After an initial bad experience in Virginia Beach, in general, we opted to have dinner at this restaurant. So so glad that we did. We arrived and discovered that they had a live old school band. What a pleasant surprise! There was about a 20 minute wait but we wandered over to the bar and my husband got a drink. The band was so good. We were finally seated and I ordered the curry shrimp dish with beans and rice and my husband ordered the jerk chicken with a side of greens. The food wasn't bad. The greens were very good. He asked if he could have a combo of white and dark meat but that was an emphatic no. No problem though. The food wasn't as tasty and delicious as other Caribbean restaurants we've eaten at but it was good and spicy. The band and drinks certainly make up for the food. I had the Bob Marley drink and it was good and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his (giant) drink. The band played music from mostly the 90's and some older school music. We really enjoyed the band and are so glad that we got to hear them. They played until 10 pm. If I'm not mistaken, the gratuity was automatically added and it was 20%. They also had a spot to add an addl gratuity and we added it bc our waitress was very good. Thank goodness for this restaurant that saved our VB experience and made it worthwhile!
Food was so good. We just got back from Jamaica and were craving Jamaican food. The jerk chicken was flavorful but the rice was just okay. The conch fritters were my favorite. The food did take a long time to come out. We were waiting for our entrees for a good 20 minutes.
Loveee loveee loveeeee this place! This is my go to happy hour spot (happy hour is everyday from 3pm-6pm) on drink and food specials. The service from EVERYONE (owner included!) is amazing, the bartenders makes the best drinks and the food is delicious! The ambiance is nice - perfect for a girls night/ family dinner/etc. On weekends (Friday & Saturday) they have live music perfomances that start at 6pm and then a dj from 10pm-2 am it is a great time with no cover charge
Came for their gospel brunch with some friends. We had a reservation so we were seated quickly. The event was listed from 3-6pm. I wasn't sure if they would have brunch food or regular menu and it was the regular menu. It was happy hour so several of my friends ordered off that menu. I got the Rasta pasta with salmon and asked for it to be spicy. The pasta was flavorful, the salmon was a nice seize and the portion was huge. Definitely enough for two meals. It was pretty busy but we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The music was in the patio area but luckily we were able to hear it in the regular dining area. Eveyone enjoyed their dishes whether it was the beef patties, coconut shrimp, oxtails, wings or lamb chops. Definitely a nice spot for live music and happy hour.
I've been to Cutlass Grille several times, and while it's definitely one of those places with great food and a fun vibe, I'd say the experience can sometimes be hit or miss--for me, at least. My friends? They love it! They always have a great time and say the food is consistently excellent. If it wasn't a bit pricey, they'd probably eat here even more often. On this visit, I ordered the Rasta Pasta with shrimp, but I honestly didn't care much for the taste. However, when I took a bite of my friend's beef ribs and paired it with the pasta, that combo was perfect. The beef ribs alone (which come with two sides) ran about $44, and the Rasta Pasta varies depending on the protein. With shrimp, it was close to $30. The plantains were okay--not my favorite this time--and the cabbage lacked seasoning in my opinion. I can only speak for my own taste, though. Everyone's palate is different! As for service, you could tell the staff had been working hard all week. Some seemed a little tired, but that's understandable. One thing I really appreciated was this one particular guy who's always upbeat and friendly. Even though he wasn't our server today, he still made the effort to stop by and check on us. That made a difference. The decor has a true Rasta/island feel, which I love. The crowd is usually friendly, and the overall atmosphere is always welcoming and laid-back. Would I go back? Yes. But next time, I'm skipping the pasta and going straight for the beef ribs--those were a winner! #CutlassGrille #ChesapeakeEats #JamaicanFood #RastaPasta #BeefRibs #IslandVibes #FoodieReview #FoodieInVirginia #HamptonRoadsEats #RestaurantVibes #HitOrMissButWorthIt #SupportLocalRestaurants #FoodWithFlavor #RastaDecor #DiningExperience #FoodieFavorites #PlantainsAndPasta #BlackOwnedRestaurants #GoodEatsVA #MissysFoodJourney #SandraLeesFoodJourney
I have been twice before here, but not on a Friday, where there was a live band. The band was great, food, and ambiance was great. Service was good. I'm going to keep it short, since I have already reviewed this establishment, but I found an aluminum wire in my leftover mac and cheese the next day (leftover for lunch). It looks like stainless steel scrubbing pad. Also, the women's bathroom was atrocious. Toilet paper on the floor, non flushed toilets with #2 inside. I almost lost my appetite. Managers please keep up with the cleanliness and safety. I would like to come back again for the food.
Came here on a Saturday night. Was definitely expecting live music, but they didn't have any. I'm weary of Caribbean restaurants because I'm used to authentic food and not being served just anything basic. Anyways I ordered the rum punch, it was sweet as expected. My friend ordered the beef patties, they were ok. We kept looking at the menu and nothing really stood out to us. We compared the menu with the Yelp pictures and decided not to eat there. As a jerk pork lover, I was disappointed in the cut meat that they used. It just wasn't for me. But the place is nice, the bartender was pleasant and you can tell if there was live music then it would be a vibe.
I went and sat at the bar. The bartender was very nice. I ordered the rum punch and the mini beef patties. The rum punch was ok. Tasted more sweet than anything. The mini beef patties were excellent! The filling was pouring out which I appreciated. I would definitely like to check it out on a Friday when they have the DJ in there. However the music they were playing was nice.
This is probably the best Caribbean food place I've eaten ate in years and in the 757. I have to admit I was doubtful as I haven't had any good Caribbean food lately but this place has changed that. The jerk wings were good and seasoned well. They're dry not wet but you still get that full jerk flavor. The cabbage was actually good. It's usually watery in most places but they nailed it here. The mac and cheese...it's usually the biggest let down but again, they got it right! Nothing dry and brick shaped but creamy and cheesy. Now the jerk steak was something I was truly worried about but the waitress assured me I wouldn't be disappointed, and she was right. While it's not something I would want on a normal occurrence, I have to say it's a twist on steak and one that I wasn't mad at. Again the jerk flavoring was abundant and really made the steak stand out all by itself. The scenery isn't much to talk about but there's plenty of seating even though the place looks small. Try this place out if you're looking for a little Jamaican flavor.
Came here twice to get food as the restaurant is really good and they are one of the best restaurants close to my hotel. I tried to come here a third time but I think they were closed due to the heavy snowfall and the fact that the parking lot was not plowed very well. The interaction with the staff (hostesses and register) have been very good and friendly. Although the inside of the restaurant looks really upbeat and fun, they are really busy inside and I rather eat back at my hotel rather than eating alone at the restaurant so I only order takeout. For food, I tried both the rum glazed pork chop and the oxtails. The rum glazed pork chop is large, perfectly cooked, and delicious. The oxtails which are one of their specialties disappointed me, too small, a little tough, just not enough portion size in my opinion. Taste was ok but I think I will stick to the pork chop. The only sides I tried was their collard greens and boy is this a winner! I really love their collard greens and they give a very generous portion which is awesome. This is by far, my favorite restaurant I have found so far on this trip and I will definitely be eating here again as it is close to the hotel and so delicious.
My wife said this is the nicest looking Jamaican restaurant we've been to in the US. Yes we travel quite often to Caribbean and Jamaica. And I would agree with her. Now to be honest, we had the coconut shrimp appetizer, which was OK. Had the jerk shrimp taco, which was exceptional. But that was nothing. I ordered the brown stew snapper fish And my wife ordered escovitch fish. Now she said hers was really good. But my brown stew fish reminded me of a trip we made to Port Royal Jamaica about 10 years ago. In Port Royal they literally caught the fish, brought it to the kitchen and cooked it. This tasted similar to that. Perhaps the best fish I've had in the US at a restaurant in over 30 years. Will certainly come back.

We had an amazing meal last night at Cutlass Grille. We started with homemade conch fritters which were full of conch, fried lightly, and perfectly crispy. For entrees, my husband at the curried goat with Jamaican rice and peas and plantains. Everything was delicious!! Watch the bones though as they like to hide. I had the special which was a rum-glazed bone in pork chop with collard greens and mac and cheese. The collards were the best I have ever tried and the pork chop was delicious too. The service was friendly and everything was delivered to our table on time. It was a perfect meal and we will be back!! read more

Excellent, excellent/ Genuine customer service at the bar, durng my takeout order. (Kudos!) Cutlass Grille"s food: I ordered the jerk pork with rice and beans added oxtail gravy. (OoooooooThe Oxtail's gravy was "everything" maybe, I should have ordered oxtails) The jerk pork was good, but no grilled flavor and the riceand beans, had no flavor/ season. BUT, the food was so much, much better/ MORE Caribbean favor and back yard Grilled FAVOR, when the restaurant were smaller /when the restaurant was located next to the Chesapeake DMV. I would visit this location EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT..dinner for the husband and I ..( I could smell the grill smoke 3 miles prior to getting to the restaurant).... Sometime, I would even have to wait until the owner pull the Pork Off the Grill.. the food doesn't taste the same ...The food is on a larger scale, now ...(I get it) Also, I asked for some jerk sauce for my jerk pork..... I was quickly informed..NO JERK SAUCE!! LOL.. again, I missed the smaller location... jerk sauce was available!! read more

Omg the food here is so good. I went there with my sister on my lunch break and was amazed at the selection and flavor of the dishes. I was so full half way through my meal but it was so good I couldn't stop eating. Our waiter was extremely helpful with deciding a second side for me. Although the food takes a while to cook it's well worth it. read more

They have a great variety of beer and draft beer. The interior decoration was exquisite! The hostess and waitress were both pleasant and inviting. We were sat immediately and ordered our drinks in about 3 minutes. I had the jerk chicken and cabbage. read more

I ordered take out from here yesterday. I was super excited to try out a new Caribbean restaurant being that it is my favorite style of food. I saw all of the stars for this place and could not wait to try it. The woman I spoke with over the phone was polite. When I got there to pick my food up, I was shocked that it was already done being that she told me it would take about 15 minutes, and I got there in about 5 minutes because I was already in route. The atmosphere was nice and they had an open bar. When I got my food I was disappointed. They definitely do not give you a lot of food, compared to other Caribbean restaurants in the area. I ordered jerk chicken with one side. I LOVE Caribbean food and I know good/authentic Caribbean food when I taste it. The chicken and rice was very bland. Had zero flavor, even with the gravy on top of my rice and peas. The chicken was dry as well. I wanted to go back but I had an appointment to attend. I really wanted to like this place being that it is a close Caribbean restaurant by my house. Maybe they were having an off day so I will give it another try in the future. read more

Honestly, I don't get what all the hype is about. 4.5 stars with over 400 reviews, I've been here a couple times and I think it's just okay. The restaurant is pretty big but the parking lot it shares with the rest of the businesses in Knell's Ridge Square is of ample capacity. The place was packed on my most recent visit on a Saturday night. We decided not to wait for a seat and chose to order takeout. We got the Jerk Shrimp Tacos appetizer, Jerk Pork with mac & cheese and steamed cabbage, Oxtails with steamed cabbage and baked beans with brisket bits. We waited a little less than thirty minutes for our order which I was okay with given how busy they were, they had a line of people waiting for seating and the phone kept ringing for takeout orders. The restaurant was clean, tables were bussed and cleaned in a timely manner, the men's room was clean and properly stocked with supplies. Our food was hot and fresh but just not very impressive. The Oxtails were pretty good, they were fall off the bone tender with a generous amount of gravy though I would have liked a little more spice. The Jerk Pork was not very good. It was way too lean and pretty bland while the portion was pretty small. It desperately needed more seasoning and some sauce as it was pretty dry. My wife rejected it so I made a sandwich with it and took it to work the next day. The mac & cheese was good but the cabbage was bland and mushy, the baked beans were just okay. The Jerk Shrimp Tacos appetizer was definitely the highlight of the meal. The three tacos were really tasty and delicious though for $13.29 I would have liked more than two shrimp per taco. Overall I give Cutlass Grille three stars. Our food was good but not outstanding and I felt it was overpriced for what we got. We are used to bigger portions for less money at other Jamaican restaurants we visit. To be fair, the other Island restaurants we patronize are smaller and I'm sure Cutlass Grille is carrying a lot more overhead with their large building and staff. I would return if someone invited me to join them but I probably won't be going on my own. read more

I walked up at 6:45pm and was seated promptly. There is a sign that they charge 18% gratuity with any In restaurant seating. For to go orders, this 18% does not apply I was told by hostess. So... I thought ok, I give it a try. Theme is Jamaican and music to match. It's a cleaner, more upscale environment than typical Jerk chicken shack you've seen in Kingston. Food: I ordered Bourbon Salmon and Greens with Plantains. Meal took about 20 min and it arrived with good presentation and hot. First bite, this is delicious! Food was excellent and Salmon did Not taste fishy. Service was also good. Patrons ware mostly professional with a couple of "yo bros" hustling the ladies. It's a mostly black crowd, which is fine. I didn't feel unsafe, but a couple of the gents needed to be let down easy by the bar tender --- tell the aggressive dudes to piss off!! If you're into good food, I like this spot. Recommendation - order to go, unless you want drinks. read more

I've only heard good things about CG and decided to try it myself. This is my second visit as I didn't want to judge too soon but they have consistently been GOOD! They seat you promptly and the hostess and servers on both occasions were cheerful and pleasant. First visit we just missed the lunch specials by 10 minutes so I headed to the dinner menu and was not let down by my selection. The curry shrimp, plantains, MAC n cheese we're sooooooooo good! My cousin ordered the jerk chicken white meat with collards and MAC and again it was bomb. On the second trip I went for the jerk chicken and she had the oxtails, my hubby did the jerk chicken sandwich and my cuz in law did the red snapper .. everything was so flavorful. This will be a regular spot for good, Jamaican food. The service was nice and the atmosphere cool. Don't hesitate to visit this place. read more

Service is always fantastic food comes out very fast. Depending on what dishes it would give it a five or four star. Lamb chops are five meat patties are for their OK nothing to come back for nothing bad no that they're going to be a little empanada like things. Jerk chicken with fried rice is amazing that's a definite five star jerk pork is the same. I wouldn't do the steamed cabbage again because it'sMore like a stew with carrots and celery but if you're into those flavors you'll like it. The fish sandwich is OK I wouldn't get that again either there's a lot of places that can do better and fresher tasting go with what they're known for go with the jerk chicken or the pork! read more

Walked in and was promptly greeted. I called in my order so when I got there my food was ready. Got to enjoy the few minutes of live music. Was very disappointed with my food. Spent $20.84 on an order of Oxtails, cabbage, rice and peas. The food was very bland and it did not have that Caribbean flavor. read more

Took the inlaws here. Told father in law to get the brown stew chicken. He didn't listen. He got brisket. He said it was eh. Mother in law is smart. She listened. He tried hers and said he should have gotten that. Why don't men listen to women?! My son LOVES the Jamaican rice and peas. And the macaroni and cheese. Or maybe I love to make him get it so I can steal bites. Go to order - brown stew chicken with Jamaican rice and peas and macaroni and cheese. Order it. Trust me. Actually don't. Cuz sometimes they run out of the brown stew chicken, and my whole day is ruined. My whole week. And I'm not me when I'm hungry. They added lamb chops to their appetizer menu and those are so flipping good. Probably the best best best lamb chops ever. WARNING. They are spicy. My father in law is the biggest weenie with spice and they were definitely too spicy for him , but he kept eating them anyway!!! Please keep these forever. read more
