My wife and I were passing through Montgomery, when we decided we were hungry. My wife did two different AI restaurant searches and Martha's Place came up on both searches, as highly recommended and one of the best-known country cooking / soul food spots in Montgomery. Martha's Place it is... Upon arrival, Martha's place looked very upscale. Very nice building and many Mercedes and Cadillacs were parked out front. We started to wonder if we'd wandered into some rich neighborhood where the prices would be sky high! We walked in and a young lady greeted us and told us that lunch was $14 including a drink. GREAT! Everyone in the restaurant was amiable and helpful. (Staff and customers). We went to the buffet and loaded our plates with beautifully fried chicken and meatloaf for our proteins. For our sides we had collards, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas a couple of pieces of cornbread and some banana pudding for dessert. Then, the first weird thing happened. As we took our seats, the waiter that helped us get seated, told us that they only had one fork and one knife. We assumed he meant he would go back to the kitchen (or the dishwasher, or wherever) and get us another set. Meanwhile, the food looked SO GOOD, we immediately began sharing the fork and taking turns. MAN! THIS FOOD WAS GREAT! After a couple of minutes, we noticed the second weird thing... we were the only two white folks in the entire, crowded restaurant. And there were LOTS OF PEOPLE. They also do a huge to go business, so, the buffet station stays pretty busy with people coming and going. But, during the entire time we were there, there was not a single non-black customer in the house, except us. Not an employee. Not a customer. Not even a to go customer, just passing through - NOBODY. After about 5 or 6 minutes of taking turns with the fork, we decided our server must've forgotten about us. So, my wife went and asked and was informed they still didn't have any forks. (No. We were not being singled out, as my wife heard them tell another customer the same thing.) My wife asked if they had some plastic utensils, used for to go orders. They were able to oblige. Back to the food... The fried chicken was as good as any I've ever had and much better than any I've had in recent memory. The vegetables were also seasoned and prepared as good as any I've ever had - in a restaurant OR at home. The cornbread didn't have real corn in it, (like I prefer) but it was still some KILLER CORNBREAD. And the nanner puddin' was off the charts. I REALLY WANT some more of that nanner puddin'!! The staff were friendly and helpful and I have no idea why we were the only white folks in attendance. Maybe it was just a weird coincidence. But, I'll tell you this. The nice people at this restaurant KNOW HOW TO COOK. And I highly recommend this restaurant to ANYBODY -- No matter what color you are! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and we look forward to dining there again, the next time we pass through Montgomery. Go here. You won't get a better country meal - anywhere. Came for the fried chicken but left surprisingly impressed with the fried fish. Good chicken here. The fish was just done right; loving it. Decent selection of foods. All sides were good. Okra was surprisingly well done, and I don't even like to eat okra... the banana pudding tasted like banana taffy to me lol. Still very good... was almost all gone by end of the day. First time visiting this place with some friends. Food was good. The buffet always had a line maybe organized it a better way. The customer service was not good at all. We were with a large group (18), from an hour and a half away, that had made arrangements far in advance to have lunch. We were told it was Senior Day, and there was a discount. When we arrived, they were not prepared for us at all. The lady at the reception desk was rude, would not give us the discount, and charged each of us a 22% gratuity. They were confused about where to seat us, and after they showed us to a general area, complained that one group sat at a wrong table! We had to wear food service gloves to serve ourselves at the buffet that looked nothing like the pictures on the website. The food was very ok. Was passing through Montgomery today and looking for southern cooking- googled and Martha's Place came up with rave buffet reviews. I hit it and so glad I did! the fried chicken was perfect, all the veggies were perfectly seasoned. Love that they take extra precautions and ask you to wear a glove when serving yourself- more should. I ate till i was too full to move - more than your monies worth:)). it is well organised, clean, with pleasant employees, and lots of customers...that tells ya all you need to know - folks LOVE it. On a recent day-trip to this area, my friend and I decided to stop here for a bite to eat before heading back. This is a classy restaurant that serves carry-out as well as a buffet meal complete with dessert and a drink. Management asks (via signage) that you use hand sanitizer and gloves when getting your food, which is unique but greatly appreciated. We paid for our meals and chose a table. There was ample seating inside. Upon entering, I saw there were only 3 meats available on this day. I would've love a fish option, but decided to try the roast beef as my protein option. I'm wasn't a fan of it. The Mac and cheese was delicious, collards were a little salty, and the dressing was very good despite it looked similar to stovetop but I found it to be homemade. The cornbread muffins were nice and buttery. My friend didn't care for his selection of food, unfortunately I don't remember what he ate. I didn't get dessert so I have no review on that. I saw banana pudding and carrot cake were available. The only drink options were tea and lemonade on this day since our server said the truck hadn't delivered yet that weekend. The server was ok. I would love to go back and try another protein option that I like. The cost for both meals came to $33. Not bad for a soul-food buffet in a nice building. I went through the buffet and fixed a to go box. You pay by the weight of the box for a to go plate. I enjoy Tuesdays because it is chicken and dumpling day! Of course their fried chicken is good too and if you are lucky you can find a pulley bone! On Tuesday, they will also have squash casserole, turnip greens, fried okra and more veggies. Be sure to include some corn bread! There is also a salad bar which will include potato salad, pasta salad and maybe a couple of others with your salad and toppings. The buffet also includes desserts which is usually banana pudding and cake. An excellent deal for the price! The food is excellent! There are plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your food. With that option there is a standard price for the buffet. Martha herself is a true success story. To fully appreciate Martha you should read her book about her life. She is an amazing woman! The restaurant is closed on Mondays. Sundays they are only open for lunch. A true Montgomery icon. Don't miss some true southern cooking! read more

She told us that even though she faced many hardships she was able to surpass them and when no one believed in her, she opened her restaurant.She has a few children and is very proud of their accomplishments. She talked about how she tried to commit suicide and I explained that I was on the board of 211.org a national organization that helps prevent suicide and more. I asked her to spread the word. Very practical, no nonsense southern cooking buffet. The menu changes daily. They just have the one buffet bar, so you do not have an over abundance of options. Great value in Soul/Southern food. A wonderful place to get excellent fried chicken, collards, cornbread and cornbread dressing. Drops off a bit after that. Mac and cheese just ok. Skip salad as there is really nothing worth wasting your food capacity on, just get more chicken. Same as far as dessert. They are still into contact precautions with paper plates which cheapens the feel of the meal but this is a minor inconvenience. We are from out of town but it was clear who the regulars were and it really left you with a family vibe! The food: totally delicious. This place needs a solid 5 star!! If you want real homey soul food, this is the place to be. It opens at 11am on weekdays but there is always a few people waiting 15 minutes before it opens. It is very popular amongst the locals. Since we got there right when it opened, we did not have to wait for a table. The ambiance is very nice, open, clean and lots of space/tables. Everything on the menu was just delicious, be the the juicy fried chicken or the salads or the meats or the banana pudding. With so many options, anyone who eats here is bound to find dishes they like. They even serve complimentary iced tea and lemonade with unlimited refills. The service is excellent as well.
