Cute and elegantly decorated small bistro on Main run by Chef Gilbert Henry, originally from Alsace, France. Country French style with emphasis on local ingredients and healthy preparation. Lots of excellent wines with good recommendations from "Gilly". Friendly, neighborly atmosphere with Gilly making sure everyone is happy with their dining. The oysters (huitres) are the best I've had and some people in our group who normally don't like them eat them only here. The Coquille St. Jacque and the Cassoulet were our group's favorites. It is already a favorite with locals in the know and will soon have people coming from far as well as near to experience Chef Gillys great little place. read more

Lovely and well priced Prix fixe with a selection of appetizer or dessert. I had a Caribbean fish dish that was well spiced with a melange of vegetables. The mussels appetizer was delicate with a lovely lemon bechamel. My husband had the braised shirt ribs with yams and they were delectable. The chocolate mousse was light and fluffy and the creme brulee was excellent. Cuvee is the gem of Carlton. read more

Cute little French bistro in a neat little town in wine country. We liked the decor, the waiter was attentive (and funny as hell), the food quite good. The bread is made by the chef, which is a big plus. We started with a mushroom dish that was rich and flavorful. The specials were a salmon and a beef bourgogne, (we ordered both) and were excellent. Big portions too. The wines available were either local or French, and we had a bottle of Belle Pente Pinot Noir, which was pretty reasonably priced, and excellent. The desserts that we saw other tables having looked great, but we stuffed and passed. We stayed down the street at The Carlton Inn, and they recommended this place. Glad they did. read more

Coming from Portland, a day visiting Oregon's wine country is a mixture of adventure and terrific surprises. Carlton is composed of hundreds of acres of portrait-worthy landscape, many of which produce the myriad of perfect pinot noirs, giving the area an irresistible romantic appeal. Given Carlton's fame for its wonderful meat, it should be expected that the local restaurants would also live up to expectations. Regrettably, not everything is so perfect in paradise. While Cuvee has received several positive reviews (as much from online and local sources), it came up short trying to meet our expectations. Small and quaint, the restaurant nonetheless has a casual elegance which is appropriate for dining after a day of wine tasting. It's comfortable but classy, with tea light candles at each table waiting by folded napkins in ready anticipation of guests. The service was attentive and accommodating, and the chef took a few moments to check in on us, which is always a welcome gesture. Our meal started with a very good bread which was baked in house. I had salad (a simple plate of lettuce and cranberries with a good mustard vinegarette), and she had the soup (pumpkin bisque, also very simple but not unappealing). We enjoyed a bit of wine and didn't have to wait long for our entrees to arrive. The first thing I noticed was how good her beef bourguignon looked (at least to me!), and I have to admit that I thought it tasted pretty good as well. Ultimately, however, we both agreed that it lacked salt, and the regrettable truth was that the meal lacked the artisanship that you're looking to pay for at a restaurant. My ribeye and pommes frites were enjoyable, but disappointing for the same reasons. Foremost, my steak was not cooked to order (I asked for medium rare, and the waiter repeated it back to me, but this steak was certainly medium well and tough enough in some places to even be cooked closer to well). The fries were good, but looked like they could have come from a bag. The vegetables were completely lacking in salt or seasoning of any kind. It was really just sort of underwhelming. While the experience was not entirely negative, the lack of seasoning to both of our plates struck a nerve (do you agree with us that a proper restaurant should never require you to reach for the salt to really enjoy your meal?). The improperly cooked steak was another glaring offense, one that you simply can't get over when you're paying for a fine meal. Truth be known: I finished my plate. But after our last bites, the taste that was left in both of our mouths didn't exactly make us want to linger or explore the dessert menu. One final thought that may or may not affect your opinion on this restaurant: the fish of the day was a sesame mahi mahi served over teriyaki noodles. While it sounds good, doesn't it seem better suited to an Asian themed restaurant, rather than a French restaurant? Inconsistencies like this will ultimately hold a restaurant back in that frustrating "not quite there yet" spot, which in turn will keep patrons saying things like, "Good, but I wish that..." read more

Will never ever go back! On our first visit the food tasted good, but my husband got sick from the mussels they served that night. We decided to still give them another try...Later, I had made online reservations to surprise my parents for their anniversary. They dressed up and drove to the restaurant only to be told that they did not have their reservation down, and that the restaurant was closed for a private party. The owner had shut down the online schedule 3 days before, and totally failed to let them know. Instead of doing something...anything to accomadate them that night or even a different night, he totally blew them off. I was absolutely appalled at the way the owner runs this restaurant. Extremely expensive with very few options. The food is not worth the cost. My husband had steak and the one he had at a bar for way less was cooked to perfection and tasted better than what he got here. The service was nothing special and the drink choices are limited. You would never be able to bring children. Also, your option for cost is $30. That's it. So for 2 people to eat, without any drinks or extra frills, it costs $60. Excellent French cuisine unexpectedly in the small town of Carlton, OR. The chef/host/waiter was charmingly gruff as he basically commanded and approved of what we should order for our meals. My husband and the rib eye and pomme frites - one bite of the fries and I was in heaven. I had the Boeuf Bourguignon - and it was so rich I thought they were going to have to roll me out of the restaurant. That being said - we forced ourselves to try the Chocolate Mousse for desert and I'm so glad we did - it was delightful! If you find yourself exploring Willamette Valley I highly recommend detouring to Carlton and going here for dinner one evening - its well worth it. read more

Best fish we've ever had: a Hawaiin sea bass with the perfect crust. Killer Moroccan lamb stew with fall apart lamb, amazingly tender. Clams were done perfectly with delicious broth for dipping. Excellent dining experience. My wife and I went here for dinner on a Sunday night in the first week of October. They do a special on Sundays and Thursdays in which you get an appetizer, soup or salad, and an entree for $25. A great deal considering entrees alone are around $20. All of the food was excellent and the service was outstanding. Our server, Philipe, was serving six tables at once with no neglect for any table. He had an excellent knowledge of the food and the wine. He provided a phenomenal experience for us. We will eat here every time we visit Carlton. read more

This restaurant has all the makings to be perfect. Quaint atmosphere, heart of Carlton wine country, great local wines and nice French food. Unfortunately, the owner apparently has decided one server for 15 tables is sufficient. This place has two people working in total. Yes, you heard me correctly. ONE server and ONE cook to do everything - seat people, bus tables, clean and cook. After asking around, this is apparently the owners decision. It took 10 minutes to get seated for our already open table, 45 minutes to get a glass of water, over 1 hour before we got our first glass of wine and roughly 90 minutes before our entrees showed up. My Salmon was excellent, my friends pork was not so good. The poor lone server was amazing, literally running between tables with an effort that was impressive to say the least. However, there is only so much one person can do. If they had a little more help I'd give Cuvee 4 stars but unfortunately given the staffing 1 star is generous. read more

First of all, Cuvee is so not trying to be the French Laundry. To try and compare them is insane. Cuvee is a French restaurant that serves terrific food at surprisingly reasonable prices. The atmosphere is very pleasant, the staff attentive, and the wines, which are either local Oregon or French, are very reasonably priced as well. It's a pleasant surprise to have Cuvee here in our little town. We dined there last week. We ordered a bottle of Ghost Hill Pinot Noir, a tiny local producer, according to the waiter. Nice wine, nice price. We started with Clams Mariniere. Basically the same as mussels, but the waiter said the mussels that came in were no good, so they served them with clams instead. I can definitely respect that. The dish was flavorful and clams were very tender. I needed extra bread to soak up the broth, which was fabulous. We both had soup for the next course, which was a split pea with roasted vegetable. Nicely warming, and very tasty. For our main courses we had Beef Burgundy, served over Roasted Garlic mashed potatoes, and Tagine, which is a Moroccan lamb stew. Both dishes were excellent, and there was enough leftover that we took some home. We finished with a very interesting dessert: It was described as a hazelnut and raisin tart. It looked more cake-like than a traditional tart, but was terrific. The Chef is a hoot, but if he cooks like this, he can be anything he wants. We've been to Cuvee before, we'll gladly go to Cuvee again, and again, and again. read more

What a find! Cuvee was recommended to us and we drove by during the day. We actually thought it was closed down and couldn't beleive that the food we had heard about would be in that tiny storefront. When we drove back to see about dinner, we were greeted by a funloving and very efficient waiter as well as excellent food. The Prix Fixe menu was a terrific value! Won't be going back. Classic case of a place coasting on earlier reputation. Vegetable medley and "frites" were both clearly out of a packet; sauces insufficiently seasoned or reduced; meats overcooked; and worst of all, no evidence of local ingredients. If you care about where you eat and value locavore, I recommend you eat elsewhere. Only reason this place gets two stars is because the guy (Felipe?) serving front of house was great. My husband and I were here for our anniversary tonight. It was special because we had not been to Cuvee in several years due to their reservations being full etc. To begin with, we knew they had limited cocktails. I asked for a vodka martini with a splash of Chambord. Our waiter who happened to be the chef/owner-- asked me if I would like the vodka with fresh blueberries. Mais bien sur! It was fabulous. I think he mashed and strained the blueberries, and shook it with the vodka, adding 2 huge blueberries to the bottom of the glass. It was a lovely black/purple and tasted fantastic without the over sweetness that the Chambord can often provide. I asked him what he called it--he replied that he had never made it before. I can't wait to try to duplicate it with guests. The oyster appetizer was perfect with it's horseradish sauce, as were the pommes frites with the delectable remoulade. With our entrees came a soup or salad. The simple salad was perfectly dressed--the soup was a chilled tomato bisque in which I could taste cumin and garlic. I asked what were the other ingredients and he said it was sauteed fennel, sweet onion, tomatoes, nutmeg and just a little cream at the end. It was delicious. We shared the special lamb shanks and swordfish. Both were the best ever, however, what he did to the vegetables was to die for. The sauteed vegetables with the lamb shanks were sheer perfection. With the swordfish, was a marvelous ratatouille, and it was served over a couscous with an wonderful sauce and each bite with the swordfish and couscous was sheer perfection. For dessert, he suggested fresh berries in a light custard. The berries were cooked gently so not to burst in the oven but to explode in one's mouth--as they did. I have never had a bad meal here, but this one was over the top. Merci, Gilbert. We had a perfect anniversary dinner. read more

I love Cuvée. I love that it is small and intimate. I love that the owner, Gilbert, is the primary waitstaff. His very dry, very French sense of humor is always amusing. I don't mind that he occasionally sells out of menu items; this reflects that he purchases food only in smaller amounts, always guaranteeing its freshness. His escargot is unrivaled. Pommes frites are not to be missed. Meats are always tender and succulent, sauces rich yet understated. Even the lentils and rice are delicate, flavorful. And desserts! This place was extremely disappointing. Food is outdated bland and in need of a bucket of salt. We ordered the crab witch was horrid. It looked like a gray pile of mush. The steaks were sliced extremely thin but at least were cooked to temperature but they were smothered in a brown gravy. The fries were tasty. The soup and salad were meh. The pork chop was by far the best of what we ordered. It was over cooked but the sauce was tasty. The veggies were mushy and had no seasoning. Honestly all the food was the quality you would expect from your grandmas kitchen. The dessert was great. The wines were great. We won't be back save yourself the trouble head down to the barrel 47 they will serve you excellent food for half the price read more

We eat here every Memorial Day weekend when we come out to do wine tasting. It never disappoints! The specials are always a great choice--we really enjoyed the apricot tart on this last visit. Surprised that this higher-end restaurant doesn't deliver more for the price. Ordered a bottle of wine and told they were out (why not say that up front?) then told they were out of oyster appetizers. Asked about the type of salmon being served and the waiter had no idea. We had to ask for more bread, pour our own wine and waited 10 minutes for dirty plates to be cleared. Really? Denny's has more attentive service. My rib eye steak was thin and unremarkable; the duck was bland. Only the lamb stew was tasty. Even the creme caramel desert was flavorless. It was a Wednesday night with 4 other parties in the place, so we should have gotten top-notch service from the waiter and the owner. Too many other great places to eat in McMinnville and Dundee so I won't be back. read more

We had dinner here on a Friday night in June. It was wonderful. The decor is simple with nice art on the walls. The service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive from both the waiter and the owner. The mushroom appetizer and chocolate dessert were amazing. The beef bourguignon and pork were also very good. Now realizing this chef has done incredible things with seafood at another venue, I will make a point of ordering that next time. The wine list has enough variety in wine and price without being overwhelming. With so many wineries within shouting distance that is not easy! We went for the prefix meal. The owner has a wonderfully dry sense of humor and I think he is host, waiter and chef...which is impressive. We had vichyssoise and salad to start with. I make a killer vichyssoise at home, so we kind of have our standard. This one was ok, a little bland and lacked some depth. Then came the pork and salmon. Quite large portions and both dishes were nice. Husband really liked the pork. Lavender creme brulee for dessert. Again, I make a killer creme brulee at home. I wish there was a little more to do in Carlton a nice walk after dinner would have been fun. read more

We just returned from dinner at Cuvee. It was delicious! We shared a Caprese Salad for an appetizer- made with tomatoes from the chef's garden. It was bright and not over dressed. The salads that came with our meal were simple, had a nice dressing, and the yumminess of the lettuces could be tasted. Our inn keeper had called the restaurant ahead and let them know that we would be eating dinner, as I am a vegetarian, and the vegetarian plate was a mushroom mix in a creamy wine sauce over noodles -so good! And my friend had sesame crusted salmon over lentils with fresh, sautéed vegies - she really enjoyed it! Dessert was a chocolate mousse. The chef's has a quirky sense of humor, and all the staff were very pleasant and warm. Would definitely recommend. Will come back. read more

I'm not a big fan of mushrooms, so I got the Rib eye and fries. The steak was real good(I'm picky cause we raise our own) and the sauce very nice. The fries were way too good (my Dr. told me to stop eating French fries). They had a steak flavor and the dipping sauce was fantastic. My wife had some real tasty fish that I can't remember the name of. I waited 10 years to finally take my wife here for our 36th anniversary. I think we'll make it a tradition. read more

This is a quaint intimate place that is perfect for a date night. It is nearly impossible to get in without a reservation. Service was good, food was good. Meat was a little dry, but not disappointing. All in all, we had a wonderful time.
