I returned in November to adjust an awkward stage in my hair. You know when the only thing that looks good is a pony tail or a bun? Nothing makes sense and the effort no longer feels worthwhile? So, I went back to see Stefani. I really like her. She is a great listener. She helped me out with a hair issue that has drastically improved the condition of my hair and gave me an "easy to style" haircut. I'm new in town and I was looking for a new salon, so I tried Shyn salon on the recommendation of my sister. I had a cut and style by James. He was great! He consulted with me and advised and I ended up with exactly what I was after. He then styled it exactly like the pic I brought in! I look forward to visiting James at Shyn again. The salon itself is really lovely and calming. It's a very pretty space with a welcoming front desk and great products. Davines products became my favorite while living in Europe, and it's not that easy to find a salon that uses their color/products. Give these guys a try. I have been seeing Casey for my cut and color ever since he opened Shyn and he does such a great job keeping my color up. I am naturally dark brunette and I appreciate his guidance over the years on my quest for blond. I love the chill vibe of this place. It's kind of like cottage-meets-soho loft if that makes any sense. Everyone here is very friendly and warm, from Vanessa and Johanna who greet you, to all the stylists, including Kip and Casey. (Might I add they offer you Diet Coke or wine. Um, hello.) But the reason I'm writing this review is to brag on Katarina Voss, the newest stylist. She is a master. I had cotton candy, bleached-out hair and this girl was able to take me to a natural looking blonde (still light, but natural!) without further damaging my hair. Her haircuts are genius, too. I tried SHYN again and it will be my last visit. I saw someone cheaper who gave me a full highlight and cut. We started at noon and prior to starting I asked if I would be done by 230 giving the stylist more than enough time and she also said I would be out of there before 230 as I had another appointment. That didn't happen. Not only did I get out of there after 300 and had to tell the stylist again I was missing another appointment (which I was charged for) and I was the only client in the salon. Finally, she finished and the salon's power had blown out so they could not run my card. I bought the Yelp deal and only received $50.00 off instead of $75.00. Let's just say I lost a lot of time and money that day. And while checking out, the guy at the front desk was incredibly rude. My hair looked good, much shorter than I expected though the color was spot on. Sadly, I can no longer recommend SHYN salon due to the price and lack of proper service. read more

I have kept going to see Stefani since I originally posted this review. She is the only hair person I have been to see in Houston consistently... everyone else made me feel awkward because I wasn't always spending money on more services or was too expensive or was tricky to talk to. Stefani helped me get started on some awesome dying stuff and their "mini highlights" session is really easy on your pocketbook as far as highlights go. Haircuts have continued to be awesome. My husband also goes here and she is really good with his very tricky hair, and helps us out if he needs a little something fixed every once in a while. Also, be sure to nice the parking on on the side street! It's a little hard to spot. read more

I had my haircut by Leigh at this wonderful salon. She was very precise and left my hair looking fabulous. I love the emphasis on accurate cutting with proper scissors, instead of the mess that some stylists create with razors or quick cutting. Will never go back. I grow my hair out for Locks for Love, and went in for a trim. Told the stylist that I donate my hair and that keeping the length is very important to me. He proceeded to cut off about 4" off my hair! I noticed it was noticeability shorter right after the cut but did not know how much shorter until I got home. It takes 10" to donate my hair and the guy just took 40% of it off. My hair was not damaged as I do not color or perm my hair (part of the process when you donate your hair). He even commented on how nice/healthy my hair was. There was no reason why that amount of hair needed to come off. Plus, the haircut was boring and uninventive. I asked the stylist for layerS, big S, and he gave me one layer. Same length everywhere. I asked twice and eventually I just got tired of asking him and gave up. read more

I visited Shyn Salon for the first time yesterday and was very pleased. I was having a "hair emergency" and literally needed an appointment almost immediately. Jonathan was very accommodating and was able to get James to work me in same day for a late afternoon appointment. The Montrose location is convenient with plenty of private parking behind the salon. So refreshing to not have to try to find street parking. The salon is very spacious, clean and well maintained. The decor is tasteful and all the shampoo sinks and stations are comfortable. James did a fantastic job with my hair with a very skillful cut. He consulted with me to determine my needs, and I couldn't be happier with the results! The products he used made my hair feel great. He showed me some photos of recent color he has done, really beautiful Balayage. Overall it was a very good experience and I'm happy to have found my new salon home! Visit Shyn and ask for James. I went to Shyn recently to get my ears lowered. The layout of the place is pretty cool and I really liked the decor. I had my hair cut by Stefani and she did a great job. She even stayed late on a Thursday to chop my mop for a wedding I had to attend over the weekend. The cut takes a while but she does an excellent job. read more

Since this is a business that seems to frequently have deals out on all our favorite deal sites, I think it's important to review them as much as possible! I think they are a repeat customer on Bloomspot, which is where I got my deal for a haircut. (I think it was valued around $40 for $80?) The deal seemed fine, but it was interesting that the cut had to be with any 1 of 3 people for the deal to be valid. I was absolutely DESPERATE for a haircut, okay. Split ends were starting to take over my head. As soon as I bought the deal, I called the salon for an appointment. They didn't have anything until the following week, so I said I'd call later once my schedule was more finalized. So I called the next week. Same story. It took me at least 3 weeks to get an appointment. It doesn't help that I work 830-530, but their Saturdays seem to book up weeks or maybe even months in advance. Ultimately I left work early one day to get my hair cut by Stephanie. She was really sweet! We both have chiuweenies (half dachshund, half chihuahua doggies) so we bonded instantly. I appreciated that she gave me her honest opinion when I asked for it ("should I bring back my bangs?" or "is my length too long for me?") which is often rare because stylists can sometimes be way more concerned with giving you the answer they think you want instead of what you really want--the truth. She suggested that my length was pretty long for my face and said she'd take off two or so inches. She did a pretty quick cut job and then styled my hair. It was MUCH shorter than I had expected. I didn't particularly love it when I walked out of the salon, but as it's grown out some and I've learned to style it on my own, I like it much better now. It's clear that the more my layers grow out, the better it'll look...especially compared to when I first walked out! I thought my experience here was fine, I'm just not sure I'm ready to call it my regular Houston salon. read more

I've been going to Katarina for 4-4.5 years now. I have dark hair and olive skin. I was frustrated by asking for dark brown highlights from the different salons I would visit - and somehow my highlights would be light brown that faded to blonde. Katarina truly "gets it" and does a wonderful job on color, cut and style. Yes, you pay a bit more money but you get what you pay for. She uses high quality color that stays a long time and does not fade 5 shades lighter after a month. I also like Katarina as a person. She is honest and will tell you if something does not or will not look good. I have not had my hair done by any of the other stylists, however, they are always kind and happy when I visit the salon. The salon manager Jonathan is professional and a sweetheart. I enjoy the minimalist and modern environment of the salon. I highly recommend Shyn Salon! read more

Time for an update on my favorite SHYN Salon! For the last 4 years, I have loved going to Stefani Barron for my blonde highlights, haircuts and special occasion styling. She's the best colorist ever and paints very thin strands to achieve a natural, effortless look. I also love the Davines color line that SHYN uses and specifically the formula/shade that Stefani has perfected on my hair! It really is a science and an art! All the time, people assume I'm a natural blonde because of her amazing technique, and as a result, I've referred several friends (who happen to be blonde) to Stefani and they have all loved her. As I knew they would! I can attest that among us, no two blondes are the same; some warm, some cool, all different hair types and textures. Stefani is great at guiding you and listening to you, in terms of what will work the best on your hair type, so that at the end of the day, you are 100% happy. That was my problem with other stylists in the past. They would just give me standard looking highlights that didn't really match me. Ever since finding Stefani, I've never loved my hair color so much, and I enjoy going to her for a glam blow dry / big curl style for parties, wedding and events. Even after reading all the reviews describing how unreliable the staff are at Shyn Salon, I was really excited and confident my experience would be different. I was horribly wrong. I saw several discounted opportunities for the haircut of my dreams, but decided that if was going to receive such a service, I want to pay full price (you know, just in case). So I made my appointment for the following Saturday and couldn't wait for my chance for a new summer cut. I called to confirm everything was on schedule when I learned there was no appointment in my name. Someone else was booked in my spot. The scheduler on the other line described how there was some "mix up"......BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER. I found a voicemail confirming my original appointment. Not only did they purposefully book someone else in my appointment slot, but LIED about it later. Use your imagination to figure out what happened. A new client was cast aside to accomodate someone else they deemed worthy of their lying shears. No thanks. I'll be going elsewhere. read more

After purchasing a Bloomspot deal ($35 for a $75 haircut) for Shyn Salon, my sister and I booked our appointments at the same time on a Thursday morning. It was pretty easy to book an appointment on a weekday, and I really like how they were very prompt in returning email requests via phone. The salon itself is a neat little place, with an urban and modern feel to it. Parking isn't so bad - there's plenty of street parking and a small lot for their property. The receptionist quickly greeted us and pointed us in the direction of our stylists. I had Stefani and my sister had Kip, and we were very happy with what each of them did with our hair! Don't let their young looks deceive you - each of these stylists have almost a decade of experience under their belts, and they definitely knew what they were doing. On top of being very friendly, they gave great suggestions on what hairstyles would look good on us and how to manage/care for our tresses. While the haircut prices are comparable to other higher-end salons ($75 women, $50 men, $30 kids), the quality was worth it, and definitely more so with a Bloomspot deal! I hope to come back again soon! TIP: They also do makeup services with Smashbox goodies ($85+). They also sell Smashbox in the salon, even with great sale items at the receptionist's desk. read more

Stefani knows how to treat my hair (which is hard because my hair is very, very thick) plus she is very knowledgeable and always suggests ways of cutting my hair that otherwise, I would probably be unaware of. As a guy It's not very easy to find an upbeat place that offers good haircuts without being intimidating and expensive, but Shyn is totally different, not only the prices are fair but the staff is really nice too. I did get a great cut at Shyn, but way shorter than I wanted or was told. Katarina also suggested I add a hint of red. In the salon it actually looked good, with a hint off red. I was a client of Marcus Daniels at Giuseppi Franco salon in Los Angeles- one of the best colorists in the country. Then came home to New Orleans, searched the trenches for someone that could attain deep lowlights and highlights like the Victoria Secret models I've worked with in New York- NO HONEY COLOR NO ORANGE! The search is over. 2 words: Katarina Voss. SHYN = BLONDE HAIR HOSPITAL Changing color lines is as frightening and unpredictable as some moder medical procedures. Katarina made changing from Marcus L'Oreal/Redken formula to Davines smooth and successful. i don't care what kind of water is served in my hair salon I don't care if it's accented with cucumber slices or lemon peel. i don't really care about how nice the furniture is, or frankly, the clientele, or even a stylist's chairside manner (Katarina is by the by, excellent at this as well) all I care about is a highly skilled and experienced colorist who understands the palate of one line to another, how to achieve the best look for your style and skin tone. I'll be driving to Houston from New Orleans for my next blonde color, and recommend everyone who has a remote interest in a trustworthy stylist to do the same. no doubt about it. read more
