For me the star of the show is the Shrimp Po'Boy. A lemon aioli, fresh greens and tomato top the shrimp on a fresh sandwich roll. With a nice bread-to-filling ratio it leaves me satisfied but not stuffed. I love, love, love this sandwich. What makes this truck stand out beyond the great food is what I love about all my favorite trucks and restaurants, the crew running it. I did not have high expectations because Puerto Rican restaurants do not make it very long in the Twin Cities. In fact, I am wincing just thinking that this place will not stay open long enough but hoping that since it is located in a working class neighborhood, it will get the proper respect it deserves. The place was non-descript, clean and modestly decorated. We were warmly welcomed by the "real deal"- I was so ecstatic! I am 100% Puerto Rican and my husband is Irish-Norwegian born and raised in MN but will eat almost anything from other cultures. I often lament where to buy ingredients for PR cooking no less get to sit down and eat a proper PR meal. He ordered the roasted Pernil with mofongo & the sweet plantains and I ordered the sancocho soup. The pork was beautifully seasoned and salted, the mofongo mash was tender and well seasoned. My Sancocho had the nice sofrito flavored broth and most of our dishes were surprisingly authentic. There were some things that could have been better though; we decided that we wouldn't order the sweet plantains again due to that they were not caramelized and sweet enough, they were cut too thick and were a little too uncooked in the middle for my taste. If they were cut thinner that may not have been the case but each PR cook does things differently. However, we have not found any place that can make good sweet plantains here in the twin cities, so not much of a disappointment. Our best have been at Brasa Minneapolis but even then they are hit or miss. My only issue with the Sancocho was that I was missing the corn cob in it so there was an overload of starchy vegetables which I love but it got to be too much. The Sancocho though had a generous portion of tasty meat and I ended up taking some home for later. My husband loved his dish and we will be back to try the arroz con gandules which is something we aspire to master in our own kitchen. We did not try the fried items (Epanadas, alcapurrias, etc.) because we did not want to eat that much grease but one day we hope to try it with a much larger group. I heard they sell frozen pasteles to make at home and I am excited to do this at a later date- $30 for a dozen. I met other locals that were originally from the island and come to be local regulars and it was nice to know there was now a place for theM to feel at home.
