for the wines. Never would have ever thought of pairing whiskey, etc. and wine. It worked out so well! Then on top of it, we find out that Len went to culinary school. This guy also is an excellent chef also!! Best lamb chops I have ever had. Excellent crème brûlée. The event said light food. There was a great amount of food, cocktails & wine to satisfy. If you get tickets, don't eat too much before you come. Len (and I forget the young lady helping him), they couldn't do enough for you. Dad's hat is a classy distillery. We took a personal tour of the distillery and warehouse. Herman and John gave us an up close and personal tour of the distilling and bottling process at Dad's Hat. We learned so much about the history of Rye whiskey in Pennsylvania, and about the rebirth of rye whiskey. I think they may have even converted my wife into a whiskey drinker. They should update the name to reflect the better known brand "Dad's Hat" because I almost couldn't find them. With that said I made sure I did because I absolutely love this place!!! We took a tour and did a tasting on a Saturday afternoon. The owner/operators are not only extremely knowledgable but also really funny and friendly guys. The tour was so informative and interesting. At the end you try each of their products. This was only $10!!! As someone who doesn't even enjoy whiskey I still say go!! The info and experience is worth the $10, I had an opened mind, tried everything, and found 1 whiskey I liked. You also can buy the bottles direct from them as opposed to the liquor store which is nice because they don't have consistent shelf space for all of their products in the stingy PA state stores. read more

I'm not a huge whiskey drinker but enjoyed a few samples at an Allentown Cocktail week event this past weekend and I have to say I was impressed. Lou ran us through the different flavors and the subtlety of each and I definitely gained a bit of an appreciation for a good whiskey. I wish I took notes because the one I tried (which I think was aged in vermouth barrels) had a little bit of a peppery finish that was unlike anything I've ever tried. I'm going to see if I can scare some up in Philly, otherwise I may have to make a trip to Bristol to pick up a few bottles. read more

If you like whiskey and or rye this is the place and product for you. Smooth as silk but still at 94 proof has a punch. If you like manhattan's you cant do better than my dads hat rye.
