I've been coming to Cutloose for years on and off, but there's really no place better! Now that I have my go-to style and stylist, I doubt I'll ever leave again. Parking: Parking is the only issue I have with Cutloose - it's right in the heart of Montrose and there's very limited parking options. They don't have their own parking lot so you do need to find street parking. I've always been lucky enough to get a spot pretty close, but depending on the day that can be a challenge. Price: Their prices are standard and I believe they do depend on your stylist. Ambiance: There's something cool and chill about Cutloose. There's some hustle and bustle, but I always feel comfortable and relaxed here. The staff is very friendly and you're always greeted in the entry area. I believe you're generally offered a beverage when sitting and waiting in the front as well. Other things to note: They do sell various hair styling products They have nice, clean restrooms Their front door can be a bit heavy and I believe has a step up. Finally decided to get a nice haircut after 2 years. I drive by this place all the time and always thought it looked cool and trendy so I decided to give it a try. I was pretty desperate for a haircut so I did not prior research on the hair stylist and instead just picked the person that was available at a time that worked for me. Chad did my cut and I was soooo happy with it. I have super thin hair with little to no volume and Chad cut + styled my hair perfectly. I left feeling like I actually had a full head of hair! He delivered exactly what I asked for + more! This is a pricey haircut ($80 + tip) but you really get what you pay for. I was excited about my haircut going into it but I left disappointed. I asked for bangs and to refresh my layers. I brought reference photos and have established what I believe to be a clear expectation of what I wanted. My appointment was with Kennedi. She was nice enough and there were certainly green flags- a consultation to begin, double shampoo, she told me what each product was going to help with. The haircut was just not it. And how she styled it was even worse. When I leave the hair salon I normally wait as long as possible to wash my hair after because it looks so good. After my appointment here, I went home and rewashed so I could style myself. When I do style it, it's fine- nothing special, definitely not worth $70. I found myself looking around at other patrons and being jealous that they had different stylists. The place was nice and I enjoyed the ambiance. I really don't understand how this salon has such a great reputation, I've had nothing but mostly horrible experiences over the 5 months I've been a customer. I cold called and asked to be matched with a stylist for a cut and color. My stylist was okay, the color was fine, but she refused to use toner and just pulled my hair color thru to blend. Her technique isn't what I expected but the results looked fine. I scheduled my next appointment with her and she either quit or was fired. I wasn't notified of the cancellation and showed up for my appointment after THEY emailed me and confirmed the appointment. I show up, AS SCHEDULED, but now you've wasted my time by not notifying me in advance that my stylist left and I desperately need my roots touched up. The girls at the front desk lied about trying to call me and tell me the appointment is cancelled. I have no calls from them or any unknown numbers so they FLAT OUT LIED about trying to contact me. I ask them to match me with a new stylist since I'm desperate to get my roots touched up. They pair with a wonderful stylist who is very skilled with hair cutting but I could tell his color experience was lacking. He consulted his partner with almost every step along the way. The results looked fine so I booked a second appointment with my new stylist. THE DAY BEFORE my appointment the salon calls me to "adjust" the appointment - my new stylist has to go back to "color school" and can't color my hair but he can give me a great cut. NO THANKS! I need the whole package. This was the the Friday before Easter and I have a headshot and cover shoot for a magazine scheduled on Monday with no one available to cover my roots before these major events. I am now paired with a new stylist and she's fabulous, the cut and color were perfect. I feel like I finally have found a great stylist here in Houston! However today, when I was supposed to have my second appointment with her, the front desk actually scheduled it for a week later than today. So I'm about to head back to LA with grey roots because of their scheduling error. The incompetent folks at the front desk have ruined my experience with this salon. I will not be back. read more

The color was perfect. Absolutely no stains on my face or neck or clothes. (Issue I'd had at a previous salon). And the haircut is super cute. Overall she was such a pleasure to hang out with, she did a great job, incredibly consultative. Ahhhh - I wrote that after my first visit. Melodie absolutely botched my hair and I am FINALLY speaking out on it. I pulled out an inspiration photo to show her what I wanted and she turned away and said, "I don't need to see a picture, I know what im doing". Um, yes you needed to see a picture because the outcome was nothing like what I asked for. I specifically said that I didn't want to come out having a mullet and that's exactly what she did. If she had looked at my picture she would've had a better idea of what I wanted. I cried for days, called in to work and had to pay a lot of money to get extensions put in the next day to even out my hair. I am still recovering from my haircut nightmare and it is painfully, slowly growing. I think it is a big responsibility to cut someone's hair and any input from the customer should never be dismissed. I am traumatized to ever let anyone touch my hair again. I had been looking for a stylist after moving here last year (2020), then the shutdown happened. So I waited and this year (2021) I finally decided to get a much needed trim (last trim was May 2019) and go blue with my hair. I had to make sure I could find a trust worthy stylist/salon. When coloring your hair - you know it's hard and can't just trust any salon or person. This place is super cute and small, but so full of personality! After a month long of research, I found Nita at Cutloose. She is not only amazing, but a super fun conversationalist! I did my session (7 hours) and the time flew by! I did a consult prior to my appointment since I have dark hair and wanted to go blue. She explained everything, showed me samples and even offered to do a trial on a piece of my hair. This is what set her apart from the other salons that I had consults with. If you're looking for a new salon/stylist - do not sleep on this place. Although, it was super pricey, I wouldn't do this every time, just once in a while. But I truly love my hair, it's exactly what I wanted! Everyone that worked there was super nice. I got this hair cut a little over a year ago and I absolutely LOVED it. It was my first time here at Cut Loose and Bryan Doty did an excellent job on the cut. I had an under cut that I was growing out and he was able to fix my hair into the mullet shape. The color? Not so much. I understand my hair was DARK like almost black and the bleaching portion seemed to go pretty well, but when I looked over my hair some parts were still patchy during the coloring process. In the 2nd and 3rd picture you can see a bit of pink and blonde on the ends of my mullet tail. And for it being a $400+ service (not including the Oribe Finishing Wax he convinced me to buy) I expected it to be completely lavender the way I asked. But nevertheless it was still really fun to have. The service took about 4-6 hours? Honestly not bad at all. I would definitely come back here again if I wanted to do something exciting with my hair... maybe I'll do platinum blonde in the future. All of the staff were so caring, the receptionists were lovely, an amazing vibe all around. I booked ahead of time for a women's cut ($80) with a gentleman named Chad, a little expensive but I kinda wanted to go somewhere fancy for once. It went incredibly well and I game him full rights to my hair since I didn't know what I wanted to do. I am kinda late to this review but this needs to be said. 2 weeks ago, I went to Cutloose to get my hair fixed. I went to an Aveda salon and they stained my hair blue with whatever pigment they used. I wanted to keep the blue but I wanted someone who actually understood what they were doing. Nita Pita is my hair angel! She was honest, kind, and extremely funny. She talked to me like an adult and told me what we could and couldn't achieve with my damaged hair. She was very considerate with the integrity of my hair and managed to get my hair to many gorgeous, vivid shades of blue! She also gave me a super cute shag cut that I love! Nita really revamped my sad hair! Thank you! On a side note: I bought the Davines products Nita recommended and they are amazing! They really work! It took about 20 minutes to get in the chair with her but she got to assess my hair, and felt very comfortable with the color request and assisted me with any questions I had about the different process options. I went to cutloose for a cut and partial highlights mid March with Bryan. I've been a customer there for 2 years. I've never had issues or complaints with any of my haircuts or color treatments in all the salons I've been to in the 4 states I've lived in the last 12 years. I'm not a complainer. Except this time my expectations were not met. I left the salon loving the haircut per usual. I wasn't sure about the color just yet. It seemed dark to me but I thought I'd see what I felt at home. First thing my husband and later my friends said when they saw me was "oh you went darker?" It looked darker than my natural color. Definitely was not partial highlights. Reciept said balayage. I emailed the salon told them my expectations were for lightening not to darken. I was told to give it a few weeks with some washes it will lighten up and also lighten up with the next treatment. I gave it two weeks still not happy with it. I emailed again was told I could come in for a hair consult and a shampoo treatment. That's it. I called and spoke with the receptionist and they said I'd have to book a separate appointment that would cost for a color correction. I asked to speak to a manager she said the manager would call me back. Few days later one of the managers Stephanie EMAILED me a one sided email. Saying I did not want to come in for the hair consult and there's nothing we can do. My time is just as important as yours I'm a busy mom 1 1/2 year old at home and was in the process of going through drs appointments and tests to find out what's wrong with my health. I am not going to come in unless I knew that something was going to be fixed not just to take a look and shampoo it. I responded to the email I was told I would be getting a phone call back not an email. No response. I reached out to BBB. In that time a few weeks later I got news that had cancer and needed to start a clinical trial in one week. Around that time the front desk manager Sahar called in response to the BBB complaint and she asked me to come in, again not saying anything will be corrected, "to take a look, you have to understand our stylist take pride and take time with their work" seems like this time your stylist has a little too much pride. I definitely didn't have time or the emotional bandwidth to put up with this nonsense at this horrific time in my life. I told her what had happened and that I can't come in for a hair consult, she didn't care, nor did her manager Stephanie. Clearly they saw me as just a dollar sign/number walking through the door that will be replaced by another 5 or more people because this is Houston and it's busy. I paid over $500 for my hair treatment with a good tip. I appreciate people and their time taken. Just not sure why I was not appreciated or respected as a customer. I'm glad other customers have found their salon, I would recommend them to people said that if we were to ever move I'd miss it. I told some people about what happened and they said they've never heard of a salon not wanting to fix a color a client wasn't happy with. And they will respond to this review with one way remarks putting it back on me saying they did everything possible to remedy the situation but I did not come in to see what they could do. Oh my gosh, Bryan was lovely! I waited until after I was fully vaccinated to get a professional haircut, so my hair was super grown out and shapeless. I told Bryan I wanted a complete transformation -- a short chin-length bob working with my natural wavy hair texture. Bryan did a thorough consultation when I first got in the chair, taking time to look through my inspiration photos, asking questions, looking at my hair texture, really talking through what I wanted. He customized the cut to work for my hair. It really felt like a personalized experience. He spent a lot of time explaining what he was doing and why, which was super helpful. And when it came to styling, he took the extra time to walk me through how I'd replicate his techniques at home. Not your typical ritzy salon that looks sterile and white.. It definitely has character and a uniqueness to it. They play old school hip hop and have a warm casual feel to it. This place isn't lacking employees with tattoos and crazy color hair (by crazy color I mean not the norm but so funky and definitely in style at the moment). They are a Bumble and Bumble salon and have a school upstairs which is cool. Very chill and relaxed feel. I followed my stylist from the old Solutions for Hair here. She worked her magic like normal.. I'm wondering if the colors will fade as well as the Aveda products but I guess we'll see. Gaby is awesome and does a pretty great bayalage. I've been coming to her for the past 2 years and she has not failed me. The staff at the new place are nice enough.. Not as chatty as the old crew at Solutions and they seem to chat among themselves and ignore customers.. But friendly enough. I wouldn't rave about the place but I also don't hate it. Prices may be a little steep for a place that doesn't shout ritzy. $260ish for a cut and bayalage color?! I guess I'm out of touch with prices cause I don't remember how much I use to pay.. Also a tip, they charge $50 if you're more than 15 mins late and if you cancel. I get it, I really do but sometimes Houston traffic just sucks.. And they don't have a parking lot. If you park on the side of the building, you have to pay the antique store $5. Which is a bummer.. They should buy the lot for customers! I have been so behind on my reviews. cutLoose is pretty much the best place I have been to so far to get my hair cut in Houston. My hair is hard to cut especially the sides. I had always seen this place across from agora which was my home away from home during post bacc at UH. Fast forward to 2016 when my stylist moved to Nebraska and cutLoose's random appointment generator hooked me up with Brian. I have been going to Brian for almost the last two years and he has been an absolute delight. I have had him cut my hair really short and also let it grow in the past where he was able to cut it so that it grew back proportionally. Last winter, I wanted to grow it out for Christmas pics and he showed me how to properly style it. Because of his extensive knowledge, I learned when to use which products for my varying hair lengths. The products they use at the studio not only smell good but also leave your hair feeling soft. At other places, my biggest pet peeve is that when you make an appointment, they keep you waiting and waiting because the person before you didn't show up on time. At cutLoose, so far - *knocks on wood* - I haven't had to wait for more than 5-10 minutes from my appointment time. Bonus points for monthly drag shows with drinks! read more

I had my final appointment with Lizz prior to the holiday season. After coloring my hair red for nearly four months, I had decided that I was ready to go back to blonde. Lizz told me that it might take a couple of appointments to achieve my natural shade, but promised that I would be happy with the results. The appointment lasted over four hours, one hour of which was spent trying to tone my hair at the shampoo bowl. I should've realized that something was wrong when Lizz neglected to show me how the back of my hair looked before I left the salon. It wasn't until I got home later that night that I realized my hair was blonde in the front, maroon on the sides, and bright, bright orange in the back. I looked like a bowl of sherbet! Because of my holiday plans, I wasn't able to schedule a visit with Lizz to repair my color. I hopped on a plane and flew back to Ohio, where I promptly scheduled an appointment with my go-to hometown stylist. We encountered a few more color issues (namely, my hair turning neon orange when we tried to remove the dye that cutLoose applied to my hair), but I'm happy to say that I am now a very natural looking brunette... Although I won't be able to go blonde for at least six months. When I returned to Houston, I emailed Michelle Guzman, Owner of cutLoose, to discuss the possibility of reimbursement. At first she was polite, addressing my questions and concerns, and requesting that we set-up a meeting. However, once the meeting was scheduled, I received a follow-up email informing me that Lizz was no longer with the company. Because of this, cutLoose would not be able to reimburse any of my money. I was told that if I was looking for reimbursement, then I would need to contact Lizz directly. I responded by saying that I failed to understand how Lizz's actions (incorrectly coloring my hair and leaving the salon) were my responsibility to correct. It is never the job of the client to reach out to a previous employee to ask for a refund. I told Michelle that this was one of the poorest examples of customer service that I had ever encountered. I then received a final message from Michelle. She told me that only a special color remover should be used with the dye Lizz applied to my hair. She insulted my go-to stylist, calling her "small time" and "in need of updating on her training." She used my previous positive Yelp review against me, saying that she could not believe I expected a reimbursement when I had raved about my hair the first time around. She told me that "it's people like yourself that think nothing of trying to ruin someone's reputation without blinking an eye." She then told me the name of the product used on my hair, instructing me to "look it up." I'm sure that cutLoose has some talented stylists who are also skilled in customer service. I accidentally paid someone to ruin my hair last month at another salon. No really, I did. I felt sad all the time with my dark brown mess on my head with the medium brown roots and weird auburn bits trying to come through the darkness. After waiting a month and a half for my scalp to heal, I needed my hair fixed so I did some research on yelp during my week off with the family. Tracy did a consultation and told me jokingly to make me smile.. What? you don't like this dark brown stripe on the bottom? No? She estimated three hours to fix me and told me she had an opening in two days. Then she took out hair samples and we talked about what I really wanted it to look like. Two days later, feeling hopeful, I went in to CutLoose. Ladies and Gentlemen..........Tracy is the fairy godmother of good hair. I am not exaggerating. Somehow she... well with a lot of bleach, she took off all that nasty brown dye and then spent a lot of time mixing two different dyes for the crown and the ends. I now have a glorious reddish brown, realistic looking auburn that matches my real roots. My hair is all one color with cute natural highlights and not a horizontal stripe in sight. She even checked often to make sure my scalp wasn't burning or anything... a very realistic concern with my hyper sensitive skin but my scalp lived through the necessary trauma just fine. Then she did a great cut on me and a painstaking time consuming blow dry. I figured my hair was going to be toast and by the time all the dead stuff was gone, I'd be left with a bob of some kind. Not so.. I got to keep all my length save a half inch trim. Yeah it cost $215. So what? I paid 100 to have it ruined. Miraculously I have no breakage to speak of and my hair does not feel like straw. Tracy said I'm very lucky and should count it as my Christmas Miracle. Believe me I do and whenever I go see my family, I'm going to schedule a haircut with the good hair fairy well in advance to make sure she's available. How I wish she did business in Fort Worth. Thank you to the other yelpers for their great reviews on this salon. You definitely steered me to the right place and I'm very grateful. Maybe members on yelp should get a once a year super yelp award to give to a business. If I had that power I'd totally give the super yelp award to Tracy for saving my tresses. Nothing makes a girl feel bad or good as quickly as her hair and right now I feel fantastic. read more
