Beef tips with rice and gravy, cabbage, and yams
    Jessica S.

We had lunch today at Mrs. B's Homecooking in Montgomery, and it was everything comfort food should be--satisfying, flavorful, and made with care. The beef tips with rice and gravy were tender and rich, the kind of dish that makes you slow down and savor every bite. The yams were perfectly sweet, almost like dessert, and the cabbage added a simple, earthy balance to the plate. The smothered pork chop was another standout--juicy and well-seasoned, nestled under a generous helping of savory gravy. The mac and cheese was creamy and indulgent, while the green beans were well-cooked and nicely seasoned. The portions were generous, the staff was kind, and everything tasted like it had been made in a real kitchen--not just prepped, but cared for. If you're looking for a solid, home-style meal in Montgomery, Mrs. B's delivers in a big way. We'll definitely be back.

Worth the drive over to the west side - some of the best soul food I've ever experienced. They have a set daily menu of choices, along with several homemade desserts to choose from. Every meal comes with a sweet tea. Everything is delicious! They pack a lot of employees behind that counter and all are super friendly and helpful. They have a small drive up window and a small lobby, with a few tables inside and outside for sitting. I had the fried chicken and it was possibly the best I've ever had. Skin was very crispy and it was cooked fresh. I will definitely visit here when I am hungry and traveling I 65.

Turkey Wing. This plate was $14 and came with a drink. Insane.

I don't even know what to say. This might be, hands down, the greatest soul food place that I have ever seen or even heard of. I was stunned by the quality and variety of their offerings. I had trouble choosing what to get. I absolutely have to return and try more of the menu. I will certainly be back when I'm in the area. Oxtails, blackeyed peas, ribs, yams, butterbeans, mac and cheese, creamed corn, huge turkey wings, pork chops, neck bones, fried fish...you name it. Everything you need to make all your soul food dreams come true. Just incredible. The seasonings were permeating the air. The operation itself was simple and efficient. Order as you walk past the food and they heap big portions onto your plate. Pay at the end of the line. Take it to go or grab a table. Small space, no frills. The whole focus is the food. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but rest assured that the good food that you need to make your life complete is in there. Go in and get it. You will not regret it at all. So good. 5 stars.

I visited Mrs. B's during a recent trip to Montgomery, AL because my go-to place was not open. Mrs. B's is a small, cafeteria-style soul food restaurant which, surprisingly, also has a drive-thru. I came for lunch/dinner and, from the menu, it appears they have a set daily menu (there was also a huge breakfast menu, but I wasn't there for that). The lunch/dinner meals come with a protein, 2 sides, a cornbread muffin, and a drink (I got sweet tea - idk if there are other options). We ordered 3 fried chicken meals and here is my opinion of the food (I tasted everyone's sides. lol): -Fried chicken: Excellent crunch but I would've loved if the flavor carried thru to the meat. -Lima Beans: VERY GOOD!! Top 3 I've had. -Collard greens : I don't like sweet collard greens -Mac & cheese: Ehhh... Cornbread muffin: It tasted good and was cooked perfectly. -Rice: Under-salted -Corn: It was ok.

Whenever I come to Montgomery, I make it a point that my first stop is Mrs B's. Everything on the menu is real good wholesome food, the kind that our Grandmothers use to make. The portions are generous and you'll leave full for hours. The building isn't much to look at, but the kind ladies and food definitely overshadows that.

This place is nothing to look at but the breakfast is amazing. I can't say enough how this is a hunny hole. Right down the road of day street gate at Maxwell AFB. Service was a little slow but they were busy. They do have a drive-up window. Inside is small area and rundown a little but the food is great. Did I say the food is great. It's definitely worth a visit. I will soon return and see what lunch is about. It truly is home cooking.

When I tell you this is a real home made, delicious biscuit place, hear me out. The biscuits were big, moist, freshly baked and soooo good. Everything I hoped for in my meal in the South. Fried chicken was perfection, I enjoyed mine with cheesy grits. My friend ordered the pancake and it was huge and light and tasty. The lady at the counter was so kind, and handling the counter and the drive through. Near the Montgomery Alabama airport, a perfect way for our final meal before flying home. Oh yes, I took home all the biscuits they had to share with family and friends.

This place sets the standard for what soul food should be. Flawless. The service and staff are extremely friendly and the pricing is very fair. I'll be back for sure whenever I make it back to Montgomery. It does tend to get hot in there, no AC. But you can say that as to the ambience of being in the south.

Their slogan is something along the lines of, "as good as grandma." I couldn't agree more. Snuggled between two auto shops, you will find Mrs. B's. Nothing fancy here and no A/C but the food is spot on. The fried chicken was perfect! Perfectly seasoned, perfectly fried! I also had the green beans and Mac and Cheese. The Mac and Cheese was in my top 3. The sweet tea is also something you don't want to miss. It was particularly hot that day so the fact that there was no AC was a bit uncomfortable but there are seats outside too. They also have a drive thru.

My wife did two…read moredifferent AI restaurant searches and Martha's Place came up on both searches, as highly recommended and one of the best-known country cooking / soul food spots in Montgomery. Martha's Place it is... Upon arrival, Martha's place looked very upscale. Very nice building and many Mercedes and Cadillacs were parked out front. We started to wonder if we'd wandered into some rich neighborhood where the prices would be sky high! We walked in and a young lady greeted us and told us that lunch was $14 including a drink. GREAT! Everyone in the restaurant was amiable and helpful. (Staff and customers). We went to the buffet and loaded our plates with beautifully fried chicken and meatloaf for our proteins. For our sides we had collards, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas a couple of pieces of cornbread and some banana pudding for dessert. Then, the first weird thing happened. As we took our seats, the waiter that helped us get seated, told us that they only had one fork and one knife. We assumed he meant he would go back to the kitchen (or the dishwasher, or wherever) and get us another set. Meanwhile, the food looked SO GOOD, we immediately began sharing the fork and taking turns. MAN! THIS FOOD WAS GREAT! After a couple of minutes, we noticed the second weird thing... we were the only two white folks in the entire, crowded restaurant. And there were LOTS OF PEOPLE. They also do a huge to go business, so, the buffet station stays pretty busy with people coming and going. But, during the entire time we were there, there was not a single non-black customer in the house, except us. Not an employee. Not a customer. Not even a to go customer, just passing through - NOBODY. After about 5 or 6 minutes of taking turns with the fork, we decided our server must've forgotten about us. So, my wife went and asked and was informed they still didn't have any forks. (No. We were not being singled out, as my wife heard them tell another customer the same thing.) My wife asked if they had some plastic utensils, used for to go orders. They were able to oblige. Back to the food... The fried chicken was as good as any I've ever had and much better than any I've had in recent memory. The vegetables were also seasoned and prepared as good as any I've ever had - in a restaurant OR at home. The cornbread didn't have real corn in it, (like I prefer) but it was still some KILLER CORNBREAD. And the nanner puddin' was off the charts. I REALLY WANT some more of that nanner puddin'!! The staff were friendly and helpful and I have no idea why we were the only white folks in attendance. Maybe it was just a weird coincidence. But, I'll tell you this. The nice people at this restaurant KNOW HOW TO COOK. And I highly recommend this restaurant to ANYBODY -- No matter what color you are! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and we look forward to dining there again, the next time we pass through Montgomery. Go here. You won't get a better country meal - anywhere. P.S. You might want to bring a fork.

The icing on the cake to our wonderful meal though was the blackberry and apple cobbler (so good we had to get a second to go). The meals were $15 each and the dessert was $3.50 - great value. Some didn't know if it is pet friendly on the property of the Legacy Museum. One museum guy said the dog couldn't be on the terrace but okay in the grass by the curb. We sat down in the sun with our dog and tried to enjoy some southern comfort soul food. Then upon leaving an aggressive man from the museum told me I had to leave the property. I let him know that online it states "pet friendly". He was not very nice about even when I told him I was leaving. I guess he wanted to make a statement to the public. If this was driven by a prior history of dogs, I get it. BUT put up signs and even call it out why dogs are not welcome. I did what I could in advance to make sure I wasn't breaking rules and choosing a place to eat with my dog on family vacation traveling the South. I will not be back to Montgomery and now how a very negative view of this city. Unfortunately I was trying to teach my kids about social justice and our past history of racism and segregation. I feel it's reversed here.

Now, I don't know what has happened since then, but something did. To begin with, the place always looked "used". It had been there a long time and that's expected but this time the chairs looked badly worn and the carpet was in need of help. But it looked clean over all. The workers were friendly but very busy. They had a teenage boy who seated us who was in need of some grooming. But he was polite, so we let it slide. The waitress was very casual and nice as well. But it looked like this one poor lady was handling the entire side of the place by herself. I can overlook all of the above if the food is good but... To begin with, I ordered the same meal I ate in 2021 and yes, I remembered it! As a turkey lover, I recalled it as a Thanksgiving kind of meal that I enjoyed which was why I ordered it again. It was billed on the menu as: Sliced turkey, stuffing, three sides and cranberry sauce. I could eat Thanksgiving 365! And that first time was like reliving Thanksgiving at Moms. Not this time. Aside from being out of broccoli (which limited the green sides down to green beans and/or collard greens- which I do not like) there was an issue with things not being as presented in the menu. The "stuffing" or "dressing" was a small heap of mushy something. It was thin, watery and bland. Horrible! The "sliced turkey" was fractured white meat of turkey, fractured so much that it seemed to meld into the mushy dressing. The two were undiscernable. And it, too, was bland. There was something they called turkey gravy but it was definitely a canned or otherwise prepackaged gravy: bright yellow in color and gloppy in texture. The mashed potatoes were fine, a little salty but fine, though I am not sure if they were homemade or from mix or what. The "green beans" were not what I had before. Before I had what, at worst, had been frozen green beans, though well-seasoned and cooked through. This time I was given Italian beans from a can that had no flavor to them. And then there was the mac n cheese. The test of a good Mom and Pop place is the M&C and this batch failed. Over cooked elbow macaroni in a non-saucy glob of light orange gunk that tasted like flour and not cheesy at all. If that sounds bad, worse was the pie. They used to serve cake and some damn good cake, too! But we were told today they serve pies. I ordered the lemon meringue. I make lemon meringue pie so I know fully well what one should taste and look like and this was NOT it! The fill looked like leftover banana pudding with the bananas extracted. It wasn't set and the meringue slid off of it. The meringue itself had a wateriness that I couldn't quite figure out but it was lightly toasted on top. The corn muffins were good, though they could have gone without being dunked in butter. Over all, I cannot give this place the report I would have liked to have given a landmark in Montgomery. Its sad, too.

Martin's was like a little bit of home. For those raised in the south, you know what I mean when I…read moresay butter peas, collard greens and fried chicken. The two meat came with another side so chose the broccoli casserole. Had I come on the day when the fried green tomatoes or fried okra were the option, I definitely would have swapped out the broccoli casserole. Generous portions and I easily could have split this meal with someone. They definitely know southern cooking here. It's not a fancy place by any means, just good cooking. Our server seemed a bit tired or put out, I couldn't tell which thus the 4 stars. I did go later afternoon following the lunch rush so that could have been the issue.
