Was driving by when I saw a random sign for Daddy's Bread and thought let's check it out!! Honor system service within the establishment. As others have mentioned ruined you may think am I in the right place and you are. Just walk up the ramp and open the door to the smell of fresh bread. Plenty of options to choose from, I went with the Rosemary Garlic and will add photos when I get home and cut into this delicious smelling loaf at some point this weekend! Love supporting local small shops like this and if it is as good as it smells, I look forward to grabbing more next time I am in the area! read more

Oh my goodness!!!!!! First time here!!! At 7:05 there were already 3 cars here when I pulled in. The smell of fresh baked bread hits you as soon as you get out of the car. I bought four loaves of bread. The PDG came highly recommended. Can I just say every single loaf was absolutely delicious!!!!! After 2 days not much is left. Selling bread on the honor system for over 40 years! Jean Valjean could've avoided serious jail time with a simple IOU. Aladdin wouldn't have to risk losing a hand if he knew about Daddy's Bread! How many businesses in America have been selling anything on the honor system for that long? My parents would take me here on family vacations in the 80s and 90s and just stock up for the week. We always toasted hearty slices of cinnamon raisin or apple cinnamon and slathered them with butter to start our beach days off right. Daddy's Bread always has a great variety and loaves cost between $5-$6. Bring exact change and slip your bills in the slot! They have gluten free options as well. I stopped in the other day and the incredible smell remains the same. There's still no sign of Daddy or any baker and the guest book is running out of pages. The current one dates back to 2002! During their business hours Daddy's Bread has been a stop off for us every time we're in or around South Kingston, Rhode Island. This is not your customary shopping experience. Daddy's Bread retail location is a small building set on private property with a small parking area next to it. They run on the honor system, and though they post business hours as Wednesday-Sunday 8am-6pm, this can be inconsistent and they suggest keeping an eye out for the OPEN flag flying. The inside of the small building is charming. The wood paneled walls are lined with racks and racks of freshly baked breads in many different varieties. Some loaves may contain honey or parmesan cheese, but for the most part, this is a plant based bakery. Each loaf has an ingredients label on it's bag. We've tried the Anadama (a wonderful traditional dark molasses New England bread), whole wheat, white, 14 grain, rosemary, apple, cinnamon raisin and oatmeal breads. We truly do stop by whenever it's convenient! On only a couple of occasions have we gotten a somewhat stale "fresh loaf", but generally, the loaves have been moist, airy and all are quite sizable. They will also occasionally have a "Day Old" shelf and a small side rack of commercially baked muffins as well as a small refrigerator with bottled water in it, which is particularly nice on those hot summer days. Each loaf costs $7 and payment is in the form of cash only. There is a box by the door to slip your cash into as well as a pad of post-its and a pen to leave a message if you should so please. In this credit card age of mass produced fast delivery, Daddy's Bread provides a slow down, deliciously comforting and truly unique experience. read more

I first came here as a child in the 70's. Over 40 years later, I still come in when I have a hankering for some fresh bread. The breads are always high quality and delicious! Daddy's daughter has branched out into a few pastries as well. People rave about her cinnamon buns. I've tried them a few times, but just don't care for them. The same with the mini carrot cakes. I was excited to see that this year she added danish to her repertoire. I visited yesterday and bought some bread and a package of the cherry danish. So disappointing! The flavor was nice, but they were seriously undercooked. I then noticed on her Facebook page she recommended customers finish cooking the danish in a toaster oven because she had not mastered the baking time yet. Then why on earth are you selling them? How can she justify charging $5 per danish when she knows they are not cooked properly? Four stars based on the fabulous breads of every conceivable flavor (the onion chive is amazing!). read more

Daddy's Bread has been kicking major bread butt in South County for a zillion years and they are open every day starting at 8am. Get there early for the best selection as by noon many of the most popular breads are toast (sorry). What's so awesome about Daddy's is that it's generally self-serve (although in prime tourist season there may be a counter person around to prevent folks from walking off with unpaid for items - I guess that's what happens when you're paying thousands of dollars a week for a beach front rental...). Everything is home-made, fresh-baked - and I can personally vouch for the apple cinnamon, cinnamon raisin, parmesan garlic dill, and everything seeds varieties. Daddy's also sells cookies, desert loafs, and muffins. The prices are right too as a mere $5 will get you a honking size loaf of bread. Be warned though: you'll need to bring exact change as this place won't take credit cards or IOUs. read more

Excellent bread store off the highway; look for the mailbox and pull in the driveway, then park your car next to the Pillsbury Dough Boy sign that warns, "violators will be toast." We stopped by around 11am on a Sunday and were the only ones there. There wasn't too much bread available, but what was there was excellent. We got one loaf of 14 grain, and a wonderful loaf of apple blueberry cinnamon bread, at $6 a loaf - which you leave in a box, as it's on the honor system. We're plowing through both loaves, with some stashed in the freezer. My girlfriend thinks they're a little doughy, but that means they're right up my alley. Definitely worth the brief detour if you're in the area. read more

I'm almost hesitant to write a review because I want to keep it a secret still, but the bread is just too good not to share. I had heard about Daddy's Bread a few years ago but just never got myself that far south early enough to check it out. This past Saturday we tried to get out early and headed down to south county, first stop on the agenda was Daddy's Bread. We got there around 10am and based on what I had read I was worried there wouldn't be much of a selection left. Luckily this was not an issue, I think the only thing that was sold out was the cinnamon rolls. We ended up leaving with a loaf of Dark Rye, Johnny Cake and PDG and snagged 2 blueberry muffins as well. Normally I would never pay $6 for a loaf of bread, but this bread is totally worth it. The next morning I toasted up some of the PDG with butter and OMG it was fantastic. The bread is so soft and moist and toasted up beautifully, so good I went back for seconds. My husband equally loved his Johnny Cake bread. So while the bread is fantastic I think the muffins are even better. We couldn't wait and dove into one of the blueberry muffins right away and it might have been the best blueberry muffin I've ever had. It was so fresh, moist, and filled with blueberries. We saved the second one for the next morning and even a day later it was still just as good. There are no workers and payment is on the honor system. They accept cash, checks or you can pay via pay pal. Bring more cash then you think you'll need because you're going to want to buy everything. This place alone might convince me to make the trip from PVD down to South County more often. read more

I went to Daddy's Bread for the first time today and it was so worth the 20 minute drive to get there. The blueberry apple cinnamon bread is amazing with fresh blueberries and large pieces of apples. Although their website doesn't list it, they also had muffins available today. Too bad this is the end of our vacation but I might have to make another trip there tomorrow before we leave! The honor system to pay is unique and they take checks as well as cash as I realized I wanted to buy more than the cash in my wallet. read more

Daddy's Bread, I have been going here for almost 30yrs now, this place must been seen to be believed. Not a human insight small air conditioned store front (if you can call it a store front...lol).. shelves lined with differnt kinds of bread, muffins, etc. Price list is on the wall. Small refrigerator with cold drinks inside with a sign on fridge door saying all drinks $1.00. There is a guest book for people to sign and leave comments, its located right next to the sign that says deposit money here...Just drop your money thru the slot... All of the breads are fantastick... especially those with raisins apples or blueberrys..... read more

Ok here's the deal! This bread is by far the most delicious tasting bread I have ever had. It has a density and a wholesome flavor. It is on the honor system so bring cash or a check. There was a sign that you could pay online through pay pal too. There were so many IOU notes that it made me sad to think that people would do that and not return to pay. But let's stick to the positive! So you pull in and park and you walk up to what appears to be a house. Stacks of breads adorn the building and now I am home and tried the bread I wish I bought way more and froze it. Do yourself a favor and get off the highway and pick up some bread. Be sure to put your cash in the slot though. No IOU's. Toast that up the next day and you will be so happy. Don't forget to lather it up with real butter! Yummy read more

Great little hidden gem! Discovered Daddy's Bread 3 years ago and we make sure to visit every time we are in the area. Fresh breads and muffins are delivered daily and the smell of proofing dough in the back is reason enough to visit. Make sure you crouch down if over 6 feet tall, it is a very small building. On your honor payment is quite unique and I have heard that you can now use PayPal. read more

Daddy's Bread is one of Rhode Island's Treasures. Jen has donated 100's of loaves of bread to our non-profit humane society. At our last Pasta Dinner fundraiser, 100 loaves were bought within 1 hour. Talk about a bread line. The old saying "I would walk a mile for a Camel" is trivial, as some people drive 35 miles for a loaf of Daddy's Bread. read more
