To preface this, I talked to Edward after my move, but I've seen no follow up. So here's my experience with D-Town Movers.
I found D-Town through Home Advisor. I was looking for movers, talked to three different companies, and Edward was so intent on gaining my business he quoted me lower than the other two companies. Our house closed on 12/23, and while I wasn't excited to move the weekend before Christmas, I talked to Edward and Leyta and they both confirmed they could complete the move with no problem.
It started when I sent the email Edward quoted me (3 man crew, 26 ft truck, hourly rate) to Leyta. We followed up with a phone conversation and I put down my deposit to secure my date of 12/23/16, with movers showing up sometime between 2 - 4 pm. I didn't check the confirmation email she sent to me right away, but I did look at it the day before our move and saw that all the information she put in was WRONG! That was my bad for not looking at it sooner, but as soon as I saw it, I called to confirm. She had the date right, but she had me with a 24 ft truck, showing up between 8 am - 10 am, and she had my phone number completely wrong. While on the phone with her, I confirmed all the details (this was on 12/22/16), and she assured me that while she mistyped the information, I was confirmed for the 2 pm - 4 pm time slot on 12/23.
So, 12/23 comes along. We close on our house in the morning, our furniture gets delivered successfully. 2 PM rolls around...no phone call. 3 PM...no phone call. 3:30 PM...no phone call. At 3:55 PM, I call one of the D-Town Movers numbers, and talk to Edward. He says he'll call me back. So about 25 minutes later he calls me, and guess what - NO MOVERS ARE COMING! Why? Because my move was marked as COMPLETE!!! Except that it wasn't. So my day is essentially screwed now, because we had to be out of our storage units by 9 PM that night!!! So I had to go to my storage unit and make arrangements with them to leave our stuff for another day. Edward told me he would try to get some movers to me that evening, and he would call me back. Around 5:15 PM, he calls me back and says he can have a crew out there in about 40 - 45 minutes. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???? It's dark now, I don't want to move in the dark. I have plans, like every other person, on Christmas weekend. I told Edward to forget it, don't send anyone. He asks me, "what can I do? I can give you a discount, take off half the trip charge and then a discount on the hourly rate. I can have a crew there first thing tomorrow morning between 9 AM - 10 AM." I told him if he gives me the discounts and gets a crew there first thing in the morning, I'm okay with that.
So, 12/24/16...I'm expecting a call early in the morning hoping a crew will be there to move me. We get a call just before 10 AM that a crew will be there in 30 - 40 minutes. So they finally show up around 10:40 AM (note that isn't when he told me the crew would show up in a previous conversation, but at this point, I'm like whatever, I'm getting moved). Now, the crew, they busted ass! I will say that much. They got us moved out of our storage units pretty quickly. It took two trips (one for the big unit, another for the small unit). They were very nice and efficient.
Two points of feedback on the move itself. First, they broke my knob off my dryer. That sucked because I had to order a replacement part. To "pay" for the damage, they deducted 15 minutes of time from my move. Second, watch how they stack things. I had heavy boxes stacked on not so heavy boxes, which caused them to buckle. Fortunately, nothing else was damaged.
So, when it came time to pay, I told them they needed to call Edward because he said we were getting an additional discount for the inconvenience. When they called, the only "discount" we received was getting the full trip charge waived. WTF??? That's not what Edward and I had talked about on the phone. So, thanks for deducting $45 from my move. I know that might seem ungrateful, but really, this was a giant pain. Oh, and to top that off, remember the deposit I put down to secure my move - it was never applied to the total.
So, I call to talk to Edward about it and end up talking to Leyta. She refunds me my deposit, and Edward said he would reimburse me for some of the cost of the move. Something like $60. I've still never seen that "reimbursement" or the email he promised to send when he got back into the office.
Now, I understand the "growing pains" of a business expanding rapidly, but don't give me lip service because you want to keep your reputation looking clean. It's just not good business. So, while all these reviews look pretty awesome, don't ignore the people who are telling you about their bad experiences with this company too. Don't think I'd use them again. read more
