Came for the fried chicken but left surprisingly impressed with the fried fish. Good chicken here. The fish was just done right; loving it. Decent selection of foods. All sides were good. Okra was surprisingly well done, and I don't even like to eat okra... the banana pudding tasted like banana taffy to me lol. Still very good... was almost all gone by end of the day. Some of the things that didn't do it for me was the gravy and the corn bread. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Plenty of dining area and parking.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Nice place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

On a recent day-trip to this area, my friend and I decided to stop here for a bite to eat before heading back. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a classy restaurant that serves carry-out as well as a buffet meal complete with dessert and a drink.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Management asks (via signage) that you use hand sanitizer and gloves when getting your food, which is unique but greatly appreciated. We paid for our meals and chose a table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There was ample seating inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Upon entering, I saw there were only 3 meats available on this day. I would've love a fish option, but decided to try the roast beef as my protein option. I'm wasn't a fan of it. The Mac and cheese was delicious, collards were a little salty, and the dressing was very good despite it looked similar to stovetop but I found it to be homemade. The cornbread muffins were nice and buttery. My friend didn't care for his selection of food, unfortunately I don't remember what he ate. I didn't get dessert so I have no review on that. I saw banana pudding and carrot cake were available. The only drink options were tea and lemonade on this day since our server said the truck hadn't delivered yet that weekend. The server was ok. I would love to go back and try another protein option that I like. The cost for both meals came to $33. Not bad for a soul-food buffet in a nice building. I had a great experience overall and highly recommend Martha's Place.

Ate here today, the food was amazing as always as was the service! Fried chicken was cooked to perfection and the skin was crispy and delectable! I had a plate of veggies, squash, lima beans, collard greens and black eyed peas! Cant wait to go back!

We went here with our group. This a nice, simple, homey restaurant. It is a serve yourself buffet where you need to wear gloves to get food. The food is southern style. There is fried chicken, baked chicken, collard greens, salad, mac and cheese and more. Our waitress got us drinks and she was very friendly. Martha spoke to us about her past and her struggles. She told us that even though she faced many hardships she was able to surpass them and when no one believed in her, she opened her restaurant. She has a few children and is very proud of their accomplishments. She talked about how she tried to commit suicide and I explained that I was on the board of 211.org a national organization that helps prevent suicide and more. I asked her to spread the word. This is certainly a must go to place if you're in Alabama.

This a nice, simple, homey restaurant. It is a serve yourself buffet where you need to wear gloves to get food, hence why I was unable to take pictures. The food is southern style and there is a variety of options to choose from. I went for lunch with a large group of educators and the place was fairly empty so the buffet was not busy. Our waitress got us drinks and she was very friendly. Towards the end of our lunch Martha came to the back room where we were eating and she spoke to us about her past and her struggles. She told us that even though she faced many hardships she was able to surpass them and when no one believed in her, she opened her restaurant. She was very touching and made several people in my group cry. This is certainly a must go to place if you're in Alabama.

For lunch, I ordered the Oxtails plate (served with white rice + cornbread) with a choice of three sides. I opted for the Baked Mac & Cheese, Steamed Cabbage, and Luscious Collard Greens. The taste of the food was fantastic. The savory oxtails smothered in gravy were tender. All of the sides were flavorful and met expectations. For everything, it was priced at $29.99, which was quite reasonable considering the portion size. The inside of the restaurant was cozy with a family-friendly diner feel. The music playing was very entertaining. Each table had a great variety of condiments available, including hot sauces, ketchup, mustard, etc. Overall, J.W. Beverette's Soul Food was a solid choice for experiencing comforting, delicious soul food. If I weren't visiting from California and resided in Alabama, I'd totally be a regular customer at this restaurant. I will be sure to visit here should I travel to Alabama again.

The collard greens and fried okra were good. I like the dressing, but kept picking out bone fragments from it when eating. The meat was for the most part tender but over cooked. It was still good though. We will definitely eat here again. I will order two helpings of that cabbage. Great stuff!

I'd recommend the dark meat as it was better. I had the greens, mashed potatoes, and black eyed peas. The greens could use some salt but everything else was 10/10. The place is not the cleanest-- floors needed vacuuming, chairs were held together with duck tape.. but I pressed on hoping the food would redeem the space. Service was friendly. However, it was awkward listening to the waiter/waitresses/hostess/ kitchen staff have a conversation with each other across the entire restaurant. This was especially true after a patron sent something back and the kitchen came out loudly exclaiming that they wanted to see the food that "wasn't good enough." I had the fried chicken, greens, okra, and mashed potatoes. The chicken was fantastic. Perfectly cooked, juicy, and the tastiest fried skin/breading. That's where the goodness stops. The turnip greens were flavorless and complete mush, as though they had been sitting on the heat all day. Mashed potatoes were clearly from a box based on the consistency, color and flavor. Gravy had no flavor as well. There wasn't enough salt on the table to make it all better. The okra came out about 15min after we got our plates. It was fresh, but again, flavorless. My husband had the fried pork chop. It was just okay -- cooked well, zero flavor. Butter beans were good flavor wise, but definitely seemed to have been sitting for a while. It was odd to us that the only things you could get to drink were water, tea, lemonade, milk, and coffee. The second star is only for the chicken. I doubt we'll go back because the above experience for $50 is not worth it.
