This salon is extremely overpriced considering the cost + quality of service, be very careful if you decide to get your hair done here, your wallet will def hurt. I decided to have my hair balayage with Phuong after I was impressed with her work on Instagram, I went through the consultation and was told that since my hair is dark and curly would take multiple visits to get my desired result, which I was fine with and already had anticipated. Before starting, I was asked (I forgot by whom) if I wanted to add a haircut for $90(!!!) additional dollars which I ofc turned down bc I thought that was a ridiculous price. I ultimately decided to not return because the placement of the color/bleach was awful. I was so embarrassed to wear my hair pulled back or up in a bun or pony for months because the start of the balayage was not gradual or seamless, my roots would be my natural color and then BAM you would just see chunks of lightened hair. For what I paid for, I expected so much more especially from their touted claim of being the "best colorists in Houston". Just because this was the first round/step in achieving the look I wanted doesn't mean my hair should look nearly unwearable and crappy while I wait to scrap up $ for the next visit. I did not want my hair blow dried after the balayage was done, Phuong went to go work on a different client since my hair took so long so the other person just rubbed some serum in and called it a day. CURLY GIRLS BEWARE, anyone with a basic knowledge of curly hair care knows serum is NOT enough to tame our hair! For such an upscale salon of this price and I know for a fact that certain stylists travel to attend training (Phuong told me), this should be known by any of your staff members who work on clients hair. I did not say anything because I trusted them and hoped that that would be enough. And lo and behond, my hair was extremely frizzy and poofy after I went out for lunch after the salon visit. I did not notice the shoddy placement until after the visit when my hair was dry and when I tried to put it in a ponytail. In previous salons, they would remove the extra cost of blowdrying from the overall service or at least the stylist would at least put in a proper leave in, hair cream, or gel/mousse, and finish with diffusing. I paid around $300+ for an extremely underwhelming experience and blue tinted toning shampoo that didn't even work. I was def too kind at the time to include a tip, this was an extremely hard, and especially expensive, lesson learned for me. My first visit was my last, I didn't want to go up to management to complain about my experience or the placement of the balayage because I am not a confrontational person and my overall impression just from observing the staff and others after my visit was that they would not give a d@mn anyway. Me, my shoddy balayaged hair, and my money are going elsewhere to get it fixed. read more

I dyed my hair/balayage for the first time ever back in December 2016 for my birthday, went back for a trim around February 2017, and am planning to book another appointment soon for another trim and toner. Only reasons I docked down a star is because I do have to make a long trek out to this part of town. Yes, this place is pricy but all products used are of high quality. I was in need of a cut and highlights before my vacation and was so happy Melannie had a cancellation to get me scheduled and in the week of my call. I called a month ago and she was booked out until the end of May! So book in advance cause she will be on a few vacays this summer and she is the hair wizard! (probably been reading a bit too much Harry Potter lately heh) They are quick to respond to you, even on Yelp! I made an inquiry and Brian, the owner, got back to me within the hour. The phone lines are a bit weird - I suppose when someone is on it, it just keeps ringing.. but try again! Cause once you get a receptionist, they will work with you and get you scheduled right away! I showed up about 3 minutes late for my appointment today and Melannie was already on the chair waiting for me. I quickly changed into a robe and I was good to go. We talked a bit about what I wanted and what she thought was best. If you're a new customer, she usually schedules a consult before even agreeing to seeing you. Luckily she's the last person to touch my hair so no consult was necessary. She will not do your hair if she thinks it's not possible or if it'll damage it way too much. Now that's a professional for ya! My hair is thin so as pretty as the light metallic colors are, I couldn't go that light without it breaking. The ends of my hair have been processed so many times, it was time to chop it all off and start over. I haven't had short hair since forever but I was comfortable in the hands of Melannie! She did a quick blunt chop and then hand painted the colors. Sit under the heat lamps, wash, tone and then the final cut and blow dry! I love the fade of the colors and how it all blends together and the cut was cute, though it'll take a bit to get use to! She even did some curls for me to make it wavy! I was contemplating coloring my hair for over three years now. For the last 7 years or so, I used blue black box dye on my hair (terrible, I know!). One night I was looking up balayage specialist in Houston and I came across Mary's account. I fell in love immediately. Last week I went to the Upper Hand and I was just shocked with the way I was treated and with the work they do. Prior to my consultation with Phuong at the Hyde Park location, I bought myself the BELLAMI Hair Extension BOO-GATTI set of 340G 22"inches (1C). I wanted to have really luxurious long, thick hair so I did my research to find the best hair stylist I can find that works on long layered hair. I found Phuong's Instagram and fell in love that she has so many clients with very long and thick hair. I made a consultation with her to make sure she can do for me what she has on her Instagram photos. I had the extensions on me and I showed her photos of exactly what I was looking for. Phuong explained to me that she can give me the look that I want, so I scheduled an appointment with her. On the day of my appointment I told Phuong that I wanted to keep the same length but I wanted to layer it just like the photo I showed her. She kept insisting to me that no one has long hair like that and since we are both short we should go for something more natural. I told her I don't really care about it looking natural and I don't want to cut it much since I like the length (reason why I paid extra for the 22 inch extensions). While Phuong was cutting my own hair, I had many negative and rude comments, even some legit laughs when they saw my extensions. Many of these nasty comments came from an employee standing behind the counter. It actually hurt my feelings and I felt attacked that I was ridiculous for wanting something so long. While I was getting the cut, the sarcastic comments continued, mainly from the woman behind the counter who was covered in tattoos. I do not like confrontations and I do not feel comfortable going back. Phuong cut my hair very short, choppy, and one side is longer than the other. She kept stating that it looks better natural but I did not know this was her perception of natural. I am not happy with the way my hair was cut. I spent $346.39 for my extensions and another $300 for the haircut. I have spent nearly $650 on my hair and it doesn't look like it. read more

PLATINUM BLONDES BEWARE, Elisa's general lack of care and attention to detail / time has ruined my hair!!! I found the upper hand hyde park on Yelp, and feel an obligation to let others know about my nightmare experience. How does this place have 4.5 stars?? Maybe other stylists are competent but even a non trained hair professional knows that you cannot leave scalp bleach on for 1+ hours. Not only is my hair damaged but the skin on my face is red, inflamed and appears to be chemically burnt from a sloppy application of the bleach. Elisa was more concerned with talking to the other stylists, then checking my hair as it was processing... Specifically, I heard her alarm to check my hair go off 3 times before she returned to her chair to check my hair. In addition to the poor service, the essentials of client service are severely lacking at the salon. After kindly expressing to Elisa multiple times that the temperature of the salon was freezing and I was uncomfortable (it was literally 45 degrees in Houston yesterday and they were running the AC), the client in chair on the side of me had a coat covering her legs to keep warm. Thoughout my appointment Elisa made several comments about me being "older" and more "high maintenance" than her current clients. She even went as far to say that the toner used on one of her clients was only fitting for that client because she was a dime, insinuating her thoughts about my outward appearance. News flash - I'm 30 which is hardly "old" and a stylist job is to make her clients feel good about themselves not to knock them down. I feel fine about my appearance but could see how her comments would be damaging to others. In any case, being unkind and degrading to your clients is unprofessional and should not be acceptable at a reputable business establishment. After having my hair professionally colored for the last 15 years, I can honestly say yesterday was by far the worst salon experience I have ever had... and my hair is ruined just in time for the holidays. Please be cautious before booking any service with Elisa, hope this saves someone else from a terrible experience. read more
