Ate there today with hubby and two friends. The banana pudding was just OK and not wonderful as I expected from other reviews. But everything else exceeded the high expectations I'd had from reading reviews. Chicken was best ever. Salisbury Steak was even better. Veggies were all excellent, even the orka which I'm not a big fan of. My hubbies fav was the stuffing which I had to agree was pretty darn good although I didn't have much because I was saving room for other things. My wife and I were passing through Montgomery, when we decided we were hungry. My wife did two different AI restaurant searches and Martha's Place came up on both searches, as highly recommended and one of the best-known country cooking / soul food spots in Montgomery. Martha's Place it is... [[HIGHLIGHT]]Upon arrival, Martha's place looked very upscale. Very nice building and many Mercedes and Cadillacs were parked out front.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We started to wonder if we'd wandered into some rich neighborhood where the prices would be sky high! We walked in and a young lady greeted us and told us that lunch was $14 including a drink. GREAT! Everyone in the restaurant was amiable and helpful. (Staff and customers). We went to the buffet and loaded our plates with beautifully fried chicken and meatloaf for our proteins. For our sides we had collards, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas a couple of pieces of cornbread and some banana pudding for dessert. Then, the first weird thing happened. As we took our seats, the waiter that helped us get seated, told us that they only had one fork and one knife. We assumed he meant he would go back to the kitchen (or the dishwasher, or wherever) and get us another set. Meanwhile, the food looked SO GOOD, we immediately began sharing the fork and taking turns. MAN! THIS FOOD WAS GREAT! After a couple of minutes, we noticed the second weird thing... we were the only two white folks in the entire, crowded restaurant. And there were LOTS OF PEOPLE. They also do a huge to go business, so, the buffet station stays pretty busy with people coming and going. But, during the entire time we were there, there was not a single non-black customer in the house, except us. Not an employee. Not a customer. Not even a to go customer, just passing through - NOBODY. After about 5 or 6 minutes of taking turns with the fork, we decided our server must've forgotten about us. So, my wife went and asked and was informed they still didn't have any forks. (No. We were not being singled out, as my wife heard them tell another customer the same thing.) My wife asked if they had some plastic utensils, used for to go orders. They were able to oblige. Back to the food... The fried chicken was as good as any I've ever had and much better than any I've had in recent memory. The vegetables were also seasoned and prepared as good as any I've ever had - in a restaurant OR at home. The cornbread didn't have real corn in it, (like I prefer) but it was still some KILLER CORNBREAD. And the nanner puddin' was off the charts. I REALLY WANT some more of that nanner puddin'!! The staff were friendly and helpful and I have no idea why we were the only white folks in attendance. Maybe it was just a weird coincidence. But, I'll tell you this. The nice people at this restaurant KNOW HOW TO COOK. And I highly recommend this restaurant to ANYBODY -- No matter what color you are! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and we look forward to dining there again, the next time we pass through Montgomery. Go here. You won't get a better country meal - anywhere. Came for the fried chicken but left surprisingly impressed with the fried fish. Good chicken here. The fish was just done right; loving it. Decent selection of foods. All sides were good. Okra was surprisingly well done, and I don't even like to eat okra... the banana pudding tasted like banana taffy to me lol. Still very good... was almost all gone by end of the day. Debbie was our waitress and she was very nice. This was our first visit and she explained everything. You pay for the buffet on arrival, take a seat, provide drink order, and help yourself to the buffet which includes meat, vegetables, bread, salad bar and dessert. Guests are asked to sanitize their hands and wear a glove when serving themselves. The food was hot, well seasoned, and replenished frequently. There is plenty of seating and parking for larger groups. I look forward to visiting again. read more

We were with a large group (18), from an hour and a half away, that had made arrangements far in advance to have lunch. We were told it was Senior Day, and there was a discount. When we arrived, they were not prepared for us at all. The lady at the reception desk was rude, would not give us the discount, and charged each of us a 22% gratuity. They were confused about where to seat us, and after they showed us to a general area, complained that one group sat at a wrong table! We had to wear food service gloves to serve ourselves at the buffet that looked nothing like the pictures on the website. The food was very ok. On a recent day-trip to this area, my friend and I decided to stop here for a bite to eat before heading back. The Mac and cheese was delicious, collards were a little salty, and the dressing was very good despite it looked similar to stovetop but I found it to be homemade. The cornbread muffins were nice and buttery. My friend didn't care for his selection of food, unfortunately I don't remember what he ate. I didn't get dessert so I have no review on that. I saw banana pudding and carrot cake were available. The only drink options were tea and lemonade on this day since our server said the truck hadn't delivered yet that weekend. The server was ok. I would love to go back and try another protein option that I like. The cost for both meals came to $33. Not bad for a soul-food buffet in a nice building. I hit it and so glad I did! the fried chicken was perfect, all the veggies were perfectly seasoned. I went through the buffet and fixed a to go box. You pay by the weight of the box for a to go plate. I enjoy Tuesdays because it is chicken and dumpling day! Of course their fried chicken is good too and if you are lucky you can find a pulley bone! On Tuesday, they will also have squash casserole, turnip greens, fried okra and more veggies. Be sure to include some corn bread! There is also a salad bar which will include potato salad, pasta salad and maybe a couple of others with your salad and toppings. The buffet also includes desserts which is usually banana pudding and cake. An excellent deal for the price! The food is excellent! This place needs a solid 5 star!! If you want real homey soul food, this is the place to be. It opens at 11am on weekdays but there is always a few people waiting 15 minutes before it opens. It is very popular amongst the locals. Since we got there right when it opened, we did not have to wait for a table. The ambiance is very nice, open, clean and lots of space/tables. Everything on the menu was just delicious, be the the juicy fried chicken or the salads or the meats or the banana pudding. With so many options, anyone who eats here is bound to find dishes they like. They even serve complimentary iced tea and lemonade with unlimited refills. The service is excellent as well.
