I was visiting from out of town and wanted to do a drastic cut (about 10 inches off for a chin length cut). I was able to easily and quickly get scheduled with one of their senior stylists. The cut turned out pretty good, but the 4 stars comes from the stylist having multiple clients at once, with an assistant doing the finishing touches/styling. I was not a fan of being passed off and I did not like how the gal was styling it. The master stylist had to come over several times to correct her. Overall, the salon is nice, clean and products are good. Just wish I didn't feel like a number when paying over $100 for a haircut. read more

I love my hair and the reason I love it is totally attributable to Elle and Gustavo at the Upper Hand Hyde Park. It's good that I love my hair. Because I have ALOT of it. It's extremely thick and somewhat wavy, but I keep it in a cropped wedge cut. If you're curious, just good "wedge cut" and search through the images. AND it's all platinum all the time for me. Elle does my platinum blonde like nobody's business. I have gone to see her once every 6 weeks or so for the past 2.5 years. Together, we have explored the many different shade variations of platinum and she knows all about the circus that is my love life. Then, there's Gustavo, who handles my cut. It is seriously THE BEST haircut I've ever had EVERY TIME I step out of his chair. He's really, really good at short hair, and if you're someone who likes having short hair and hasn't had it cut by someone who really excels at cutting short hair, make an appointment with Gustavo immediately. You're in for a real treat. Besides the fact that Elle and Gustavo are just plain excellent at what they do, I think a lot of the reason I love my hair is because they have taken the time to get me. They are perceptive and understand what I want not just based on what I say and what pictures I may show. They pay attention to my personality, my mannerisms, my hobbies and interests. I originally rated 5-stars simply because I followed Morgan from another salon and she is amazing. Now that she has left and gone back to another location, I have to update this review as someone who might be looking for a new salon, and not based on the stylist. It is a very modern salon, but is very cold and I'm not talking temperature here. The stylists seem packed in to benefit the bottom line and not so much the clients. Unlike other salons, nobody talks to each other and it's just kind of awkward. There was a cool hipster guy live-streaming his haircut by "someone who's never cut his hair before" about 6 or seven chairs down during one of my appointments, and yes. I could hear it all. My stylist and I were both a bit take aback. It was really weird and very uncomfortable. While I am sure that the stylists here are very talented, it is priced on the high side and you likely will not feel comfortable. No online booking also brings it down a star. Add a star because they have that good nugget ice for your water. I think A-OK is a solid review. Do I think you'll look forward to seeing your stylist? Nope. Do I think you'll feel welcome there? Nope. Do I think you'll get good hair? Sure. I'll follow Morgan anywhere, because she is awesome. But as soon as I learned she was back at the other salon in the 'trose, I was very happy. I waited 48 hours to post this as I wanted to sleep on it to make sure I am being thoughtful. But every time I look in the mirror, I get angry with the results so it's time to give feedback. I went to the Upper Hand in Hyde Park and had Desiree. I chose it because of their review as being one of the Top 100 salons in the country. Really? I am doubtful and suspect that is a paid sponsorship. My experience there was awful. I was very clear in what I asked for. Full head of highlights with the outcome being light blonde, creamy colour. I showed an example picture of Cameron Diaz with the colour i wanted. I pointed to a swatch of hair at her station with the colour I wanted. I have been getting this style & colour for 22 years so i know what I want. The outcome? A warm dark blonde/brown with a clear demarkation of darker colour at my roots. Not only did she not deliver what I asked for, my roots are still incredibly obvious. In summary: 1. Not the colour I asked for at all. 2. Harsh demarkation of my roots (she didn't leave the highlighter on long enough on the top of my head!!!) 3. Told me "she thought I wanted warmth" but I never used that word nor pointed to that picture, or swatch, or asked for it. 4. She used a dirty plastic cheap brush on my very fine hair (any experienced stylist knows you should use natural bristles in a paddle brush) and so it hurt as she pulled. 5. At the end of the appointment when I was dumbfounded at how bad it turned out, she disappeared for 10 minutes to "ask a colleague" and comes back to tell me that her colleague agrees with her decision to use a different toner. I explain that the toner did not deliver the colour I asked for, so who cares? She was incredibly focused on telling me the process for colouring my hair and not at all concentrating on the outcome. She seemed totally clueless about how to colour blondes. What's frustrating is that when I called, i asked for a stylist who understood and did a lot of blondes. Clearly they didn't care. Do not go here. The salon was dirty. The brushes were dirty. The stylist i had was awful. read more

It may be a little difficult to book an immediate appointment with Phuong because she's booked so far in advance and requires a color consultation before your service so that y'all are on the same page on how realistic your hair goals are... BUT I really appreciated this talk because while I want the color to look great, I also want to maintain the health and integrity of my hair. This consultation is vital, ladies! Please be careful of Peyton doing your blonde hair. I went to her because she was a blonde specialist. However, a year after seeing her for platinum touch ups, she destroyed my hair. It took 2 years to grow my hair out to be able to wear down again. She left my hair under the heat too long and when she rinsed it out she pretended like nothing had happened. I watched her blow dry my hair out as half of my hair rained down on me and she pretended like nothing had happened. This would have been so less worse if she had owned up to her mistake and worked with me to fix it. I spent the entire lockdown with a legit bleach mullet, I had to repeatedly cut my hair to my ear to even out the breakage. She initially gaslighted me and told me it must have been something I had done to mess my hair up but after consulting with multiple hair dressers, they confirmed she made multiple huge errors. It literally look me 2 years to grow my hair out to be able to dye it again and wear it down.
