I have had both their stewed chicken in brown sauce and the jerk chicken, both of which were excellent. For an American palette, I think they need to remove the bones from the stewed chicken, but A+ for authenticity. If you ask for hot sauce, they will give you some "homemade sauce", which I would call a Scotch Bonnet relish, not sweet. It is great, but pretty chunky for being called a sauce. It has that great spicy sweet heat of the scotch bonnet pepper, and is a great compliment to collards.

We visited O'Dessa's Blessings for lunch on Jan 7, 2026 as part of Road Scholar's "The Civil Rights…read moreMovement - Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham" program. It is run by a husband-and-wife team from catering, food preparation to being the entire waiting staff - just the two of them doing everything. The food - southern cuisine - was already laid out buffet style in the main hall. At the far end of the hall were desserts. Drinks of water, orange juice and sweet tea were in the dining room to the left of the hall. Now the dining room is large enough area to accommodate a party of 40 (there were 28 of us). I don't care for southern cuisine, unless it's seafood. But I did like both fried and baked chickens, spinach and cabbages; had multiple helping of them. I wished rice was included. The abundance of spaces between the tables helped in reducing the noise level. I sat at one of the smaller tables so that helped a lot. The overall decor evokes a pre-1980s feel, and apparently so is the upkeep of the building. The service was good enough that I would have given it at least four stars. Then I went to the men's restroom. When I finished my business, I turned the doorknob to unlock and it came loose. I though: was the door unlocked the entire time? This was shocking. Anyone could have entered. For that, one star is removed. (Had someone entered while I was *ahem* busy, I would have deducted two stars.) The restroom doorknob issue is enough reason for me to not recommend O'Dessa's Blessings. I hope the owners have done something about that.

Was looking to try something new in Montgomery and I decided to give this place a shot…read more Both times I went I've experienced really friendly and welcoming waiters/waitresses. I wasn't a fan of the tacos so for this review I'll focus strictly on the fried chicken and I must say the fried chicken is off the chain. It's thick, juicy and just the right amount of heat and flavor. The fries show up and show out as well. The blend of Mexican-southern spices is faint and addictive. I've definitely added this to places I know I can trust to stop by and get some good chicken. Highly recommend

They were down to the scraps of what food they did have left, which wasn't much, but okay, we get that. We made do. But, when the waitress came to take our drink orders, she said they were out of sweet tea. Hmmm.. it takes about 5 minutes to make tea, but whatever. My husband made a comment, "man, y'all are out of everything" The waitress had such an attitude & said "we got hit hard" in a way that just seemed so argumentative. We sit and continue to eat what we were able to get & i noticed that they had not put cornbread or a roll on my plate. My husband walked back up and asked and they said they were out of cornbread. So, he would take a roll. They said they were out. It is hard to believe that there was not 1 roll in the place. Anyway, the quality of the food was nothing at all to brag about. But my main issue was how rude the waitress had been. So, while he was paying (full price mind you- even for a 3 yr old's lemonade but again, whatever) I walked over to the waitress. All i said to her calmly & nicely, was "i think you could have had a better attitude" She snapped back immediately. She said i think he could have too, talking about my husband. She said we came in at the end of day. Seriously? And that we gave the line guys a hard time. And that we talked about it the whole time we were there. Not so!! When i went to answer and say something to her she got up and said she was not gonna talk about it anymore and stormed off. I am 99% sure i will not return. Not because of the mediocre food. Not even because of the lack of choices. But the very poor customer service did for me. I guess i was expecting something along the lines of "i am so sorry we are out of so much. Please don't let this deter you from visiting us again"
