The food selection and reviews of this place made it enticing to check it out, especially considering that not many places were open the day after 4th of July. My friend and I shared the mixed grill tandoori, vegetable curry specialty, and garlic naan. While I enjoyed the tandoori, I felt that the chicken could be more tender and the meats can be less burnt. They gave a huge amount of vegetables and rice that we couldn't finish, and all the dishes portions were huge. The garlic naan is pretty solid though. I would say there isn't really anything to rave about; the quality is quite standard What was irritating was that the service and food took way too long, even after considering the global staff shortages in restaurants. It took 15 minutes to order the food, with 45 minutes to finally get the food despite an estimate of 20 minutes for the Tandoori. In fact, a table next to us were sat after us and finished their meals well before our food arrived which was ridiculous. Fortunately we were not in a hurry, but I wouldn't recommend this place if you don't have a lot of time to spare. read more

We went over to this Indian restaurant craving for some Biryani. The server was very welcoming. The restaurant had a huge selection of items varying over 3-4 different cuisines. We ordered the mango lassi and mango lemonade for drinks. The lassi was very good but the lemonade was a rip off. It seemed like they had just added water and lemon to Fruti/ Rasna/ Maaza. -10/5 stars for that The food was decently good. We asked for spicy, we got spicy. Though they forgot to match up the salt in the vegetable paneer Biryani I suppose. They gave raita with the biryani and the server was kind enough to refill it without us asking again! This small gesture goes a long way. The dal makhni was very good and as requested they added additional cream for us. The chicken curry was so flavorful. The naan was huge and fresh. The portion of rice along with the entrees was more than sufficient. Overall, great portion sizes. Ample food. Between the three of us we ordered 2 drinks, 2 enters, 1 Biryani, and 1 naan and we literally had leftover for the night as well. On top of that, all this for under $60!!! Daawat used to be one of my favorite restaurants. We used them for work (pre-COVID) for catering a few times, and never had any issues with the food quality or the service (always arrived on time and still hot). Unfortunately the two times I've ordered during the pandemic, I've found pieces of hair in the butter tofu masala. Disgusting. I was hoping the first time was a fluke, but it doesn't seem to be. The raita was a bit disappointing, I was expecting some kind of salad based on the menu, but this was really just a bowl of cold raita yogurt. The chai tea situation was really weird. I ordered an iced chai tea (described on the menu as having unlimited refills). They first said they didn't have it, which I thought was weird for an Indian place. They asked if I wanted something instead and I said no. Then the waiter showed up a minute later with a iced chai tea. Somehow they found some! Which was great, because it was a hot day. So, scarfed that down, and asked for my refill. At that point, I was told there were no refills. "I think it says there are refills on the menu," I pointed out. "Only hot chai gets refills, not cold," the waiter replied. Well, I was pretty sure the menu did not distinguish, but I just said hot is fine, figuring maybe there's an ice shortage somewhere. And they brought me a hot chai, which was really good (better than the cold). But then I was charged for two chai teas, one hot and one cold! So, there was some funny business going on. read more

Great Indian spot in Downtown Seattle! I don't usually eat Indian food back home (Vegas) and adjusting to Seattle's cold and rainy weather, I was in the mood for soup or even curry. So this place hit the spot. Had the mixed grill, Mango curry, and the BEST DAMN GARLIC NAAN - I had it again the following day with tomato soup! So bomb. The mango curry had great flavors. The mixed grill wasn't bad, but it wasn't the original order we requested. It was supposed to be the Chicken Tikka masala. Mango curry (ordered max spicy) haven't tried this anywhere before, so wasn't sure what to expect. Interesting at the beginning, but I feel like the sweet aftertaste was kind of weird eventually and didn't go well with the other items I ordered. I probably wouldn't get this again. Came with rice as well. 3. garlic naan and also plain paratha Hadn't tried paratha before. I would describe it as a little sweeter than naan but still savory? Like an american food comparison would be like white bread versus wheat bread? I definitely preferred naan to go with the curries, but I probably wasn't supposed to eat it with those specific curries haha it was good though. 4. Veggie samosas Came with 2. Overall nice place with very authentic Indian food. When we came into this place it seemed little busy Monday with online and take out orders. We ordered veggie samosa, tandoori chicken Tikka, lamb briyanni and garlic Naan. IT came out with great portion. Couldn't finish it. Also you get to choose spice level on every food. Tandoori chicken Tikka (Indian spicy) was delicious but chicken was little dry and hard to chew. Flavor was still there. Lamb briyanni was really delicious I loved it except for it has nuts in its ingredients. Garlic Naan was huge and best of the night lmao. It was best Naan I have ever tasted. Server was okay. After food came to table, he didn't come and check on us. But it was rush hour and hard to handle all tables with take out orders. I understand that. Buzzer came frequently and refilled our water. We came in here on a Saturday night and immediately got seated. Good place to satisfy your craving for Indian food but pretty standard overall. I ordered the Madras Masala with Paneer and it was tasty. The waiter decided for me I should eat medium spicy (reasoning they gave: "it's not hot at all") which was somewhat stereotyping especially after giving my Indian friend a whole array of spice level options but oh well. I will categorize it under well intended. The garlic naan was okay. Not the best I've had but also not the worst and that about sums it up in terms of their food really. Service was somewhat dysfunctional. - Person who took our order wrote nothing down which can lead to some errors which unsurprisingly it did (forgot one item). - Food came out at very different times for our party of 3 which always leads to some awkwardness and confusion. "You should start eating", "No, no I can wait" and "Did they forget yours?" type awkward. - We signaled one of the waiters a few times and they decided to pass us by a few times before actually coming to see what was up. Unfortunately disappointed with my meal, especially after seeing all of the strong reviews. I ordered the Shish Taouk - my chicken was nicely seasoned, but the texture of it was just... off. It tasted rubbery and I couldn't eat it. The mixed veggies were fine but seemed like they came from a frozen bag of pre-cut broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. This was a $20 dish so I was expecting more. The aloo gobi, however, was good! Spicy but that's what I asked for. Came with basmati rice which was fine. The hummus was fine, also, but the pita did not look homemade! It was a perfectly round disc, not browned or with any of the rough texture you want in a pita. It looked like a large, soft Lunchables crust if you can imagine that. That was a major disappointment. I will most likely not return here. read more

In my house you can always pretty much bet what the husband will say when I ask him what he wants for dinner. Indian cuisine. Dinner the night we were going downtown for a theater production was no exception and we luckily found Daawat in walking distance. We called for a reservation but they assured us we wouldn't need one. Upon arriving we were seated right away and a very friendly and enthusiastic server came by to bring us drinks. He'd never made a rum and coke before so the husband gave him the run down, and with his energetic attitude he was back in no time with some great drinks. We ordered one of our favorites, chicken curry, as well as something new to me. I had not had this cashew rice dish, the royal biryani, and was excited to be a little more adventurous than our usual. Our server wasn't very knowledgeable about gluten free items but did a great job checking with the kitchen and assuring me everything was gf. There's a ton of items on the menu all labeled gf! He then stopped back by the table to ask me more about gluten allergies so that he could learn and know more for future customers. Definitely awesome. Our food arrived quickly and everything was delicious. Excellent spice level and creaminess to the chicken curry and the cashew rice dish was flavorful and filling. The portions were huge and we took plenty home for another nom session. I wanted to really like this restaurant since it has good reviews, is close to my house, and I love Indian food generally. These are very difficult times for restaurants especially for dining-in during the pandemic. Given reduced foot traffic, you'd expect them to take extra care when dining in or not offer it if they are not prepared: 1) Cooked fly in the basmati rice that I almost ate. This was a deal breaker. Thankfully it was near the top of the rice, otherwise definitely would have eaten it. Waiter didn't seem concerned when we told him other than being upset we were leaving. 2) Of the two chefs/cooks in the open kitchen area we could see one was not wearing a mask. I don't mean temporarily but the entire 25min or so we were there. They both were checking their phones and handling food at the same time. No hand washing, no glove changes. There were about 3 other people casually walking around near the kitchen with no masks. They did not appear to be working but were consistently within 6 feet of food prep areas. With the pandemic this is unacceptable. This would effect takeout orders too which worries me even more. 3) Of the few restaurants I've gone to during the pandemic, most use digital only menus or even disposable paper menus. Dawat used their regular menus which you'd expect them to clean/sanitize right afterward. They did not. The waiter put them back on the host stand for the next table and handed them to the next people walking in for to go orders. On a minimally positive note, they provided complimentary fritters while we waited for food (before we noticed most of these issues). The fritters were good but unfortunately we didn't get to try the rest of the meal. Hopefully this review encourages Dawat to put in place better common sense practices during the pandemic. And just general food and kitchen hygiene for non pandemic situations. read more

Stopped by for lunch on a weekday at Daawat because they had glowing reviews and I thought the buffet would be a good way to get to sample as many items as possible! Perhaps I came at a bad time just before the rest of the crowd from convention center came in. The check in was pretty much chaotic. Noone really to take you to your table. Since I was just there by myself, I grabbed a seat at the bar. It wasnt the cleanest counter I sat at...and honestly I had to bus my own table to get my napkin and utensils...and of course...I had no glass for water. None of the wait staff came by to ask about any drinks I would like...let alone a glass of still water through out my meal. I was fortunate enough to get in a buffet line right around when the line was starting to form. Even then, the fried stuff in pieces like pakoras were running out already! I dont think the guy behind me was able to get one given I didn't see any staff waiting to refill those buffet items and I was the lucky one to grab the last piece. I grabbed a bit of everything to try and honestly was let down by the taste of the food. With the exception of chicken biryani which the rice was quite aromatic, everythinf else was bland...tasted quite flat without much spice. I was also let down by the butter chicken which has traditionally been another dish I love about Indian food..but was kindda sad that it tasted like pieces of boiled chicken dumped into a sauce just to make the dish serve-able in the buffet line. To be honest, I was so let down that I had just one plate of food and didn't even feel like getting seconds or dessert. The line was extremely long and reminded me of why I generally don't like eating buffet food at all. Nice location though and the price was reasonable ($12.99) especially if you are going for seconds or more. But other than that, maybe a la carte meal is probably your best bet.
