I think it's really cool to have that kind of variety in the neighborhood. When you walk in, there's a nice mix of seating. There's seating by the windows, booth-style seating, and other tables throughout the restaurant. I really liked being able to sit where I could get some natural light. You can also somewhat see into the open kitchen, including where the coffee is being made, which gives the space a little extra energy. One accessibility note: like many places in the North End, this restaurant isn't particularly accessible for people using wheelchairs or other adaptive devices. There are about three or four stairs to get inside, so that's something to be aware of before visiting. Now, let's get to the FOOD because I was specifically craving chicken kebabs and Mood delivered! I ordered the chicken shish kebab, and both the flavor and the overall presentation were delicious. When the plate first came out, I was actually nervous because the portion looked a little small. But I was full at the end. So don't let the initial portion size fool you. At least with the chicken shish kebab, it was definitely more filling than it looked. And then there was coffee. I'm not normally a coffee drinker, but sometimes the little things matter. I've been to several restaurants, especially French restaurants, where they don't have white sugar, and if I'm going to indulge in coffee, I need my white sugar! So when I found out Mood had white sugar, I was like, okay, we're in business. The coffee itself was fine, but honestly, having the option I wanted made the experience better. I also really appreciated that they have a mocktail menu. I ordered one of their specialty mocktails, and it was good! Mine had a little spice to it, which gave it an interesting flavor and made it more than just a sweet drink. Another little detail I enjoyed was seeing someone training another person while we were there. Just watching the interaction and seeing someone learn the ropes added another dimension to the experience. Sometimes those little behind-the-scenes moments make a restaurant feel more personable. Overall, I really enjoyed Mood. Great food, a welcoming atmosphere, natural light, different seating options, mocktails, and a Mediterranean menu that gives you something different from the many Italian restaurants surrounding it. We politely asked our waitress whether it could be changed. The waitress was very kind and said she would see what she could do. A man who identified himself as the chef/owner then came out from the kitchen. He told us we would have to pay the difference to change the dish, but the interaction quickly became unnecessarily aggressive. He raised his voice and pointed his finger toward us. I asked him to please stop pointing and speak to us respectfully. The disagreement escalated. At one point I offered to pay and leave. What concerned me far more than the food dispute, however, was what happened when we attempted to exit. The chef/owner physically positioned himself at the entrance and prevented us from leaving while calling the police. My mother and I were extremely distressed. My mother also says he put his hands on her during the confrontation. I called for police assistance as well. Boston police ultimately responded, took our information, and spoke with everyone involved. At my mother's request, we agreed to resolve the immediate dispute there and paid the entire $96 bill, even though most of our food had not been eaten. I understand that restaurants have policies regarding ordered food, and I would have been perfectly willing to have a normal discussion about the bill. My complaint is about how the situation was handled and, particularly, being physically prevented from leaving. The waitress was kind and professional throughout. Unfortunately, our interaction with the chef/owner was the opposite. I'm documenting my experience because customers should be able to disagree about an order or bill without an interaction escalating to this level.

There are six tiny tables just large enough to hold a pizza box, and barely any standing room; it's mostly all about the takeout. Street parking isn't easy, but fairly achievable at $1 an hour at meters. There's a Walgreens parking lot right next door, but highly risky. Offsetting the minor logistical hassles is the convenient availability of slices, a rarity at pizza joints of this caliber. -- Pepperoni Pizza: A beautiful visual and a beautiful flavor and texture. I'll start with the crust, which strike me as a cross between Greek and New Haven: same airiness as Greek, but without the grease; thin and crisp like a New Haven, but without the heavy char. I liked that combination. Minimal droopage (I don't use Portnoy's f-word). The tomato was strong-- dark and spicy with good use of black pepper and oregano. The cheese was light in volume but very sharp. The pepperoni was somewhat thick and top-notch quality. On top of all that, fresh grated cheese for more sharpness and extra texture. The autumnal droppings of giant raw basil leaves didn't really add anything, but they didn't take anything away. Overall, great pizza. Elite, even. -- Cheesesteak: Ordered with onions on their excellent homemade sesame seed roll that's become commonplace among cheesesteak joints, but Square Deli was among the first to do it. Crusty on the outside, but with flexibility-- a great vessel. The beef is ribeye and it's shredded, kind of like a shredded beef dish at a Chinese restaurant. The pieces are flat and reasonably tender. The cheese is sharp, but it tastes and feels more like a beef sandwich with cheese, rather than that singular concoction of lusciousness that is Big Al's in Billerica. The onions added a little something but weren't as noticeable as the namesake ingredients. Good quality beef, cheese, and roll, all of it arriving piping hot, make it very satisfying. Overall, excellent, but not the elite I'd hoped. -- Chocolate Chip Cookie: A giant, soft creation with a little something extra in the dough. Maybe coffee? A solid offering. As for the hype: Square Deli came through in flying colors on the pizza, and fell a little short on the cheesesteak, but it was still a very, very good cheesesteak. As for stars, an easy 5.
