Friday night brings a special dinner treat featuring a selected type of international cuisine. If you are not sure what to eat, try whatever Janet recommends. Ok, it's St. Patty's day and I'm on the road for business. I'm always looking for that place even the locals sometimes have a hard time knowing about. This is the best example of fine home cooking and an extremely warm and personal hostess/cook/dishwasher/neighbor. Janet didn't really have a printed menu - another interesting point - but she said in honor of St. Patrick's Day, she did her spin on brisket, potatoes, etc. The only other table was a table of 3 middle aged couples. They indicated in the friendliest way that I should just trust Janet. I told her to serve whatever she had as a special for the night. Started with some homemade bread and a green garlic dipping sauce. This was followed by a cole slaw - definitely not your mamma's standard cole slaw - it was just slightly creamy and very tasty. Dinner was seared & slow cooked brisket with cooked red cabbage and potatoes 3 ways (at least I think it was 3 ways). Everything was delicious. Everytime I'm back in Montgomery, I'm going to try and visit Janet and find out what she's got cooking in the back room. YUM! read more

All i can say is wow. Don't let the few reviews fool you. The food is amazing and the owner, Janet, is just as engaging. You definitely feel like family when you eat here. I had an off menu seafood soup and it was the best I've ever had. When you come in the menu looks thin but Janet will start asking what you want and she will just create something for you. The day i was there she bought some shark and was serving it stuffed with the dorsal fin and body intact! Crazy! I wish i came back to Montgomery more because I am going to miss this place. Amazing food and even better atmosphere. If you've ever had a friend who's mom made you feel like one of her kids and fed you like one that is what you can expect at D'Road. I got the brisket, and my husband got the rib eye. The seasonings were unlike anything I've ever had. We got lucky on our visit and got some free dessert because the cook had made it for someone's birthday. My husband says it's the best dessert he's ever had. A pineapple cake that was gluten free as well. Wish we weren't just passing through town and could try it out on international night, where the owner steps out of her regular Venezuelan menu and puts her hand to a variety of other international delights. We will most likely find ourselves in Montgomery in the future and will add this restaurant to our must dos when we're back. read more

If you are staying in downtown Montgomery--or even if you aren't--there just isn't any excuse for not enjoying the best breakfast and lunch in town at D'Road Cafe. I've lived here for 30 years and am a former restaurant reviewer for the Montgomery Advertiser. And so I make this recommendation with complete confidence: walk right by all those downtown eateries. Try the "pork on the horse." Check out the pic of the food. The food tastes as fresh as it looks. It includes pulled pork, rice, black/green beans, topped with a fried egg and tomatoes. The sweet tea is great too. Come in knowing that everything is made from scratch and only one person, Janett, runs the whole show. Come in with time and an open mind and you will have a great experience. Oh, and don't expect to get a menu. How did I choose this entrée? I didn't, Janett chose it for me. I walked in and she greeted me with a big hola! I responded in Spanish and it was a done deal. It was as if Janett was my aunt who had known me since a kid and knew exactly what I liked to eat. She began by telling me that she would be making me a chicken dish, paused, and then changed her mind and said in Spanish, "better yet, I am making you pork on a horse." Being of Mexican descent, I had no idea what this was but was up for an adventure. Janett did not disappoint. The dish was excellent. I make decisions all day so it was kind of nice for someone to take over and just serve me a great dish. Just like visiting a loving Tia (aunt). I saw a pair of older ladies order the Venezuelan hamburger. I was shocked at how tall this thing was and how Janett managed to make it stand upright. I was equally shocked that both ladies ate the whole thing. Apparently it was really good too. The meal set me back about 15 bucks but the experience was well worth the cash. I had an early lunch break, so I thought it would be worth checking out D'Road Cafe, whose breakfast-lunch hours fit well into my schedule. Also, they were serving stewed rabbit that day, which I wanted to try. I walk in a 10:30 and Janet doesn't look ready to serve me stewed rabbit, nor much else for the lunch service. Her small hot bar is empty, and she admits she got started a bit late today. Aside from a little help that pops in and out, she's basically the whole operation, so the whole operation got started a little late today. Among a wave of apologies, we place ourselves in her hands and wait for her to get everything together. Ten minutes later, she presents us with a plate of sauteed cabbage and zucchini, some rice, and a few thick slices of a heavily seasoned, fork tender, and admittedly quite dry roast (probably more like braised) beef. The tomato-based sauce in which it was served helped, but there wasn't enough. Still, we ate it up and thanked her kindly, because this clearly isn't a restaurant that exists to make maximum profit against a consumer. Janet wants to share her cooking with Montgomery, and while her pan-Venezuelan cuisine might be hard to nail down, the atmosphere is exactly what you might expect if you were to walk into someone's home and they cooked you a meal - you eat it and thank them profusely, ignoring any specific flaws in the meal because you know it came from the heart. read more

This place is awesome!!! Everything is so good. I had a strawberry banana smoothie ( only fresh fruit and a tiny bit of ice used) so refreshing- NOT heavy. I also had her reccommedation of the pork with rice topper with pico de gallo and an egg. It was wonderful also. I wish I lived in Montgomery I would eat here weekly. This is a neat little find. I really commend the owner who is great at selling her food and her vision. She cooks from all fresh and organic ingredients. No short cuts. No menu- just choose from what she has to offer that day. We came for lunch. My husband had the turnip greens, rice, cabbage and a pork chop. I had the mixed cauliflower and broccoli, cabbage, sweet potato and chicken. Most of it was a little over cooked, I'll be honest. But everything was nicely seasoned. They have international night every Friday for dinner and it is a different country each night that is represented. Took the family in to have dinner and just as everyone says, Janet is very nice. She seems to be one of two people working the restaurant, and can get a bit overwhelmed. When we arrived, she asked us to be seated and that she would be with us in 3-5 minutes. We had to find the menus and get the understanding that she's making basically one thing for the night. We had the paella which was fantastic and asked for a couple of empanadas. The paella for two was AMAZING, but the empanads were very bland. Perhaps had they been stuffed with a spicy meat, the cornmeal and cheese would have been a bit better. I appreciate he r making them however. All in all, the food was good and fresh and therefore a bit pricey. I imagine that she wasn't making a huge batch of paella but multiple batches to maintain quality of the mussels, etc. Due to the price, it will be a place we go to infrequently, but still worth the 4 stars given. read more

I was in town for a wedding, I stay in a B&b downtown, never the less I found this place searching the internet. The decoration was too cute and cozy, there were only one couple there. The place was clean the host was nice. I ordered the Saturday special but replaced the the ham with steak which was not on the menu, the little older lady (manager I think) was soo fast to appease me and make the breakfast...it was amazing. Every Friday is international night - tonight was Puerto Rican food which I didn't think I was going to like but it was amazing! Janet is a great cook! What a great surprise this was!! We were visiting the Rosa Parks Museum just down the street and looking for a quick place to have lunch. We had intended to go to another place next door that was closed and walked in here not knowing what to expect. We were greeted warmly and invited to get a drink and come choose our food. We eat got to choose a meat and three sides, and literally every single thing was absolutely delicious. The pork loin and chicken were amazing- as were the chickpeas, green beans, plantains, pasta- everything. Jannet the owner could not have been more friendly. Not sure if we will ever be back in Montgomery, but I would go there again in a second and recommend if widely. We visited Montgomery for a week-long conference and ate at D'Road Cafe three times: two breakfasts and a dinner. The owner, Janet, is a very friendly hostess. She greets everyone warmly, as if they were an old friend (and indeed, many of the people we saw come in seemed to be exactly that--old friends). She is originally from Venezuela but has lived in many places, including the UK. I ordered the Crazy Eggs for breakfast, while my husband ordered the omelette. We both liked them so much that we ordered the same thing again on our second breakfast visit. They were delicious. For dinner, we both ordered the rib-eye steak, which came with sautéed vegetables. It was nicely cooked and tasted great. The price was very reasonable. Previous reviews have mentioned that this is a very small restaurant, but it has moved to larger premises since then. read more

I love the menu concept of the D' Road Cafe. They plan a single "main" entree per day and then add a second choice with several sides that changes daily and it's not limited to just Latin American cuisine. They even do a German dinner menu.
