I just had a very disturbing experience at the store in Montrose at the Indian Springs Plaza - a store I've been shopping in regularly for 17 years without incident. I went there around 8:30 this morning to buy some extra strength Pepto-Bismol for a very bad reflux episode I had even earlier this morning. (Normally, this is well-controlled by my daily dose of omeprazole; occasionally, though, there will be breakthrough episodes. Pepto helps relieve the effects of the acid that comes up.) This happened after I only got three hours sleep, so I was a little groggy on top of not feeling well generally.
Anyway, the woman at the front desk looked like a manager, but I didn't look closely or get a name. I can only describe her as somewhat tall and thin with graying hair pulled into a ponytail, and wearing glasses. I put my purchases on the counter and said hi, and almost before I finished doing that, she barked "Phone number?" at me, which in my current state mostly just alarmed me. Then I just reached into my wallet and took out my red CVS card, which she scanned. I paid, and when she asked me if I wanted my receipt or to get it emailed to me, I requested email, thanked her, and left.
Then as soon as I got to my car, I opened one of the two bottles and swigged some, because I needed relief that badly. I noticed it tasted a little watery, and that's when I noticed that I had accidentally bought the store brand, instead of the name brand. So I immediately went back in, and when she saw me, I just told her what happened and went back to the shelf to get 2 bottles of the name brand (Pepto). At this point I'm still a little out of it (but not so impaired I can't drive). At first I had walked up to her and said "excuse me" to get her attention. Again, she was curt with me and said "Just a minute!" (as if she had three other customers to help or something, except that she didn't - I was the only customer in the place). I wasn't so sick that I didn't find this attitude offensive, so I just left the unopened/unwanted bottle at the front desk (which I had already paid for), then headed for the self checkout machines. I decided to just pay for the two new bottles, since it was my mistake, and time was of the essence. I could hear her say "I have to do a refund" (in the exact same curt tone). I explained to her that I didn't have a paper receipt, that I had requested an email receipt. (Since the transaction had literally just happened minutes before, I feel like she should've remembered this, but whatever.) She just kind of shrugged and made a face, and made no further effort to process a refund. Again, this was fine with me because I wanted no more interaction with her, but mostly because I just wanted to get my medicine and get some relief as soon as possible!
The first checkout machine I went to was closed, which I heard her call over to tell me, so I moved over to another one. Honestly, my only intention was to ring up the two new bottles and go. Since I wasn't feeling all that well, my brain wasn't really cooperating with the machine. But not once did I raise my voice or do anything else that would warrant what happened next. An assistant had walked up to the front, got on the loudspeaker, and repeatedly called for security! At which point I calmly restated that I didn't need a refund since it was my mistake, and that I would just pay for the two new bottles at the self check out. I finally managed to complete this process and left the store. (I was pretty sure they didn't even have security on the premises, since no one ever came; I suspect that this was just said to harass/threaten/intimidate me. Luckily, I work in the legal profession, and I am therefore a very difficult person to threaten or intimidate, even when I'm sick!)
I'm not usually at the store at this hour on a Saturday morning; normally I would be fast asleep. There is a male manager that I typically deal with when I shop there, who is never anything but courteous and helpful at all times. But this other person's horrid behavior left a really bad taste in my mouth.
It looks like Rite Aid and Walgreens will be getting all my drugstore business from now on. read more
