I wanted to share some feedback about my first visit to the bakery yesterday. I recently moved to the area and had been looking forward to stopping by. When I walked in, I was briefly on the phone with my mom, who was updating me about my stepdad's chemo treatment. I had already told her I was walking into a shop and wouldn't be able to talk, but there was no sign about phone use, and I was the only customer inside. An employee named Cal approached, saw I was on the phone, and told me she'd wait until I was off. I let her know it was okay to take my order, but she walked away. When she came back, she repeated she'd wait, even though I was ready. The tone felt unnecessarily cold. Later, when I asked for a blueberry scone, she curtly corrected me that it was "blueberry rhubarb." Even my mom, still on the line, picked up on the attitude. We ordered a cake on Wednesday (which we appreciated for a pick up on saturday). We got a call Saturday morning that they had dropped the cake. They told us "I have a cake I can frost". We thought I guess it's better than nothing. It was not the flavor we wanted but thought whatever, it's something. It was so horrible looking. The cake looked like chocolate but tasted like nothing with a hint of coffee, which was NOT a desired flavor. The buttercream was disgusting. I've never written a review before but I just have to write one for Sweet Althea's because they are actually the sweetest. Yesterday morning I got a coffee and a very yummy blueberry muffin and ate it outside before driving home. Little did I know that I forgot my entire bag with my wallet, sentimental things etc etc. Around 3 pm there's a knock on my door and it was who I think is the owner who drove all the way to my house to return my bag! After much consideration of the bakeries nearby our wedding venue, we scheduled 1 tasting a few weeks prior. All we knew was that we wanted a buttercake instead of fondant, since we prefer a delicious cake over a good looking one. Once we tried the signature flavor Kim recommended, it was a done deal. Didn't need to do any other tastings. Kim was very easy to communicate with via email & phone, she knew what we wanted and delivered beautifully. We needed a small cake for our intimate wedding (less than 30ppl). While looking through the books she had we loved this simple looking cake that was actually 2 or 3 tiers. I left the top decor to her since I wasn't sure whether I'd use the top I had prepared. Kim's touch with the branches on top looked perfect to match our simple and cute cake. They also had it delivered on time, as promised. The price was great, flavors amazing - we couldn't have been happier. I'm sorry to report that the cakes may or may not be good, but they have issues running this business. I ordered a cake for this Sunday,6/13, and they put it in for the following Sunday. I'm left without a cake, and a "I'm sorry, can't help you, we are busy today. " In addition to this, I sent emails asking for the cake with the exact date I needed it. I was not particularly impressed. The biscotti cookie was good on the half that had been dipped in chocolate but the other half had no flavor so I threw the rest of it in the trash. I didn't care much for the flavor of the pumpkin pound cake though it had a lot of nuts and seeds in it, which was good. The side that had been exposed to the air was a little stale, which kind of spoiled it, one nice soft side and one stale side. The lady who waited on me was very nice and they are in a small mall so parking is easy. The next time I'm in South Kingstown I think I will skip Althea's. I do not recommend at all. My daughter's birthday party is today, 12/30, at 5pm. I ordered a paw patrol themed cake on 12/3 to be ready by noon on 12/30. Kim and I were in contact since September of this year since we were coming from Florida. Kim ensured me everything would be all set. When my daughter's father went to pick up the cake, it was not there. They said they gave our cake to someone who ordered a pie this morning and they were already in Boston with our daughter's birthday cake. They told us they couldn't make another cake and they could offer us a cheesecake or a cookie.....for my daughters 4th birthday party dessert. Absolutely ridiculous! They didn't offer another cake option for us either. Just said, "no sorry, there's nothing we can do for you"...after they messed up. I am not happy to say the least and will not be putting my trust in this bakery for future orders. You have ruined my daughter's party and now we have to scramble to find a cake. I really hate writing negative reviews for places, I downloaded Yelp to be positive and spread relevant information to consumers who are thinking about using a new place. However, I feel that this incredibly relevant information and hopefully no one else will be blindsided the way that I was. It was a long story but here is the summary: I called to inquire if they could do a custom order, they convinced me that they could fulfill a custom order no problem! I gave them three weeks notice, called a few times to confirm and then two days before my event they told me that they didn't have time to make my custom order, given all their other orders that week. I had never heard of the bakery before, but when I called they were SO nice and thorough and even called me a few days before the event to confirm all of the details. We live more than an hour away but the bakery was willing to meet us half way for delivery. The cake was absolutely delicious and has the distinction of being one of the best cakes I've ever tasted!
