When I called Monroe Pharmacy to complain, and asked for a reimbursement, they explained that the reason for this was that they do not get the manufacturer's discount that larger chain type pharmacies (CVS and Walgreens) get. I wish they would have been transparent all along and told me that I would be paying more with them as a result, $65 more. I cannot afford to pay more than my insurance copay. Also, I want to feel safe and trust the pharmacy I do business with. Now, I understand that it's important to shop around and make sure the pharmacy you choose is offering you the best price in accordance to your insurance and neighboring pharmacies. While shopping, I noticed two employees at self-checkout focus their attention entirely on me. Despite having only eight items--far fewer than others checking out--I was watched, followed, and made to feel as though I was doing something wrong simply by existing in that space. What should have been a simple shopping trip turned into a display of implicit bias and profiling. I was attempting to complete two separate transactions, a normal process that seemed to suddenly become a problem for your staff. The unnecessary remarks, the hovering presence, and the invasive scrutiny were both unprofessional and unsettling. When I addressed the issue directly--pointing out that not every individual of my ethnic group behaves the same way--it appeared to baffle one of your employees. Rather than reflect on my words, she attempted to correct me, further exposing her own assumptions. I reminded her that making assumptions without evidence is the root of bias, and that following and observing someone based solely on perception or stereotype is unacceptable. What made the situation more disturbing was the contrast: multiple white customers with overflowing carts stood unbothered in the "13 items or fewer" section, yet I, with my eight items, became the focus of scrutiny. This is not a coincidence--it's a pattern that many people of color recognize all too well. No one should be made to feel criminalized for existing. No one should be treated like a suspect for simply trying to make a purchase. The entitlement to stand behind a customer, to invade their personal space, and to assume authority over them reflects a deeper, systemic problem that goes beyond customer service--it reveals unconscious prejudice at work. I will not be returning to this location, nor will I spend my money where basic respect is not extended equally to every customer. However, I hope this serves as a wake-up call. This type of conduct does not just harm the person it targets--it harms your brand, your integrity, and the humanity we are all supposed to share. Discrimination--whether conscious or subconscious--has no place in your store, your staff, or any environment that serves the public. Worse: it was during Thanksgiving, so many local pharmacies were closed or with reduced hours. Enter Vogel Pharmacy, courtesy of my Google search. They not only knew exactly what to do to get my prescription from CVS (New York City) but promptly got the stuff ready. There's more. Because my insurance company is horrible, they under-cover the amount of migraine medication I need (only 9 tablets per months). I often have to pay out of pocket if I use more, and I've taken to using GoodRx, an app that negotiates -- much like insurance companies -- with pharmacies to get reduced out-of-pocket rates. (When you think about it, it's kind of an unsettling business model dependent on our donut hole of a health care system.) Vogel Pharmacy told me that the "good rate" GoodRx had was actually a total scam and inflated and that they could reduce the price by almost 80%. They could have been dishonest and just gone with the GoodRx rate, but they didn't. Integrity! Not enough of it, but it was here in Beacon. In the past, you know I've been an 1848 Communist Manifesto socialist -- one who believes that centralized economic systems are a critical springboard to eventual state takeover, then communal 'withering of the state." And I'm typically skeptical of small-is-beautiful localism (see my forthcoming book ALL HEALTH POLITICS IS LOCAL for a meditation on this). But Vogel Pharmacy make me reconsider; would CVS have done this for me? Not a chance.

It's a traditional local town pharmacy were the pharmacists "wants" to know you personally and genuinely cares that you feel better. This level of service is something you'd come to expect from the local traditional pharmacy which no longer exists. In modern day society we have the likes of CVS, Walgreens, etc were your prescription is automated and you "drive thru" because those big box franchises are simply providing you an automated service. Get your medicine and get out our face! That's the big box franchise way. At Cure the pharmacist/owner actually, and genuinely, cares about your well being. How do I know this? My first experience was nothing less than absolutely stellar!! The pharmacist spoke to me like I mattered and when my doctor failed to electronically send my prescription the pharmacist went above and beyond to call my doctor to inquire about my electronic prescription. This isn't something I expected and would have done myself but the pharmacist showed genuine empathy toward me and expressed real delight in helping me so that I wasn't pre-occupied or worried about my prescription. WOW!!! Just WOW!!!! I haven't seen or experienced service like this since I was just a teen. If any of the Goshen locals are still missing the old Baxter family pharmacy that closed down, rest assured Cure is here to fill that void and in a profound way with care, compassion, empathy and love. Never have I felt such genuine care filling medicine in decades. I thought when I walked through the front door I stepped through a time machine because who cares like that in the 21st century, well the Cure pharmacist staff does!
